For the amount of money we pay as members and things like the steam room stay broken for over two months. Not worth the money- especially since they just raised our dues. GO ELSEWHERE

This location is very poorly managed. Repairs take forever — the elevator was down for months, and now the steam room has been out of service for weeks with no clear update. They didn’t even send an email until five days after the steam room was first closed, just to “let us know” it was down. There isn’t a single ankle strap on the entire floor. Overall, everything feels inattentive and mismanaged.

I have been of member of east 85th street for many years. The pluses- It is very clean, the staff is super nice, the clientele is nice (mostly)and entering the club feels like entering into a friendly community. The classes are top notch. I have had Zumba with a professional dancer, Pilates with a ballerina, and strength training with experienced body builders. The instructors and the trainers are so friendly and helpful. The last smoothie I had was absolutely delicious. I’ve benefited from a number of complimentary Pilates and training sessions. I’ve made good friends. I found an amazing trainer that changed my life! They have a lot of equipment for every need, and I always have a good workout when I go. They started doing sonic meditation that is so relaxing and they are often switching up the classes to meet clients’ needs.

A few negatives:
It is very expensive relatively to other gyms for what you get. It is true that the elevator is always breaking down, the hot water is sometimes out, and the steam room is not always hot. The spa is also overpriced and underwhelming- a few people stood out but mostly the service is mediocre. The gym seems to have problems regulating the temperature. Often times it can be so cold that instead of being hot, your body breaks out in a cold sweat. Very uncomfortable. Also as of late unless you sign up the day before you are locked out of most of the classes- so you need to plan ahead or be out of luck.

All in all I would recommend this location. It is one of the oldest locations and they have done a lot to update it. What they lack in some of the inconveniences listed above, they make up for with a truly amazing staff, a quality clientele, a plethora of equipment and classes, and a clean, pleasant environment.

Really disappointed in the new equipment “upgrade” - the new life fitness cable machine is just horrible, feels like I’m training at a hotel gym. Other than that, trainers are great and the other equipment is ok / pretty standard equinox.

As far as Equinox goes this is not impressive. The shower is so small and you can't get the temperature right. It's either too hot or too cold. The smoothie was watery. The workout facilities are fine and very clean. Someone broke glass on the floor in the locker room and the employee who cleaned it up was mopping it up. Someone suggested a vacuum and they said they didn't have one. I could still see glass chunks on the floor after they cleaned up because they didn't use a vacuum. They were just spreading the glass chunks around with a mop. I feel like vacuum is pretty basic cleaning thing and is needed for cases like this.

I deeply regret ever signing a contract with Equinox. Their business practices are deceptive, and I’ve been trying to cancel my membership for over three weeks with no success. The customer service team is unhelpful and unresponsive, making the process extremely frustrating. I highly recommend avoiding this gym at all costs.

I'm really disappointed with the Equinox on E 85th St—it's by far the worst location I’ve been to. The women’s steam room never goes above 40 degrees, which is basically useless. I’ve asked management multiple times to fix it, but nothing ever gets done. It feels like no one is listening, yet I’m still paying for amenities I can’t even use.

Some of the instructors do the exact same workouts every week. The whole point of taking classes is to try something different, but it feels unoriginal and lazy when they just repeat the same routines. For what they charge, you'd expect more variety and effort.

And don’t get me started on the showers—they’re tiny and uncomfortable. For the price they charge, this place doesn’t live up to the hype. Definitely not worth the money. Equinox E 85th is the worst location I’ve been to.

I've truly enjoyed coming to this gym over the last 1.5 years. It's very clean, it has all of the right equipment including a straight pull up bar and more importantly space which allows me to work on handstands. I find staff and trainers to be very friendly, front desk always welcoming and smily, and management to be very understanding and responsive. I'm not sure where all the negative reviews came from, but speaking from my personal experience I have nothing but great things to say about this gym.

BEWARE OF THIEVES IN THE LOCKER ROOM. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR SHOES OR SOCKS ON THE LOCKER FLOOR. YES I HAVE LOST THEM.

Equinox E85 has been a fantastic gym experience for me. The variety of classes, especially under the stunning glass ceiling, is amazing. The cycling and yoga studios are decent, though the noise from weights being dropped upstairs during yoga can be a bit distracting. So I would prefer other quiter yoga studios.
It would also be great if JuicePress made fresh smoothies on site. Despite these minor issues, I genuinely love working out here and appreciate the excellent facilities and classes offered. Equinox has truly enhanced my fitness.

85th st is the joke of the equinox’s. Every other day there’s no hot water, no hvac, no elevator- there’s always an email coming out about something not working. Today, Sunday, they open at 7am. Jokes on the guests, no one arrived by 730 so they finally gave the maintenance guy the key to code. Unacceptable, equinox no longer holds themselves to a standard they used to.

During my six months at this Equinox location on 85th Street, I have experienced discrimination through false complaints made against me. Despite these allegations, I was never approached or informed about them by the gym Manager. This lack of communication and transparency is unacceptable. I want to emphasize that during my time at the gym, I have never spoken with any staff or members. I go to the gym to work out and mind my own business. My gym time is a focused time I spend for my health, so I focus on that making these complaints even more baseless. It's deeply concerning that such discriminatory actions can occur unchecked within the gym environment and I urge the Equinox Holdings to address these issues promptly. I contact the manager to this location to see why my membership was cancel and is been 4 months of the cancellation and no respond from them. That’s the kind of experience Equinox has for clients paying for a service.

I’ve had the worst experience that a women could have at the gym! Management decided to have two plumber work on a single sink in the women’s bathroom on a week day afternoon. The club never sent out an email or put up any notices on the entryway to the women’s locker room. I was literally walking around the locked room completely naked with two men watching me in silence. Feeling utterly mortified I threw on a towel and ran to the front desk to get help. A women managers try to pin the whole ordeal on the non-english speaking bathroom attendant who at the time was in the back cleaning the showers stalls. I asked for an incident report, in which she did not sign off on and it was never filed! Since then, the club has avoided my phone calls on this matter. Equinox concierge has been giving me the runaround on the matter .
Anyone looking into joining East 85th location, DONT!! This is one of the worst locations, 1.Poor management 2. Everything is constantly falling apart 3. Constant staff turnover and the list goes on.

The fact that I’ve been put in the most uncomfortable situation, made to feel all kinds of lows and cannot get a single phone call /email with a explanation on why this happened to me or at least a sorry is beyond disgraceful.

The thing I like best about this gym is the yoga studio and how clean it is. The yoga studio feels private and very large. Some members get upset abt the weights dropping on the floor above us but it doesn’t bother me so much.

There are a lot of stairs in this gym and the layout can be confusing but they have tons of cardio machines, weights and equipment and spacious mat area for stretching. I do get confused and get lost but it’s a beautiful space to be lost in.

I've enjoyed this gym since joining. They have a wide range of classes available at times I can go. This is why I made the switch. I was pleasantly surprised they had a full service spa. I had an 80 minute deep tissue massage today that was absolutely fantastic. So glad to find this option close to home in the 80s.

High priced scam. If you are unfortunate enough to find out they are no better than say…Crunch (3 blocks away), good luck getting them to cancel your membership. 4 straight calls to the manager resulted in being told “Oh, she just stepped into a meeting” and never getting a call back. I was stupid enough to join despite many negative reviews, so maybe I deserve what I got. They are liars and ocrooks and highly unprofessional.

I used to train at the Bond St. locale, but, this location is *much better*: better equipment, better locker room, and better amenities (e.g., smoothie bar for post-workout). Oh, and far fewer people at any given time, which means that I can train effectively: Bond St. was (is) always crazy busy.

The steam room is very weird. The steam constantly sets of the smoke alarm. Employees have to open the door and let the steam out every few minutes. And it is not even a lot of steam in there. Much weaker than my Dallas steam room. Weirdest thing, I have ever seen at any Equinox. The steam room is pretty much unusable.

Gym itself is fine although the locker room is super tight.
The real issue is with the self-entitled manager. I've been to numerous locations throughout the city (Hudson Yards, 63rd, 74th, 54th, etc) with my compact electric scooter and never had a problem. Now all of a sudden, the manager at 85th has a problem with it and let me in "just this once". If you have issues with being in front of customers, then rethink your line of work. I would have just left for another location if I hadn't already booked a massage at this one. Not worth it when there are far better clubs around this location (74th & 63rd).

Unhealthy culture. I was assaulted and harassed by another member to a complete silence of the staff. In fact , the staff acquiesced to the abhorrent behavior of a young man who threw air punches at me, insulted verbally and invaded my personal space. That member did not lose his membership while I had to cancel mine as I felt threatened and unsafe in Equinox.

One of the older Equinox locations but had all the equipment you would need for a good workout. Plenty of cardio machines, weights, etc. Gym is spread on two floors. I've been going to this gym for 6 years now (since early 2011) and I think it's a great gym and superior to others in the area. Never been to other luxury gyms that are more in line with Equinox so can't say how it compares to them but compared to ones like NYSC and etc., those don't compare. Compared to the other average gyms, it's definitely way nicer, not anywhere as packed and has great amenities.

In terms of other negative comments I see here, in terms of those that say it's packed, A) It's much better than other gyms and B) if you go during peak times (Mon-Fri ~630AM-930AM; 5PM-8PM; Sat-Sun 9AM-mid/late afternoon) it will be relatively packed but so is any other gym. I generally plan around peak times and when I do, there will be times where there's only a handful of people on each floor.

To that other woman's comment about equipment constantly being broken leading to injury and etc., that's completely ridiculous. In the 6 years I've been going there, I've never experienced issues even close to this. There have been a few times where I've seen treadmills or stepmasters, and etc. out of order, but Equinox puts signs up on the machines so people don't use them.

The only reason I give 4 and not 5 stars is in comparison to some other Equinox clubs like the one the one on 75th (or so) and 2nd Ave. which is even nicer and has some more amenities. Otherwise it's great.

UPDATED COMMENT: 2 or 3 weeks ago I used a shower after a workout and the drain wasn't draining at a standard rate so there was a little layer of water backed up. Forgot to mention it to anyone, but remembered the next day when I was at the gym. After my workout, I emailed the maintenance person and then hopped in the steam shower for 10-15 minutes. When I got out of the steam shower, there were already maintenance people checking out the shower and trying to fix it (if there was still issue). Talk about great response time.

Gym is overheated and has equipment which is often broken( causing injuries). Treadmills are wobbly and angled to the left or right. Some weight equipment has been removed in exchange for empty space. Members complain about these issues all the time and nothing gets done. A lot of lip service and no action. A luxury gym it is not.

And... With the influx of David Barton members ( as the gym shut down) , this Equinox gym will only get worse.

This is quite a nice Equinox location in the Upper East Side. Compared with all the other gyms in the vicinity, Equinox is by far the best. The particular location is located right on 85th Street and 3rd Ave. Hidden within the residential area, you're pretty much going to the gym if you live in the area. Nonetheless, it is new, and is a top notch facility.

If you want to compare apples to apples, and Equinox to Equinox, this UES club is better than half the ones in Midtown. First of all, it is spacious. Stretched out over 4 floors, there is plenty of room for you to work out. The 1st Floor isn't really much. There is a couch there, and it's sole purpose is to check you into the gym. Once you walk up to the 2nd floor, you'll find the Shop, juice bar, another check-in area, membership services, and of course the locker rooms and spa. As far as the locker rooms are concerned, they're pretty big. There are 9 shower stalls, a steam room, and more lockers that I can even count. Like all Equinox locations, Kiehl's products are there for you to use.

For working out, you'll be spending your time on the 3rd and 4th floors. The 3rd floor is where the yoga and spinning studios are. There's also a nice little TRX section next to the stretching area, which is always a big plus. For both floors, you'll find that the cardio machines are in the middle of the floor, while the weights and machines are kind of scattered around the cardio machines. Although there isn't a plethora of machines, there are enough to go around to the point where you never really have to wait to use something. Lastly, you'll find the dance/cardio room on the 4th floor.

This Equinox location is incredible. It's clean, not too crowded, and beats out all the other gyms in the area. Sure it might be a little more expensive than David Barton and all the other spots, but you get what you pay for.

This was my first visit to any Equinox location and I was duly impressed. Workout facilities are pretty standard; lots of basic machines and equipment. A variety of classes are available for those who prefer group fitness. What impressed me was the locker room, which is large and beautifully finished and feels as if you're in a spa. Helpful staff members are scattered throughout. A gorgeous gym. Definitely worth a visit for those looking to splurge.
