We can’t say enough good things about Goldfish. Katie the GM goes above and beyond to make our experience the best one possible. She is easily reached and more than happy to help answer any questions we had. Our girls were terrified of the water and her and her staff showed such patience and understanding. They helped put our minds at ease and worked hard to give our daughters the confidence to be in the water. We especially are grateful for their swim coach Kaz. She always greets our girls with a smile and warm welcome, even during the trying times of them being scared to get in the water. She made the classes fun and gained the trust of our girls. They are so excited to see her each week and absolutely love swimming. They are excelling and always excited to show us the new techniques they are working on. I can tell most of the reviews on here are from Facebook-type moms who like to leave superdy-duperdy wowtastic reviews and name-drop nice comments about various staff members. Name dropping isn't a review. I read reviews to get a review. Here is an honest review - not necessarily bad - but simply my honest opinion. That's the real purpose of a review.
The facility is great - very clean, nicely decorated with private changing booths. They provide hair dryers and clothes spinners to dry swimwear so you don't have to carry home soaked clothes. A nice seating area is set up for waiting parents. The pool is behind a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and is in full view, which is nice because the pool room is very hot and would not be pleasant to sit in while fully dressed. The staff is pleasant, check-in is easy with the app and the instructors are very nice.
Our 6 year old was initially hesitant to take lessons but after a trial, was excited to go back. We signed him up for weekly lessons. While he got much more comfortable in the water over the next few months, that is where it stopped. He basically plateaued and we noticed no further improvement. The classes consisted mainly of floating him on his back or on a flotation device, doing some kicking, etc. for about 10 minutes per student...10 minutes a week - that's it! His regular group dropped from 4 to 3 because the girl's father that I got to know from each class said the same thing - she was going for 6 months and made very little progress. Now, I know it's also up to the child to make progress, but I feel the school's goal is to do what I can't. I can swim - but I don't have the training or technique to teach swimming - that is why I signed him up for lessons. Also, when we are in a pool together he wants to play, not learn.
If you read other reviews from the phony Facebook moms, you might notice a pattern. Most reviews are "he makes good progress and can dunk his head now". Dunk his head after months of lessons? Or "our daughter is taking lessons for over a year and is much more confident in the water"...Much more confident after a year of lessons? She should swim like a fish by now.
In all fairness, the lessons cost less than private lessons but the progress is in-line with the price due to having to take turns with the 3 or 4 kids in each group. Again, we loved the school itself but wish it progressed quicker. We ultimately stopped after 5 months, when we realized we were in the same situation as the girl I mentioned earlier.
It seems some of the moms use it as more of a social event for their kids and aren't looking for real progress, since most times they're fingering their phones in the seating area the entire time anyway. As I observed each week, I didn't see any kids tearing-it-up in the water. They all just meandered and were pulled on a float. We switched to weekly private lessons with a college swim team member and from June to when she went back to college mid-August, our son learned to tread water, swim to the deep end and back unassisted, and dive under and pick up swim rings from a 5 ft deep area. A little more expensive but after 3 months he basically reached his goal. You get what you pay for.

The place is very clean, spacious with lots of changing rooms and well organized. However, we pay for a 30 minute class and my kid only spends about 8 mins in the pool actually learning anything.

The first 5 minutes is the instructor helping other kids in her group obtain and put on goggles. Why aren’t the kids ready with their goggles is beyond me, this should be required before they step into the pool. Next each kid goes in the pool for about a minute while the other 3 kids sit at the end of the pool waiting for their turn. This just makes it so that kids are sitting around for their turn doing nothing.

There would be times my kid would have two instructors, yet the outcome was the same only one instructor would swim while the other just stared at the rest of the group.

Classes end 5 mins before the 30 mins are up and by the time all is done my kid would be in the pool for no more than 8 minutes total.

Another thing that happened often is older kids that had way more experience, would join my kids group. This unbalance threw the instructor off.

We ended up stacking classes in hopes she would get more pool time. We probably won’t be coming back.

I don't live in Centereach but I bring my kids here because the staff is truly dedicated. The GM Sam personally made sure my daughter (who was not so keen in doing all the tasks and would push back many times during a lesson) was paired with an instructor who used her creativity and spunk to help her achieve her lesson goals.
Rich and Jordan are always encouraging the kids in every lane (my kids love when they shout out their names during a lesson) and keep the day running smoothly as they call everyone in and out of their lesson. They make swim feel like a family fun event, I look forward to bringing the kids every week .

My son has been attending Goldfish Swim school for Over a year. Initially we were very happy with the school’s performance & his adaptability to learning to develop his swimming skills. However after being with the program for over a year and remaining in the same exact level he begun in it started to become much less challenging and exciting for him to attend classes. I’ve contacted the manager and employees on multiple occasions to find out how long is the process to move up to a new level for swimmers and why I never Receive any feedback whatsoever on his progress or even what he needs to improve on if anything! But to no avail. Currently searching for a better swimming school for my son.

My 8 year old has been coming here for two years and he has come a long way. He feared the water so he was delayed on me introducing him to the pool. After moving into a condo 4 years ago with an amazing Pool I noticed kids a lot younger than my son using the diving board and swimming in the 10 feet side. My son wanted to copy them but I told him he has to learn how to swim. So I enrolled him here and let me say that every child is different. He not only feared the water, then it was learning how to hold his breath under water to now diving from the diving board FINALLY! This school does not teach diving but by learning the basics my son became very fond of swimming and it is so important to be patient with how long it will take for your child to learn. We had a couple of teachers that were not the best but the managers handled my concerns immediately and made the changes necessary to accommodate my son. I appreciate everyone here they always greet you with a big smile and acknowledge you when you exit. This is a great place for your kids to learn swimming!

Took over a year to learn basic swim skills. Teachers are constantly rotating and there seems to be no system for new teachers to know where the students progress is. Each time a new teacher comes in the student is forced to start their progress from the beginning because the teacher isn’t aware of the students skill level. Honestly a waste of time and money. Was here for 3 months. First month the instructor was horrible but they were very tolerant to my concerns and switched the instructor. The next 2 months were great. Unfortunately, after my 3rd month my card expired. I was ready to add a new card but they didn’t even give warning or say anything before filling our spot. I tried to bring it up but they did not seem to care and put us on a waiting list. I tried a different day and time but they’re only other times conflicted with my sons naps. I tried to cancel and they only offered a credit which I couldn’t use since they had no open spots. Very upset as he loved the class.

My son has been going to Goldfish for about a year now and I’m not sure if I’m seeing as much progress as we would like. The progress has been a little slow so we requested to have a consistent instructor each week that we go. Our instructor seems to be different almost every week (we go the same time and day each week). Classes end 5 minutes early with most of the instructors although we’re paying for a full 30 minutes of instruction. We requested Brennan to have as a consistent instructor each week since he’s amazing and he covered for the other instructor. Not trying to get the other staff in trouble but Brennan is who we want to have each week for the Saturday 11:30 class for my son. Otherwise, we enjoy going there and overall everyone who works there is friendly and helpful.

This school is ok if your child can't swim at all. They are able to get kids swimming. But they're extremely slow at it, taking over a year to teach basic swimming techniques. The lessons are also very short, only 30 minutes. But after 25 min they end the lesson to have the next group come in. It's very nice inside with variously themed changing rooms, and the staff are nice. But I feel the productivity level is very low for the money they charge.

I have been nothing but amazed at the level Of friendliness, professionalism, and cleanliness at this facility. I am So happy that I signed my Daughter up. She has loved every second and she has become so much more confident in the water. I see her improving each week and that is thanks to the wonderful instruction!

If I could give this place 0 starts I will !
I had my daughter on swimming classes since she was 4 months old. Never had any problem until I called them on January 2022 because I was about to had a baby to pause my oldest daughter lessons. The lady who took my call instead of help me charged me twice for February. I didn’t feel comfortable on leaving my CC information anymore. Besides Joanne everybody else has been very disrespectful there. They don’t have any sense of customer service at all, if they have to communicate anything to you instead of tell it on private they will yell it to you as soon as you are arriving to the place.
Bottom line this place has to change the way their employees treat their customers.
Be aware of this before you think about enroll your child there.

I have three kids enrolled, almost every class there has been with a different instructor. Some Instructors are very friendly, while others don’t even acknowledge your child and say hi. One class my son sat and play with the other two kids while the instructor gave the fourth child a private lesson because she was having a meltdown! The trainee that was working with this instructor played with water toys with the others for the entire class- no swimming was done! Today my son went underwater and the lifeguard wasn’t even watching and he didn’t even stand up to be ready to jump in. They do not do monthly drug tests!!!!! They claim to do random tests which to me is unacceptable when you have small children who do not know how to swim in a pool and could easily drown!!! Needless to say they lost all three of my children after only two short months!!!!

My kids took 3 classes and each time there was a different teacher. The last class had 4 kids, 25 minutes for 4 kids (6 minutes each kid ) Then when I wanted to cancel and the manager said it had to be 30 days written notice in advance. I do not recommend this place.

Our kids have been attending for a few months now and they love it! The entire staff is always smiling and kind, they remember ALL the students. Entire facility is always clean too! Could not recommend them anymore!

My boys and I are extremely happy with the experience we have had at gold fish so far! It’s been about a year now and they are both swimming on their own and very confident in and around water ! Honestly if it wasn’t for Ms. Ivette I don’t know what we would have done! My oldest son (6) has really bad anxiety and some issues with being over stimulated among other things that we work on with him. Once he found ms. Ivette during a makeup class it changed everything! She matches his level and gets silly with him, she is so patient and kind to both my children. All the coaches are amazing but she just goes so above and beyond for her students and it really shows ! Swim lessons have become a form of therapy for him and he is every week look forward to going and seeing her and learning new skills ! My youngest wasn’t the happiest with the water and pool when he first started and would kick scream and cry going in, they always willingly grabbed him and distracted him fast, now I can’t get him out and he walks in with a smile and is always excited to go! He just moved up and was able to get into class with ms.Ivette as his coach now as well and he is SOOOOO OVER THE MOON EXCITED! He is although a little sad to be leaving ms. Mariah as he LOVED her as well, she was always so great with him! I can finally be a little more relaxed knowing that they will have the skills needed to safety swim in my parents in ground pool this summer and have the knowledge of water saftey. I love how if we miss a class we can schedule a makeup and see who is coaching thay class as well so we can try to pick some with coaches they love- the app is super easy and user friendly. The front desk staff is so welcoming and very informative always willing to help me with my 100 questions I have and phone calls. I always recommend Gold Fish to all my friends and family when asked! When we walked in, Lauren was on the phone she saw us and completely ignored us, she didn't bother to say one moment please or make a gesture with her hand to let us know that she would help us. We kept waiting not upset or anything untill a second couple walk in, she asked them if they needed to be signed in while she left us waiting. There should be equality for all, it might be because we are Latinos she left us waiting, unlike the second couple which were American. It is very disappointing to see yourself in this situation that makes you feel like you don't deserve to be there and you feel marginalized.

I HATE writing reviews but these guys deserve some kind of recognition. Especially Mr. Rich.
I have a three year old son who is afraid of the water. We put him in and he started crying as hard as I’ve seen him cry. After a while he calmed down and Mr. Rich began playing catch with him. After 10 minutes or so the throws became shorter and shorter until he was calm & in the water.
I didn’t think he would get him in.
If your kid is afraid of the water or can’t swim, bring them here. Really can’t say enough good things about what happened today. Looking forward to next week.

I brought my daughter for the first time and paid cash for three months without any problem. The manager Jennifer spoke to me very rudely saying that I have to put a credit card I told her that every month I have paid in cash and she told me that it is not acceptable. So I decided better to take my Daughter out of class. This person has a very bad attitude. It made me feel very bad in the way I treat myself. And I’m asking for the manager and she said she is . And she can do whenever she wants. Terrible experience

I love the fact that the facility is clean. I purposely choose tho have my son's class on the same day and time every week so that he can have consistency with his instructor and to be able to better gage his improvement. Well I have to say that we've been taking lessons here for over 6 months and there has been no consistency. The classes are also only 30 minutes with up to 4 students. When u do the math each child gets about 5 minutes of water time which isn't much at all. Lately they have been combining classes due to a shortage of instructors. When asking about this I first received no response then I was a given a reason that doesn't make sense. This is a nice facility but the children need more time in the water amd they need more staff consistency.

At first we were really excited to sign our daughter up for this school. But a year and a half later she is still in the same level, with little progression. The classes are too packed. There are 4 kids per class with 1 instructor. The classes last approximately 25 minutes. Each kid gets about 7-10 minutes per class of lessen, if that. It’s a total waste of money. The only reason I’m giving 2 stars is because the place is absolutely adorable with how it is decorated and set up.

We could not be any happier with the amazing experience we have had thus far! Everyone is so welcoming and they make sure all your questions are answered. The manager Ms. Sam is the best! She is always making sure the kids feel comfortable and works on building their confidence in the water. I have seen an immense improvement in my son’s swimming ability in less than one month. My son is always eager to come to his swimming lessons! I highly recommend this place to any parent who is looking to get their child swimming in a place that will make them feel safe and comfortable!

Great if you want your kid to have a little fun and splash around but don’t expect there to be much progress. With 30 min classes and 3-4 kids the instructors (who are super nice) only have about 4-5 mins per child to be in the pool. They’re also not really 30 min classes. Class ends 5 mins early for time to get the next class in the pool. Not recommended if safety or teaching your child to swim is the priority.

A lot of these parents aren’t being realistic with their reviews unless they just don’t have the same experience. When we signed up the hospitality was amazing great lady at the front friendly, clean etc. Now with covid rules going away they took the signs off the dressing rooms who knows if it’s cleaned or not and a bunch of young kids just sitting around gossiping at the desk. Bought a family member here to sign up their child, girl at the desk (not the same women we signed up with) was rude and didn’t give me the referral credit because she wanted us to be on a family plan instead. Most of the instructors are young kids hoping that children just get the hang of the lesson charts they are doing. Also it’s supposed to be 30 minutes lesson it’s 20-25 minutes every class is cut short. Paying almost $400 a month for private lesson. The atmosphere is nice but they need to re evaluate a lot of their staff. Wont return, cutting our losses

My daughter absolutely loves attending class each week. I cannot say enough about management, the teachers, or pool deck supervisors. They always make my daughter feel so comfortable, confident and happy. It has been incredible to watch her grow through the levels these last two years. Highly recommend this school!
