Such a great, small, friendly gym! As someone who almost never works out, I wanted to take advantage of their 2 class first timer discount, but was intimidated at first.
I took one of their strength & conditioning classes on a Monday at 12pm, and the only one there - which was great for me, since I probably would’ve slowed the rest of the class down! Patricia was a FANTASTIC instructor. I shared with her my major non-athleticism, and she made adjustments as needed throughout the workout. She was very encouraging, talkative, and helped me make adjustments when needed. I got a great workout in - that I could feel for several days afterward lol - and felt stronger. Excited to take another one of their classes!

Grassroots is a wonderful community! Weight training with a small group has been so satisfying! Living on a 5 floor walk up..what I've noticed after 5 months is I can go up those stairs without using the railing. It's much easier to carry laundry and groceries...my range of motion and cardio vascular health is measurably improved! I have less shoulder pain and better posture. I have a more positive mindset. I had both hips and a knee replaced over the past 6 years so having breakthroughs like this is really terrific! Starting the day with discipline, trying my best at each class leaves me happy and being surrounded by other women who are all working together and encouraging oneanother is truly inspiring and transformative. No vanity No BS ..its a group getting the work in side by side.Thankyou GRFP for bringing such a high level of training, passion and joy. Choosing this new habit has been a great decision. Movement has become my medicine again. Now I crave it and wake up before my alarm and go to class! I realize now, the hardest part was in my mind, deciding to start and show up...what more can I say?...Just come ....your body and spirit will thankyou for it.

As a client for over 13 years now, I'm so happy to share my recommendation for Grassroots. It is truly a one of a kind of place, especially for someone who is not a big fan of gyms or gym culture. My husband and children train there as well and it's become a core part of our family. It's a gym but so much more. It's a family started and run business. The staff are attentive to the client, not only in fitness but also as a person and member of their community. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable and considerate of individual abilities, needs, safety and aspirations. Women's Strength is an especially incredible, one of a kind program. It focuses on training women on how to lift weights safely and to be stronger than we ever imagined - both physically and mentally. The community that has grown out of this program is extremely special, and it welcomes women of all ages and abilities. Truly, there's no place like it.

WOW - truly a phenomenal gym! I joined in early December with a goal to start lifting after running the marathon. I was nervous about going back to the gym specifically lifting because I never felt comfortable at a regular gym. I like trying out classes because it's an opportunity to meet people and I usually can't keep myself accountable with a regular gym membership. This gym was appealing because they have a women's only lift class. I'm 100% glad I took the plunge. Heather, Will and their team make a genuine effort to make everyone feel welcome. They instill a culture of warmth, acceptance and growth. On my first day of walking in, everyone made an effort to introduce themselves - not just trainers - but other clients too! The classes are challenging. I've tried many fitness classes throughout the city and was a regular pilates/yoga girly before joining. I actually felt results within the first month of joining this gym. Classes are small / capped at 12. Trainers learn your name! Everyone is so kind. I struggled on the rowing machine for the first few weeks and everyone was so supportive. Motivated me to get better at rowing (even though I despise the machine itself).The trainers are also very nice about asking if anyone has any injuries or need any modifications to the exercises. They also make an effort to ensure you have the right technique, especially when learning new lifts. Another unique aspect about this gym is that when you do join you become a part of a larger community. There are opportunities to share interests (like running or making sourdough :D ) outside of the gym which is always a plus. Heather is great about connecting people and she motivates me to come in everyday (she will literally text you to ask if you're ok when you miss a session or are running late). Overall, glad I joined and it's been a great addition to my running training!

Update: Recently, I was in a situation where I had to rely on my own physical strength to take care of my 5-year-old son. I don't think I would have been successful if it wasn't for this gym. I've been coming to Grassroots consistently and have noticed a huge change in my day-to-day strength, which is precisely what I hoped for when I began this workout. Because of this class, I am able to do things like keep up with my children on skis (essentially a wall sit!), carry my groceries 10+ blocks without stopping (a real-world farmer carry!), throw my daughter up in the air in celebration (a snatch or maybe a clean!). These are the subtle but impactful changes that come from this supportive community. I'm grateful to have found the Grassroots Fitness Project!
This is the only gym that can get me working out at 6am! I’ve taken other workout classes in the neighborhood and am consistently impressed at how Grassroots outpaces all others. The focus on strength, form, consistency, and community is unparalleled. This small business is truly an asset to the UWS community!

My 12-year-old son loves the boys strength class! It has improved his muscle tone and flexibility and made him a better and more confident athlete. His teacher Wil is also wonderfully inspiring to the kids and my son always leaves the class feeling great, physically and mentally. Grassroots also just has a welcoming family feel, with uniformly wonderful teachers. I couldn't recommend the class or the organization more highly!

I just cannot speak highly enough about my experience at Grassroots Fitness Project. Initially I started private training with Wil, Who owns the facility with his incredible wife, Heather. This dynamic duo has put together an environment that many people call home. I’ve witnessed over the years of personal training the incredible energy and camaraderie amongst the Women’s Strength fitness classes. I knew I needed to be a part of it and this winter I made it happen. I am a regular on Mondays in the Women’s Strength class and have learned how to weight lift and improve my strength and overall fitness.
I still train individually as I am a huge believer in personal training. My amazing trainer now, Stef understands the importance of creating a personalized training plan for each of her clients. Working around injuries and Individual goals to try to be the strongest and best you can be at your sport (golf & tennis for me) Is a priority when I train a Grassroots.
Grassroots has worked hard to create an environment that is positive and uplifting to all. Don’t walk but run to Grassroots Fitness Project. You certainly will be glad you did !

I started personal training with Sammie three weeks ago after being sedentary for awhile and have been surprised by how quickly I've seen results. I particularly appreciate that Tori listened to my concerns and was so thoughtful about pairing me with a trainer who is the right fit. I immediately felt comfortable working out in the space - the vibe is friendly and inclusive and the clientele are diverse. If you're lucky, you'll be cheered on by Rico the emotional support doodle. My only complaint is that he hasn't been at all my sessions.

I’ve been doing the women’s strength class for about 6 months have seen incredible changes in my body. Joined a few weeks ago and have been blown away by the community here. Was always too intimidated to try lifting on my own, but the Women Strength program has been a total gamechanger. The classes are small, so you can really nail the moves. The people in the class are also very welcoming and encouraging, which makes the workouts fun but also push you to become stronger. Also love that the instructors pay close attention to your form and progress, which makes it feel very personalized. Have had a blast joining Grassroots. There is truly nothing else like it!

I've been doing personal training and classes with Grassroots since September 2023 when I finally decided I needed to supplement my recent weight loss with strength training. The trainers performed an assessment and developed a customized plan to address areas where I needed to improve. At first, I was apprehensive of personal training, because I had been lifting weights and exercising since I was 16, but I've never had the quality of workout and results since I've started with Grassroots.
The workouts (personal training and classes) are built around circuits that work the entire body. The trainers are always varying the exercises so the workouts remain challenging and interesting. Not only are the workouts wonderful, but the environment and staff are helpful and friendly.

This is the best Gym! Having lived in NYC for 28 years, I've tried every fitness class and every new fitness pop up! However, Grassroots Fitness, owned by husband and wife duo Will and Heather, is the one work out place that truly feels like a second family. Once you walk through the door at GF, you are immediately greeted and welcomed into the space. I first started GF as a client taking privates with Heather. Her attention to detail with her thorough entry evaluation was impressive. I'm not as young and spry as I used to be so we talked about areas that needed strengthening and how were were going to achieve realistic goals. I found her to have a nice mixture of thoughtfulness, with carefulness and challenge. Then I moved over to the Women's Strength classes which are small, group classes (women-only) where we deep dive with mobility, strengthening as well as toning. Women working out together immediately create a natural, supportive bond and the dynamics of each group (no matter the age) I found to be very helpful to gaining confidence to try new exercises that once scared me (lifting heavy weights/doing back squats/bench pressing). I'm also a huge fan of the Core & Restore class that aims to build core strength while also teaching restorative breathing and stretching moves. Because this gym is family run, you get that extra attention that, quite honestly, I found lacking at other gyms. Heather and Will go above and beyond to connect with their clients on a personal as well as physical level. They take great pride in their clientele and that shows.

I have been going to Grassroots for over 5 years. It is the single best decision regarding fitness that I made. I have belonged to other gyms, but this is the first that has made a difference. Heather and Wil are knowledgeable in what works for you and supportive of an individual's goals. Our entire family have seen benefits in our personal health and goals. My sisters have now even joined (and they live in another state!). My son started here while in middle school to increase his strength to support his rock climbing, my husband for flexibility to support his golf game, and me to bring back my health, strength and well-being! I would not hesitate to recommend this gym to anyone, whether 10 years, 30 years, 50 years or 70 years.

This is the best gym in the world! My family and I have been going to Heather and Wil for over 16 years. Our son and daughter started working out with them at ages 5 and 7. It is a truly personal experience and they have become like family to us. The workouts change every week and are never stale. Heather and Wil cover everything from getting in shape to helping recover from an injury. They really care about their clients and also are very active in the community. They are always encouraging and we have all seen a huge improvement in our health and fitness which I completely attribute to them! We love them!!

Grassroots is a family owned business that has been an invaluable asset to our family and we love that it is right in our neighborhood. My daughter takes the girls strength and parkour classes and loves them! I take Women’s Strength and Strength and Conditioning. These are small group exercise classes where you get individualized attention to make sure you are not only getting the best out of your workout but also that you are doing things correctly so you don’t injure yourself. My son used to receive occupational and physical therapy at school because he was delayed in fine motor skills and strength develop (weak core). We decided to supplement that with Grassroots training. He has since graduated from the OT and PT he received at school but most importantly his strength training has given him a lot of confidence that he didn’t have prior. Thank you Grassroots!

Grassroots is a huge asset to the community and has it all over the other chain gyms. Wil and Heather practice what they preach and instantly make you feel welcome and at ease, and heroic for working out. This was a huge plus for me as someone with a pre-conceived notion of how gyms might be. The facility is clean and they offer many different types of classes for children and adults. The best part of all, however, might be the trainers and clientele that are attracted to this welcoming atmosphere and add to it. I’ve noticed that I’ve become more confident physically and mentally since training here, and I can’t say that about any other gym I’ve been to. You can’t replicate the atmosphere here. It’s a winner. You just have to experience it for yourself and I hope that you do.

I've been loyal to Grassroots since 2013, and I have been hooked ever since. I was never super into fitness, and Grassroots has managed to make fitness a priority in my life and I've been consistently working out with them for many years. Their virtual programs during COVID were amazing, and I was even able to work out more than I did pre-COVID! Heather and Wil are genuinely interested in all their clients and really get to you know you on a personal level. All the trainers they hire are of the best quality in the industry. If you’re looking for a boutique workout experience with terrific trainers, a cool community of like-minded members, and a clean, comfortable facility, Grassroots could be your happy place.
I’m a former athlete in half-decent shape who loves to train, but Grassroots caters to and embraces all types, ages, and fitness levels. Some of my favorite people to see and interact with are the seniors who have been long-time regulars.
Their space is clean, well-outfitted with gear for just about any training routine, and convenient (close to transportation, easy to access).
Wil and Heather (the owners) are warm, real, and incredibly knowledgeable. They are disarming and immediately helped overcome any fear or intimidation I felt walking into a new gym.
When I showed up, I was focused on strength. But Will quickly recognized that what I really needed was improved flexibility and mobility in order to build a foundation to get stronger. We have adjusted my workouts as I’ve gotten older to avoid injury and ensure my priorities and goals are always being considered. This is not a cookie cutter, one size fits all approach. The trainers at Grassroots LISTEN, and they build customs programs based on your needs.
I haven’t taken a group fitness class at GRFP, but I have watched 100s of them. They are challenging, but the members work out like they are all in it together.
Will and Heather have created a real community of motivated, connected people at Grassroots. It’s a special place created by special people, and while I know the purpose of this review is to help attract new customers, secretly, I hope that I can keep this gem of a training facility to myself.

I love going to classes at Grassroots! Heather, Wil and the rest of the staff are terrific instructors who always focus on the individual client’s needs. Because group classes are small, I always get individual feedback. I have learned how best to do specific exercises and to build strength- a feature that I rarely experience in large group classes. I find the classes challenging but am never in the position of feeling pressured to do a skill I am not comfortable with- they are very knowledgeable in adjusting to each participant’s level. They are always encouraging, and in their years of building Grassroots, they have created a community of clients who truly care about and encourage other- an important aspect to get me moving and stay motivated!
