This is for Cian the manager at the location, he was extremely helpful at mitigating the atmosphere at the gym.
I’m autistic and suffer horribly from overstimulation and usually avoid public spaces because of it but I’ve been trying to get fit and overcome a slight paralysis from an injury.
He was a bit apprehensive at first about my autism as most people are lol.
I came to him about the situation and he assured me that I belonged and held space to listen. I never experienced such thoughtful and considerate treatment.

I took Body Pump with @Hassna yesterday, and she is phenomenal. My sister first experienced her by chance when she subbed at the 76th Street location, and she fell in love with her class instantly. We actually looked up her name afterward just so we could follow her—and we found her at the 7:30 pm class at 91st Street. BEST. DECISION. EVER.
She absolutely kicks your behind in the best possible way. You leave drenched, shaking, and feeling so proud of yourself. She works every part of your upper body—back, chest, triceps, biceps—and you feel it the next day in that “this is good pain” kind of way that makes you want to come back for more.
But what makes her stand out isn’t just the workout—it’s her heart.
From the moment we walked in, she was warm, welcoming, and attentive. She greeted everyone, asked if there were any first-timers, and made sure they felt comfortable. I watched her help a gentleman who was new and a bit lost, and she guided him kindly and patiently. She also checked in with older participants to make sure no one was straining or hurting themselves. That level of care is rare.
What impressed me most is that she works out with us the entire time. So many instructors just call out directions, but she models every move, every rep, with perfect form—even while walking around correcting and supporting others. She had about 60 pounds on her bar and still gave us nonstop energy, motivation, and encouragement.
Her positivity is contagious, her energy is unmatched, and her class is challenging in the best way. My sister and I are officially hooked and will absolutely be coming back. She’s truly exceptional.
If you’re thinking about trying her class—GO. You won’t regret it.

I echo the review about the renovation because there is very limited functional training / free workout space now.
I understand the intentions equipping the gym with new equipments but management overdid it and flooded the floor with equipments that people don’t need / use. Recommend removing some of the equipments on the lower floor for free weights / functional training.

I’m really disappointed with the customer service here. I was charged for a training session even though my account was frozen at the time. When I contacted the front desk and the manager, no one got back to me for an entire week. I had to call repeatedly just to get any update.
They told me I had to use the session by the end of the month, even though the charge shouldn’t have happened in the first place. On top of that, they refused to give me a refund.

Edit (Nov ‘25): After the renovation, I need to change my previous 3-star review to 1-star. The recent changes make absolutely zero sense, and now the bottom floor cluttered with machines and virtually impossible to walk through. And not only did they not address my earlier feedback about not having enough benches near the dumbbells, but they actually removed one of the 5 adjustable benches and replaced it with a decline bench that no one uses and is just taking up valuable space.
I really, truly don’t understand who was in charge of the renovation, but like others have mentioned in the reviews, clearly they didn’t base the redesign on customer feedback.
Previous Review (Sep ‘25):
This place is ok for the price, especially if you live close by, but misses the mark on a few very basic but very essential things.
1. There are only 5 adjustable benches in the weight room, despite the fact that there’s room for at least 1-2 more. This means that there’s always a wait for the benches no matter the time of day, which can be annoying if you’re trying to get in a quick workout before or after work.
2. For some reason, there isn’t a single individual-handle attachment for the cable machines in the entire weight room. I don’t know if they were stolen and NYSC just never replaced them, but this means you can’t do single-arm anything on any of the machines.
3. The ceiling consistently leaks in random places when it rains. Not really a huge inconvenience as you can just avoid those areas, but kind of a telling sign on how they manage the place.
Overall, this NYSC an ok option and way cheaper than the Equinox next door, so I guess that’s why they don’t feel the need to invest in their equipment, but if you’re in the market for an upscale gym experience or don’t live within 2-3 blocks, I’d look elsewhere.

The first floor is alright but the changes downstairs are disappointing. Some of the new machines are cool, but a lot of them are repetitive or worse than what they previously had, just taking up space. They also removed popular equipment with no suitable replacements. The employees are all great except the manager, he's rude and unhelpful

I really like this gym, it has all the equipment, classes, and weights you need 💪🏽 The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is great ✨
My only comment is that the 91st & 3rd location has too many machines, so there isn’t much open space for those of us who prefer training without machines 🤸🏻♀️
Other than that, it’s a great place to work out and I always enjoy coming here! 🙌🏼🏋🏽♀️

Half the staff a friendly and accommodating. Some appear to be in physical distress.
The new addition of equipment is kind of jarring. They’re kind of awkward, and there are too many different varieties of plates.

I have been going to this gym for years and it used to be my favourite NYSC branch until the recent introduction of the new manager, a bald man with an incredible talent for creating problems where there are none. On every single one of my visits now he interrupts my exercise rudely to tell me that something or other I am doing is now against the rules - and it’s amazing how many new rules there are every time he is around, and also how often these rules change spontaneously. Again, I have been going to this gym for years not being bothered (the rest of the staff are all friendly). I’m all for new rules being implemented if it’s for the health and safety of everyone in the gym, but they shouldn’t be completely random, exist only when 1 person is around, and also could very well be communicated in a polite way.
Update: I have been made aware now that the manager’s name is Cian/Chris and that many other members (and even the staff!) have similar complaints. Treat people better, Cian/Chris!

I’ve been going to this gym for over three years and generally liked it (with friendly staff and overall cost for value), but I’ve felt mixed about the recent renovations.
They added a lot of new machines, which is great in theory, but the space now feels much more crowded, and some of the new equipment isn’t as functional or well-designed as before. For example, the new bicep curl and squat assist machines downstairs are not very intuitive to use, and even the staff had trouble adjusting the seat height for me. I have been to various gyms for more than a decade, and have not encountered difficulty with using equipment.
It’s also disappointing to see fewer squat racks available — I’ve heard a lot of members mention the same concern. Looking forward to seeing them bring more back (but when?)
Lastly, the new layout feels more cramped (almost like an LA Fitness), with only the back room left for stretching or core work. Overall, I hope the gym reconsiders some of these changes and brings back a bit of the comfort and usability it once had.

I’ve really enjoyed this studio and its classes, but recently the management decisions have made the experience frustrating. The new policy removing the punching bags and limiting client access to the studio outside of class times has taken away a lot of what made this place great. Many of us valued the open studio time for personal practice and consistency, and it feels discouraging not to have that option anymore.
I hope the management reconsiders these restrictions and finds a balance that supports both structured classes and member independence — that was part of what made this community special.

BEST GYM ON THE UES. Not to mention the best deal! This location had a shift in management about a year ago when Cian and his team joined and changed everything in the best way possible. He and his team have improved this gym more in the past year than the 15 years prior that I have been a member at this location. They recently underwent a complete renovation and I could not be happier! The staff is welcoming and knowledgeable, the gym is kept immaculately clean and I am genuinely grateful for all of their continuous hard work. Thank you, Cian! Also, Bob is a staple here. He always greets you with a smile, is a fantastic employee/trainer and never stops encouraging you to be the best version of yourself. (He also has excellent taste in video games) 5 STARS.

Who thought it was a good idea to take this gym down to one single squat rack? Unfortunately I'm stuck with 10 more months on my membership, this is now a completely different and far worse gym than when I signed up.
Update: the flood of clearly astroturfed positive reviews makes it pretty clear that they don't intend to admit they screwed up, and that it's not gonna happen because the manager is taking the criticism incredibly personally, which was obvious with how incredibly rude he was when I complained in person about ruining this gym.

I came here to leave a review related to the renovations and am now cracking up at the obviously fake or at least requested reviews praising the renovations and the manager (as if the guests to the gym are regularly interacting with him during their workouts or something). Notice they didn't start pouring in until after the slew of negative reviews, quite the coincidence! Seriously, I went back in time and there were no positive mentions of management prior to this recent push and we're expected to think those are organic feedback out of the blue?
And that tells you all you need to know about the renovation situation. Instead of listening to gym members and trying to fix the negative situation they created for their customers with this renovation, they try to bury the negative feedback with fake reviews telling people they need to change their workout routine? Give me a break.
The renovation is obviously straight up bad and every actual review that isn't like "wow best gym ever" (as if they wouldn't be going to the equinox around the corner if they could afford it) show all the valid criticisms. Only 1 squat rack, new machines are impractical with the plates (who cares how they smell????? Is that why you go to the gym????), no open space anymore, and they removed machines that they honestly should have been adding more of just based on how frequently I was waiting for them before.
Just total nonsense. I've started going to a different location for the time being, but I will definitely be canceling my membership after seeing these nonsense fake reviews ("I felt like I was in a dream"? Seriously? lol) and wouldn't recommend signing up here until management grows up.

Previously I had nothing but good things to say about this location, but the renovation has left me very disappointed. The open space has been almost entirely cut, leaving a small and overcrowded section that feels like an afterthought for anyone wanting to use free weights, stretch, or do anything that is non-machine.
The combined studio now feels tacky, unlike the previous set up where I was very impressed with how premium the cycle studio felt.
Will likely not be renewing my membership, which is unfortunate because I really did love this location previously!

The renovation is terrible. It’s an overcrowded maze of plate loaded machines downstairs with almost no place to work with free weights unless you cram yourself awkwardly into a corner. There’s barely any space to walk around without constantly dodging people loading up machines.
And despite having all these new machines they somehow don’t have the essentials. They got rid of all but one squat rack so have fun waiting if you go to the gym at peak hours. Things like the hyperextension bench and hip thrust are gone.
If you want to do 5 machine variations of the same movement for your workouts then i guess it’s fine but otherwise go to a different location.

I have concerns with the recent changes at the gym -- most of the new machines require you to use plates to adjust the weight. If you’ve been to a gym before, you know how often people forget to rerack their weights. and if you have any mobility issues, whether due to injuries, age, or anything else, the equipment is difficult to use... I like and use plate loaded machines but I don’t want my entire workout to be loading and unloading a machine.
With pin loaded machines you can easily make adjustments and help gain confidence if you’re a beginner or coming back from an injury. It’s a mistake to remove all of them (and almost all the squat racks...)
I enjoy using a mix of machine types/free weights/bodyweight/etc and a good gym has a range of equipment and space to do your own thing
This NYSC used to meet the needs of a wide range of people who had different goals or styles of exercising. Now you are forced into working out a certain way. I wonder if they asked for any feedback from members before implementing these changes because it doesn’t seem like it.

It's been renovated and now there is only one squat rack?? Also there is literally nowhere in the gym to do deadlifting anymore. I don't know how this was planned but without these very essential things, I'm strongly considering leaving. there is no free barbell anywhere in the gym other than at the bench presses and the single squat rack. These things were used frequently by many people so I just can't understand the thinking behind this. Would love to know if fixes are coming because my workout plan just got completely cut off without the ability to deadlift at all.

New review 10/14/25
The 91st Street location used to be very nice. It’s now been renovated and it is not good for Group Classes. The Spin room is now used for Personal Training and seems to be empty most of the time. The spin bikes have been moved into the “gym” and are only inches apart. It will be scary if there is another COVID or Flu outbreak. The bikes take up 1/3 of the gym, so space between mats for the Body Conditioning Class is tight. It impedes movement and does not feel safe. Everyone I’ve chatted with about these changes also seems upset and agrees there was plenty of room elsewhere in the facility that could have accommodated Personal Training without ruining the Group Classes space.
Prior review:
The Spin Instructor, Wellington, is thorough and a lot of fun. He provides a lot of individual instruction during the class and really makes an effort to get to know each participant. He’s one of the best Spin Instructors I’ve had.

This gym was recently renovated and for the most part its good apart from one big problem. There is only one squat rack now, which seems very strange because so many people use squat racks including myself, also the only deadlifting platform was removed. I don't understand why there were 7 new chest press machines added but no squat racks. If you're like me and mostly do free weights or compound lifts this gym has definitely downgraded.

Update: downgrading to 2 stars (from 4)
They recently replaced all but 1 squat rack with plate loaded pivot, iso, and other machines. They also removed the only lifting platform and most of the adjustable benches. It feels like an oversized apt/hotel gym.
I am not a powerlifter, I mostly run/cycle outdoors, but use free weights to cross train 1-2 times per week. For those that prefer free weights, the gym is now nearly unusable.
Prior review: This NYSC is noticeably cleaner and better maintained than it was a year prior. The free weight areas are well maintained, staff is very friendly, and I rarely need to wait for equipment.
I switched from the Equinox across the street in 2023 because I couldn’t justify the premium for my 1-2x per week workouts. I don’t know if management or something else changed, but kudos to the current team, because in the time since I joined, the bathrooms are much cleaner, weight area is far better maintained, and a lot of the old benches and bars were changed out.

The gym was recently renovated, and there is now not enough equipment to service the amount of people there. Particularly there is now only one squat rack, which is not enough considering all the members that use it. I’ve loved coming to this gym for the past year, but this week they got rid of the hip thrust machine, which is by far the most important machine for my workouts. Apparently it’s going to be replaced by smith machines, which are not the same at all. Frankly I think it’s a sexist move, since women disproportionately use that machine. It was already relegated to a shaky corner a few months ago. Seriously reconsidering my membership over this.
Looking forward to updating my review once they bring that machine back!

I am editing my post due to the management. The teachers are fanstastic (Wellington, Pam, Micah and Anthony) and I hope they don't leave because of all the negative changes made by the manager who came in last year. Since the new management came, the gym has steadily gone downhill. Many of the cardio classes (which were well attended) were cut and now the spin room is gone to make room for a personal training area. There is plenty of space at this location for personal training. Now you can't hear the music or instructor teaching the spin class due to the fans and that the speakers are facing away from the bikes. The management does not care about the members and likely does not seem to care for the instructors. If you are looking to join the 91st and 3rd location, go elsewhere.

The classrooms have been rearranged to create am the spin and exercise classes together in one room, which is too small to accommodate all the equipment. They did this to give personal training sessions (which make more money for the club) their own room.
I have loved this club for decades, but no more. The crowding is now subhuman and the classes have been cut back because of this room change. Awful!

I’ve really enjoyed using the E 91st street location for an about a year for cycling classes. However, the recent relocation of the cycling classes and reduction in the class offerings has been extremely disappointing. The new location does not allow for easy bike setup, and the trophies at the back of the room are in the way of mounting onto the bike. Additionally, if classes remain cut, I will still want to cycle and just find a new gym to do so.

Update: 9/30/25
Sadly I have to lower my review of the 91st St. club to reflect how quickly bad management decisions can destroy a club. NYSC hosted multiple fitness classes that were filled to capacity. When members asked for more classes the new manager curtly replied “no”. In fact, many members have witnessed this manager’s
abusive treatment of instructors and rude demeanor towards members who bring forth concerns or ask questions. Most recently this manager decided to remove the bikes from the spinning studio and make it a personal training room. This spinning room had hosted over 275 members in spinning classes, per week. This management has prioritized the needs of a few members over the 750+ members who take fitness classes each week! (The irony is this new personal training room is barely used, and there are multiple spaces, in the back of the club, that could have been converted into a personal training room without inconveniencing anyone!)
Then they shoved 27 spin bikes in the corner of the one fitness room left, and have members ride, in the corner, inches apart in an already crowded room. When members voiced their concerns the manager curtly replied “you’ll get used to it”. In addition, instead of increasing the number of spin and body conditioning classes, which are consistently filled to capacity, they cut classes so many members are unable to utilize the fitness classes in the club. NYSC was know for having good instructors with great classes, so it’s concerning that this bad treatment of instructors, and insensitivity to members will cause these instructors to leave.
It is truly disconcerting to see such poor decisions by new management ruin a club. There are many options for fitness clubs in NYC and, sadly, I can no longer recommend this club. I would strongly urge anyone looking to find a fitness club to look elsewhere. NYSC is no longer an option for a full and enjoyable fitness experience.
Previous Old Review:
I love this club. It’s down to earth, has a lot of classes, and super convenient. They are also responsive to members. Instructor are friendly ,especially Pam, who has the best spin class! Jess gives a great body conditioning that’s fun and effective!! In fact all the instructors give great classes. Also The Bonus is it’s less expensive than many clubs around here, but you get just as much at NYSC without the attitude or high cost!

I have been a member of this club for almost 6 years, and as someone with prior experience as a front desk supervisor at a well-known gym in Northern California, I’d like to provide some positive, as well as some constructive feedback.
The gym itself is very well-equipped and offers everything needed for an effective workout. There are no major gaps in equipment availability. During peak weekday evenings, it can sometimes be challenging to find open machines or spaces, but this is a very common experience across most fitness centers.
The membership pricing is fair and offers strong value, especially considering the club’s reasonable hours and convenient location on the UES.
The staff, for the most part, are friendly and professional. The personal trainers, in particular, demonstrate genuine care for their clients’ progress and consistently advocate for their success.
That said, I and several other members have had negative interactions with a staff member named Chris. On multiple occasions, he has been discourteous toward both myself and other clients. Additionally, he has insisted on charging for first-time guest passes, even when visitors qualified for the complimentary trial pass advertised on the gym’s website. Unfortunately, this has discouraged potential new members—one of my friends who had just moved to New York was so put off by the experience that they chose to join Equinox across the street instead.
Overall, this remains a high-quality fitness center that provides excellent value. My only recommendation would be for management to address these service inconsistencies, ensuring that all staff interactions align with the club’s otherwise positive reputation.

I went to Hassna’s Body Pump class tonight at 7:30 pm, and she is absolutely amazing! I’ve been doing Body Pump for over 10 years, and she’s one of the most energetic and fun instructors I’ve ever had. I loved how she brought so much energy to the class, and her weight selection inspired me to push myself and increase my weights. So thankful for incredible instructors like Hassna—she makes working out a joy!

After I joined NYSC on August 28, I was surprised to receive an unexpected $100 extra charge. Yesterday, on my way to the gym, I stopped by the office of Cian, the General Manager, who gave me the initial tour and helped me sign up. His office is located right by the gym entrance, and there were no signs indicating restricted access.
When I knocked on his door, Cian responded rudely and overreacted. He claimed the extra charge was automatically generated by the system. However, I clearly remember our first conversation—he repeated several times that I would be charged $1 for August, $80 for September, and then $100 starting in October. Instead, all of those charges were applied at once.
I remained polite and respectful throughout the interaction. As someone with university degrees in psychology and sociology, and as a family man, I always try to approach situations with understanding and calm. That’s why I was especially surprised by how dismissive and unprofessional his behavior was.
Eventually, he said he would add a note in the system to ensure I’m not charged again in October.
I’ve been to gyms all around the world and have never experienced such treatment. I understand that New York can be intense, but my experience with Cian felt unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming.

30$ day pass / single entry fee. They offer a free trial.
Opinion from an average office gym sis with 6 years of disgreaiful results (181cm x 92kg @11%).
Gym in lower ground with no windows.
Bodybuilding: everything you need, cables, lat machine, pulley, dumbbells up to 60kg, all isotonic machines.
Powerlifting:
- squat: 2 half racks. They clearly are not fan of those, you will find them in the corner.
- Deadlift: no idea where you can do it.
- Bench: precor bench, one of the worst existing. No safety bar, who needs them anyway. Ultra hyper low to the ground. Good to end your rotator cuff in one blow.

I’ve been going to this gym for three years, and every summer it’s the same story—the AC in the lower level never works. Every time you ask about it, they give the same empty promises: “It’s being fixed.” But nothing ever changes.
Yesterday, I saw an elderly man nearly pass out from the heat—I had to bring him water myself. It’s not just uncomfortable anymore, it’s dangerous.
At this point, it’s hard to believe this place is operating within legal standards. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Department of Buildings or the Health Department shows up soon. Frankly, they should. No one should be working out in these conditions. It’s unacceptable.

The NYS on 3rd Avenue & 91st has the worst management. It makes no difference how much you report a problem it will never get taken care of. The TVs on the cardio machines have not worked in months. When you ask when they will be fixed, you get a dumb answer, which is no answer at all. This gym has never been managed well & will always be exactly what it is which is a disaster.

Hassna is an enthusiastic and friendly instructor. She makes sure to notice and actively welcome newcomers and puts extra effort into learning people’s names in her BodyPump classes. I adore Vivian’s vibe and teaching style to the point that I regularly trek across town to go to her classes when I can actually get a slot (her Bodycombat class was my absolute favorite of all time). Her BodyPump classes fill up literally within the first minute on the app. The bureaucracy of NYSC can be frustrating with the cancellation of popular classes without adequate replacements, but I’ve enjoyed the class instructors and front desk staff and wish the company appreciated them more.

I have been a member of NY Sports Club for over a year. I simply run on the treadmill and lift weights a couple times a week.. I now want to learn how to use machines to build strength as I age. I signed up for my complimentary introduction to the gym (yes… it took me awhile to do this) and spent an hour with the trainer Brittany. She gave me good advice on how to use the machines. She was patient and tough. We can’t be lazy to see results. Thank you Brittany:). I am now more motivated to improve my health with strength training.

This is one of the former NYSC locations which originally opened with a pool in it’s original layout, included into its membership tier rates. However they closed out the poolside addition due to the considerable overwhelming overhead expenditures, [post-pandemic], following the club’s membership which never fully recovered to its pre-pandemic statistics. The upper Eastside gym has nonetheless become a hallmark niche for many people who reside there, based on its proximity to the convenient hours of operation and extensive workout facilities. The Pros: easy, friendly community based gym, very popular and very relaxed. The Cons: horrible yoga classes, and a generalized lack of qualified course instructors. Yes, the greatest downside centering the NYSC group class program is its lack of qualified yoga teachers. Many of whom have already moved onto better positions elsewhere at their competitors’ expense to health club companies or independent businesses privately. Unlike Equinox, The Chelsea Piers Group, and so on, these higher end luxury brands can afford the best group class instructors and pay them handsomely. But because the fallout was so heavy losing the number of its workers, the NYSC directors revamped the entire group class schedules based on the shortage of qualifying group instructors. Leaving whoever could teach it in their stead. And like many seasoned yoga devotees, putting up with the kind of certification incompetency [others], in other places, wouldn’t have met with coaching from a brand of fitness in a dismal practice to every respect of judging the discipline and quality to healthier yoga fidelity. It’s of course impossible for anyone to rate a yoga instructor’s commitment to an organization regardless of how awful they are in terms of performance or figure that the club can lose their membership count in the end. So much so, that there’s no choice but to keep the tolerated inconsistency. Regardless of whatever it might mean. This is a great location, but, then again, if power lifting is a huge draw for anybody wanting to workout with a bevy of outstanding spectacular great athletes and jocks, this is definitely going to be the place to be whether you’re single, married, or otherwise partnered to one … just be careful and skipjack any of the yoga classes— it’s less than certifying. Or even an ideal practice especially for starting from a “child’s pose” as a primer for the first initial position … (Who does this crap) … ?? Ridiculous to think that this is unthinkable out of all of the most incredibly wonderful masters of yoga [we experienced] it would not be in a meditative state Buddha would have given. Ultimately it’s the most important aspect of yoga meditation to be present and preserved. Yet, ‘unfortunately’ it doesn’t seem to really work with whatever the meditation program is for this one there … regardless of how intellectually knowledgeable it appears to center on what “the practice” practices!! On social media across all platforms. Highly untenable and downright up-dawg poor.
