I can workout really early which is the only time I like to go. It’s a wide open gym with lots of great machines. I love the treadmill. It’s a clean environment and not too noisy. Great perks too.

The gym was going great until last night September 5th, 8pm. Someone broke in into my locker and took my cash and then closed the locker right back up so I wouldn't notice. They walked away with a few hundred dollars. The gym admitted they are having theft issues lately but instead of letting members know they say nothing. Now I'm out a few hundred dollars and they aren't going to do anything about it. Filed a police report but I doubt anything is going to come from it. Never again ambi stepping foot in this place.

Rejoined since I’m in the area again. Extremely clean which is great for the morale. Polite and welcoming atmosphere and the machine maintenance is good, seems they are serviced regularly. However - the gym is really lacking in a lot of machines. There is a ton of empty floor space. More than enough to still have a substantial amount to do calisthenics while still adding machines. For instance there’s no incline or decline chest press machines. No high row machines. No tricep push down machine. And most of the machines aren’t quite as adjustable as others I’ve used. Example: hip abduction and adduction machines don’t have adjustable seats which is important. There’s also only one of a lot of popular machines like fly/delt.

A lot of new equipment, which is nice, but they took away most of the necessities for anyone that wants to do abs. They also have a major problem with employees showing up on time. They’re open 5 AM during the week 7 AM on the weekends, however, it’s more like 6 or 630 on weekdays and 8 or 830 on the weekends before an employee arrives to open. Just seems like they don’t care to open on time. They also shut the heat off when they close the night before. So everything is ice cold when you show up in the morning.

I do like this gym a lot but I wished it stayed open later. This gym is close to home and the other location in deer park. Deer park closes at 11 but I don’t want to have to travel all the way over there. Especially on Fridays when the gym closes at 9. If this gym ever changes its hours to 11 I’ll give this rating a 5!

12/21/23 Update:
This gym has done a 180. All the equipment is top of the line. There are more than enough benches, platforms, squat racks and space so you never have to wait for anything. There’s still only 2 stationary bikes but there’s plenty to do otherwise. The water bottle filler was added. Really can’t ask for more for how I enjoy working out. Great job to the owner(s)!!

I’m a member here but probably not for much longer. That’s for the following reasons:
1. There is nowhere to fill up a water bottle. The water fountain in the main area just trickles out. Probably wouldn’t use it the way it’s intended, either. Have to use a sink to fill a water bottle.
2. Equipment is constantly out of order. Not just once in a while, but quite frequently.
3. Equipment has recently been removed. There may be a plan for new stuff, but it’s not posted anywhere. We are talking about the second flat barbell bench, air assault bikes, recumbent bikes and adjustable benches. Pieces of equipment that get used frequently, especially at peak hours.
4. There’s ONE regular exercise bike in the entire place.

The staff, location, cost and size of the gym are great. I understand it is under new ownership as well, so hopefully something changes soon. This gym is convenient for where I live and I’d like to keep going here but I’m having trouble finding a reasons to stay.

Recently it was decided to renovate the facility. While this was a good intention, the handling was less than desirable. Still a month in and not finished. Locker rooms are all but unavailable with no place to change woth dignity. Half tue equipment is still not available and duct work is still exposed as seen in photos. It would have been safer/more efficient to close gulym for one month, freeze memberships and have all work done prior to re-opening instead of this process, which inconveniences members and puts some in potential hazardous conditions.

Look elsewhere. General manager by the name of Lee has quite the condescending/snarky tone. This gym has been through several ownership changes in the last three years alone and the optics show Lee is not getting the job done either. Bench press has gone missing, equipment is frequently broken and pieces will go missing for weeks at a time, weights are never in the proper spot and they will never (and I mean ever) handle anything regarding your billing properly (which you can no longer do over the phone). Just avoid it at all costs. I don’t even leave reviews but I’ve shrugged a lot off regarding Retro Bay Shore, this one has been a long time coming. Be better Lee

Several machines are broken and not fixed for months. Bathrooms are trashed, falling apart.. toilets don't work, no locks on stalls. Down to one bench! So you never have a chance to get on it, even the eight racks are disappearing. In the summer there's barely AC, fans are always off. Unreal how absent the new owners are, if I owned this place I'd be on top of everything due to the fact I take everyone's money every month. Have some pride in your place. Many of us complain about this place. I've been to four other gyms this month as comparison. I'll delete this when the owner wakes up and takes care of this place.

I came as a guest and had the best experience at this gym! I was greeted by the sweetest owner, Grace, and she made me feel so welcomed and comfortable. The gym is spotless and there’s so many accessible machines and equipment to choose from. Grabbing a protein shake on the way out was awesome too. By far the best gym I’ve ever been to. Been in there multiple times to cancel my membership, every time the “manager” says its been cancelled and its not. Just got charged AGAIN for another month, last month I cancelled it and she said she the system wouldn't allow her to refund me… NOW another month later get charged again. I want my membership cancelled and to be refunded for BOTH months. I am never doing business here again, nor will I recommend to anyone.

It feels like you’re in a highschool locker room or in a basement that desperately needs a dehumidifier. I can’t even enjoy workouts here anymore and I’ve given this gym enough time and money already. You can clean the equipment all you want but it won’t fix the issues that simple and proper ventilation would. STILL WOULD RECOMMEND. This gym does the job. Two things it smells like mildew and old sweat in the gym.I came to conclusion it has to be the weights and the cloth hand bar that you put on the cables,Because they are gross looking and look a hundred years old.I love the movie room but it’s never on anymore and you can never see it!! Beautiful facility with absolutely everything you can possibly need. Very well maintained and more importantly CLEAN. What I enjoy most about Retro Bayshore is the community of people. The members are supportive and friendly. The staff is courteous, attentive, and personable. To share one specific encounter, I dropped an airpod inside of the stair master (how? I have no idea) I notified staff and within minutes they had taken the machine apart to retrieve it.

I travel from a few towns over just to train here. When equipment needs servicing it is fixed promptly. Rates are very reasonable as well.

My husband used this gym and when the pandemic hit they stopped charging our card monthly. We moved and got a new credit card. We are now having creditors call both of us for months of charges. Music played here is too loud. I do wear headphones, but at the volume that I listen to music at, I can still hear the gym speakers blasting music. I’d have to boost my headphone volume to unsafe levels in order for it to be loud enough to block out the gyms music. This can cause long term hearing loss. Most people wear headphones while they workout anyway, so there is no reason to have the gyms music so loud. Using an app on my phone, I measured the noise level to be an average of 77.6 dB. Please lower the music played at this gym.

DO NOT JOIN HERE. NO way. Can't believe they charged for another month! I cancelled in March for moving, then of course gym closed due to COVID. I understood I would be charged one more month for services available in APRIL. But not a random charge in SEPTEMBER because of "policies." Their excuse? "Unprecedented times" YES THEY ARE. Which means the organization should reconsider THEIR POLICES.

So I had a membership with retro but had been working so much hadn't really used my membership in like 8 months. So during this whole covid crisis I was working the entire time and did not use their facilities as all due to the fact they were closed. Some how " I missed a payment" and they reported me the the creditors and gave me a derogatory remark!! I was given no notice by phone,text, mail, or email that a payment had been missed to correct the mistake.I sqaured that debt the day of and payed the creditors. When I contacted their financial department to cancel I was told I would have to go to the gym in person. During the time they were closed they charged me for a gym that was not open. They are still closed and this issue has yet to be settled. I have went to this gym 2 different times and they always try to report you to creditors even if you have money in your account. What they are doing is very shady and i do not reccomend this place what so ever. Planet fitness is a better option if you dont want to get taken advantage of for money you worked hard for.

Stay away. I joined the end of June and was also informed I can cancel at any time by Steve etc. I wanted to get healthier as I suffer from High Blood Pressure and I informed them about this and I needed to start slow.
After a nearly 40 minute free "assessment" session lifting my own body weight and flipping a truck tire. etc. with a trainer named Tyler, I almost blacked out. It took 15-20 minutes of me sitting in a chair before some of the dizziness subsided and I was well enough to leave. During that time, Tyler was still trying to sell me on using him for future workouts at the same time apologizing for working me too hard during the assessment. Who does that while someone is ready to pass out?
A day or so later I called to speak to Steve about canceling, he was busy and never returned my call. They claimed that I needed a doctor's note to cancel, which I provided, again in person. They still haven't canceled my membership. I have never once used their gym beyond my first free assessment session. I am not looking for a refund of my initial month in advance, etc. I just wanted out.

The threatening emails from their billing company, ABC financial, have started with a bill over $100 now. I filed a complaint with the BBB, we'll see how far I have to go.

There has to be a better gym elsewhere, these are not honest people. Avoid this place.

Update *** Tuesday 9-24-19. I received an email from Retro finally canceling my membership with nothing further owed, as well as a follow-up email from the BBB with the same response from Retro.
They apparently lost my medical note and I faxed them a duplicate at the owners wife/business partner's request. Props to Melanie, an employee who helped me get a resolution and avoid any further escalation. Added a 2nd star for cooler heads prevailing.

I love the flexibility of the hours available to workout. The gym is usually buzzing with members and the staff is always there to help with anything. Personal training is great at my location and the trainers are all in. The equipment is usually in great working order and the locker rooms are in good shape. I’ve watched the ownership invest in the facility with construction updates as well as technology updates. I am a longtime member and see it continuing as long as I’m healthy and able to keep on going!

Ive been a member of retro for years, but I only just started going to this one because of the location.
I even used to be a floor tech at a different retro.
This gym is alright, except the employees really arent much help. I hurt my finger sliding a weight onto a rack without a stopper. My finger got clamped between the frame and the plate. Usually theres a rubber stopper to prevent this from happening. So i told the staff as soon as it happened to let them know their equipment needed servicing. They seemed to not really care. The kid told me "the stopper is probably on the floor", which it was not. Now about 3 weeks later, nothing has been fixed. They seem to be pretty preoccupied conversing to themselves to take care of the gym and tend to guests.
Im not one to complain like this, however as a former retro employee, this is absolutely unacceptable. I wouldve been fired if I had done what he did to me.

When I signed up they told me I could cancel at any time, when I tried to they said I signed up for a year membership. So make sure you actually read that contract.

The crew is friendly and helpful, the place is kept clean, it's only twenty dollars a month, and it's within walking distance. If it wasn't for that fact that the men's room is frequently overflowing and unfortunately it's the fault of the patrons, but still. Otherwise I would give it five stars because do enjoy my workouts here.

Great gym in Bay Shore.
Clean well equipped and maintained facility.
Friendly and attentive staff.
Big selection of free weights and machines.
Membership is very affordable and requires no contract.
Intense work outs are not frowned upon.
Sorry, no pizza or bagels served here.
(Here's looking at you, so called "Judgement free zone" where they judge the heck out of you if you train heavy!)
Overall, I will highly recommended Retro Fitness Bay Shore.

They make you sign a contract for a 1 year and when you are finishing the year you want to cancel they tell you over the phone that you have to do 60 days before your last payment and when you go to the gym personally 60 days before your last payment they tell you can’t cancel until the last month !! They tell you things first and then change the version !! Terrible service!! I hope to solve my situation because I need to leave the country and I don’t want leave debts!

This retro fitness gym is great. I was former member at bay shore planet fitness where it felt like a prison not a gym with all t he stupid rules. I was forced to jump rope outside in the elements, rediculous. Retro is the exact opposite, they actually allow and have jump ropes!! Friendly staff, good equipment and clean. Glad I made the switch to retro fitness.

Half of the treadmills don’t work
Today while one of the employees was vacuuming (in the middle of the day when the gym is crowded as always) they hit the plug on my treadmill which stopped it suddenly making me almost fall off it. Then the same employee continued to vacuum (with a huge extension cord trailing around the gym) around all the machines that members were trying to use

One horrible place of business. They conitnue to steal money from me constantly and i dont even use the gym. Canceled membership a long time ago. This place is extremely dirty and gross. Don't waste your money or time at this place.

Not sure what people are complaining about. Friendly Staff and Workout equipment is all that is needed. All the other services and rooms are just a bonus. For $20 a month you should stop being so picky . What do you expect someone to fan you off and feed you grapes while you workout? Its a Gym not a Spa. Its a business and needs to pay all the employees for upkeep on the place everyday so all of you cry babies don't complain or write bad reviews.that is why you have a contract. Go to another Gym on a Month to Month basis and see if you get a membership at $20 a month. Not happening. Not even close. Reason there is a year contract is so the place can make a few bucks. One downside of the internet is that the 99% of the customers that are happy don't go and write the reviews. They are too busy being happy.
