The syosset location is a little small but is well kept by the owner.The place is always clean and the machines are well maintained. Very rarely is a piece of equipment out of order for a long period of time. Another thing that is an enormous plus is the view out the huge windows. The staff is always friendly and tending to the customer requests. I have a Retro gym closer to my house, but I prefer to come to Syosset Retro.

This retro is really awesome, they keep the gym so clean with operating equipment. Family-owned franchise which is consistently the best and cleanest gym I've ever been to. The ladies who work here are by far the nicest and most helpful I've ever met. Most affordable and best bang-for-the-buck gym you'll ever find. The bathrooms are always clean and in proper working order as well as all the weights, machines, and all equipment. Beware, no free trial (prior to signing up) available at this location despite what the website and emails tell you!

I looked to trial Retro Fitness at this location prior to deciding to sign up. However, despite what the website says and subsequent emails urging you to come in after signing up online for their free day trial - only while visiting this location in person do they tell you that they are different from other locations and you must pay $10 for the day trial... (Definitely not a good first impression, thus I left to go see other gyms available in Syosset/nearby)

No issues with charging $10 for day passes, but their website / emails need to be updated to not give wrong info / waste people's times.

Zero maintenance. Equipment is broken for months at a time. When you ask about it, the kid at the front desk says they fix one machine at a Time. Inflation and Covid is the excuse for not charging cables on more than one machine at time if it happens at all. They do nothing preventative. He says the owner has to make a living. Just a terrible business practice. Time for me to find a new place to work out.

Do not gym here. Not just is it over crowded but this place will scam you once you try to end your membership. I attempted to do so in August 2021. Everything seemed to be fine and I thought all was good. The nice young lady usually at the desk informed me so.

I was foolish to not check my credit card summary in more detail. In December of 2021 I noticed the gym was still charging me! They could not help me over the phone and I had to go in and cancel it in person. These people made me sign a piece of paper so they could send it to corporate (which i later found out by a past employee is not actually sent to corporate). Because i was not told about this in August, they kept charging. When I asked for a refund, nobody returned my calls for weeks. The manager kept dodging me every single time i called. I am still waiting on a refund.

This place is a dump, I’d rather lose all my gains than every step foot inside Retro Fitness again.

Gym itself was always great. The facility was clean and the staff were always pleasant and helpful. The problem I has it with their customer service and cancellation policies. I have gotten the run around for literally years. Certified letter, in person, over phone, blah blah blah. I have been told about a half dozen ways I have to successfully cancel . There is literally never a manager available, at least none of the 50 times I have called. I half left my number, I have left my email and expressly requested a call back. The literally only reasonable human I have gotten on the phone is a person named Nikko, Nicco, Niko I dont know how to spell it but he is the legit first people with half a brain that I have gotten on the phone. I love the gym itself but I haven't lived on long island for years and haven't been in Syosset area for probably 6 years. This place just gives you the run around endlessly.

At 67 I decided to get fit. My main concern was that I would feel uncomfortable and out of place. Much to my surprise the owner and staff made me feel comfortable. They answered my questions about equipment and told me how to proceed. They had customers that spanned the the fitness spectrum which helped a lot. 5 years later at 73, I’m down 40lbs and feel great. Blood sugar (A1C) is now 6. My diet was always healthy, exercise was the key. This gym was perfect for me and I can’t say enough about it.

I love the variety of machines. For someone who can have reoccurring shoulder or knee injuries, it's nice that I can workout my body safely and progressively increase weight, without worrying about bad form taking over to compensate an injury prone area.

The website says you can cancel with 7 days notice. The "manager" requires 60 days notice, during a pandemic. Furthermore, instead of taking the cancelation in writing in person like the website says, you have to mail it to the club, so the "manager" you already spoke to may scan and process it... The same manager that refuses to take the paper in person. They put you through hoops no club would make you do.

I have moved out of state and I did my job as an organized member by reaching out 2 months before my out of state move. How can I contact a club when we had a pandemic and the club is shut down with no person of contact? Then, you call ABC Financial and they say sorry I cannot help you, because you need to contact the club. Very puzzling and asinine, and I am a person who has worked in fitness clubs in the past and have experience in this industry. So I finally call the club again today since the fitness clubs were approved to be reopened in August by the Governor of NY and they tell me that I need to pay a cancellation fee of 40 dollars for myself and my fiancee. Good riddance. I will be filing a report with the BBB and contact my merchant services to deny your charges since I tried to reach out and do my job correctly, and to no avail no help was provided to help with proper and sufficient customer service!

If it is ran by the same people who ran/owned the place in 2017 than it’s an amazing gym. Mother and her daughters who own were always on site and I was genuinely happy to see them when I walked in. The gym was always clean and the high ceilings and large fans made a super comfortable workout. Lastly, the WiFi was always on point and never had to deal with a poor signal dropping my music and interrupting my run.

I like the fact that this Retro facility is spacious, clean and well-equipped. The temperature is always right and the music is usually to my liking. It's also never too crowded so I get to structure my workout routine without waiting. The staff and ownership are friendly and always eager to help with any questions. Very nice gym! I have been working out here almost 3 years. This is a well kept and clean gym. Employees are well trained, and polite. So many treadmills, and all of them come with a TV screen. I love the treadmill movie theater, and watched many good movies while working out. This place completely re-energizes me after a good workout.

I am pretty disappointed with Retro Fitness of Syosset. I have called and left numerous messages and call back request for managers. I have yet to receive a single call from any of the staff. I moved and have tried to cancel several times and get simply some merky diluted instructions on cancellations and how it take 3 plus months to process the cancellation and your liable for the membership fees during that time. Its generally pretty disappointing that a place would hold you hostage like this, not allowing you to cancel in person, not returning your calls etc. I think the management and ownership at this facility are thieves and have trained their minions to avoid cancellations at all cost. I would never go back there based on principal. The gym is pretty decent, the facilities are pretty clean but their customer service is pathetic at best.

RETRO FITNESS ARE CROOKS. Signed up for one summer after our son died to relieve stress. Never signed up for a year membership but when we tried to cancel after moving several months later, they wouldn't let us. Called multiple times and emailed. Only rude responses or ignoring. Got a letter from collections today, 6 months after sending another letter of cancellation, and two years after this process. Have reported to the NYS Attorney General and Division of Consumer Affairs. STAY AWAY!!!

A simple issue with membership still hasn’t been resolved after four phone calls. Each time, the employee, who is polite, says that the manager will call back. This employee has also told me twice that she will call back and she promises. No call from manager nor employee. This place either has poor management or clever management that trains employees to fend off members by saying that the manager will call back or they will look into the issue.

The owners are like my family. They make it a point to know your name,learn your drink order and make you feel at home.
All the equipment is mint and if anything is broken it is fixed immediately.
The staff cleans all the machines by hand every night, the floors are washed and vacuumed every night and all weights etc are put back where they belong a few times during my workout.
I’ve been going to retro Syosset for 2 years now and have lost 60+lbs in my time there. I chalk up my success of weightloss and love for working out to my family and friends at Retro Fitness Syosset.

I've been a member for 8 mos. I've not had the use of space issues described by other reviewers. The equipment is quite adequate for my use and the staff and owner are quite approachable and appreciate suggestions for improvement. The facilities are well maintained, especially of late.
I do wish they offered more classes in the morning, particularly yoga and core.

Circumstances have changed.

Currently, this facility is not kept up as well as it could or should be.

The locker room is not kept up and neither are the bathrroom/shower areas.

Staff do not maintain soap containers or toilet paper, there's mold growing in the showers, and these areas are evidently not cleaned daily. One of 2 toilets is constantly out of service, most recently for 2 weeks.

Class schedules have dropped to just a few.

Other Retros I've visited offer many more classes.

I rarely see the owner any more. A recent email sent to the owner went unreturned.
And you can't get through to Corporate either.

My current mood is I have one foot out the door. Considering alternatives.

The owner has had the opportunity to maintain a nice facility, which they acquired 2 yrs ago.

I came here with a free pass that I got it online. I came at 7am. It was almost empty but I had great exerscice. There are plenty of space and machines. If I live close by I would open a membership here but I live in different city. Thanks for the free pass.

Hi There Retro Fitness!

I really enjoyed being a "month-to-month" "no commitment" customer at your location for the last year and a half and really liked the place and the staff. I never complained about the showers being broken half the time or the dirty toilets or lack of paper towels. Unfortunately, I have to move out of state so I came here and asked to cancel my membership just to find out that not only you require a 2-months notice but you only accept cancellation requests via CERTIFIED MAIL.

So... I hope that people will read my review and decide to sign up to a different place with no hidden traps for canceling your so called month-to-month no commitment membership and eventually it'll make you change this policy or go out of business like all the other businesses that thinks it's ok to treat their customers this way.

I also posted it on Facebook but I'm pretty sure they'll delete or hide it so I'm posting on Google and YELP just to make sure other people will know about it before they make the mistake of signing up. You may get an extra $40 in your pocket but this review will always be there letting people know how you treat customers.

This franchise is under new (and very competent) ownership as of 9/15 and gym is kept impeccably clean with an excellent staff is being put in place. Ignore reviews as to space. It is extremely light airy and spacious.
As to fees, all gyms have additional fees other than those advertised, just like any club.
There are always enrollment, processing fees, etc. It is a GREAT alternative to some of the pricier gyms in the area, particularly for adults who prefer a gym setting where there are not a lot of teens running around.

Not a great use of space. I really hate the Retro's that open up following the minimum sq. ft. requirement for their franchise. I couldn't drink water because no one can pass, there is literally no space between the fountain and an exercise machine. The machines are all on top of eachother, and the managers say nothing to so many members that put their bottles, shirts, and gym bags on equipment they're not even using. No etiquette. Bad idea going here after work because it's close. The Retro's in Bklyn are so much better. I'd rather get up an hour earlier and go to Bk before heading out to work. At least there'll be room and gym etiquette there.
