Gym smells horrible, incredibly packed, and non-friendly environment. The workers are extremely friendly but the members are disrespectful. I’ve gone across the Bergen county area visiting several gyms, this by far is the worst experience I’ve had.

Facility in Tappan NY is excellent. Plenty of machines in addition to kettles, bands and other cross fit equipment. Plenty of cardio machines that are clean and operational. Downstairs has everything you could possibly want. Boxing area, more cardio machines and free weights. Showers are OK. They are pretty clean. Always has soap loaded. Lockers are a bit narrow, but fine. Great gym.

The team and leadership at the Tappan Club are customer service–focused, knowledgeable, and genuinely friendly. I’ve had recurring issues with Retro Fitness corporate regarding how they process members with an Ultimate Membership. Maddie (spelling?) has been absolutely wonderful — not only in diffusing my frustration but also in creating a workaround to ensure I’m not humiliated each time I’m wrongfully flagged for using the privileges my membership includes. If it weren’t for the positive customer experience Maddie and her staff provide, I’d probably be a Planet Fitness member by now.

I canceled my Retro Fitness membership on September 19, 2025, but ABC Fitness keeps billing me and sending “chargeback” notices.
Even after showing proof and the signed cancellation form, they just told me to “contact the club.”
They are the billing company, yet take no responsibility for their own charges.

Matty and her staff are AWESOME. Always a friendly greeting when you arrive and a "Have a great day!" when you leave. The equipment is always being updated. If by chance which is extremely rare that there is an "Out of Order" sign on a machine that machine is most likely repaired by my next visit to Tappan Retro. (Unless parts have to ordered of course.)
It is the cleanest gym I have ever worked out at from the heaviest dumbbells to the comfy yoga mats. You can find Wet Germ Killing Towels and dry paper towels in every possible location of the gym. There is cardio equipment on all three levels of the gym.
The Mens Locker is everything a gym locker room should be. Lock Room doors are always closed and lockers cleaned. The showers are always stocked with plenty of soap and there is a blow dryer available so you don't have to bring one from home.
There are supplements galore and the shakes are to die for. There is something for everybody. Thanks Tappan Retro for being one of the best parts of my day!

This place is really good and very affordable and the student membership is the best for me because it is 100 dollars per 3 months meaning u would just have to put aside 33 dollars a month for it. I just wish the lockers would be cleaned a bit more and the music to be a bit more serious since during my workout I im on that last rep then I hear some cringy ah music play and it gets me off guard. I also would prefer a bike rack of some sort because not everybody that comes here has a car. Honestly I prefer this gym over impact because there arent any machine hoggers like impact and its less imtimidating because of all those sarm goblins at impact. The workers here are also very nice and not so strict like impact. I hope the gym playlist changes soon 🙏

I love the community experience of the classes at Retro Fitness. The classes are the primary reason I have a membership. A good mix of different types of classes from strength to Zumba, boxing, interval training, etc. The instructors are great and help show modifications to many of the more difficult moves.

This gym is one of the cleanest in the area. Owner continuously updates the gym and has the gym cleaned. Staff and members are always very friendly and I’m always greeted with a friendly hello. I've been a member here for almost 10 years now, I love this Retro and trying to find another gym that fits my morning commute better has been rough because every other Retro is usually smaller, weird lay out, tiny locker rooms - im a little picky.

I love the size of this gym, the levels, the many many options for machines, the smoothies, the cardio theater - all great.

Last year I had to cancel my membership for a little while for financial reasons, I wish they told me that if I rejoined I would have to pay a higher monthly cost because they changed their rates. No biggie, I rejoined.

They've made some nice changes!
Pros / Cons:
Locker room has nicer floors and its pretty big / the shower heads are awful, there isn't a spot to place your bag outside of the shower, you have to either put it on the floor or travel nakie to your locker and lots of HS girls like snapping pics in the mirror so... pass.

They added Beautiful new treadmills / just only in the front, hoping they change the rest 🙏🏻

Their smoothies are delish / they only offer one size ?

So many machines / many of them are either often broken or falling apart probably because they're used so much, hoping they get new machines 🙏🏻

Love the atmosphere / they only play classic rock.... every other Retro I've gone to plays upbeat, fun, dance music - when my headphones die here, I die a little bit too 😫

Overall love this gym, a few things annoy the heck out of me but hey it can't all be perfect, but it could be perfect for you!

I was a member at this gym for the last 6 years since I would always work out here after work. Only reason I've cancelled my membership is because my company I work at that's next town over relocated and there's no close Retro Fitness where I currently live. And I also had no issue with cancelling my membership knowing you pay for an extra month. This place is pretty clean and has plenty of cardio and strength equipment and they are pretty well maintained. The staff are friendly and helpful as well. The crowds are the same for any other gym you go to, best time to work out is non-peak hours. The vibe of this Retro is pretty friendly. About majority of people have gym etiquettes where they re-rack and clean and wipe down after themselves.

After my gym closed in Bergen County, I was in flux as to where I should go next. I lucked out with Retro Gym in Tappan, NY, discovering the excellent teacher Angela. She is a gem.
The enthusiasm for instructing her students makes my struggle with exercise only a faint memory. An hour with Angela flies by with her cute quips, variety of classes, alternative routines for those with injuries (eliminating frustration and further damage one could subject themselves to) comradery with her students, knowledge of anatomy to correct improper form when instructing, generosity with her after class time should questions from students pop up, and her overall commitment in what she does.
Even Retro's general manager Jackie Zysman, and the owners go the extra mile for their Pearl River and Tappan Retro population.

This gym does not value our honor their word on billing, called before the annual membership fee to cancel when they opened due to being affected by Covid and the manager Maddie paid no mind to what I had to say or my situation even after I left her know I had called a month ago to cancel but was still charged 80 dollars she was rude on the phone and did not even breathe while speaking to let me get in a word, wake up and understand your consumers.. especially at this time of a global crisis.. Not everyone has money to disregard your error in communication...I advise everyone to make sure you keep track of your billing of you choose this location and remember there had been many times this gym didn't even have water and you weren't notified till you got to the door with a sign so forget after gym showers on those days.. That happened alot at this location
