About the Club

SlowBurn Personal Training. Just 30 Minutes a Week. Exercise For Smart People. Just Like You!
SlowBurn is a form of strengthening exercise that uses very slow, smooth, and controlled lifting and lowering movements, rather than the typical high force, explosive lifting seen in most gyms and training studios.

It is very similar to the way the gentle yet powerful martial art Tai Chi is performed. There are no sudden, explosive or highly abrupt movements that can potentially cause injury. Every exercise is performed in a controlled and focused fashion. Research indicates that this method produces equal to and greater benefits than traditional lifting methods.

Every session at SlowBurn leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment. Fred and his staff are conscientious and supportive. My last bone density test showed a stable result after 3 years.. not a small feat for a 75 year old. I am glad my daughter introduced me to this personal training. I highly recommend SlowBurn

I can't say enough great things about Fred Hahn and SlowBurn training. I've known Fred for over 20 years and he's seen me through many stages of my health, and fitness needs. From my "wedding fit" days, to my postpartum "get back in shape" era, to my mature women "stay healthy" phase. With proper diet and a half-hour a week weight training at SlowBurn Studio, I've been able to stay fit, and feel great.
The gym is quiet, clean and NEVER crowded.
A true personal fitness experience!

I've been going since 2007 and I appreciate the one-on-one strength training that I would not do if I were just going to a regular gym. I'm 76 and over the first few years I lost 25 pounds that I had accumulated in my mid-life, and combined with my walking over this great city, I feel much more energized. I plan to keep doing this until you know when....

I have been training at Serious Strength for 15 years, because it works better and is easier to stick with than anything else. The gym is always scrupulously clean and cool, and the trainers always make the most of my time. It sounds too good to be true: 30 minutes, no need to shower afterward, and you get noticeably stronger and leaner. But it is ALL true. It's a tough 30 minutes, make no mistake. But if you are serious about the gym, Serious Strength is it.

Update 9/6/22: Now it’s renamed SlowBurn, and I am still at it, almost 24 years. Do I look like a body builder? Nope, I don’t have those genes (and certainly won't take steroids). Can I do active (biking, hiking) trips without training for months? Oh yeah, and hoist my own luggage overhead or up the broken escalator without breaking a sweat. I buy new clothes because I wear them out, or because I just want them, not because I change sizes. It’s very much worth it!

Update 9/5/24: Now I am eligible for senior discounts, but still doing Slow Burn twice a week. Habits are powerful forces in our lives, and I am grateful this is one was so easy to get into, and easy to keep. I am still playing singles tennis, going on (not e-)bike trips, hiking, kayaking, skiing. Compared to 16 years ago (my first InBody test) I've gained almost 4 pounds of skeletal muscle mass, and my body fat percentage is 3.5 percentage points lower. Harder to quantify is the sharper mental focus and steadier emotional keel I think come from pumping iron (safely!) - or maybe that's just a side effect of sleeping better, which also comes with pumping iron.

I had always exercised, I run, but never actually did any strength training. I felt something was lacking and I wanted to improve my running performance, so eight years ago at age 60, I started training at SlowBurn. Working with Rosanne and Tommy helped me reach the finish line for 7 of my last 9 marathons and #10 is now two months away and I'm still training and I'm stronger than ever! Being fit is the ultimate gift we should give ourselves. Thank you SlowBurn!

Returning to Fred Hahn and Slow Burn after 20 years to re-introduce my body to it's formal self. It's never to late to start and it's never too late to re-start. I began weight training over 60 years ago, with Vic Tanny, one of the first to create gym clubs using focused machines to build strength in targeted zones.

Rumor had it that 60 years ago Vic Tanny learned the key to lasting strength from Charles Atlas, a World Champion body builder for many years. Vic Tanny and then Jack Lalane became two successful chains that ignited the Fitness Industry.

For me, Slow-Burn has it's roots in what Charles Atlas would refer to "Dynamic Tension", referred to today as resistance training, working your body 30-60 second through muscle failure.

So for me, coming back to Slow-Burn is like re-introducing myself to myself just 60 years later. The good news is my body weight has been consistent and so my muscle tone is already responding after just 4 30-minute weekly sessions of Slow-Burn.

While 2 of my stomach's 6-packs were lost in my 60 year hiatus from working out, I do see one more pack trying to emerge since re-starting with Fred's Slow-Burn technique. That's a good thing.

Slow-Burn is great for those of us who honor the value of indendepent workouts with a one-on-one model. My trainer is also amazing.

A happily satisfied continuing customer.

I'm not a big photo poster so please don't ask, but at 6ft. 2in., 180 lbs with 4-packs still visible and 5 pounds lighter than when I was 16 and playing football, I'm feeling good thanks to Slow-Burn.

Slow Burn in Montclair has been a life changer for me. I’ve worked with Tommy and Jake, two knowledgeable, encouraging and inspirational trainers, for 5 years. They keep me motivated to show up twice a week for a workout that, at age 77, allows me to feel stronger than I’ve felt in years! Thank you, Slow Burn!🔥

I have been going to slow burn for years and truly believe it is one of the very best workouts available. It is one of the safest and effective means to build lean muscle while protecting your joints . I have referred many patients and always get rave reviews . The bonus is the 20 minutes twice a week is perfect for my schedule.

SlowBurn has been nothing short of transformative for me. Having lifted weights for most of my life, I always believed that achieving results required countless hours in the gym with numerous reps and sets. However, the SlowBurn team has completely changed my perspective.

I now attend sessions just 1-2 times a week for 30 minutes, and I have never seen better results in terms of strength and muscle gains. The workouts are not easy, but they are incredibly efficient and worth every dollar spent. The knowledge and guidance provided by the SlowBurn team have been invaluable.

Highly recommended for anyone looking to maximize their fitness results in a time-efficient manner!

After trying countless workout plans that promised the world but fell short, this is the only program that truly worked for me. The results have been nothing short of amazing!

Nio and Fred are the best trainers you could ask for. They bring a perfect blend of expertise, motivation, and genuine care to every session. Their approach to fitness is all about quality over quantity, ensuring that every movement counts and that you're progressing safely and effectively.

The Slow Burn method has transformed my strength, endurance, and overall health in ways I never thought possible. It's more than just a workout—it's a sustainable lifestyle change. Highly recommend!

I couldn't be happier!! In just the couple of months I've been working with Fred (just one session per week!), I've already lost fat, gained muscle, and felt stronger and more confident. He is kind, gentle, and encouraging but also pushes me always to do my best and work my hardest. In addition, I'm a person who always gets injured when I exercise, but no longer! Fred is so careful and cautious in his training that I've never even felt a strain from my workouts. It's almost like physical therapy in many ways!

Re: COVID safety concerns: This gym is different than most gyms where you hire a personal trainer because at SlowBurn, you and your trainer are the only ones in the gym (vs being in a gyms with tons of people).

I highly recommend trying a session if you're ready for something new that works.

I have been training in slow burn at Fred’s studio for the past 4 years. Fred has created a scientific body building technique which is highly efficient, injury free, requiring no more than 30 minutes one or two times a week, allowing the body to both fatigue and recover according to its natural rhythm. The studio is kept spotlessly clean, the trainers follow Fred’s method meticulously and maintain a log of their client’s progress on each machine so it is clear how one is building strength over months and years.

I’ve trained with Fred for many years because his slow-burn program works. My weekly 30-minute training sessions have helped me remain in excellent physical shape as I’ve gotten older, an age-defying physicality that my friends often comment on. And I love the fact that at Serious Strength, failure (i.e. muscular fatigue) equals success (i.e. muscular improvement). It is the only thing I’ve ever done in my life where I’m focused on achieving consistent failure.

I have never much liked exercising before. Slow Burn is amazing. I have gotten stronger very quickly. The training is so absorbing that it is not in the least bit boring (a problem I have had with all other kinds of exercise programs). The trainers are great. I have been recommending Slow Burn to all my friends.

This is the best experience in my life exercising. While it is hard, it is not very long, so I can handle it. It is very efficient. For me, along with getting stronger, I also completely normalize my cholesterol. The studio is put together with love and everybody is just a delight. And it is perfect for our busy modern life. You can get in and out in your business day, you will not need to shower....on top of that, you will get lots of advice andvrespurces on health, eating, well being. Go for it, guys.

I've been using Serious Strength for years. As a doctor in the neighborhood, I've tried many different gyms, trainers, and systems to stay in shape. Nothing compares to Serious Strength in terms of value vs. time spent, efficiency, and professionalism. I highly recommend this private gym if you are serious about fitness. It doesn't get any better.

Serious Strength fixed my lower back, made me strong, and put my on the path to lose 20 lbs and 2 inches off my waist. I've been going twice a week, for 30 minutes each session. And I can work out there in street clothes.

I met Fred in the summer of 2010 and got a copy of his book, which introduced me to the Slow Burn protocol. At the risk of waxing hyperbolic, the strength training has changed my life. I'm stronger today (and I feel better) at age 38 than I was when I rowed crew at age 18. My success on SB has made me an evangelist for the cause. Plus, Fred's a great guy, and he's deeply knowledgable about diet and exercise science. If you do one thing for yourself this year, start training using Fred's methods. You'll be glad you did.

I have been a client for several years and their philosophy and staff are superb. I have had several medical issues and injuries which would have been worse had I not been training at Serious Strength. In addition, it is the client's health and well being that is most important to Fred and his super staff. I cannot recommend them more highly.

I was a customer there for several years around the turn of the century, and returned when I moved back to NYC. Working out intensely (to the point, sometimes, of being unable to walk for a few minutes afterwards, I was that wiped out) lead to me having the best blood test numbers of my life, despite still having more fat than I'd like. (And the fat is decreasing, too.)

Workouts are up to twice a week, for a half hour each time; that's all that's required.

I've been doing super-slow HIT (High Intensity Training) for the past 20 years and at 60 I am injury-free, stronger and leaner than when I was 30. I had read Fred Hahn's book, and on a recent trip to NYC booked in for a workout. I thought I was an expert but Fred and his team take training to a higher level, with equipment even upgraded to better match the human strength curve and loads of nuances in the way they program clients. I really felt the difference and especially confident that I was in good hands. Finally, it's obvious that they go the extra mile in integrating effective nutritional advice with great training advice = better results with less time in the gym. It's also small which I like, as you get the attention you need and feel at home. This is not the gym for those wanting to go do their own thing. Fred would not allow that. It's for people who want a great training outcome from cutting edge training delivered by trainers who understand quality training.
