I've been a ninja at the Hells Kitchen location for over a decade and this place has truly changed my life for the better. Speakeasy is more than a gym, it's a community of support in the middle of NYC - for my health and wellbeing and my spirit. It's a place everybody knows my name and genuinely cares about me! It's a fun, playfu and silly environment with very serious technique and fitness happening. I LOVE IT HERE!

I've belonged to a wide variety of gyms over the years, and I've liked many of them. But I can say hands-down that Speakeasy is the first that I have absolutely LOVED. It is, hands down, my favorite place I've ever worked out. The programming is incredibly smart, creative, and fun -- as a health care provider I am genuinely impressed with how much obvious education, understanding of the human body, and thought and care goes into them. They are challenging but you never leave them wanting to die. This is not a balls-to-the-wall machismo kind of workout...its one that is nurturing and playful even as it is effective and strengthening.
The coaches are phenomenal -- attentive, encouraging, and great at cueing and feedback. Though I'm someone who has always loved movement, I do have some old injuries that limit my mobility in certain movements, and the coaches have engaged in helping me come up with alternative movements with curiosity and creativity. You can just tell how much they care about their members. Steve and the entire staff solicit, listen, and respond to concerns and suggestions well beyond anything I've ever experienced. They are also inclusive, welcoming, and supportive from the jump. I have never felt any judgment or inadequacy whatsoever -- which is a rare feeling for me because despite loving to work out I'm not exactly a gym bro! It's so rare to feel so genuinely invested in by a gym, but I feel it here. And I think everyone does. That inclusivity, support, and care radiate through the entire community because Steve and the coaches cultivate it among the members too.
All in all, this is a gem of a gym. Good workouts, good people. Highly recommended.

I've only been going for two weeks, and I already love it. The workouts strike the perfect balance between challenging and fun, and the coaches are incredibly knowledgeable and encouraging. They do an amazing job of creating a welcoming, community-focused atmosphere. It feels great to invest in my health while supporting a small business that truly cares about the neighborhood.

I was a member of this gym for a little over a year, before I moved out of the area. It's been almost a year since then, and I still think about it and miss it almost daily. Go here now, you will not regret it.

I recently moved to the area and was searching for a gym when I stumbled upon Speakeasy of Strength -- boy am I happy I did! I've always loved movement, but strength training in particular has always scared me and felt very unapproachable. I love that Speakeasy is not only an effective workout, but built on the idea of making strength training inclusive and for everyone. In addition to the inclusivity which initially caught my eye, over the past few weeks I've been incredibly impressed by the warm and knowledgeable coaching staff, pristine studio with fab mood lighting, and solid music choices (it makes a difference!). I think what makes Speakeasy so special to me is that beyond getting a killer workout, the staff takes pride in curating a very special community. Speakeasy has been an amazing addition to my routine and I'm grateful to be part of this funky little workout space with a group of awesome folks!

My body has changed in best way over the course of the four months I've been a member here! I was always a long distance runner and I never did much weight lifting before, or had much experience with kettlebells. After dealing with a long term foot injury, I realized I needed to try something else. I am so glad I found this place, and so grateful for the coaches and the community that they foster. You do NOT need to be "in shape" or have any experience with weight lifting, the coaches are the best guides and will help you along the way. I have become so much stronger, and with patience, by month three, my body really began to transform. It's worth every penny. The thoughtful way they program each session and strength circuit is not something you can find just anywhere. The max amount of people per session is six, and you get one on one adjustments and help going up in weights, etc. Cannot recommend Speakeasy enough!

Speakeasy of Strength is amazing! The small group sessions feel super personal, I get so much attention and support. As someone totally new to weight-training, I’ve felt welcomed, encouraged, and never out of place. The coaches are friendly, inclusive, and great at teaching proper form so I don't hurt myself. The gym is super clean (no gym smell!), the music is always on point, and the whole vibe is just awesome. I truly enjoy weight training here and strongly recommend to anyone looking to add weight training as part of their workout routine.

I've been a Speakeasy member for over 4 months now and I wanted to share my journey thus far. This is such a unique workout experience and environment that's particularly welcoming to people who are intimidated by gyms or the idea of working out. Up until I started here, I hadn't really worked out since high school. But after a tough year, I decided I needed a reason to get out of the house, move my body and access natural endorphins to help get myself out of a rut. The team at Speakeasy got that 100%. They validated that need and actually reassured me that I was not alone in that goal. In fact many of their members are people like me—fitness dabblers—who are just trying to do right by their aging bodies. And I've found that to be absolutely true. I have never gone to a class and felt out of place as someone who isn't in the best shape. Don't let the "hardcore" decorative aesthetic fool you, this isn't a gym filled with people whose entire personality is getting ripped. Nobody—not even the trainers—have that vibe.
This small group personal training model is wonderful for people who have a lot of "body quirks" from injuries and aging. Every class is limited to 6 people and guided by a trainer who is monitoring your form, and offering live modifications to the workouts based on your needs. Unlike other gym classes where I often felt embarrassed when I need to slow down or do an exercise to a lesser intensity, at Speakeasy everyone is running their own race. Zero judgement. Trainers demonstrate the exercises at every class (even if they've demo'd them before) and make sure to allow time for questions and setup if someone needs to make an adjustment. They also emphatically encourage everyone to meet their body where it's at that day, which I love.
I feel welcome at this gym. I feel safe at this gym. I feel seen at this gym. I feel a sense of community at this gym. Probably most importantly, I feel stronger physically and mentally because I joined this gym. This is the first workout type thing that I've been able to keep up with because I genuinely enjoy it. I'm excited to continue my fitness journey at my own pace and keep on getting to know and contribute to the Speakeasy community.

Hands down the best gym in Brooklyn (and maybe even all of NYC)
There's nowhere like it. It's an immediately warm place with heart, soul, and more knowledge and wisdom about how our bodies work than anywhere else I've trained (and I've been in game for a while).

Review update December 2024! I've now been going to Speakeasy for about 2.5 years and love it just as much as when I first started going. In addition to getting stronger, I noticed that some irritating chronic issues in my body have gone away by strength training. I haven't felt the need to go to the chiropractor in a year, my posture is better and shoulder and hip irritation are gone. Clearly these issues were being caused by muscle weakness and I just didn't know it. I wasn't expecting these issues to clear up from strength training but am so grateful that they did! In addition, Steve the owner is truly a community minded guy. He's generous and kind and has created a great place (all of the coaches are wonderful). Can say I still recommend Speakeasy 10/10 two and a half years later!
I joined Speakeasy in early April 2022, looking for my version of the perfect strength training class and thankfully for me, I found it! Their classes are the perfect amount of time and use various tools for moves (kettlebells, trx, clubs and bodyweight), have minimal cardio and no more than 5-6 people in group size which allows for plenty of attention/form correction if needed. Classes are challenging but NEVER feel like torture, I always enjoy them which has not always been the case in other studios' classes. They change their programming up every few weeks and each program targets the full body. I have been consistently going twice a week and am slowly but surely regaining my strength after quite a bit of time off from working out. I've still got plenty of room to grow but I'm on the right path. All of the coaches I've met are truly lovely and the vibe is great -- they have a real community feel. Love Speakeasy, so glad I found it and I truly recommend it 10/10!

Been coming here for over two years and can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s a great community welcoming to all regardless of strength training history, the coaches are all great at explaining the current routines and offering variations, the music and decor is great. I’ve seen a marked improvement in my own strength and stamina since joining. Thank you Steve and the speakeasy crew!

I've been a Speakeasy of Strength gym member for over three months and have loved my experience. Even after just a few weeks, I felt noticeably stronger. I'm a runner in my 40s with an office job and have had lower back tightness (/pain, at times) for the past few years. Since joining Speakeasy of Strength, that tightness/pain has definitely lessened.
I also love the culture and atmosphere that Speakeasy of Strength fosters -- it's inclusive, approachable, and non-competitive. The staff is very knowledgeable and supportive, and small class sizes mean you get individual attention when you need extra guidance.

I grew up with a mild disability, scared of the gym and the judgement of people in it. Then some friends told me about Speakeasy; they promised it was warm, inclusive — and fun. And despite my skepticism, they could not been more right.
Speakeasy has made me physically stronger, sure. But just as important, in a few short months, the team there has made me see myself differently — think about myself differently. They have given me the confidence to feel at home inside a gym, and also the confidence to walk a little taller each day in this crazy city.
I happily travel 45 minutes to attend sessions. And that’s saying something. Because I don’t happily travel 45 minutes to do anything.

This gym is more than a place to sweat, it’s a supportive but non-culty community where you can feel accepted and empowered to work towards being your best physically and mentally.
The trainers are not only knowledgeable but genuinely care about your progress, tailoring workouts to your needs and goals—pushing you when you need it and cheering you on when you’re struggling.
The place is small but always clean, the music is a vibe, and the members are fun. People are joining (and staying) with all types of backgrounds from former strength trainers to people who have never made working out a thing. It’s a warm and welcoming place that you won’t feel anxious or dread going to. I’m so happy to have found this place, it’s worth every penny.

I am a Speakeasy of Strength convert. I have never been happy or consistent about working out until I joined this gym. Too often have I messed up my back or shoulder or neck or knee, only to stop training for weeks at a time. No longer. The small group clases are very well crafted and the instructors make sure your technique is on point for each set of exercises. There is no pressure to over do it while there’s a very BIG focus on building up strength gradually without injury.
The most significant change for me is that I came in with a lot of upper back/neck pain and after 3 months of working with the crew at Speakeasy, my spine and neck is so much stronger and I’m not throwing out my back every time I pick up a bag of groceries. I feel so much stronger in every way. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Love this place! Like many, I’m usually a gym-shy person, but Speakeasy is so approachable and fun! Each of the coaches is lovely and super knowledgeable, and I have yet to leave a class where I don’t feel exhausted (ha), supported, proud of myself, and amused by the number of Keanu/Taylor Swift/Chappell/other pop culture references the coach managed to make. Also, it’s pretty cool to see those weights get bigger and bigger. : )

I am super impressed by the team Coach Fury has assembled at Speakeasy of Strength. As so many other reviewers mention, if you are considering joining a gym, you need to put Speakeasy at the top of your list. I have never stuck with a gym, but now I plan my weeks to ensure I never miss a session. I have enjoyed training with multiple coaches, including Coaches Chloe and Sam, but Chris has been my primary coach for almost a year. Chris is a gem. Passionate about fitness, adaptable to my limitations, and constantly thinking of new ways to challenge me. Couldn't be happier.

I was never a gym person or a person who worked out at all but Speakeasy of Strength provided such a welcoming and inclusive environment. I was really afraid to start my strength training journey (and it took weeks for me to sign up), but more than a year in, I'm so glad that I did and go twice a week. I really enjoy Coach Chris and Coach Chloe, they are friendly, sociable, and are able to provide modifications and answer my questions so I can successful complete a set. I also enjoy that every 4 weeks we change phases and a new routine is introduce. It really helps me to become confident and increase the various weights I use throughout the phase.

Looking for an affordable personal trainer to help assuage the perils of the aging process, I happened upon a listing for the Speakeasy of Strength. The idea of small group training was appealing, so I took advantage of their "sampler" option. The owner, Coach Fury, contacted me almost immediately and I went to my first session that night. Coach Chris was welcoming and attentive without being smothering, while also giving time to the other members. It didn't take long for me to realize I'd found a new home away from home. Over six months later, I've somehow become someone who works out three times a week IN THE MORNING and is deeply disappointed when I have to miss a workout. The coaches really listen and offer a variety of modifications so that the workouts work for everyone. The workouts change every four weeks and I really appreciate being able to work with different coaches. While there's consistency in teaching, each coach has their own unique way of demonstrating and explaining. Coach Chloe might fine tune the width of my stance for a deadlift, while Coach Sam might give me a tip about my grip on the bar, and Coach Maggie might see that I'm ready to add some weight. The correction they provide is gentle, supportive, and so appreciated. Good form not only helps me get stronger, but helps avoid injury. Do I look different after six months? Probably. But what I notice is how strong I feel. And it's full body strength, which will help me as I continue to age. I am so grateful to have found the Speakeasy. It's a welcoming place that truly feels judement-free. Thanks, Coach Fury!

Speakeasy of Strength is amazing. I am a movement teacher and was looking for a functional strength and kettlebell gym. The owner/head trainer is very up to date on healthy strength training and all the coaches have helped me hone my skills and get stronger while learning cool things about movement and the nervous system. It's a great gym for movement nerds but also gets you moving right from the get go ; they never loose you in over explaining. A very welcoming environment where you are also challenged and gently pushed to keep getting stronger. I come all the way here from bay ridge because I haven't found another place like it.

Can't say enough great things about this place. I look better, I feel better.
It's good to have some muscle and I'm no longer a lazy POS. It's because I go here.
Speakeasy of Strength classes give you the personal touch of a trainer at a fraction of personal training cost. They have plenty of timeslots and the classes are always small (6 people max). The workouts are made to fit anyone, with alternate exercises offered and on-the-fly adjustments when it's needed. The workouts are challenging and rewarding.
My favorite is how they're all cool coaches. They're not that gym trainer jock attitude but they still push you enough to see results.
They just opened a new space and it's great. I've been going there for 2 years. I'm not the super workout type but I can say I went from being unhealthy to feeling far better. Consequently, my sleep habits have improved, I drink less, and diet is healthier. That's a consequence of working out, you just want to do better.

Highly recommend for anyone of any experience or skill level! I’ve been going to the Speakeasy consistently for about a year and a half and have never felt so strong.
My first experience was when I was 6 months or so postpartum, and the coaches were wonderful at helping modify the exercises as I built back up my strength.
Now, I love going 1-2x a week and always feel good about making the time. Coaches are kind, fun, and experienced. Small group phase rotation allows you to both learn new things and get comfortable. I like the Zoom option for when I’m traveling.

I've gone up two weight tiers since I started and their group classes are the part of my fitness routine that have been the most consistent through the pandemic. Highly recommended!

I could not love this place more. I started coming because my back pain was waking me up at night, and I’ve stayed for 3 years. If I had known I could be this strong and fit, I would have done it years ago. The coaches are super knowledgeable and the vibe is fun—you push yourself as much as you want to each session, which means you go at a pace that is smart for you. If you’re not really a gym person but you want to be in shape and have fun doing it, this is the place for you.

Joined this gym about a month ago and absolutely love it! The coaches are incredibly supportive and I feel myself getting stronger with every class. I’m a plus size gal who has had a few not so welcoming experiences at other gyms so I would 100% recommend Speakeasy of Strength for anyone looking for somewhere inclusive and friendly.

Speakeasy is a special place. Steve (Coach Fury) Holiner has truly built a one-of-a-kind community for fitness: fun, welcoming, nerdy (if you want, don't have to), with of course fantastic training. I've worked out at other gyms, but most definitely feel that my technique and overall strength have improved in the few months that I've been a member. Also; fun!
Whether you're a veteran lifter, or just getting into a routine, I can't recommend highly enough.

Do you want to get stronger without the process of getting there feeling like a burden? Do you want to look forward to working out? Do you want a high five just for showing up to class? Then do I have the perfect place for you: the Speakeasy of Strength!!!
As someone who has had a love/hate relationship with fitness for as long as they can remember, my praise for the Speakeasy isn’t something I am giving out lightly. This is truly one of the most welcoming places I’ve had the pleasure of stepping foot inside of. Coach Fury and his crew instantly make you part of the family they have created and will put you to work immediately. For the novice to someone more experienced with strength training, you will find a program at the Speakeasy to fit your exact needs. It’s going to be tough, it may not always be pretty, but I promise you will see results and it will be FUN!
The Speakeasy has become a sanctuary for me as I recover from injuries — the crew take my healing seriously without ever sacrificing progress. I cannot recommend this wacky little Gowanus gym enough. Just like the Olive Garden, when you’re here, you’re family.

This little gym is a great place for strength training in small classes or one-on-one sessions. The coaches are all wonderful and super chill, and the atmosphere is very laid-back, plus very queer- and woman-friendly (no toxic gymrats to be found). Morning, lunchtime, evening and weekend sessions are convenient and all the pop culture festooning the walls gives it great character. If you normally hate gyms, this is the place for you.

Are you looking for a supportive, inclusive, and incredibly fun gym? Look no further! Fury and the crew are all amazing and compassionate coaches that flex and tailor their programs to meet you where you are. Classes are small enough that everyone who participates will receive individualized coaching and cues. If you wanna get your sweat on, or if you want access to huge variety kettlebells and expert coaching, this is the place for you.

Fantastic small group class gym. No judgements combined with serious equipment. From the complete novice to the competitive athlete, Coach Fury and the team seem to have your bases covered. You can come and expect to work with body weight, Indian clubs, kettlebells, and sandbags. I went there for a weekend fitness certification and ended up signing up for private coaching. It’s genuinely obvious how much Coach Fury cares about fitness, health, and getting his clients to feel and live better. Shoutout to Coach Omarhi as well. You guys are awesome.
If you live in BK and want to get in shape in a supportive environment (and want someone to do all of the thinking/planning for you), this is your spot.

I attended a small group fitness class last week here for the first time and had a blast! It was challenging, but the trainer, Anna, kept it fun! She gave adjustments throughout, and she managed to give notes in a way that didn't make you feel like a dum dum (very important!). The gym was intimate but plenty spacious for the class size. It was clean and bright and colorful, and just an inviting place to be, considering how many heavy, sweat inducing objects were around.

If I could give Fury 10 stars I would. I met him in 2013 at my RKC and he had an immediate impact on my life. His teaching style resonated deeply with me. He is real, no BS, honest and caring. I find that very refreshing in the fitness industry.Since then I’ve followed him to through DVRT Ultimate Sandbags as well as Original Strength. I think the biggest thing I’ve received from him is belief in myself. Time and time again he has shown me that my major limitation is my own beliefs. In April I signed on with him for a customized training program. His programming is specific, balanced, safe and purposefully incremental. He meets you where you are and progresses you brilliantly to where you want to be. I’m about to enter the last week of my second round of programming, and already excited to see what is next! My strength, muscle & technique are growing constantly. Online or in person, training with Fury is getting the absolute best of the best.

Speakeasy of Strength combines all the best things I love about a gym: quality movement, community, and fun! It's a small but mighty location with some of the best coaches around. The entire team holds a really high bar for movement quality, but everyone adds their own unique twist to keep it fresh and fun. Even during COVID-19, I've been doing online programming which has been a godsend, and makes me really grateful to be part of this community! If you want to have fun, move well, and stay healthy, Speakeasy of Strength is the place for you.

My fitness goals have shifted from aesthetics to focus on how my body moves in the world. Speakeasy of Strength's functional movement principles has help to correct some body imbalances and allows me to move with a greater sense of power. Though classes have moved online during the pandemic, the quality of instruction hasn't changed. All the coaches are knowledgeable, professional and hilarious. The location is super clean and this was before COVID-19. This is truly a gem in Brooklyn and I gladly drive the 35 minutes from home to get there.

This place is the best. I hate "big box" gyms, and this is the opposite - chill, friendly, supportive and full of down-to-earth people. The coaches are uniformly great and the members really feel like a community. Highly recommended if you enjoy strength and movement, but want to avoid the intimidating, macho vibes of most gyms.
Online small group training sessions during COVID-19 having been great too! I feel like I've barely missed a beat in my fitness and it's awesome to have a full schedule of sessions to rely on.

I’ve been training with Coach Fury for well over a year now. I’m usually a person who gets tired of working out at the same place after awhile, but Coach’s four week programs and mix of tools (kettlebells, sandbags, clubs, TRX, etc) keep everything super interesting. And when we don’t do an exercise for a while, it’s always fun to see it rotate back in, like an old friend. Now in my forties, I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and this strength really carries over into my other fitness interests and life. I get injured less, it’s way easier to haul my laundry and groceries, and I can absolutely crush a yoga class. What can I say? If this were a cult, I’d be happily indoctrinated. Luckily, it’s just a supportive, interesting, fun group of people getting strong as f#%$.

I was looking for a kettlebell gym in the Gowanus/Park Slope area, and have been going to Speakeasy of Strength about twice a week for the last 6 months. It's awesome. Coach Fury is very knowledgeable about kettlebell and sand bag exercises, and he has set a up a really inclusive and fun environment. The classes go in 4 week cycles that build on skills and intensity, so you'll learn new exercises every month. I feel so much stronger because of this place. If you've been considering it, try it!!

After taking more years off than i want to admit from working out, I was motivated to get back to it when Coach Fury opened the Speakeasy of Strength over the summer. His friendly demeanor was disarming and his commitment to strength building for healthy living was really appealing. I’ve surprised even myself with my enthusiasm for getting up for 630 am classes multiple times per week. I can’t believe how much I enjoy working out! And I’m seeing the results already - both in how I feel and how I look ;) the program is designed for each person to “run their own race” as Coach Fury always says. He’s super knowledgeable about the body and very cautious about form to avoid injuries. Give it a try!

Need a personal trainer? Great, Fury is the dude for you. Don't think you need a personal trainer but somewhat interested? Fantastic, Fury is the dude for you. Have a personal trainer and as you read this are saying 'I dunno, dude, I have someone I think I'm ok with...' well, let me tell you, Fury is definitely the dude for you and you should check him out.
My girlfriend introduced me to Coach Fury through her gym as I was looking to get into better shape and was curious to try a personal trainer. She had a hunch that Fury and I would hit it off, its more like we were twins separated at birth as we have very similar interests. We often nerd out while lifting heavy things, which I think for most is the goal of working with a personal trainer. His knowledge of physical fitness, weight training and overall health is extremely impressive, yet he always is able to state it in a way that I understand and can make work.
When we first met, Fury started with a very simple question, what do I want to achieve? My answer was simple, I'd like to bench over 215 and I'd like to grab my GF in mid-air the way Ryan Reynolds does in Deadpool. He said, 'I got it, and no worries.' Thus our training began with an emphasis on core strength training. Obviously your training regimen will vary with what your goals are, but he strives to make sure you are getting the most of every session. One thing I really like about training with Fury is his ability to make things relate-able and understandable. Fury knows I'm a Marvel fan and when helping me to refine my squats, he used an Iron Man reference to make sure I was understanding what I need to do. There's no complicated biology lessons here (though Fury does know his stuff if you happen to wax scientific), just solid training geared towards what works best for you.
In addition to private sessions, Fury runs a number of group classes and will be expanding soon to a huge studio, so there has never been a better time to try him out. Fury is awesome, and if I could throw in a 6th star here, I would. Definitely check him out! #dieMighty

I first met Coach Fury at a small group training facility in Manhattan. When he opened in Brooklyn, it was a no brainer to follow him there as that’s where I live.
The strength and movement small group training is the best for me as I’m completely lost in a gym on my own. Simply put, I need instruction. Fury is one of the best. I met him at Mark Fisher Fitness years ago and short-sightedly assumed we would not be a good match (I’m not a tattoo and loud music kind of guy.). Well thank goodness my prejudices didn’t stop me from trying a session with him, because I instantly fell in love, and Fury became one of my favorites. His knowledge and passion for fitness inspired me to try and succeed at all kinds of challenges with kettlebells, sandbags, weights, etc. As a class programmer, he helped up the game and encourage everyone to develop new skills and push themselves. Somehow he got me to even “like” bear crawls. That is magic.
Give him a try. You won’t regret it.
