Scammers! I’m livid I cancelled this membership for my minor son per their request to email and they did for several months then all of a sudden I get a collections letter. The manager is never there to talk to and now the phones are not working today. Now I am going to be the crazy mom because this business is being dishonorable and doing the right thing by its customers. I know I’m not the only person dealing with this madness to cancel a simple kid membership. Shame on you synergy!

They’re money hungry and will hawk you down for every last penny you have. My father was paying with his credit card for me to come here and he had to deactivate his card due to someone making unauthorized purchases. They were still charging me even tho the card on file was deactivated and sent me multiple letters with an astounding bill. They even sent a second one saying that they'd settle if I paid half. Not only that but the guy at the front said that my first month would be $10 even tho I was charged $20 and that all the other months would be $30 but in reality it’s $40 a month which is way overpriced for what the gym is. I cancelled 2 days before my reoccurring bill due to it being too expensive for the quality and I was told that it could take up to a week to cancel even though I was there in person. The cancellation went through 5 days later and I was still charged because the cancellation went through 3 days after the reoccurring bill so I basically paid $40 for 3 days of having a membership. And to top it all off they charged my card even after I cancelled. The guy at the front said that it had to have been someone else in their system with my card which is impossible because I only signed MYSELF up to the gym not anyone else. Avoid this place at all costs please.

This is a HORRIBLE GYM! During Covid and with many challenges in my life. I never used the gym once. NOT ONCE! I called many many times and assured the membership was cancelled. I went here for my 2 time and paid a day pass for the 2nd time. However the first time I went I was never informed about the free trial day pass. When I asked why it was never offered to me or mentioned they said nothing. I just think it’s unprofessional and lying to an extent. Is it a big deal… not really. However it is rather untruthful and not very integral of the company.

I went to this gym back in 2016-2017 and I see from recent reviews that their scam practices have continued since then. When trying to cancel my membership because I was moving, I was told that I could not do so unless I sent a physical mail stating my cancellation. I was not about to do all that so I just told my bank to just stop payments. Couple of years later I get a mail saying that they'd sue me for "over due fees". Alright bozos, good luck with that!

Terrible management. I paused my membership and eventually called to cancel they told me I needed a validated letter and coming in person wasn’t enough. Now after they charged me I called my credit card company to cancel it becuase I haven’t been in 7 months to that gym. And they canceld the charged… NOW TODAY they have DEBT COLLECTORS mailing me saying I owe $100. Regardless of the amount I don’t owe them a one by and it’s a absolute rip off and they will be hearing from me.

To Whom it May Concern.
I called Synergy Fitness in the beginning of November 2023 looking for a personal trainer. I am an almost 70 year old woman with osteoporosis and was told to do strength training to help mitigate my bone loss. I had no idea, at the time, how lucky I was to be hooked up with Michael!!!! I had never stuck with any type of exercise regime before and I was skeptical that I could make a real commitment to working out.
Michael totally and completely changed the way I feel about weight training. Not only does he pay exquisite attention to my form and ability but he has a keen sense of what I can achieve, often in spite of me.
I love coming to the gym, I even crave it, all because of Michael's enthusiasm for my progress. He has faith in me which has translated to me having faith in myself.
The day that I met Michael literally altered my life in ways that I can only interpret as divine intervention. Thank you thank you Michael!!!

Beware. They will not cancel your membership. They ask you to send a letter in to cancel which we did for two separate people. They “did not receive” either letter which was sent to the correct address as it was provided by them over the phone. For them to not receive one letter is understandable but two is just not realistic. They would not cancel over the phone and had to contact the credit card company.

Synergy is, truthfully, not that great of a gym. However, the staff, particularly the two young men, Josh and Dylan, make up for what the equipment and atmosphere lacks. They are kind, patient, and understanding. They make everyone feel welcome and supported, no matter if they're beginners or seasoned gym-goers. Those two truly make going to synergy worth it.

Please be careful when signing up to join this gym. I received a debt collection notice with fees. I contacted the gym and spoke to the manager who informed me that they were not able to withdraw my funds for quite some time. I told the manager that is how you handle a long-term member; no phone calls, no emails, go directly to debt collectors?The manager, Leo told me that they tried to contact me 20 times, which is not true, I have voicemail on both phones and there was not 1 message. If there was, I would have reacted promptly. I was also told they do not send emails. Really….I receive promotion emails from them all the time. I do not appreciate being lied to. I informed Leo that I want to make sure my account is cancelled after payment and asked for a letter in writing, he informed me “oh your account is cancelled” and we cannot send you a letter indicating so. Why? I also requested to speak to a higher level of management and was told he us the only one I can speak to. I have read other reviews here and it seems others have had similar experiences at this gym. They have lost a good customer. Shame on them.

No stars - I cancelled after not liking the way the head trainer spoke to me after many years of membership and sent a certified letter and received a return receipt. That was almost a year ago. Then they started charging my credit card and I disputed the charges. I thought it was over until they started charging my credit card again a few months ago - disputed again - and now received a dunning notice from a collection agency - I filed a claim with the Better Business Bureau as well as the NYS Attorney General. I will take Synergy and the collection agency to small claims court for the hours I have spent on this as well as any challenge to my credit rating. This is a sleazy business practice and the gym is no longer clean at all.

A reasonably priced membership has had me as a client for over 2 years. So I haven't used the many classes they offer I do Avail myself of the well-stocked facility with weight training treadmill elliptical and other gym equipment. Their personal trainers are friendly and helpful and also reasonably priced. Synergy is my local gym and I will continue using their facilities. I believe that synergy now honors and participates with the silver sneaker program

Beware of this gym and their horrible billing practices. I cancelled over a year ago exactly the way they told me to in my contract which was sending a signed letter by certified mail. I even called them multiple times to ask if they received my letter and if my account was closed and they said yes. Then they started billing me with a different charge than my original membership months later and would never fix the issue when I called so I disputed with my bank. They called me about "what I owe" and when I told them I cancelled, they said to email them proof, which I did, and they never replied. Now I've been sent to collections (which I of course disputed) because they cant do their jobs. They love to say in the replies that "it's outlined in the contract how to cancel" but even when you do it exactly as they say and get verification from the manager that your account is closed, they still screw you over. Also they love to say the reach out to people in these situations but they never make any actual attempt to fix any of these problems. They'll lie to get you off their back and send you to collections.

To start, I do not mind the gym or the facilities and did enjoy my time when I was actively going to the gym. This review is more so about the cancellation process and being wrongfully charged. I canceled my membership back in August and went through all their steps. I wrote a letter, signed it, and sent it by certified mail, and I even called after to make sure my membership was canceled and I was told it was. I wasn't charged in September so I thought everything was fine.... until I started getting charged again in October and now in November. When I called them about it in October, I was told that I would get a refund and that it wouldn't happen again but I didn't get the refund and had to dispute the charge with my bank. Now in November, I've been charged again and when I called on Sunday, I was told a manager would call me back to help me with this situation but it's been an entire week with no one calling me back to fix it. I called today and the phone said no one was available. I don't understand how you can follow all the steps to cancel and then randomly start getting charged again 2 months later. This is genuinely ridiculous.

Update: It is now march and I received a phone call from their collections. They said I owe them around 170 dollars. I told them I cancelled back in august and thank god I saved my letter and my bank statements showing I sent the Certified mail so that I can hopefully get this fixed but this would be a worse situation for people who don't save all that information. This place is ridiculous avoid at all costs. If you're someone currently thinking of closing your membership, save a picture of your certified letter receipt for the future so you have evidence if they continue to charge you like everyone else.

Update: They never fixed the issue, even after speaking to me on the phone and have now sent me to collections. I have full intent to sue if this isnt resolved. Dont go to this gym and avoid this hassle at all costs. 0/5 stars

Aerobics room has broken fans. One fan is missing. The other fan does not work properly. Only the person standing Directly under it gets air. Air conditioning is a must!!! I know 15 people who quit and joined a different gym and each week the classes get smaller. It is intolerable. The fans have been broken for WEEKS. Management does NOTHING regarding complaints. In the heat, we cannot breathe in that small, unventilated room. Also, the heat makes the floor sticky. I fell twice. ONE more week and if no improvement, the remaining group of us are gone!

Do not listen to a single review here with a 5 star because the owners or somebody must’ve paid for it. This gym makes it impossible to cancel your membership even AFTER you’ve already canceled them. They are sneaky and will scheme. They’ll let you know your membership is canceled and not charge you for some time and then one day you’ll get hit with a massive fee and they will claim you never canceled your membership and need a “hard copy proof” (knowing people don’t just keep this piece of paper around for years!!) This just happened to me. I don’t even live in merrick anymore. I have not been charged for over 2 years now and recently got charged with a $250 fee. This is ridiculous. Save your time and money!

The trainers are fantastic. Jon Castaldo is a great trainer and very helpful. However, despite how amazing the trainers are. Leo just decimates the ability to recommend this place. He is unhelpful and lazy. I’ve called at least ten times, emailed several times, and gone in person to get money refunded to me and Leo constantly has excuses. I was double charged for a gym membership one month and have yet to receive my money back from that one time. I put my cancellation in back in September and got charged 160 for my personal training in October. I followed their 30 days guidelines. And still got charged. I contacted Leo and the rest of the staff several times and have been getting the work around in an attempt to get my money back. Definitely avoid if you don’t want to charged after cancellation.

Once upon a time this was a very nice gym. Then during the pandemic they essentially cut the gym in half turning the huge back room into some sort of aerobics room. This resulted in them shoving ALL of their equipment up front which created overcrowding and many machines placed way too close together. In addition, all sorts of equipment couldn't fit up front and was gone. Many machines also started becoming more beat up and ripped up than ever before and it was no longer a nice place to work out at for me. The exterior of the gym is also falling apart, paint chipped off the walls, etc, and is just an unpleasant place to pull up to. Finally canceled my membership last week.

Like many of the reviews already said, cancelling a membership is made to be difficult. Personally, I had to physically write and mail a letter to an address stating that I wanted to cancel my membership. As for other gyms, like Crunch for example, you can cancel the membership in person just like what a normal gym would do.

A few members of the staff, as described by many others, are extremely unprofessional and dishonest. When I was injured and couldn't come to the gym for a month, they continued to bill me. The day I came back, I was immediately told that I owe over $100 in late fees, monthly payments, and a "membership fee." I was completely fine with paying it, which I did. However, the problem was when my parents came in personally to simply ask about the billing.

My parents just wanted to know what I being billed for and how to cancel a membership. Instead, a staff member proceeded to blame me for paying late. They also called me a liar for not telling them that I was under 18 when I first signed a membership. Even though, one of the very first questions they asked me was about my age to which I responded with my real birthday (it is also in their system). This clearly indicated that I was underage. Instead of addressing our concerns, the staff resorted to blaming us for even asking basic questions about the billing, including blatant deception.

This review is just to serve as a warning to anyone considering a long-term membership with this gym. If you ever decide to freeze your account or cancel the membership entirely, it will be a tedious process which will include constant billing in the meantime. Additionally, you'll have the pleasure of dealing with the staff. Please, do not waste the time or money. It is not worth it.

GREAT sauna, too bad it’s not a sauna. It’s a gym without AC or cool air—In July. Hot , no ventilation. Coming here over a year regularly , thought everyone was cool. I complain about the heat on 7-6-22. Suddenly the staffer doesn’t know me; won’t turn to his head to answer me. It’s hot as hell inside, tells me my girl has “menopause,” then returns to eating a pizza pie.

This place is Close to home , but not that inexpensive. The heat was awful, the attitude was the dealbreaker. Better deals all round this place.

Crunch is 19.95 a month, hopefully they don’t insult you and said they use the AC.

The gym itself is not bad. Pretty good overall for what you need. My biggest complain is their canceling policy. They make it nearly impossible to cancel your membership. Instead of being able to cancel at the gym (which makes most sense) they make you send a certified letter to some address. I did this and still got charged. Cancelled my membership with a certified letter (and received email confirmation my membership was cancelled) in 2020 and they continued to charge me for months and charged me the annual fee (even though I cancelled before it was time to pay it.) I felt bad bc the gym had to close during the pandemic, so I just paid what I “owed”. Then, started charging me again in 2021 as if I had never cancelled and sent me to collections and literally just got another phone call yesterday, 2 years later, that I owe money. I said absolutely not. Then they said it was a “mistake”, they are very shady and their collections company is as well. They are committing fraud. If you don't submit a written letter that you are canceling your membership to some absurd out-of-state address, they will send your bill to collections. As if people didn't have enough to deal with during COVID. In my experience, most gyms just let you cancel in person/over the phone/online.

Please do not give this gym your business. There are many unprofessional staff members here and the manager displayed some very dishonest dialogue. I tried to cancel my membership and the three months they continued to charge me for was sent to collections. I was a member for a long time but unfortunately the stress and angst I’ve felt from this gym outweighs anything positive I have ever felt. I was grateful to take my business elsewhere.

Unfortunately had to cancel my membership since my husband had a massive stroke and him and I could no longer attend synergy spoke to the manager when things 1st happened and I was told that my account would be canceled along with my sick husband. They continued to bill me. Went in and spoke to the manager explaining my homexplaining my horrible situation and I was told it would be taken care of. I'm now being sent to collections just went in to speak to the manager again and you're again and he told me if I keep insisting hes insisting then hes not gonna do anything for me. We'll never step foot in there again. Not compassionate. You don't threaten a member that you're not gonna do anything for them if they keep insisting that you've been in there and spoken to them multiple times about your account.

Great classes! All the instructors & trainers are excellent! However, the equipment is in poor repair - torn seats, rubber handles missing, rubber protectors missing from equipment bases. Duct tape all over the place. The manager, Leo, has no plans to get repairs done and is nasty when asked about it. Finally, the place lacks cleanliness.

Do yourself a favor a don’t ever go to this gym.
My husband open his account then he added me to his membership. After a year or so he requested the cancellation of the account which include me as well since I was added to his account and even the payment of his account was done with his card.
At one point they call me from the gym telling me I owe money and I was like how is that possible since my husband closed the account, my husband add me to his plan and I never open an account myself. Now I received a collection notification from a collection agency.
I called synergy to ask how is this even possible and the manager very rude yell at me and told me you have to deal with the collection agency.
It seems base in the reviews from other people that synergy has it reputation of sending bills to collection because they deliberately decide to not cancel membership when you make the request.

Picture this, the year is 2021, emails, phone calls, text messages, talking in person…. All valid ways to possibly cancel a gym membership? Nope! Not allowed! You must type up/write a letter, and send it by CERTIFIED MAIL to cancel what should be allowed to be done over a phone. Just another scam to keep people stuck in a cycle of paying for a gym membership you don’t use.

If I could give this gym 0 stars, I would. They discriminate heavily against pregnant women, which is against Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, part of the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978.
After COVID, on August 31, I canceled my account because I found out I was pregnant. It was a high-risk pregnancy, and I was told to take it easy. As every person knows, pregnancies are 9 months long, plus another two months for recovery.
From August 2020-August 2021, I was never billed a CENT. Never received any phone calls, e-mails, letters, etc. Leo lied to me repeatedly, telling me they called me multiple times to let me know about my account. I am a stay-at-home mom; I never miss a phone call. He blatantly lied about it.
Then, in August 2021, I received a bill from collections for $220. I called the manager, Leo, at Synergy and he was extremely disrespectful towards me. He said he never canceled my membership, and even though I was pregnant and had a c-section, it should have been on the forefront of my mind to give them a call and “ENSURE” that they weren’t billing me again. If I canceled my account, why would I be thinking about that? I told him it was discrimination. He hung up on me. I will be handling this on a higher level. Women—please avoid this gym, especially if you’re planning on getting pregnant. They will tell you your account is on freeze or canceled, but then bill you anyway. Avoid the headache that I had to go through.

Improper billing practices. Beware. I called to cancel my membership in April at the start of covid. It appeared that all was good, as I received no further charges to my credit card.
One year later I get notified from a credit agency that I owe hundreds of dollars. Not even a call from Synergy to determine what the issue is.
Even the location I went to agrees that I should owe nothing.

I have emailed the home office, and have not received a reply. In speaking to other ex-members it seems that this is a common scam they are pulling.

Equipment diversity is decent and staff is great. Biggest issue at the moment is there is only one squat rack for the entire gym. This gym is also using stonewalling techniques to squeeze every dime out of its patrons. To cancel membership you must go through a convulated process with the intention of only keeping you for a month or two longer so they can keep making money. I don't reccomend coming here at all.

It’s a good gym overall. Treadmill section and weights section is well organized. I wish they would organized the weight machines better, they are all placed in rows. Water fountain is somewhat broken, hope they replace that. I pay $30 a month so overall I would recommend. Best part is the hours of the gym. Staff is lovely. It is very clean and well kept. Good location. Parking is easy.

Horrible customer service. They linked my ID card to some else’s account, and embarrassed me multiple times when I tried to gain access to the gym. The last time the manager attempted to confiscate my membership card so I couldn’t gain access. I was so embarrassed. After being accused of using someone else’s ID, I LEFT to get my gym paperwork and credit card statements to prove I’m a paying member for the last 6months for me and my daughter.

This dolt at the counter had no idea what he was doing, and blamed me.

When I returned with my statements he tried to apologize. Too late, there are better gyms with much more featured then this. They don’t even have a sauna. Save your time and aggravation and join a better gym.

Its an okay gym but the yearly fee went up to $50 which I find outrageous for the circumstances this gym is in. Almost all the ceiling tiles need replacing its unattractive since theres a roof leak and there is ALWAYS water falling on you in the cardio room, there is NO circulation so it ALWAYS smells bad and the matts they provide should be changed/cleaned. Only reason I stay here is because the location is close to my home and its 24/7 which is convenient. They need serious maintenance training.

It's a pretty average gym. They have a decent amount of machines and free weights. The kids that work there seem to not really care at all and you pay 30 a month for not all that much. Excellent gym for the following reasons: 1) Late hours - open 24 hours Monday - Thursday and until 10pm on Saturday & Sunday (most gyms close at 8pm or earlier on weekends), 2) Constantly clean even in the women's restroom, 3) Has two Power cages with platforms for Deadlifts, 4) Allowed to record - which is great for myself as a YouTuber and soon-to-be Certified Personal Trainer, 5) Mostly empty by 10:30 pm, 6) Cardio machines live in a separate room, 7) 3 different Cable stations, 8) Equipment seems to be kept in good condition, 9) I workout there at all hours even at 1:00 am sometimes and feel completely safe, 10) I may get stared at but I'm left alone for the most part!💯👍🏾
