We have 8 Strength Coaches including 2 Doctors on Staff. We offer on-site Physical Therapy and Chiropractic. We are located in downtown Buffalo in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus right down the road from Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Children's Hospital, and Buffalo General Hospital.

I’m a farmer as well as we own our beef processing facility so that we can go direct to the consumer. My job is very physically demanding and I was out of work for 4 1/2 days with my back and after going to Train Smart within a couple days, they got me back on my feet and back working. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate having such quality people work on you without doing surgery or using any drugs. I would recommend Train Smart to anybody that has any kind of issues or just wants to get in shape so they do not get hurt

I observed Joe Fox and his team as part of a physical medicine and rehab rotation during my third year of medical school. I’m 66 and I started at Train Smart less than a year ago after a back injury from strenuous yard work. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I just entered my 6th month with TrainSMART and what a wonderful ride it's been. I've dealt with debilitating pain for ~4 years now and have done multiple rounds of physical therapy, chiropractic, massage (deep tissue, fascial, etc), and even OMT, to little results.
I noticed at my many PT sessions that I felt better when exercising, but PT didn't provide the hands-on, formal instruction that I needed to learn/progress. Enter TrainSMART! I found TrainSMART online due to their incredible reviews and boy did they live up to them!
Fast forward to today, after 5 months of 2-3 sessions a week (mix of private/semi-private), I wish I found TrainSMART years ago. After an hour session, I leave at a 0-1 on the 10 pain scale. An unbelievable achievement. I finally can do so many things I struggled to do before.

I've been working out with TrainSMART for six months, and I am seeing amazing changes in my strength, core stability and confidence in my body image! This is no ordinary gym! My customized fitness plan is like no other I have experienced in past gyms, group workout classes, or fitness regimes.
It is effective and fast. Some of the exercises I could not even do in the beginning were tweaked to meet me where I was at, and now I do them well, without the modification. Before I started with Trainsmart, I was in a lot of back pain and joint pain in my knees ankles, and wrists. My balance and stability were weak. Now that pain is mostly gone, and my core stability is so much stronger!

If you do not read anymore of this review, just know that you will not find a more encouraging and knowledgeable staff than at TrainSMART, and you should not hesitate or be intimidated by walking in their doors and improving your life.
I referred my mother, who was in her early 60s, to TrainSMART and Joe Fox (President) in hopes of her finding someone that would truly invest in her and optimize her health. Joe has exceeded all expectations in this regard. After years of trying the “start-walking-on-the-treadmill and then lift-this-weight” trainers at various local gyms, we found someone that did not just settle on what is typical. Instead, Joe started with a blank sheet of paper and truly evaluated the health needs of my mother and developed a program that was right for her. It is not a static program either; it evolves and adapts as progress is made, maintaining a challenging yet achievable tempo. The personalized program is grounded in Joe’s decades of experience and true love for what he does.
Further, the encouragement that Joe offers is incredible. He has taken someone that was once intimidated and scared of a gym setting and turned her into a confident and motivated individual. The positive change that I have seen in my mother’s life over just a few months is profound. She is physically stronger, more confident, mentally healthier and, most importantly, simply happier. I did not think this change was possible. If someone told me that Joe walked on water, I would believe them :)

TrainSMART has changed my life and that is not an exaggeration. I had the unfortunate experience of having severe and debilitating knee pain right before Christmas 2022. It was clear that this was not something that would improve without some life changes and professional support.
I stated training with Joe Fox at TrainSMART after the start of the New Year. With his excellent knowledge base and ability to motivate, I was quickly on my way to recovery (WITH NO SURGERY!) I started out limping and barely able to walk, but after three months. I can most days walk without any pain and I continue to improve. I feel healthier and stronger since I began training with Joe. By the way, I'm a 64 year old woman! He has taught me it is never too late to adopt healthy habits! He is incredibly supportive, patient and kind. I've been training at TrainSMART for about seven months now and I am beyond impressed. Not only is the facility extremely convenient for me, being located in the same building as where I work, but the staff and trainers are all truly top-notch. They are incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and gracious, especially Dr. Mancuso, who has worked very closely with me to design my programs and keep me on track and motivated toward my goals.
Prior to starting at TrainSMART, I was nearing the end of my rope with my lower back issues that had been plaguing me for years. I had tried everything short of surgery, but nothing seemed to provide any lasting relief. My chiropractor recommended I give Physical Therapy a try and I was turned on to TrainSMART by a coworker who had a great experience with them.
In the short time that I've been training there, I have had a transformational improvement in my lower back health. I am happy to report that I am almost symptom-free now and am able to enjoy activities that I thought were lost to me forever.
Overall, I cannot recommend TrainSMART enough. Even if I did not work in the same building I would still take time out of my busy week to go there and get in a workout. They brought me back from the edge and with their help I now live a more fulfilling life.

I came to TrainSMART in March 2022 having literally never worked out in over 20 years. Decades of traveling for a living had taken a toll on my body, mostly my lower back as I developed bulging/degenerative disks. I had recently fell into some time off from work and decided it was time for a change and to introduce working out into my life. Quite simply, TrainSMART totally changed my mindset and had an immediate impact on lifestyle changes for the better. The trainers are extremely patient and in tune to what you are saying and how your body is moving. Some movements and exercises took me months to finally get, and the trainers were there every step of the way until the light bulb finally turned on and it clicked. In chorus with working out 3 times a week with TrainSMART, I also changed my eating habits and the results were fantastic. Learning new exercises and the programs changing up every month or so keeps it fun and interesting. I look better and feel better, and that's what it's really all about. I signed my teenage daughter up for personal training at TrainSmart. This age group is tricky as they are self conscious! Not only did they make her feel comfortable, but Dr. Mancuso developed a reasonable plan to meet her goals. She looked forward to every workout with her trainer who was hand picked by Joe Fox and she was a wonderful role model for a teenage girl ! As she successfully hit her goals, Dr. Mancuso reevaluated her program to make it more challenging.. TrainSmart is not just for adults, but teens as well!
We were so happy with my daughter’s progress that I decided to sign-up for the group training to rehab a bulging disc issue that I had suffered with for 2 years. It made it difficult to walk and go about my daily routine . I had been to doctors, physical therapists and massage therapists, nothing relieved the pain of the disc hitting my sciatica. I was hesitant because I felt I had tried everything but I was wrong ! Dr. Mancuso developed a plan to rehab my back. His program helped me tremendously and the trainer’s that work there have knowledge of the back and how the body works and would make adjustments as we went along. I can tell you that I am able to walk without pain and have learned from the staff at TrainSmart ways to continue to use to rehab my back when I’m at home, or on the road.
Thank you TrainSmart for allowing my daughter to build her confidence, self-esteem, and enjoy working out! Also for allowing me to walk without pain, all without any surgeries and no meds ! This is a review of the spectacular team of Joe Fox and Brandon Mancuso of TrainSmart, but it begins 20 years ago on 9/11, when I was a reporter at the World Trade Center, standing catty-corner from the South Tower when it collapsed.
My acute exposure to WTC debris that day led to severe breathing problems and the collapse of my cardiovascular and muscle strength, leaving me with days when it’s a struggle to text, let alone stand up and get outside.
But the severity of my circumstances did not scare off Jim or Brandon. In fact, it did quite the opposite. In no uncertain terms, they wanted to help me.
On a moment’s notice, Brandon made the time to come see me on a Sunday morning to
evaluate my basic functional abilities.
He wasn’t interested in seeing whether I could leap a tall building in a single bound.
Instead, he honed in on the smallest details of where my body showed limited range of motion and strength, as well as any points of pain.
He was warm, patient, encouraging and professional.
Little did I know that Brandon’s willingness to accommodate me on a Sunday morning at a moment’s notice was, in fact, this team’s modus operandi.
Enter Joe Fox, a trainer who must have a map through the time-space continuum, because he manages to make time for his clients no matter how hectic or unpredictable their schedules may be or, quite literally, where they live in the world. A 10 1/2-hour time difference won’t stop Joe from making time for you.
A trainer of Joe’s caliber could choose to work solely with professional athletes and Hollywood celebrities, but he’s less interested in your societal status than in how many glasses of water you’re drinking a day.
And he is as committed to helping an octogenarian get back on her feet after surgery as he would be in helping an Olympian address a potentially career-altering injury.
My health changes on a day-by-day basis, so Joe adjusts our approach accordingly.
To my great fortune, he sees his business as one of subtleties, where seemingly inconsequential choices can make a profound differences in the long run.
This sets him apart from other trainers and healthcare professionals, who can grow frustrated with what’s often my one-step-forward-two-steps-back “progress.”
Joe understands that the smallest details in people’s everyday lives - like having the strength to stand in line or take a walk - are big wins in my world. As he aptly describes it, “We are quite literally fighting for the millimeters!”
It really doesn’t matter if your a competitive athlete or a grandmother — we’re all starting from our own square one.
And I’m just so grateful to know that Joe and Brandon are uniquely committed to meeting me wherever I am and have the patience and expertise to help me get to where I want to be.

Signing up to workout with TrainSMART has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my personal health. I’ve tried working out many times, with different trainers and programs on my own, but they’ve never worked for me. TrainSMART’s approach is completely unique and they really focus on form and what is appropriate for the individual, so I’m doing a program that works for me that I can really benefit from, rather than the traditional approach of jumping into workouts I’m not ready for. In the 5 months I’ve been with them, I’m already in the best shape of my life and seeing improvements constantly. I've been training with TrainSMART for about a year and half, and I can say that I’m in the best shape I've been in since High School (where I ran cross country and track). Joe, Brandon, Tim, and team do an amazing job of initially analyzing each trainee to understand their strengths and weaknesses, pairing that with your goals, and customizing a program just for you. While other gyms and programs may focus on solely building “glamor muscles” or a CrossFit style focus on doing maximum reps as fast as possible, they follow a scientific approach that focuses on form and allows you to properly gain strength while avoiding injury. With this approach and the focus on building a strong core, their programs are great for people who are looking to get back in shape, fix existing problems, preventively avoid future injuries, and gain strength. There is honestly no other group of trainers that stay up to date with the latest science and techniques. Their attention to the smallest details of your form on every workout is not something that you can get from a $10/month gym or a Peloton membership. I have referred my family and friends (and really anyone I talk to) to TrainSMART. The ones that have joined have raved about the results that they see and feel. As a student who is currently shadowing at the TrainSMART facility, I’ve I gotten to witness the day-to-day affairs at the facility. After spending around 3 months here, I would say my overall experience has been rather extraordinary, With the numerous staff members I get to see throughout the day, everyone in the facility has the same goal and was the reason I decided to shadow here, to increase functional strength training and improve functional movement, allowing the clients freedom of pain and increased daily activity, which essentially is Quality of Life improvement. With improvement being their ideal goal, I’ve seen clients who have coming in consistently and I’ve seen first-hand the impact TrainSMART has given them. Every client’s goal is different as well, whether it’s to lose weight or improve muscular strength in lower body and lower back, each exercise program given is tailored to the client themselves. I attended the TrainSMART workshop on Tuesday, March 23rd. It was a very insightful presentation, and I learned a few key things from it. The speaker, Joe, really emphasized how muscle burns fat, and how we need to find plans that work for us and stick to them. Instead of trying to achieve the high goals and jump into complex training or diet plans, we need to find a more achievable plan that aligns with our lifestyles. It is also important to note that it is fine to splurge occasionally and enjoy foods we like, but we must get right back into the diet again after for us not to lose our gains. I felt that Joe delivered the points in a thorough manner, easy to follow along, and I was able to take away many tips that I can apply to my own lifestyle in order to improve my health and wellness. It was very realistic and many would benefit from attending a workshop or learning more about what TrainSMART has to offer!

In my line of work I am sitting/standing still for much of the day. I have found that, over time, I am developing lower back problems and experiencing severe chronic pain as a result of my work behavior. This is not an uncommon story among software developers and others who spend so much time working on computers. My constant lower back pain resulted in me being less willing to exercise and to be active. Of course, less exercise (and less movement in general) only compounded my lower back issues and a downward spiral had clearly begun. At a friend's suggestion I contacted Joe Fox and he personally assured me that with his help I would be able to take control of my own back pain likely without surgery or medications. I LOVED the sound of this.
(I had spent time with various Physical Therapists and had realized some good results but nothing that actually made me feel “in-control” of the situation)
After training with Joe, Brandon, and the rest of their team regularly I feel that have finally taken control of my back pain. I cannot stress enough how liberating a feeling this is. I am back to exercising (safely) and have even gotten back to a few sports I didn’t think that I would ever be able to return to.

I personally think TrainSmart is a one of those rare "training" facilities that address the problems insurance-based physical therapy cannot manage due to the restrictions on the American healthcare system. As a competing athlete, I've faced my fair share of bodily discomfort and injuries, going to 5 physical therapy places that offer cold pack,hot pack, electrode therapy, acupuncture, and massage as modalities, and very cookie cutter exercise prescriptions that only have served in temporarily reducing pain, not curing the root. In the short month I have been attending, I've had reduction in symptoms of pain that are permanent, and have increased my athletic performance from through a method of training the fundamentals that are neglected in most strength and conditioning coaches I have trained under to this day. Joe Fox and Brandon Mancuso are excellent rehab specialists that are passionate at what they do, and are life long learners, and work with an extensive network of capable MDs and Physical Therapists to thoroughly treat patients. I highly recommend TrainSmart whether it be for weight-loss, rehabilitation, and to improve athletic performance.

The most mundane and oftentimes skipped exercises and stretches for me, like planks, come alive under Joe and Brandon’s tutelage. I attended the GolfSMART workshop offered by TrainSMART on 7/25/19. This presentation was outstanding and based upon science and was very empowering. Mr. Joe Fox and Dr. Brandon Mancuso did exactly what they promised. They strategically and intelligently presented the facts based upon research and then presented the simple exercises that were designed to help improve your golf game at any level without experiencing any low back pain. As a local WNY high school golf coach and a Level One golf coach for the First Tee of WNY, I found that these skills and exercises are transferable to the student-athletes I coach and or instruct. No matter the age or level of experience, the skills presented by TrainSMART can and will make the difference and help improve and grow the game of golf. The skills introduced in the workshop provided an excellent base that will allow the golfers to warm their bodies and loosen the muscles and joints prior to starting the golf round. What was refreshing was that these sport science professionals made the learning environment fun, engaging and spoke at a level where anyone can learn and understand the concepts and skills presented. They allowed us to videotape the presentation and answer all questions asked. If you are looking for place to train and what want to improve your golf game. I highly recommend TrainSmart. Golf is a life-long sporting activity that can and should be enjoyed by all. However, the sport of golf places demands on our bodies (repetitive movement patterns) that if done incorrectly can cause health problems (low back issues)., which affects ones personal enjoyment level. Spending 20 minutes a day incorporating the skills taught can and will make the difference, change your life and allow you to grow and enjoy your golf game. Keep up the great work and please develop more GolfSMART workshop. You are making a difference by providing these educational workshops.

Joe had an in house training called Core Training 101 which was excellent. I learned more in this one training than I did my entire last semester that I had in college. Everything that I had learned from this training had challenged what i had known about the core already and how basically a majority of my workout when I go to the gym is not good for me in the long run and needs to be revised. One big concept that I had taken home for myself was what I had learned about the abdominal. The purpose of the abdominal is to resist motion. However, more often than not, when we see people in the gym, the exercises they do, they do with the intent of creating motion even though the abs are more for anti rotation and to prevent one from going into lumbar over extensions as an example. So Joe and his team are excellent at making sure the clients achieve their goals while at the same time making sure to correct deficiencies, and their exercises all have evidence based practice behind them from some of the leaders in functional strength training and safe back training.

Joe's presentation was very informative and was a good fit for those that are already on the road to eating healthy and for those of us that are trying to get on that road! I trained at TrainSMART for two months in May+June and I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a personal trainer; from the inexperienced beginner to the fitness enthusiast who is looking to avoid injury. My goal was to become stronger without risking injuring myself as the weights got heavier and also to lower my body fat percentage. Both goals achieved as evidenced by my pre and post measurements. The trainers were very knowledgeable and extremely helpful (mostly trained with Brandon and Andrew). They want you to achieve your full potential and have long term results. They provide constant encouragement and support as well as a friendly environment. They tailor and adjust your workout plan according to your baseline, progress and any concerns you may have as you go and on the spot! Personally, I would train with them longer but my budget and lifestyle (travel) do not allow it for now.

When I first moved into Buffalo I researched a few gyms before making a decision to commit to TrainSMART. My routine traditionally included working out with heavy weights, aerobics, spinning and running.
What intrigued me the most about TrainSMART is their unique approach to fitness. Less reps with proper form provides a greater benefit over many reps with bad form. Body weight workouts, lighter weight workouts and overall functional fitness moves while concentrating on alignment is a superior challenge. Ultimately it is an effective way to change up a workout routine and cross train.

Some of the exercises are unorthodox, but that's what makes them special! When asked what my goals were when I came, I replied with longevity in my sports without injury. I am a triathlete, and marathoner. I've struggled with injury in the past. I'm not built like athletes you commonly associate with either sport. I've had weight struggles for most my adult life. They perform an initial screen to evaluate your weaknesses and limitations (unlike many other gyms). Using that screen, they construct an individualized workout plan to work on such weaknesses. I’ve been working out with Brandon Mancuso for 7 months. Before this my wife and I went to Bally’s for a year or so, without a trainer, and we eventually got bored with the same machines all the time. This has not been a problem with TrainSMART. Their workouts focus on multiple coordinated muscle groups at the same time. They mostly use suspension and resistance training, which allows for a highly customizable, personal and diverse exercise program. We’ve never been bored by exercise routine.
Their facility is also conveniently located right in the middle of medical campus in downtown Buffalo.
Brandon is very approachable and is an exceptional fitness trainer. We’ve tried a couple of trainers at other gyms in the past, and have never stuck with it for long. Brandon has been the exception. On top of his experience as a trainer, he also has a Doctor of chiropractic, so he’s been able to pay attention to potential problems and help avoid injuries.
Overall I highly recommend both Brandon and TrainSMART as an alternative to the standard gym routine.

The philosophy is all about health, and making sure you are being trained correctly, with a strong emphasis on the core and corrective movements. I have never been consistent in working out, but with Brandon, I have been encouraged to be consistent and I see steady improvement in both my mobility and strength. The workouts are creative and varied, and continuously challenging!
Brandon is all about general health, getting enough sleep, drinking more water, eating better - and he constantly includes practical tips to incorporate into the everyday. They are also super-flexible with times, which is a huge bonus when work or other commitments get in the way. Brandon goes out of his way to make sure you can get your workout in! I really couldn't recommend Brandon more highly!

INVEST IN YOUR HEALTH. I have been working with Joe and Brandon at TrainSMART for a few months now and I can honestly say that I've never had such a comprehensive and personalized workout program. I have not only been training my body, but also my mind. I have learned the importance of maintaining a neutral spine throughout my entire workout and how certain muscle groups work for stability, while others work for mobility. I continue to grow stronger steadily, without experiencing overwhelming soreness, because my program is designed to make me work hard without over-training. I have tried a wide variety of workout programs including p90x, yoga, weightlifting, running, and circuit training; but my body has never felt better than it does now. I really enjoy the training experience at TrainSMART. For the first time, ever, I am regularly working out. They are very careful to protect the lower back and they promote better mobility and flexibility along with core strengthening. I move better and feel better. They also provide advice for eating well and better habits.

I've been working out with Brandon Mancuso and Joe Fox at TrainSmart for almost a year. As someone who is a bit past middle age (!) my initial goals were different than a lot of people who work out to look good or lose weight. My goals were to become more flexible, gain strength and reduce the chronic low back pain I've had for years. I am proud to say I met those goals and feel great (except if I miss a session or two, then my back pain flairs up again...but that's due to my own laziness)! Brandon and Joe have helped me to achieve more fitness than I thought possible for someone with my level of back pain. No More Lower Back Pain! I have worked with a number of personal trainers in Buffalo, NY and I believe Joe Fox from TrainSMART Personal Fitness is by far the best! I was overweight, had no energy, chronic low back pain, and felt physically in a rut. I felt like I was going to the gym and wandering without direction. I lost more than 40 lbs in 6 months and just feel great! My low back pain is gone! Joe taught me how to build my core endurance and stabilize my spine first before running me through exercises. I learned more from Joe in my first few sessions than I did in years with several other personal trainers.
