Uptown Movement has, annoyingly, spoiled me for all other gyms. You know how Upper Manhattan is filled with artists, actors, dancers, and folks who have been relentless honing their craft for years? Eoghan (like "Owen") and the trainers here are the fitness equivalent of that. The programming is thoughtful, comprehensive, excellent, and constantly refined. After years mostly working out on my own (and doing a decent job) I had *so* much to learn from the training here, and they've opened me up to a new world of knowledge of strength and mobility. And that's to say nothing of the amazing community of people and friends we met! We sadly moved upstate this summer--but Uptown Movement was one of the highlights of our New York community. The trainers do an outstanding job with people of all levels. Whether you've been working out for years or feel like a newbie, intimidated to step into a gym, the folks here are welcoming, smart, and cut through the fitness-noise-BS to give you the *real* stuff--helping you get stronger for every aspect of your life. I can't recommend them highly enough!

What a great gym. Safe, fun, effective workouts for all levels, ages, abilities. Excellent trainers. Great classes. Very local, friendly members. A real community place. The outdoor space out back is wonderful. Not a fancy, tons of equipment place. The coaches really care about fitness and wellbeing at all stages of life.

Uptown Movement is a welcome haven for anyone looking to add movement, strength, and confidence to their lives. The coaches listen and care about your experience, tailoring the program to match your body's needs. They teach you to really tune into what your body is telling you and to set intentions for your work. The programs are challenging but always prove that you are capable of so much more than you think. And finally, the community is unmatched. Everyone is so kind and supportive, and I have so much fun bumping into fellow gym members on the streets of Inwood!

I've attended Uptown Movement for over a year (joined in July 2024). This is more than a local gym-- it's a community! There are many meetup gatherings like hikes, kayaking, and even indoor competitions! There's also community gatherings for training for upcoming races and events (e.g. Iron Man). The instructors are all very knowledgeable and empathetic!

I made so much progress here as a newbie and entering rly overweight and overwhelmed. My job is transferring me outside of the area, otherwise I would've stayed!

If you're in the area, please give Uptown Movement a try! It really is unlike any gym I've joined!

Uptown Movement is an incredible gym for all experience levels. The movement techniques taught in classes are life skills that everyone should learn. This gym has positively changed the way I thought about myself and helped me create a community support. Highly recommend for anyone who has felt excluded from or burned by gym experiences in the past.

I have a huge respect for the staff and their practice at Uptown Movement. They are very welcoming and supportive with new folks, and their focus in classes and coaching on the quality and the feel of movement, with lots of feedback, has been effective. I feel great training in the gym, even though I don’t have a ton of prior experience. But I’ve been even more surprised by the ways that other activities, like bicycling around the city, running errands and carrying things, and just sitting and moving during my day, feel more balanced, more engaged, and stronger since beginning this work.

I am thrilled I found this amazing gym. I mostly swim and do yoga, but since I’m a woman over 50, my doctor has told me I need to lift weights and do other types of strength training. But I have a hard time doing it on my own – it just seems so boring compared to other sorts of exercise. But Uptown Movement changed this for me. I signed up for the unlimited classes, and I went 2-3 times a week. I’ve been at it for about two years now, and the difference in my overall fitness and well-being is huge.

There is a friendliness to this place, an openness to great diversity in terms of age, race, sexuality, body size and type, language, etc. that is immensely appealing. I like the coaches and my classmates (mostly women) enough to make me want to go. The emphasis is never on how one looks or losing weight – it's always on increasing mobility and strength, especially as one ages. Before I started taking these classes, I had back problems (especially when picking up my 70-pound dog to bathe her), and I often sprained an ankle (weakened by a bad injury in my youth) and sometimes fell (my dog pulls me a lot). For the last 2 years, I haven’t sprained my ankle, haven’t been injured falling (and have hardly ever fallen at all), and more. And I can now deadlift my weight.

In sum, I think this gym is great, and I encourage you to do your body (and mind) a great favor and join.

Uptown Movement is the most supportive and encouraging gym I've ever been to, and the only one I know of that seems invested in giving us all a sense of agency over our own results. I couldn't recommend it more highly.

Uptown Movement is honestly one of a kind.
From the second you walk in, you can just feel how much care and intention is behind everything they do. The instructors aren’t just here to run classes, they’re truly invested in each person’s growth. You start off with Foundations classes that teach you how to move well, not just for workouts, but in everyday life too. It’s smart, supportive, and makes you feel set up for success from day one.

I’ve been training on and off since I was 11 (shout out to the early 2000s Weight Watchers era 🙃), and I’ve tried just about everything — CrossFit, Zumba, Pole, Boxing. But nothing has kept me as consistent or motivated as the coaches and community at Uptown. I’ve been here four months now and have seen a real difference in my form, mobility, energy, and even my mindset.

The programming is super thoughtful and progressive, it’s clear that every workout is designed with purpose. I never feel like I’m just going through the motions. It’s been helping me not only physically but mentally too. I’m rebuilding trust in my body after a scary back injury, reconnecting to how I move, and actually enjoying it.

What really makes Uptown special is the kindness. You can feel the care, not just from the coaches, but from the other members too. It’s welcoming, inclusive, and empowering. As someone in a bigger body, I’ve never once felt judged or out of place. The coaches meet you with respect and encouragement, no matter your size, ability, or experience level.

The space itself is clean, inviting, and really well-equipped without being intimidating. No rows of mirrors or people flexing in the corner. Just folks showing up, working hard, and cheering each other on.

Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to grow from where you are, this is such a good place to land. Honestly, my only regret is not joining sooner. I spent way too long investing in programs that looked similar but never came close to what Uptown offers.

This gym is a win! It’s impossible to not feel good after attending one of the different fitness classes they offer. Each class is challenging but encouraging, and has a variety of exercises and lifts to learn and work on. The coaches are stalwart professionals, engaging and attentive; and classmates bring an all-in-it-together vibe.

As someone with very little experience in gyms—my lone, brief gym membership was back in the mid-90’s—I think Uptown Movement was a perfect place to come back in and feel comfortable learning all about ‘kettlebell skills’ and ‘strength and mobility’ (the fitness world has evolved a lot since my day!) This gym meets you where you’re at on your fitness journey - whether you’re a seasoned vet or a gym newbie like me, Uptown Movement is the place be.

I decided to join Uptown Movement a little bit more than a year ago because I was feeling really down and defeated after a series of personal problems (my therapist suggested it) and at age 57, this has been indeed a life changing experience for me.

Before I started, Eoghan set up an personal appointment with me to better understand my needs and was so welcoming, understanding and gentle. I was emotionally exhausted and I immediately felt that Uptown Movement would be a place where I would be able to heal mentally and physically and it has been the case in so many ways.

Classes are the least pretentious that you could imagine. The instructors are super nice, super attentive to each individual (classes are rarely more than 10 or 12 participants), and super encouraging as well. The mood is focused but there are many fun moments. There are no mirrors in the room, which encourages you to turn your attention inward, to that particular sensation when you activate this specific muscle, to your balance, etc.

Classes often integrate an element of play, which has forced me to reactivate some neural pathways that had been dormant since I was 7, and this has been exhilarating. There is also a lot of focus on flexibility, movement, fluidity, coordination and the ability to execute series of different movements, often inspired from the animal realm, which again is profoundly rejuvenating.

I love the "Foundations" level that has allowed me to basically reconnect with my body while also slowly but surely push my limits. It's all about body awareness and after a few weeks I could already feel that I was standing or sitting differently, and that I was already stronger. (I usually go to 3 classes a week).

I feel so much more "grounded" now and honestly, my plan is to continue with Uptown Movement for as long as I live in the neighborhood. You can't reverse age, but these classes make me feel so young and confident in the future.

I trained here while living in NYC, and it was more than just a gym—it felt like a second home. The trainers are incredibly knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely invested in your progress. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned athlete, they tailor workouts to challenge you while keeping them fun and dynamic.

The community is also amazing! Everyone is so supportive, which made even the toughest workouts enjoyable. I achieved personal bests in both deadlifts and my 5K time thanks to their guidance and encouragement.

The space is clean, well-organized, and equipped with everything you need for strength training, cardio, and more. Uptown Movement isn’t just a place to work out—it’s a place to grow, push your limits, and feel empowered.

If you're looking for a gym that combines professionalism, expertise, and a welcoming vibe, look no further.

For those who are invested in being their strongest and best selves look no further. One word to describe Uptown Movement is intention. The workouts are intentional with movement education and injury prevention in mind. The instructors/trainers are well informed in their guidance to ensure you see and feel results each week.

I have invested in many gyms, trainers, group fitness classes, but none compare to the level of effectiveness Uptown Movement provides. You WILL get stronger no matter what your fitness level and no matter your age. You WILL be amazed by your abilities. If you want to get in better shape for yourself, for your kids, for you grandkids, this is the place to be and you WILL achieve optimal strength, endurance, and mobility. This place is sincerely a hidden gem.

This place might charge Equinox prices for a monthly membership, but it's COMPLETELY worth it. I've been going to the explore classes for a couple of weeks, and the experience has been wonderful. I hate working out and have never been able to keep up a gym routine. I actually look forward to going to class now. Disclaimer - if you are not a fan of CONSTANT feedback, this place is not for you. I, on the other hand, love it. The trainers are very knowledgeable and will immediately correct, adjust, or modify exercises in the moment. Come through!

Im a traveling musician who was new to NYC and looking for a gym to call my new sanctuary. This gym was DEFINITELY it. Amazing and caring staff and a variety of classes offered. I opted for a more “open gym” feel which the owner, Eoghan, happily obliged. I was in this gym 6 days a week for 3 months and regret nothing. 10/10 will be back.

Love this place. My membership is strictly for access to the gym not for the classes. The space itself is well kept and very open. It is perfect for a workout. I enjoy the easy access into the gym, simply open the door with my cellphone and get to work. I go in the early mornings and usually have the space all to myself and my tunes.

Also Eoghan is awesome, he designed specific strength programs to improve my strength for my jujitsu training. I have nothing but positive things to say about Uptown Movement it is a really great place with wonderful people.

Uptown Movement is a truly exceptional gym! There is simply a different philosophy here -- it is all about learning and growing and progressing with the support of the gym community around me. Instructors know their stuff, and they know how to teach! Classes are small and really well-structured which allows for specific individual feedback and encouragement. The progression of classes ensures that the work I'm doing is most appropriate and beneficial. I feel like I have a team working with me -- one that shares my goals of health, wellness, and longevity and has the expertise to help me get there. I am really grateful to have found a gym where I can work hard, have fun, and trust the process.

I have been looking for a gym like this for ten years in NYC, let alone in the neighborhood I live. Uptown Movement has the BEST trainers and philosophy for training I’ve ever been to, with its focus on education and community. You can be a total beginner or have a lifetime of exercise and you’ll be inspired to improve your healthful movement. A gym like this ANYWHERE I’ve been is completely inaccessible financially but not here. I have had a lot of great fitness education in my life, and I am very picky when it comes to joining a new gym, so when I came to Uptown Movement in the middle of the pandemic, I immediately knew this place was something special. Eoghan and the team have created a true community where you can explore and have fun with movement regardless of your fitness background. The level system of classes at Uptown Movement give you the opportunity to actually get stronger and more mobile, instead of being boxed into the the same hamster wheel training for years on end, never making any real progress. I joined this gym in August 2021 for the classes. I was (and still am) trying to lose pandemic weight, and it was close by. I wasn't ready for the price tag, but ultimately prayed over it and joined because it's an investment on my health. And cheaper than a personal trainer. And running just wasn't making the weight budge.

Anyways, I didn't lose any weight. For a bit there I gained some. Which is fine because I ultimately LEARNED so much about weight lifting and moving with my whole body. I'm channeling Michelle Obama, because my arms actually have a little more definition?

Back to the learning.

There are three levels, Explore (for potatoes like me), Evolve (for people who've graduated Explore or are just more fit), and Expand. I don't know any one in Expand, but thats for the really strong folks?

But yeah, I've been in the Explore classes since August, and I learned every from hinging properly and the whole "make light weights heavy and heavy weight light" to kettle ball flows, and kettlevball swings, and the instructors are AMAZING!!

Every single one of them really know what they're doing and they do it WELL. It also doesn't hurt that they all bring a bit of their personalities to the class, and it's not super clinical/contrived script. They also listen to how people are feeling and help modify certain movements if things aren't working.

Lastly, I love the friends I've made around the neighborhood from joining this gym. Everyone is supportive and sometimes we'll do a few more exercises after class, depending on how tired folks are. This is truly a judgement free zone and I feel super comfortable here, and I'm glad I took a chance on it. One of my better investments in the the past year.

Oh! We also don't have to wear shoes/ fancy work out stuff. Some people even show up in pj's. Good vibes only. ^.^

This has been my happy place.

SPACE & EQUIPMENT:
-The gym is an amazing space, and I love both indoor and outdoor spaces. I love the green turf for sled/prowler pushing/pulling and other movement
-Plenty of squat racks, pullup bars, gymnastics rings, and all of the kettlebells you'd ever need (and lots of other miscellaneous equipment like a GHD, back extension, bands, maces, clubs, foam rollers, etc.)

PEOPLE & COMMUNITY:
-Unlike with some experiences I've had in the past, the people here are friendly, courteous , inviting, and encouraging yet non-intimidating

CLASSES & TRAINERS:
-The classes are great and adjusted to people of various training backgrounds (from complete beginners to advanced athletes, and from young kids to seniors, though most of the people tend to be middle-aged professionals) and contain all the elements you'd want (strength training, mobility, movement, prehab/rehab, mindfulness, cardio, athleticism, making some friends along the way, etc.)
-The trainers know their stuff and are very encouraging

The owner (Eoghan) is a great person and someone that has helped me not just get stronger but *not get injured* and rehab nagging issues. He truly loves what he does. This isn't just a money-making scheme for him.

The last thing I'd say is that if you're reading this review and are on the fence about trying out the gym, I would take the leap and at least give it a short trial period (as I did in the past). 99% likely, you'll be happy you did.

If you do come to the gym and see a weirdo doing strange grip exercises, that's probably me :)

Best gym ever!! Online, in person, yes this really is the best. Small group classes make it feel I’m having a personal training session every time I work out. And that’s true of the online classes too. I’ve belonged to many gyms over the years and spent a lot of time on cardio while grabbing some weights here and there, but at Hanuman I’ve learned how to properly strength train. Now I’m confident using kettlebells and maces (and sand bags, my made-at-home pandemic weights of choice), have improved my overall mobility and balance, learned about breathing, and can even do cardio better then before. The community is inclusive, diverse and welcoming. Can’t recommend Hanuman more highly!

The transition to an online/virtual experience during New York’s “pause” is being expertly managed, with well-developed thematic courses concentrating on mobility, balance, strength and power. As the lockdown changes (along with our stress levels) so does the club's response. I am sure that the transition back to in-person classes will be just as well accomplished.

There's no place like Hanuman--its super-knowledgeable and dedicated owner and instructors offer a variety of small-group classes with really thoughtful and fun programming in all modalities (in-person, outdoors, and now online).

Amazing Gym! Fantastic Community! Smart Fitness! First, the gun's plan for reopening and maintaining physical distancing is thorough and thoughtful. I've been attending its small group (and now zoom) classes regularly for two years and they have helped me grow stronger and understand how my body works - lessons I've applied to how I move all day and everywhere. I'm stronger and fitter and feel better than I ever have. The community is amazing and the place is full of humor and good cheer. Highly recommend!!

This is an amazing gym and has really been a game-changer for me. I've got some chronic low back and hip issues and was never really able to manage them effectively until I started regular classes at Hanuman. Their approach is clear and methodical, and over time I started building not only strength and endurance, but also the confidence to work out on my own without hurting myself or doing things incorrectly. They are sticklers about body awareness and form, and it really pays off - I needed that level of attention and detail. The instructors are all wonderful and extremely good teachers, and they really care about your progress. I can't say enough good things about what this gym, and the gym community, has meant for me the past two years.

Heartfelt thanks to Eoghan and his team of trainers at Hanuman for humanizing the lockdown experience. Hanuman made the hard pivot to remote training from the get-go, eliciting/building upon community feedback throughout to keep workouts dynamic. Doing so, the HH team has provided us all with continued access to strength and mobility training, and to each other, during a grim, strange period. Hanuman's commitment to the health, safety, and wellbeing of its team and community -- and the club's swift adaptability to a truly terrible situation -- is exemplary.

I’ve never taken classes where the exercises are taught as clearly as they are here. I took high-intensity classes for years and never felt I knew if I was actually doing an exercise correctly. I leave each class with a better awareness of my body and have never been so sore in my life (but in the right places and for once not in my lower back from poor form)! Truly grateful to have found this place.

Hanamuan is a special place. Workouts are thoughtful, interesting and work! I am stronger and fitter and smarter about how to move than I've ever been because of the work at Hanuman. (This includes years of practicing yoga, spinning, etc.) Plus, the community is extraordinary -- supportive, diverse, engaged. Really, can't say enough good things about it. Go today!

I tried it out, but it wasn't for me. I'm more of a downtown-high intensity type, but these group workouts just felt slow and easy. They're trying to build some sort of community, but it wasn't my tribe.

The classes and instructors here are amazing. If typical gyms and workout classes bore you, or if you have injuries and need super knowledgeable instructors, do yourself a favor and join. In addition to that, the community is great - members are a diverse bunch of locals who care about the neighborhood and support your goals. They also recently changed locations to make improvements to the space!

This place is a semi hidden gem. Huge studio, sky lights, just redone and gorgeous. Trainers are attentive and professional. Boxing and taikwando are also offered, but I've not taken yet. Jamie, Mitch, Eoghan, Tessa are all stellar. Stop in.
