I would highly recommend this dojo to anyone - and especially those with kids.

Our family looked at a few dojos in the area before settling on Ancient Arts and are very glad we did!

Shihan is extremely knowledgeable (many, many decades of experience), great with kids, and the format and structure is convenient. He also provides good value vs the cost of competitors.

Again - highly recommend!

Our kids have been attending this school for the past four years, and we couldn't be happier with the experience. Shihaan is not only highly skilled but also incredibly motivating, and genuinely invested in each child's growth—both as martial artists and as individuals.

We've seen tremendous improvements in our children's confidence, discipline, and physical fitness. The school fosters a supportive and respectful environment.

We’re grateful to have found a place that balances strong martial arts training with positive life lessons. Highly recommend this school to any parent looking for a safe, inspiring, and well-run ji-jitsu program!

I honestly would not recommend this place. Back in 2021 (specifically the end) I had the worst experience here and I would even describe the environment as toxic, a word I hate using. I don’t go here anymore and I honestly wouldn’t recommend anyone doing the same. However, 2 stars due to some of the legitimacy of the techniques. I was given a rank I truly didn’t deserve at all looking back. I’m writing this years later. I would also personally want to find a more legitimate school as well, in my opinion. The class I was in got insulted at one point, I feel like. I just have had enough of all the negativity. Although everyone has different experiences, l do not recommend this place. Please do not come here or send your child here.

My son and I have both been students at Ancient Arts Family Karate since the fall of 2024. Our family has over 20 years experience in the Shuri-ryu practice and were looking for a school that held close to the teachings of its founder Master Robert Trias. We are honored to work with Master Isaak and our fellow Karate-ka in keeping the traditions of our American karate system.
In the dojo we practice not only the physical aspects of martial arts, but also the social and emotional benefits of a responsible, disciplined lifestyle. Master Isaak's instruction has greatly increased my son's self-respect empowering him to take account of his own actions and begin the journey of personal development through adversity as well as edification. As a parent, it was has been an honor to watch my child experience the joy of achieving a promotion that was earned by the applications of these tenets, rather than freely given.
We greatly appreciate the emphasis the Shuri system places on honesty, accountability and discipline and look forward to continuing our journey together with Master Isaak. If you're looking to join a martial arts program that offers the opportunity for growth through responsibility and discipline, Ancient Arts Family Karate may be the place for you. Please stop by and see what Mater Isaak and the Shuri-ryu system are all about.

We have been proud parents of Ancient Arts Family Karate school in Cary for couple of years now. The Karate school is blessed with an exceptional karate instructor who truly embodies the spirit of the martial art. “Ancient Arts Family Karate in Cary is exceptional. The unique one-on-one instruction has significantly impacted my 5-year-old’s discipline and confidence, far beyond our expectations. The dedicated instructor creates a personal connection, making each session enjoyable and highly effective for kids. This isn’t just a place for martial arts; it’s a nurturing environment where my son has grown in focus and respect, excited for every lesson. The center is well-maintained and welcoming, embodying the perfect setting for children to thrive. I highly recommend Ancient Arts Family Karate to any parent seeking a meaningful and transformative martial arts experience for their child. It’s truly a place where young students learn more than just karate—they learn valuable life skills.”

I highly recommend this dojo. I searched around and this was the only place where the owner/teacher took the time to talk to my son and me. Don Isaak is honest and transparent with regard to the price, contract, and other fees as the student progresses. I appreciate he is the only one who teaches all the classes and knows how to develop each student. It's not a kid teaching other kids karate, so your money is well-invested. Aside from teaching discipline in an “old-school” way, morals, values, and respect for oneself and others are present in every class. My son has been attending Ancient Arts for five months and I’m pleased to have chosen it.

I would highly recommend this class to those who can appreciate a karate teacher who teaches the value of hard work, dedication and respect all while making it fun. My daughter really enjoys taking karate here and I have seen a tremendous improvement in her focus and positivity within a week or two after her initial sign up. She has been here a year and is still enjoying going to class each week.

This establishment, initially good in its modest size, underwent an unfavorable transformation as my children progressed to the intermediate levels. Both my 11-year-old and 7-year-old participate in karate classes twice a week. However, due to conflicting swimming lessons on Thursdays, the younger one had to reduce his attendance to once a week. This adjustment led Shihan to exhibit bullying behavior, neglecting to recognize my son's earned stripe for nearly a month. When my son inquired about testing for the next belt, Shihan accused him of irregular attendance, despite his consistent weekly class attendance.

Simultaneously, my 11-year-old, holding a purple belt, faced allegations of not practicing at home. During the test application process, Shihan questioned his dedication, casting doubts on his commitment. Despite my son's assurance of practice, Shihan accused him of dishonesty, making disparaging remarks that gradually eroded his confidence. Witnessing this, I encouraged my son to persist in affirming his dedication. When I intervened, Shihan directed critical comments towards both my son and me, asserting that parents were also being dishonest.

Instructor (Shehan) has good days and bad days and would pick a kid to bully on his bad days. Unwilling to compromise my children's confidence and positive attributes by continuing classes here, we've opted to terminate our commitment, even though fees have been paid until the end of April 2024. Shihan's bullying behavior goes against our objective of nurturing kindness and confidence in our children. If you want your kids to develop confidence, kindness, respect stay away from this place, instructor himself lack those qualities.

Sadly, Mr. Isaak (Shihan) is way past his prime. I’m sure he used to be a great Karate instructor for over 35 years, but lately he seems to be having more bad days than good ones. On his good days he is wonderful, but on his bad days he will intimidate, humiliate, and belittle the kids and parents.
No parent wants or expects a karate instructor to just hand over a belt every month just because they pay the monthly dues. Parents expectations from a Karate class are not just self-defense, belts, or pictures to frame. Kids should be learning respect, discipline, and self-control, but this teacher lacks self-control and discipline, often relying on shouting and intimidation. The class should be helping the kids build confidence, but the teacher does exactly the opposite, belittling them often. If you want your child to thrive, do not send them here.

I wish I could give negative stars to this business and strongly advise caution before enrolling your children in this program.
First of all, The environment, unfortunately, feels quite negative. The business owner, who is also a karate instructor, tends to use intimidation under the guise of motivation, which is concerning. For example, my 7-year-old son often experiences nightmares and significant stress after his karate sessions, to the point where even the mere mention of karate causes him distress.
Secondly, although the business owner said he cared about karate and teaching overall, he mostly cared about his own financial gain. This is particularly evident in the way customers are treated differently based on their purchases(i.e. weapons and equipment) or participation in high-cost private classes. Additionally, there's an issue with how the instructor manages new student inquiries during class time. When potential new students show interest in joining, the instructor often allocates a significant portion of the class time to introduce them to the program and assist with their registration. Meanwhile, existing students are left to practice independently, disrupting the lesson's flow and value. While I understand that the ultimate goal of a business is to generate profit, it's important to balance this with professional conduct and a commitment to quality service. Unfortunately, in this instance, the owner appears to fail to meet these standards.
Lastly, the high student turnover rate seems to reinforce my previous points. We began the program in 2021, and, notably, none of the students who enrolled during the same period have remained. Most have dropped out within several months, indicating a broader issue with the program's environment and management. The only reason my son persisted for so long in the program was his deep passion for karate and his aspiration to become a martial arts master, even though it meant enduring this unpleasant environment.
In conclusion, if you feel your children are resilient enough to handle a toxic environment and are comfortable with the issues mentioned, you might consider enrolling them in this program. However, it's important to weigh these factors carefully before making a decision.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The business owner(instructor) recently read my comments and emailed my wife, stating that our 7-year-old was terrible. I am puzzled by this assessment and would like to inquire how this gentleman has reached this conclusion. Given that we only attend karate classes once or twice a week for 20-40 minutes each session, and he(the instructor) is not always present in the class, I am curious about the basis for his judgment. Furthermore, during our time in the program, he consistently told us that our son was doing well. This contradictory feedback leads me to question the reliability of his evaluations.

This is a "dojo" that places great importance on the spirit of real Japanese ”Budo”(martial arts)
Shihan, Master Don Isaak, teaches all classes by himself and cares about every student.
He encourages motivated students to challenge new things and grow.
My son loves learning karate under Shihan and practice not only in class, but also at home.
He is definitely carrying on the spirit of Japanese "Budo" that he learned from Shihan on a daily basis.

We have been attending since August 2022. My son (now 6) recently got his blue belt. We attend twice a week. Hoping to start attending Fri/Sat too.

I thought we might be enrolling too soon, but the lessons cover complex instruction broken down to smaller simple chunks that the kids can learn with repetitions.
We have been very happy with the skills developed by my son under Shihan's tutelage. He has gone from a typical distracted 5yr old to a focused martial artist! Shihan is great with using positive reinforcement to encourage attention to detail, focused listening and even some lighthearted commentary that fosters community building.

My son looks forward to his Karate/Jujitsu class. Shihan provides guidance for a well rounded Karate student - encouraging the kids to clean their rooms, be responsible, have good manners and even eat Broccoli!

Shihan is a great teacher of Karate and after trying many dojos we have finally found our place. He takes all the classes by himself which works perfectly for the kids as they develop a lifelong bond with other students and Shihan. He also emphasizes vital social skills such as courtesy, kindness and empathy. I have seen my child come home and practice karate in his free play time and repeating words that speak of grace and kindness. Finding this dojo and Shihan has been a blessing for my child.

We enrolled our son in this gym almost a year ago and for awhile things were going great but then as of Monday the attitude changed completely towards us. We informed the teacher that we were moving out of Wake County and he proceeded to call us liars and trust me we are moving. I can described the differences between businesses, my daughters gym was so understanding and offered us a recommendation and then this guy called us a liar. Yes there are a lot of positive reviews and that’s what I went off on but consider the negative reviews because they are very true. He is definitely money hungry and belittles the kids. We had hopes but unfortunately we were let down. How we were treated was so unprofessional. Would not recommend this gym.

We started a few months back and we are SO impressed with the amount of discipline and structure our son has learned from Shihan and his program. He is teaching these kids the top notch from of karate. Our son has done a complete 180 since entering the program. Our son also has ADHD and autism and this program has helped him regulate behaviors in the program and outside of the program. He has become a better listener and more disciplined which is doing wonders for him.
We love that the parents can sit in and watch the transformation. It has helped us as parents better discipline at home. It’s nice to see a teacher/instructor not being afraid to teach the old school way, hold the kids accountable and mold them into the best karate students and fine contributing members of society.
We LOVE this program! Highly recommend!

For the last 3 years, we have been looking for a martial arts program for our (now) 8 year old son, and we have visited MULTIPLE Dojos in the area. None were right for our son until we found Shihan Don's Dojo.

Years ago, I had the honor of studying Ju-Jitsu with a 4th Dan Blackbelt, who knew how to guide & develop truly focused martial artist. When we visited Shihan Don's dojo, I felt a kinship between of Artistry. And the fact that Shihan Don has the patience to teach these children with humor & humility, just proves that he is a great teacher worthy of the title Shihan.

Just 2 weeks of instruction and we are seeing a great change in our son's attention span and listening skills. Teaching a class of rambunctious boys is like trying to herd cats. The way Shihan Don uses repetitive instructions to get the basic techniques ingrained in the beginner's class is inventive and fun to watch. You can tell he really cares for these kids.

As much fun as the beginner's class is, I can't wait for my son to graduate to the intermediate class because I truly believe Shihan Don's style of instructions will give lasting benefits to my son's life.

My 5 YO has been going to Ancient Arts for 3 months now and he loves it. I like the way Mr. Shihan teaches these young kids. They enjoy and learn at the same time. In addition to teaching karate, he also teaches good values which is a plus. My kid likes the class so much, he wants to go there everyday. Best part is that he teaches all his classes himself. I can clearly feel my kid is more confident now. As compared to other schools, even the pricing is reasonable and it’s worth every penny I am spending on the class. We had started with a 6 months contract but looking at my son’s progress, we have happily extended it to 1 year. Mr. Shihan motivates these young kids with his energy and passion. I am delighted to leave Don at Ancient Arts a positive review.
When I came for a trial class I was immediately impressed with Don’s energy, enthusiasm and zest for life! The results speak for themselves; Don is in excellent health and has an abundance of energy and goodwill to offer.

My daughter has attended the dojo for well over a year now. I was motivated to have her study karate so that she might come out of her shell. She did. Don was very patient and attentive to my daughter’s needs as again, she was fairly shy. I was quite pleased with his approach.

Don is passionate about teaching Karate and does not suffer fools. The phrase, ‘Do not mistake my kindness for weakness’ fits. If you intend on dropping your child off as a sort of daycare, this is not the dojo for you. If you are sincere about your child learning karate and developing discipline and confidence in the process, you’ve found a great dojo!

I have only positive feedback for Don. I admire his work ethic, energy and tenacity to ensure the kids are practicing. This world has gone far too soft and I find Don a refreshing blast from the past.

Good business / sales man. We were blown off by the trial lessons, but when it came to talking fees, you see his anger when negotiating. My appointment with him ended with him tearing of the piece of paper he was writing on because i asked for fees negotiation. Don't go with all the positive reviews. Kindly read the negative ones. They are very true

11/5 - Reply to owner's response

With this statement you proved your low credibility - "Very rare that a person wants to pay practically nothing for training"

I only asked to see if you can give me monthly charge you give for 6 months contract for a monthly or 2 months as well. I was also going to , until you did you paper tearing fiasco which you deny now.

BTW, for me my money also important as your. You crib about 30% and all the charges you do, Likewise for me i too work hard to make my money and very penny counts. that is the reason for making the requests, which you don't even have the courtesy to respond in a mature way

Shihan Isaak is cut from a different cloth... and they DEFINITELY do not make that fabric anymore! His extensive 50 year expertise in the ancient art of Karate shines ever so brightly in his thoughtful teaching techniques! He takes pride in himself, his art, his beautiful family and his students! Teaching each class himself, he strives to instill a sense of respect for oneself and their loved ones that is (unfortunately) not seen in today's youth! Each lesson includes not only physical techniques but also a skill set that can be used to strengthen the mind and soul as well! Self-confidence is certainly not something that will be lacking after taking his courses! Respect is definitely a driving factor for all of Shihan Isaak's classes. The students receive valuable life lessons along with language, physiology, physics, biology, nutrition and there is no shortage of good old common sense being served either!!! He pays careful attention to each of his students, getting to know them all personally and keeps his classes light-hearted, good-natured and FUN! I have proudly recommended and will continue to recommend friends to take his courses!!!

My kids love going to this school and have learned a lot of the basics already. And they now answer to adults yes, sir and yes, ma’am!! Because Mr. Don doesn’t just teach karate. He teaches kids manners, making right choices, self respect, self confidence and respect of others. I’ve sat and watched for 2 weeks and I can not recommend his school enough. An amazing dojo to learn Okinawan Karate. Shihan Don Issac teaches kids and adults traditional Okinawan Karate, Shuri Ryu (To transcend from tradition), as well as the core principles that are embodied by the art as well. Teaching classical forms (kata), technique (kihon), and sparring (kumite), as well as traditional Okinawan Ju Jitsu Shihan helps students grow mentally, emotionally, and physically. In past half a year that I have been in this dojo I have grown into a much stronger person. Six months ago I was struggling with severe anxiety. After six months, I still have a long way to go, but I now longer fear standing in front of my class and being a leader. Shihan has also been and amazing role model, he emphasizes that along with daily exercise it is important to maintain a healthy diet. His energy an enthusiasm are contagious, its hard to be stressed worried or depressed when he teaching. He is very caring. He does well to understand and help each student. He understands that some students need a little push to come out and be confident while others need tough love to reign in their energy. He adapts well to each students personality. He is patient and willing to help everyone PROVIDED YOU PRACTICE AND PUT IN EFFORT. Karate at this dojo is not just another thing to add to your resume it is a skill and tool that will help you stay and shape and become stronger mentally. However, to attain this you must put in effort and give it a chance, Shihan will help you at every step. Along with martial arts, this dojo will teach leadership, responsibility, compassion, restraint, discipline, trust, communication, diet, and anatomy. Thank you to Shihan, Instructor Perlin, Mr. Michell, and Ben for everything you all have done over these past six months. I look forward to staying in touch for years to come. For anyone considering this dojo, please come and try Ancient Arts. It is truly an amazing place.

Edit: (January 30th 2019) Many of the reviews speak of character and experience at this dojo. For anyone considering joining I also wanted to provide some information, as well as observations I have made in my time here.
1) I went with the tournament team to the first competition of this year. Our students were strong competitors, each student placing in at least one of the divisions they participated in if not all.
2) One of the amazing things about this dojo is the instructors, and I don't mean just Shihan. All of our instructors as well as assistant instructors are highly experienced. Unlike many schools Shihan does not just allow every blackbelt to become an instructor, they must earn that right. So rest assured that your children will always be learning from skilled and hard working individuals.
3) Lastly. During the competition I saw many talented and skilled competitors. Our students did well for one simple reason. Shihans's efforts to teach forms correctly. Unlike other schools Shihan will not teach advanced forms early on to impress judges, instead he will spend large amounts of time on perfecting basic forms. As irritating as it may seem we all have to learn to walk before we can run. In competition, judges appreciate the attention to detail more than learning "blackbelt" forms.
Overall, some days classes are tough. It can seem repetitive, but it is always fun, and in the end all the work pays off. Not only in medals or belts, but in the growth you make as an individual, in the improvements to your health, in learning a valuable life long skill.

We have finally found an authentic Okinawan style martial arts training school. At this dojo, our child is gaining life-skills like confidence, focus, strength alongwith his self-defence moves, punches and kicks. We are very happy with the training given by his wonderful Shihan, which is builiding great self-discipline and sense of responsibility in my child too.

I had seen a number of martial arts schools in Cary but walking by Ancient Arts Family Karate my initial impression was this was a real dojo and not just a belt mill.

We decided to enroll my son and he has been attending for about 3 months now. When we first started I was skeptical about the and commonly repeated "bad" jokes. However, over time that repetition of jokes and teaching sinks in. The style of teaching by Don becomes clear and the improvement in my son's attention and attitude is apparent.

About a month in Don verbally dressed down my son for lack of attention and fooling around. As a parent I was taken back and it was difficult to see. My instinct was to stop what was happening. However, as I watched my son respond I realized I would have been wrong to do so. Don was not mean, or insulting, he was strict and setting clear expectations for my son. He made clear that to be a student meant you had to bring focus and respect to class. My son responded to that and Don as a teacher could delivery that message in a way a Parent never can.

Last item I want to share is the skill level of Don. When he first shows an arm bar or a take down I was taken back to see my son tossed to the ground. However it is always done with skill and care on Don's part. You can tell by watching he has total control of his actions. Seeing his skill level in action was what made me sign-up. I knew my son would be learning from a true master who never had to buy that title.

This is not pick-up baseball or soccer. This is a hundreds of year old martial arts that will be difficult to learn, physically demanding, and mentally exhausting. However, the rewards is the strength and confidence I see growing in my son every class and outside of it. Don is a hidden gem in Cary offering truly ancient knowledge to students (and parents!) willing to learn.

My 10 year old daughter has been coming here for the past several months. She enjoys the lessons and skills she’s developing. The owner is very knowledgeable and expects the students to respect the art of karate as well as each other and their karate school. This is not a karate school that will “graduate” a student to the next level unless they have demonstrated that they have practiced their skills outside of the class, have shown self discipline, and level appropriate knowledge. While the instructors can be firm, they also possess the ability to show compassion toward students who are genuinely working hard to advance their knowledge. Please understand that this is a serious karate school where the kids and instructors are self motivated and strive to achieve their fullest potential.

I first approached Shihan Isaak 3 years ago. That was when we just moved to our current location, and I was trying to arrange my child's activities during the week. After calling a few dojos and talked to their representatives, I have half made up my mind to join Ancient Arts, 3 years later. Because my kid was only 2 at the time and I thought it's fun to start. Shihan Isaak's honesty woke me up and now, 3 years later, I totally agree and realise he was right. There are many martial arts places that offer toddler classes for them to "play". Those really are just glorified play grounds. Karate takes a lot of work (Knowledge, positive Attitude, Respect, Ability, Technique, Efforts) and more importantly, disciplines, which toddlers aren't quite able to comprehend.

Another thing I think Ancient Arts is superior in Martial Arts field is the owner is also the teacher. Shihan Isaak is an experienced and renowned martial artist, he enhances and reinforces his knowledge, skills, and beliefs to pass on to his students. Because quite often those best intentions of a educator or business founder get lost through the administrators and operators.

My first born started training under Shihan Isaak 2 months ago, I am pleased to see her transforming from disruptive tantrum thrower to a disciplined and confident student who always wants to do better. (I thought she wouldn't be able to persist but Shihan Isaak is fun and patient with young kids.) Hopefully my first born will be able to continue the training for many years, and same for my 2nd child who is still a toddler, in a couple years time.

Our 3 children have gone to Ancient Arts for a few years and we are extremely blessed to have found this place! The owner Don Issak and teacher has a fun, focused and firm teaching approach that works with all ages! The kids are learning martial arts but enjoying the process simultaneously. It is amazing to see their growth, focus and how disciplined they become just from attending this school. Students have opportunities to take on leadership roles! Great opportunity for adults and kids!

My daughter was enrolled in Mr Shihans class for a year. After a year we tried to signed a year contract on March 15 2018. He did us a big favor of giving tax discount so as he always says and we signed contract. Unfortunately/fortunately my wife forgot to write amount on check(signed it). She wrote in letter but not in numbers on check.
So the story begins here,
He called my wife to come and write amount. He tells her that she intentionally leave the amount blank.
She tells him that I did it in front of you. Its honest mistake, He was there to verify and she was there for 5/10 min after she gave check. Why did he did not verify. He still continues that she intentionally did it and blames her.

He asks us to come during the day to fill out check. We have our job can not just leave everything. He insists that we come asap and then tell us for 5 min that he is doing a big favor. Later He is so desperate he offer to come to our home to collect check. I told my wife pay him with credit card. At that point she tell me to talk to him.

I called and talked to Him
Me : Mr Shihan this is Pushpak . XYZ’s dad. Ok.
Teacher: He tells me why do you people do this kind of thing. Means intentionally leaving check field blank. I told him that can I pay by credit card. He say why don’t you come over and settle it in one hour.
ME: I told him I can not come.
Teacher: He is like I did you a big favor and gave you 400$ discount because yesterday was a tax day, I told your wife that its only for yesterday(tax day) blah blah..
Me: I told him I have not denied to pay it.
Teacher: He kept on insulting me and my wife as if we have done a big crime.
Me: After a while I when I got a chance to talk I told him, I don’t want my daughter to join this class. She won’t be joining..
To which he says
Teacher: YOU ARE A LOSER. I said what, he repeats YOU ARE A LOSER. And then more insults.

I asked him when can I come to pick up check,
His response So now you can come to pick up check but not to update it. He kept on blasting.

Then he tells me
Teacher: He will tear off the check. He does not want my daughter in class. HE WILL CALL COPS IF HE SEE’s ME NEAR HIS SCHOOL.
Then he says Good Luck to me as I will need it.
End of Call

Later after 6 min he calls me back

Teacher: He tells me my wife has signed a law abiding contract. And he is happy to have my daughter in his school. He is businessman.
Me: I told him she is no joining.
Teacher: He told me he will pursue lawyers and needed course of action . He once again gave me Good Luck and told me I will need it.

WOW
This is how he runs his school.
I have heard lots of insults directed at students/parents during class.
He praises himself and talks rotten about other classes all the time in class. That other teachers don’t teach themselves blah blah.
There are some underlying anger issues here. I would really avoid ancient arts.
He does not trust any word other people say. It has happened with me , my wife and my friend.
I wasted almost 2 hours of my office time with Mr Shihan and writing this

My son has been enrolled about 2 yrs. Training at this dojo has been a positive experience both in and out of class. My reasons for enrolling him was so he would have structure, train physically, and learn to make good choices. He is naturally shy and timid. Since enrolling he has slowly been coming out of his shell which has been great. He also has a strong desire to eat healthy saying, 'He is in training'. In class, his confidence level has increased. Being on the smaller side and not knowing the techniques being taught on Saturdays (more contact/physical) he was uncomfortable in the beginning. As time went on, he realized he was in a safe environment, learned techniques to defend himself, and sometimes is proud of himself when he is able to help students at a lower level on his own.

I try to attend every class with my son so I know how to help when he practices. Shihan is more than fair and reminds students to practice outside of class. My son understands if he wants to get better at anything, he needs to put the time in to practice. Within reason, I let him decide how to spend his time. He has learned the consequence of not practicing regularly. As someone who has trained in martial arts, I would never put my son in school that was unsafe or did not have quality teaching. After looking at a few in the area, I'm happy the decision to enroll him here and appreciate the traditional teachings.

My son has been learning Karate from Shihan for last 4 years. In the beginning like few other comments we also thought that Shihan was little tough on kids. But as we started to know him better we came to the conclusion that we were wrong about it. He is doing his job as a good teacher. After around 3 months we suddenly saw a change in our son. He started to listen and respect, his grades in school went up and we were so happy to see the change in him. What Shihan does is first he break the child and then built them from bottom up.
I think that is quality of a true teacher. We have tried few other Karate schools in the area too. If you want to pay for your kids to get pampered and get the belts without any efforts then this is definitely not the Karate school for you. But if you want you kid to actually learn Karate and become a good Human being and live a disciplined life then I don’t think there is any better school than this and especially no better teacher than Shihan.
And as far as the fees he is definitely less expensive than other schools in the area. But I don’t think that it should matter (atleast in our case it didn’t) because I want my child to learn from the best.

We are so satisfied with Shihan’s teaching that we enrolled our younger son also with him. And can’t wait to see the change in him (in a better way)

I am in totally in favor of supporting Local small Businesses. And as far as contracts goes, it is there in all the Karate schools. In a way I think it better because both the teacher and the student have a commitment.

In the end all I can say is THANK YOU SHIHAN DON ISAAK for all the hard work you put in the kids to make them a better strong and responsible human beings.
I would recommend this school to anyone and everyone.

My kid is attending Don Sir's classes from the past 1 and half years.
I mostly sit through the classes and pay attention to what sir teaches his students. Here is what I found out about him.

Don Sir is an excellent martial arts teacher. He is humble, down to earth and teaches very good techniques - blocks, punches, kata , falls, kicks, sumo and much more. He also explains the rational and practical application behind the techniques in easy to understand manner. Me sitting across the hall can hear and understand him with clarity.
Also, he teaches in a jolly manner which i find very interesting and is very successful in grabbing the students (and also the parent's) attention.

Further more, he teaches kids good values, tells stories about real life, encourages good behavior, discipline and also tries to teach
kids common sense. I believe this aspect of his is a very good supplementation to what is taught in schools and academics. In fact equally if not more important as it readies the kids for real life.
The kids not only learn self defense, but also good foundations for their future lives to remain rooted to good values.

He is very nice to parents and childrens. Whenever parents enters and if he makes eye contact , he greets them with a - hello Dad !! or hello mom !!
Everybody likes him and he treates every parent and child with equality, respect and jolly greeting.
Traits of an excellent human bieng.

The class does have a contract and it has to be respected. I believe that is the norm here for any service in the united states ranging from
mobile provider to appartment contracts. So nothing new or surprising here.
In fact if you have concerns or request some accommodation, for example you are out of the country for say a month with your child, he does give you an extra month on the current term or next renewal or something that works out for both the sides according to situation.
I found him accommodating and professional regarding the contractual aspect.

He wants his students to practice more at home and perfect their technique and demonstate the same all the time, in classes and in real life. He does keep the bar up and keeps motivating the students by going out of the way.

Many a times, he catches up for a friendly chat with parents. He even recommended me some good books if you want to know more about karate.
I'll print them out for your benefit: :
1)Karate-dō : my way of life Book by Gichin Funakoshi
2)The weaponless warriors Book by Richard E. Kim
I'm reading the first book which is an excellent read for anyone interested.
There are countless more good things out there and if you are interested and ask him, he is always ready to share his knowledge.

This class is definitely recommended and is a very good investment you can do for your kids or even yourself.
I do see a lot of dads enrolled and they work out and learn the techniques with their kids.
Students who train under him and who live in the area near the dojo are fortunate to have found a good hearted and knowledgeable trainer like himself.
A very hard working teacher for his students. Knows every student by their name , understands and improves their abilities and pays attention to each of his students. Develops good bonding with them.
He teaches all the classes himself.

Five stars from me.
Keep doing the good work Don Sir.

Wise, fair, funny and welcoming are the words that I feel confident using when describing this dojo and the professional training illustrated by Shihan (owner: Don Isaak).

Shihan will be the first to acknowledge that this dojo is not a daycare and I agree 100%. The children (my son, Leo for example) are taught respect, with a healthy dose of discipline. This is not taught in a cruel or mocking manner. Shihan uses fair, empathetic practices with added humor, which I have always seen go over very well with the children.

Shihan's disposition and mentality has a trickle down effect in the Ancient Arts dojo as all of the students go out of their way in welcoming incoming students. There is a strong, inclusive family feeling within this dojo and I have been to a few others, so I can judge this relatively well, removed from any assumed bias.

My son, Leo and I have been attending this dojo for over two months. We love it!

I encourage anyone that is interested in martial arts to try this school. If you're not afraid of a little hard work with a rewarding return, this is your place.

If you want to learn at an authentic karate dojo and be taught from one of the best with over 45 years in the business then this is the place for you. I have been training with Shihan for almost 6 years and I would not be who I am today without his teachings, his ethical code, his moral compass and his friendship.

Instead of those cookie cutter schools with no lineage or historical foundation drop by and see for yourself. I know Shihan would love to meet you and talk about Karate and his programs.

The owner is very accommodating to the students and is very passionate about his teaching and wanting his students to thrive. Don has been in this business for many years. I don't blame him for cancelling students if the parents do not pay. If you don't pay your bills, house payment, electric, car. The bank will take them from you or your electric will be shut off. Don't expect things for free. I am sure if you have a job that you don't expect to go to work and not receive a check. Come on people. Be respectful.

I had enrolled my son here for more than 6 months now and if it’s not me it was my wife watching the classes. I can see a clearly improvement on my son ( concentration, behavior, sense of duty, hard work, oh and karate :-) ).I used to train martial arts too in my young days and I can say it for sure that I looked for a lot of places that still teach in a old school style with bushido. It’s a good place to be if you are looking for an old style karate dojo.

I have spent the majority of my adolescence and now young adulthood at Ancient Arts, and the personal growth and professional skills I have obtained at this school have been invaluable to me. I am sure Shihan can attest to this as well: I have grown up at this dojo. I have become more confident, developed strong bonds, grown as a leader, and learned how to teach. I have gained self-discipline, a drive to better myself, and the tenacity to never give up. Shihan Isaak is an artist truly dedicated to his craft, and it is immediately apparent to anybody walking into the school how much he cares about his students and the quality of his instruction. I'm a father of two daughters, and we've been beyond delighted with our year- and counting- at Ancient Arts. We shopped around and were disappointed in many of the local schools that felt like cookie cutter replicas of each other, selling a simplified version of martial arts. When I met with Shihan Isaak I knew we had a winner, and 12 months later I am more a believer than ever. Shihan teaches old school karate; during the week the focus is on form building, and there are grappling and sparring classes on Saturdays, so students get both form and functional practice. Logistically, his prices are lower than most in the area, the quality of instruction is very high, the cost for peripherals like headgear is super low, and class start times can fit most any schedule. These are all measurables on the plus side of the cost/benefit calculation.

But the key to deciding whether Ancient Arts is right for you or your child is less concrete. It is being clear about what you are coming to the dojo hoping to get and what you are prepared to give; because you will not succeed at Ancient Arts if you are not prepared to give effort as well as receive knowledge. Shihan teaches top flight martial arts as evidenced by his deep and highly awarded resume, but what differentiates Ancient Arts is that he is driven to improve his students beyond the simple execution of motions. Shihan teaches respect and discipline, and tries to make clear the connection between hard work and success. In too many aspects of modern life we, and especially children, are rewarded for simply showing up. Shihan holds students accountable to know what to do, or to speak up and ask for help, and he expects that the student will give best efforts both at the dojo and at home- which means that you may need to encourage your children- or yourself!- to practice until self-directed practice becomes a habit. This is why being prepared to give effort is important, and you should enter this school with that expectation.

In a nutshell, and as with most relationship based decisions, identifying the right dojo is a question of FIT.

If you want a dojo and instructor that will be a babysitter, this is not the school for you. If you want a dojo that will make you or your children feel good even when you expend no effort, this is not the school for you. And if you or your child don't feel excited about coming to the dojo and challenging yourself, this is not the school for you.

But...if you want an instructor who will set high expectations and hold you to them, while encouraging you every step of the way, who shows every day that his primary goal is the success of his students, who gives best efforts and high energy every day, and who is an unquestioned master at his trade, then this is the school for you.

And if you want your children to start showing you respect by saying 'yes sir/yes ma'am' and to start showing respect to the house by turning off the lights and picking up the messes, and if you want them to learn that hard work does pay off and that rewards EARNED feel viscerally different than rewards granted, then this is the school for you.

And if you look forward to your child walking around with greater confidence and looking people in the eye and speaking up with confidence and respect, and if you enjoy the idea of not worrying quite so much about whether they are able to take care of themselves in potentially threatening situations that might arise, then this is the school for you.

My son has been going go Ancient Arts Karate for about 2 months now, and still really likes it! He is six years old and has tried basketball and soccer in the past and has not been able to focus enough to really get anything out of it. He also dreaded going to soccer and basketball after a few sessions. In this karate program my son recently tested for and received his first earned belt (yellow). I appreciate the concept of accountability that Shihan Isaak demonstrates during his classes. I want my kids to understand that you must work hard to get what you want in life and that it feels good to work, earn and strive to be better. This program really supports that view. Kids are engaged the entire class and not only learn karate, but about living a positive life. I'm not sure how he does it, but the owner teaches all of the classes himself! The owner even hosted a free birthday party for my son just a month after joining, which turned out great :)

Nothing short of exceptional, Don Isaak's training at Ancient Arts Family Karate / Ju Jitsu Academy has been a positive influence in my son's life. He loves being there and thrives under Shihan's instruction. Eager to attend class, I have seen him work hard, respond to instruction and push himself to be stronger and more powerful, in both body and mind.

Don Issak is teaching more than technique and form, he's sharing life lessons which regularly impact my son, including teaching him about self defense, self discipline, respect, courtesy, hard work, moving with a purpose, exercise and healthy eating.

To quote my son, "I learned how to focus and stay on task instead of lazing off and doing what I want to do. I'm more cautious and pay attention to the world around me. Shihan is serious but very, very funny."

Yesterday, we hosted my son's 8th birthday at his dojo, where he celebrated with his friends AND got to cut his cake with Shihan's samurai sword!

Ancient Arts Family Karate/Ju-Jitsu Academy - This place is awesome. It builds incredible confidence for kids while teaching them discipline, respect and awareness of themselves and the world around them. Teaching kids on how to use their Strength and skill as self-defense only when needed and walking away from unnecessary confrontations.

Mr. Don Isaak does a great job running this place and his teaching methods are great. He has compiled a training document in the form of readable and audio video format thru YouTube channel which helps kids to practice in their free time. It’s like a virtual trainer at home. Personally my kid has grown in confidence and has become active mentally and physically.

I strongly recommend Ancient Arts Family Karate/Ju-Jitsu Academy to all parents, a place where their kids are instilled with a sense of self confidence, discipline and physical training. They get molded into being better people with good self-esteem.

Kudos to Mr. Don for starting this institute and keeping the standards very high.

I have entrusted Shihan Don Isaak with my prize possession which is my teenage son. He has not let me down. Not only is he a great teacher, but he is also a great role model as well as friend. My son benefits on so many levels such as fitness, discipline, social interaction, increase focus, improved self-esteem and lets not forget self-defense. Shihan as he likes to be called by his students, gives off a sense of family by welcoming his students by name (a personal touch that has been forgotten by many schools). He also interacts with his students in a warm and friendly way as only a great mentor can by joking and "keeping it real".. His teaching style is friendly, but firm when it needs to be. He has been teaching martial arts over 43 years and I can tell you that he not only knows his art, but equally important knows how to reach today's children as well as adults. I would highly recommend you look into his school for yourself before making a final decision for a great quality and safe school to enroll your prize possessions, your children. I give him at least a 5 star and would give him more if there was a higher rating. Keep up the great work!

My family and I have been at this dojo for over 3 years now and continue to grow and learn with each class.

The fees are very reasonable compared to other martial arts schools in the area.

Shuri-Ryu karate is a complete system with Okinawan and Chinese martial arts roots. When you train regularly in this art, you learn self-defense and get an exceptional workout to keep you physically fit too.

Our instructor has 40 years of experience practicing and teaching karate and has been inducted into the Living Legends Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement and was named "Master of the Year" (2011) by the American Martial Arts Alliance.

The Ancient Arts Family Karate dojo is an outstanding program and value, and master Don Isaak, is an excellent instructor!
