The Base ladies are truly the best! Such a knowledgable, welcoming, non-judgemental community of fun people. Love their mat classes, have had an amazing experience with private training, and just wrapped a 4-week Centered and Strong series that helped me feel stronger on the reformer. Couldn't recommend the people or the vibes any higher!

Movement hasn’t been easy for me lately. But at Base, it finally feels like something I get to do—not something I have to fight through.
I first tried Base a year or two ago after my acupuncturist insisted I try a class with Sarah. I took a handful of mat classes with her and liked them. But I had just joined OrangeTheory, and couldn’t swing the extra cost.
Then last May, out of nowhere, exercise-induced panic attacks returned. OTF’s pace and overstimulation made it harder to show up and fed a growing cycle of anxiety. I knew I needed something different, but was feeling uninspired.
As if the universe (or let’s be real, the algorithm) was sending me exactly what I needed to snap out of this funk, I saw that Base was offering a special July pack—30 reformer classes, good for a whole year. I jumped on it.
I treated this first week as an experiment—trying different instructors, formats, and times to rebuild momentum and see what felt right in my body. I wasn’t sure how it would go, but the ease was immediate. It felt less like starting over and more like returning to something I didn’t know I missed.
Base is more than a local studio—it’s a community. A space where everyone, from instructors to longtime regulars, carries a sense of shared generosity and presence. It’s welcoming, nonjudgmental, and beautifully human.
I’m also a bit of a learning design/pedagogy nerd. One thing that really stands out is how strong and distinct each instructor’s teaching style is. All three (Sarah, Stella, Adeline) strike a rare balance of honoring their students’ comfort “edges” while making astute, intuitive nudges when they notice you can challenge yourself a little more deeply.
Most of my classes have been with Sarah, and every single time I leave with some new insight about my body. She has the deep-cuts body expertise I’d expect from a seasoned physical therapist, but brings it to class with a gracious, disarming warmth and humor that instantly puts everyone at ease. Her cues are clear and her analogies vivid (and often hilarious). I’ve struggled with embodiment my whole life—Sarah’s classes surprise and delight me by deepening my curiosity about what my body can do. Major bonus, her comedic timing is *elite*.
Adeline’s classes are a quiet revelation. Her presence is calm and grounded, and her voice is so soothing that the class is meditative. I left feeling centered and strong, and also like I’d been through a time warp—we got so much done in such a short time! Her gentleness is its own kind of magic—you don’t realize how hard you’re working until it’s almost over.
I’ve only had one class with Stella, but it stood out. Like her colleagues, she’s incredibly skilled at explaining subtle details about how to move your body—one small adjustment and suddenly everything clicks. It was in her class that I felt the strongest sense of mastery and accomplishment (and sweat the most, ha) so far at Base, like: YES, I can do hard things. She brings a quiet confidence to the room that feels contagious. There’s something about her that makes you feel like you can push yourself and she’s gonna cheer you on while also having your back. She’s serenely tough; while this could be intimidating in someone else, with Stella, it’s steadying and connective. I loved being in her class.
So far, my favorite reformer formats have been PE, Circuit, and Pop-Up. Each one offers something different, and they all complement each other well. I’ll definitely be mixing in more mat classes again!
Base Moves is more than just a great workout. Right now, it’s given me a way back into my body—and into a kind of community I’ve really needed. For that, I’m beyond grateful, and I can’t wait to keep showing up. I hope this small business stays around for the long haul, so please try it out if you haven’t taken the leap. The hype is real.

Regardless of who you take a class with, you know it’s going to be a great workout. All three instructors deliver an opportunity for intentional movement while providing a great workout. Love the place and highly recommend!

I stopped in for a class and was thrilled with everything. I take a contemporary style of Pilates in my hometown and was thinking I found the right place when I read about Base Moves online. When I arrived (early, but apparently that’s not needed) I found the studio and the area for everything pre/post workout. One of the co-owners and teachers Sara was there and very friendly. She has more than 30 years of teaching Pilates and I felt very confident in taking her class.
The class itself is amazing. I took something I think called Shape in which many different moves, some advanced, were combined to deliver a real total body workout in under 50 minutes! Sara explained moves really well and it was clearly a thoughtful routine to achieve a whole circuit for the body.
If I come back to Durham and near this studio again, I’d come back in a heartbeat.

Loved my jump board class at this studio! The instructor was friendly and engaging. The class was challenging, but flew by so quickly. Would definitely come back to this studio when I’m in the area

I am so glad I found Base Moves! My friend introduced me to the space last summer. Stella, Adeline, and Sarah are all wonderful humans and instructors. Each one adds their own elements to their class making it challenging yet fun. I work as a nurse so the online classes are a great way to supplement when I am not able to make it to an in person class. Glad I found this beautiful space!

I have nothing but amazing things to say about Base Moves, all three instructors (Sarah, Adeline, and Stella), and the studio space. I have tried a lot of different fitness gyms and programs, and this is the one that I now call home! They offer a great variety of types of classes (some more focused on breathing and form, others more focused on cardio and reps, etc.) and times for classes. The space is beautiful, clean, and bright. The instructors each have their own style and are so knowledgeable, non judgmental, kind, and just wonderful human beings. I not only really enjoy the classes but I also have learned a ton about my body. They are really great about accommodating skill levels and suggestions for alternatives if you have injuries, chronic pain, etc. They also have a great little corner of their studio to buy cute workout clothes, exercise equipment (e.g., bands, free weights), drinks, and snacks at a reasonable price.

This is the number one thing I have missed since moving out of the Durham area! It is a small studio with only 5 reformers, and Sarah and team have created an intimate and fun environment to work out in. I loved the Pilatecize and PE classes, but you can't wrong with Shape or Mat either. The other people who attend class are all extremely nice and fun to chat with. Sarah and Adeline took the time to learn my name and I felt both respected me as an individual when I came into class. They were genuinely invested in my well being and the well being of everyone in the class! I never took a class with Stella, but have heard great things about her as well. Can't recommend Base highly enough, this is a great team and studio, I only wish there were more reformers to spread the joy with more people!! I absolutely cannot wait to come back and visit them soon and take some more classes.

This is the best place in the Triangle for Pilates. The classes are reasonably priced and the instruction is expert. All levels are welcome and encouraged -- from beginners to pros. Warning: the classes are addictive!

How much do I love Base? Let me count the ways...oh wait, I'd be counting forever. But seriously, I've been a student of Base for about 3 years (both digitally and in-person - big shoutout to BaseTV) and it's been one of the best things I've done for myself - body & mind. Base is encouraging, non-judgmental and diverse with calm, cool vibes for days. Sarah, Stella, and Adeline have created a safe and energizing space that I'm a proud #fangirl of.

Sarah, Stella and Adeline are Pilates gods. I hated working out until I started taking their classes many years ago. They each have their own distinct teaching style and provide a wonderful range of classes. Their positive and welcoming energy will make any student feel comfortable, and they genuinely care about people’s well-being. Plus, they have great taste in music and carry some really fun gear if you (like me) are into that. Best place to work out in the Triangle.

I love everything about Base. I was looking for high quality instruction, a warm and community-oriented vibe, and a place that was taking Covid safety precautions. I found everything and more at Base taking classes with Sarah, Adeline and Stella when I first started over the summer. They are amazing, knowledgeable, and incredibly welcoming of all humans. I feel seen, taken care of, and challenged in class. The new studio is gorgeous and I love taking class in there with their great music selections! Base feels like home. I also feel better in my body than I have in years because of their instruction.

Sarah, Stella, and Adeline are definitely the GOATs of Pilates instruction 🐐🐐🐐 I’ve been going to base for the past 6 months and the classes there have been truly life changing. In addition to being a great holistic form of exercise, the environment at base is always kind and welcoming.

I started going to Base Pilates after being diagnosed with a rheumatic issue. This was my first pilates experience and I am happy to say the teachers are friendly and knowledgable, there are students of all ages, multiple class 'levels' and the vibe is very chill. Bonus: everyone is wearing a mask and it feels Covid safe. I'm very glad I found this location that is laid back and supportive to meet my laid back ways.

I've been part of the Base tribe for more than 3 years and could not be happier! Sarah, Adeline and Stella are not only the best instructors EVER, they have become my people!! They have created an environment where everyone feels comfortable, welcomed & loved no matter your level of experience with pilates or even if you've just had a bad day. The new space is beautiful providing loads of sunlight. I have reconnected with old friends and made many new. I could go on and on, just go experience for yourself; you will not be disappointed!!!

basetv online instruction is amazing quality! I joined Base Durham's program in January 2021 to try something new and it has been the best thing I have done for myself in years. As a 52 year old runner, my body needs care and strength work to avoid injury and keep moving. basetv is perfect. I am stronger, my running form has improved, I even fit in clothes better. Instructors know how to bring you to the point of challenge without overdoing it. There are full classes, short pops to fit in your day or add to what you are already doing. I have tried many online workout programs (alo yoga, daily burn, facebook streaming classes, apps) and basetv is the BEST BY FAR. Three different instructors who compliment each other while providing you with variety. Great video quality. It is so well done. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

I've been going to Base since I moved to Durham 3 years ago. I've met so. many new friends there, and also learned so much about my body and movement from Sarah, Stella, and Adeline. There's always a class to suit my mood whether I'm feeling high energy (platinize) or want to focus more on technique (shape). I think it's the best place to work out in the Triangle.

I've been going to Base Pilates and Movement for years now and I absolutely love it. They offer a wide range of options, from personal training, to group classes, to online classes, so it's easy to find just what you need. Adeline, Sarah, and Stella are experts at what they do, and they've created an encouraging, supportive environment that makes it easy to stay motivated. Depending on my schedule I can switch between in-person classes or their BaseTV content, but whatever I do I know they'll have put their heart and soul into what they've created, and added some great music to boot. The personal touches and great care they bring to every class they offer sets them apart from anything else I've tried. I really think everyone can find what they need here at Base.

Adeline is an incredible pilates instructor and an overall phenomenal human being. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND her, especially if you are living with chronic back pain.
I started going to Adeline six years ago. I had a failed back surgery and was in a lot of pain. As a former athlete, I was insecure about starting pilates in the shape I was in, but Adeline was so kind and immediately put me at ease. After several weeks, I started to notice such a difference in my posture and core strength. Working with her helped my back pain a lot.
Adeline has taught me much more than pilates. She has taught me how to be present in my body again- how to breathe, walk and keep my core activated throughout my day. She is so knowledgeable about the human body and movement.
It has been six years since our first session, and I continue to see Adeline. She helped me through pregnancy and recover from a different surgery. Working with her has been a true investment in my health and in turn, the health of my family. I even grew 1/2 an inch taller at the doctor's office. I can't thank her enough for everything she has done for me!
