Nightmare- no one at the gym is able to do anything to fix errors in payments. you will be charged the wrong amount and unable to cancel due to then using a 3rd party payment system and absolutely no one at the gym being able to do anything to fix any issues in the system. You'll be just be told over and over "Hey yeah man I totally get your frustration" like some bad Andy Elliot sales bro acid trip. Seriously consider before signing up if you want to deal with headaches.

I joined Fit4Life in October after my son told me about their new equipment and invited me to workout. The gym is now available 24 hours.
The staff and gym members are really nice. It’s a great place for a workout.

Please get your door fixed. Theirs is no point in being advertising 24/7 if the door is broken every week and we cannot get in.

Overall I love the changes the new owners have done with the place

For the third time now I am unable to get into the gym with 24 hour access. Upon arrival today several other people were outside attempting to scan in and unable to get in.
I arrived a the gym at approximately 5 am and needed to leave for a work trip by 6 am. Instead I will not be working out today and wasted a 15 minute drive in.
I try to not be the person to leave bad reviews as I do think improvements were made to the equipment and space however in order to use the equipment I do need access to it. It’s one thing if this was just a one time thing however this has been 3 times for me and the second in the last 10 days. Very disappointed.

Once again the door won't open, leaving a crowd outside shivering. Despite many emails (and not a single reply) the gym management hasn't fixed this problem. They installed the door in September!

Fit4Life Fitness in Durham has been a game-changer for me. The energy in this gym is unmatched—motivating, positive, and community-driven. The facility is always clean, the equipment is well-maintained, and there’s a great mix of machines and free weights for every level of training.

The staff goes above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome. Trainers genuinely care about your progress and are always available to offer guidance or encouragement. You can tell they’re passionate about helping people reach their goals, whether it’s weight loss, strength training, or overall wellness.

What I love most is the atmosphere—no judgment, just good vibes and people pushing each other to improve. The 24/7 access is perfect for busy schedules, and the membership options are very reasonable for the quality you get.

If you’re in the Durham area and looking for a gym that actually feels like a community, Fit4Life Fitness is the spot. You’ll leave every workout feeling stronger, motivated, and supported.

Update: I have really enjoyed being able to lift late at night due to the extended hours. Because of that, I've updated the rating to 4/5.

I have had a very poor experience during the transition between Fuel Fitness and Fit4Life. First of all, my app is not working so I cannot access the gym at all. Second, I've called and visited multiple times during staffed hours and no one was available. Next, I noticed three separate charges to my account that I did not authorize. Lastly, they charged a non-negotiable one time fee for preexisting members.

I really loved Fuel Fitness and found the staff and trainers to be knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful.

That said, I have been trying to cancel my membership since the transition to Fit4Life since September and have in writing via email my request to cancel (not to mention multiple phone calls and in person visits) where I am told different information each time of what I need to do, when in my contract from Fuel, I was told to give 30 days notice in writing. I also never signed any paperwork with Fit4Life, nor did I agree to continue or switch my membership.

I have spent HOURS just trying to cancel a membership for a gym I can no longer attend due to moving.

I was told I also would continue to be charged for yet another month when I called again a 6th time yesterday to try to verify that my account had been canceled, and for some reason my request to cancel my membership is not being honored and I am told to give 30 days notice again— all when I have in writing from September the original request that has gotten ignored. It’s beyond disappointing, frustrating, and not to mention illegal.

I can understand confusion when a company switches or is acquired, but to get the runaround for 2 months is unacceptable.

Conversion from Fuel Fitness is chaotic. Former employees not aware of how to transfer folks to the new company and were frustrated. They were kind, just uninformed. We get an email that we can come in and anyone can help us convert. Unfortunately, that statement was not true. I went in an the folks working at that time were unaware of how to transfer. They were kind, just uninformed. Today I was pleasantly surprised when there was a person present for those of us who work out early who was well informed, answered questions and got things transferred. Because I had a special situation that involves adding on people since the plan I had no longer exists I was told to come back to add people. It was explained what needed to be done and it seemed to be pretty simple. Again, a very pleasant conversation with someone who was mostly informed. Then I meet the part owner/general manager who already seemed to be overwhelmed and defensive. I began to explain what I needed and shared what I had been told by other employees and he states that I was told the wrong information and wanted to know who I spoke with. He then proceeds to accuse me of being defensive and confrontational for no reason and not allowing him to speak. Look, I get it that perhaps the transition was not like it was for other clubs, however, I'm a client at this club and there is chaos. My first impression of the new owners should not be someone who is automatically defensive and confrontational. What happened to "I understand how confusing things can be, how may I make this easier for you?" You don't put the blame on the other company even if it is their fault. Clients don't care whose fault it is, we just need to be treated with respect and empathy. I didnt get that from the general manager. Not sure if I will keep my membership or not; if I don't ever have to deal with that general manager again, maybe.

Update: I'm staying only because of the local staff. Christina is amazing!

UPDATE
9-6-25 Fuel Fitness was sold to yet another company who has appeared to finally purchase new equipment but had to close the gym for 4 days. Members were sent an email Thursday evening, informing us that the gym will be closed until Tuesday, with no mention of prorating our membership for the month of September. This is the first time hearing that the gym was sold. I don't understand why communication with their community seems to be such a struggle. Not sure if the new owners are aware of the diversity of members who frequent the gym but sure looked like a lot of weight machines. My two year membership ends soon. I should have enough time to see what the new owners are like before making a final decision.
_______________________________________________________________

Was a member of the old gym and will not be renewing again. It does not seem to be a business that is being taken care of. I am paying double the price than I did when it was Fitness World, using the same old machines. People rest on all the weight machines which hinders completing your workout in a timely fashion. Personal trainers talk so loudly they interrupt my workout even with headsets up. There continues to be a lack of AC or ventilation, especially as we move into the warmer months.Paying a yearly membership on top of a monthly fee is wrong when they do so little to keep the facility up. And the fee keeps climbing up.

The equipment is 20 years old nd in pretty bad shape. I must say that I joined for the senior fitness class which is now only given at 10:30, they droped one class. If you want to take another class, you have to up your membership and pay more. I never thought I would say this but...planet fitness is a far better choice.

I do not recommend this gym. I have been on a membership with this gym for a year and two months. The way they communicated with me is not “I’m here to help you achieve your health goal,” but rather “I’m just doing things following the rules in the contract you signed.” This is not the kind of customer-business relationship I look for. BTW: facilities are old and no pool. The two stars are for some experience instructors, or I would do one star.

Policies are not clear. Staff will tell you differing information and then add charges. It is difficult and costly to end membership, even after 1 year commitment has been fufilled. Yearly maintence fee is charged but equipment is not updated. Think twice before joining.

Worst gym experience ever. I cannot bring my 8 year old to play basketball in the court when there was no one there. There was a policy said kid under 13 can only be in the kids room. If kids is not allowed to go to weight room I can understand. But basketball court ? My son is playing basketball since 6 I haven’t never heard any gym or basketball court (indoor or outdoor) has an age limitation. I was expressing the concerns with the team and would like those concern to be heard by management team. And I was told no and they only here re-enforce the policy. A commercial gym doesn’t want expand business or hear customers concern is such a disappointment.

I’ve been a member at this gym for a little over a year now. The location is super convenient, and I’d be lying if I said there weren’t a few standout people here who make the place more enjoyable—Allison and the gentleman who cleans during the night shift (who, quite frankly, is friendlier and more helpful than some of the Helpdesk staff) they deserve the biggest raise. It's a shame that the friendliness doesn’t seem to be a consistent requirement for working the front desk, as some are either on their phones on calls while customers are waiting for their attention or casually working out while on shift. I suppose multitasking is in nowadays.
The monthly price ($52) is fair. However, for what you get, it’s starting to feel like you’re paying more for potential than actual quality. A few machines were recently reupholstered—which was nice—but considering how long they were left ripped and worn out, it felt a little overdue. Several machines are still broken, and cables are often unusable. Also, the AC was out for months, which was... fun during all summer.
One of the more frustrating aspects has been the inconsistency in communication. When I first signed up, I was told my membership wouldn’t auto-renew and that I’d need to come in and pay in person. Turns out, that wasn’t true. When I tried to cancel due to working and going to school full-time, I was still charged for the following month—even though I officially cancelled on April 3rd after couple calls trying to cancel. Apparently, there's a 30-day cancellation policy that no one mentioned until it was too late. So yes, I was still allowed to go in May... because I’m being charged for it. How thoughtful.
The website is also confusing. I joined partly because I believed this location had a pool (important to me while recovering from knee surgery). The site listed amenities for the entire chain, not this specific gym. I even asked about it on day one, having noticed the pool wasn’t on-site. Couple weeks later when I was assigned pool exercises I found out there was not pool and I brought up the misleading information, I had a very tense exchange with someone I believe was the manager (Chris?). Let’s just say it didn’t go well. He raised his voice at me while I was simply trying to clarify how the website was misleading, obviously, that day I was offer a 5 or 10$ discount for the next month, I do not remember the amount. Later, I found out I was being blamed for the misunderstanding due to a supposed language barrier (according to a friend who happened to be there that day near the desk). Not exactly the response I expected. I asked about downgrading my membership, but the fee to do that was more expensive than just staying locked in.
To be fair, a few great staff members truly improved parts of my experience. But between broken equipment, confusing policies, poor communication, and a management team that doesn’t seem open to feedback, I can’t justify more than one star.

I didn’t live out the term of this gym’s membership due to the number of equipment and machines that cycled through out of order signs. The equipment in use was rusty, old and outdated. The spray bottles and paper towels were limited, empty or unavailable. Wiping down equipment after use didn’t seem to be a common practice. The one yoga class I attended started late and I was adjusted in every pose. The instructor laughed about how nit picky he was and tested my skill level in a patronizing way.

This gym does not upkeep the property. The equipment is always broken and outdated. They don’t have heat, hence the reason why I haven’t been since the end of January. This gym is the gold standard for an overpriced garbage dump of a facility. The fact they charge as much as they do for 50 year old broken equipment to use is robbery. Oh yeah, I'm sure in the reply from Fuel that everything is fixed now. Great, so all the time prior you guy were cool with ripping people off. Current and previous members should get a refund of sorts. The gym does not uphold their end of your user agreement and I believe this could be a mass tort suit.

Updated review:
Gym has started replacing worn vinyl on benches! Sauna was broken for over a month, but it is now repaired. All new paper towels and soap dispensers across the gym. I'm raising my review to 3 stars and will update if I see progress or regression.
--
Facility and equipment is okay, but it's poorly maintained. The bench in the men's sauna broke, was poorly repaired, and now is broken again. The steam room has been broken and out of service all week. The showers and shower curtains always have mildew. The vinyl on the benches and equipment is torn. It always smells a little funky. If everything was in good working order it would be a solid gym.

I wish I had read a few of the one-star reviews before joining this gym. Unfortunately, they are all very true. The fact that they charge what they do monthly is simply ridiculous. The gym is filled with old and falling-apart Nautilus machines and broken machines that are constantly in need of maintenance. The paper towel dispensers never work. People don’t wipe down the machines because the spray bottles don’t work. 🤮 It’s like a gym in a homeless shelter. I’m not a fan of Planet Fitness, but they are about 100 times better for a fraction of the cost. I never thought I would find a gym that I hated so much.

I go because it's close to home, and it WAS a well kept gym. But recently, lots of machines are broken and not fixed promptly. And the leather is cracking on most seats.
Update 12/17/24: This week, out of 13 treadmills, SEVEN are broken! And many other machines are broken too. I'm sad, because it used to be a nice gym. But it seems like the current owner is not invested in upkeep.
Update 12/23/24: Many of the machines were finally fixed this week! Waiting to see if this is the beginning of an improving trend....
Update 3/25/25: They've brought in treadmills from another site that closed to replace broken ones. So now almost all are usually working. And they finally replaced all of the torn leather on machines. So no more damaged clothing or skin! This has made it a better experience.

Be careful when discontinuing membership. I called them a month prior from my membership ending I asked to terminate my membership. I was told that I would be charged, just to have them charge me a membership fee and annual fee. I spoke with the manager and explained to them I canceled over the phone. I was then told I should have filled a cancelation form. I wasn't advised about any form. Long story short. I have to wait 5 days for the membership fee to be returned and will be charged for a month of gym time I will most likely not even be able to attend.

02-01-2025: Leaving a negative review in the hopes that it will push management to fix the many recent issues, most of which focus on broken equipment and general disrepair. (Sort reviews by new/recent and you will find several related complaints)

The vinyl is torn and peeling on several machines. The pulleys, treadmills, stair steppers, and sauna are regularly out of order. 3/4 theraguns are broken and the 4th is on its way out. There is also section of broken and caved in drywall which has not yet been fixed.

Management! Please make some changes.

Fuel Fitness is hands down one of the best gyms I've ever been to! The facilities are top-notch, and the overall vibe is welcoming and motivating. But what truly sets this gym apart are the trainers, especially Allison. Been a consistent gym member here since around the time ownership has changed hands. Firstly, location is great, staff is very friendly and the price is fair, but for the past year or so maintenance and upkeep of the gym equipment is seriously lacking. Treadmills are abundantly "out of order", upholstery for many machines are ripped and torn and some cable machines are frequently broken and unusable. With the current ownership I have not seen significant moves towards the upkeep of this gym as of lately. This is an emerging issue that needs to be addressed.

DO NOT PURCHASE A MEMBERSHIP HERE. AC/Heat has been broken for over a year. Several TV’s have been broken as well for roughly the same amount of time. Dirty, old, worn machines and pads. Frequent broken equipment. Today alone I noticed 10 treadmills “out of service”. No paper towels to sanitize machinery! They upped my membership two months ago without notifying me. I was told the annual fee’s I paid were used for the general maintenance and upkeep of the gym… that is an absolute lie. I’ve worked out here for seven years. I was fine with the older equipment for the cheap membership but this place is falling apart because of its new management. Not a gym for women/new mothers. I got a trial week membership. During that week, I worked out nearly every day bringing my baby. My baby is young and I either had him in his little carrying pack —strapped my body or sitting on a yoga mat that I brought from home. I was careful to always position us far away from others, not be anyone’s way, not disturb anyone. I Kept my baby at hand very close to me and out of harms way. Not once during the trial period was I told by any employee or staff member or even a patron that there was a rule preventing this.
I had just finished doing air squats while holding the baby and was seated with him in my lap when I was told by a staff member that I would have to give him over to whatever staff was in the children’s room. My baby is my most precious thing in the world to me. I was of course, was exceptionally careful that he was not exposed to any potential harm. He was quiet, close to me and kept safe. I’m certainly not going to hand him to a stranger in a room that I can’t see into. I’m upset that after a week of working out there with him it was only after I signed up for membership that an employee I had seen almost every day told me for the first time that we weren’t welcome. Give poor women who are trying to get back into shape after having a baby a chance, you can do better. This is not the gym for you.

TLDR get a membership somewhere else if you're shopping for one.

Been a member here for over 8 years. The AC, sauna, pulleys, sinks, toilets, machines, and other miscellaneous equipment are CONSTANTLY broken. Yall, nothing works when you need it.

My personal reasons for remaining a member are pretty much limited to the sauna bc it was previously the best bang for your buck in the triangle. However, the men's sauna has been broken for at least half of 2024. They keep throwing half-baked, bandaid-esque fixes at it and expect a lone and presumably undertrained, underequipped and overworked maintenance person to handle the neverending repairs. The same can be said for the rest of their issues. It's absolutely pointless and financially irresponsible. There's no way that having a professional fix things correctly one time is more expensive than indefinite biweekly repairs.

It is inexcusable and hard to believe that management has the gall to increase rates all while the situation above worsens over time. Somehow shrinkflation managed to find it's way into the fitness world.

Overall, this facility is fairly decent. It’s pretty large and has a good quantity and variety of equipment. However, walking in here I felt like I was in a time warp going into a fitness center back in the 80s or 90s. It looks pretty old and outdated with no new or modern equipment. For my money, I’d much rather join the Gold’s Gym down the road.

I joined this gym for the summer and it was great. It is clean, well-equipped and maintained, and good for those of any age and gym experience level. The front desk staff are very friendly, especially Dakota, and always make sure you are taken care of. The only downside is that some the machines are a bit outdated and have some wear to them, but not to the point where it would prevent you from using them comfortably. I would not pay much mind to the recent review mentioning air conditioning, it is NOT 85 degrees in there and the broken AC is only affecting one side of the gym, which is still not affected that severely, it is just a little warmer than usual. I highly recommend joining this gym if you just need your standard machines and/or simple amenities. It is a great gym!

2024 update: As you can see, I’m a long time patron of this gym. Unfortunately they have been going downhill because the AC IS BROKEN and has been for months. Do not recommend.

I would be giving this gym a 5-star rating--they are clean, affordable, and well-stocked--but unfortunately, they are not enforcing the recent mask policy at all. I have been to the gym a few times since the mask mandate was reinstated, and there have been many people blatantly not wearing a mask. Employees have walked past unmasked people and not said a word. This is very disappointing and speaks volumes about their regards for health and the pandemic.

Update on 9/20/21: The masking situation has improved immensely at the gym. There are still a few people who take their masks off, but they are few and far between and overall it is good. There are signs that have been put up around the facility and staff seems to be more aware. I am updating the rating to 4 stars to reflect this change.

I love Fuel Fitness, I have been a member here for years.

This place helps me get and stay jacked.

They have a ton of different equipment to choose from for weight, machines, and cardio.

They also include yoga classes in the membership, which is great.

It is also the only gym I have ever been to that has a weighted sled and I freaking love pushing and pulling a weighted sled.

Also the price is reasonable.

Fuel Fitness has been my gym of choice for years now, and I love going here. The price is reasonable with a good selection of equipment. However, the one star review is explicitly due to the fact that they have kept the air conditioning off in the gym for the entirety of 2024. The temperature in the gym has regularly been over 85 degrees for over a month now. When gym staff are asked about how ridiculously hot it is, they acknowledge that the AC is "broken", but are unable to provide a timeline for when it might be fixed. At this point, it appears the manager is deferring repair of the system, I assume to save money. Not having AC in a gym in NC in the summer is unacceptable and frankly dangerous for those of us that do more intense workouts. I will happily update this review if/when the AC is fixed in the gym.

I'm a new member and really pleased with my decision to join Fuel Fitness. The atmosphere of the gym is very welcoming to an exercise novice, and the staff has been extraordinarily helpful and welcoming. I find the equipment to be abundant and available. But the best part for me has been working with Allison Przytulski as my personal trainer. I've been wary of gyms in the past, and the questionable generic instruction from "trainers." Allison has well-earned my confidence in her competency and careful crafting of an exercise plan for me to meet my goals. I feel that she has gone the extra mile to individualize my training to take into consideration multiple past injuries, as well as to help me achieve some very important exercise goals. I've started with a 3 month personal training contract and now plan on an additional 6 month contract. These are words I never expected to write!

I was with the gym for several years on and off because it was close to me. The equipment is out of date, the space is poorly organized, and selection of equipment is both repetitive and not diverse enough. Management of this place is truly poor. I had a medical reason to leave my membership and the GM was an absolute nightmare, he lied to me about my membership agreement, made up policies that didn't exist, and made me feel terrible about myself. Lots of better gyms in the area.

We have been members for about 15 years and used to love this gym when it was Fitness World. But it has gone waaay downhill since being sold to Fuel Fitness about a year and a half or so ago. Now, we’re shopping around.
In summary, Fuel Fitness has made changes that the membership hates. They do not maintain their equipment which would otherwise be great, do not clean nor organize their equipment (both large machines and weights), crammed all their equipment together for no good reason (to the point where we hurt ourselves moving around equipment and loading weights on them) thereby underutilizing their good amount of space, and reduced the number of group classes we used to have under the previous Fitness World management.
Worst of all, they send surveys but do NOT listen to one iota of what members say (I’m always hearing members gripe and complain on the floor about these things, so it’s not just us).

This review is for 3 months in the summer of 2023. I only used the weights and cannot comment on the classes or personal training. As a reference, I've been weight training for 18 years, mostly at public gyms.

Positives - Usually not too busy and don't need to wait for equipment
-Abnormally large selection of kettlebells
-Good selection of dumbbells, except for heavier ones
-Older machines are nicer than newer models that you find in many commercial gyms
-The staff allows people to take shoes off and use lifting chalk, meaning they care about performance more than vanity
-They offer a week free trial without any hassle, which is nice; many gyms don't offer this.
-Steel plates, from 2.5-45lbs are much nicer than rubber coated plates for most lifting. They have old school deep dish plates, which are nice.

Negative - Only 3 squat racks and no deadlift/olympic lifting platforms. Nowadays, it's expected that a gym has lifting platforms.
-Very old bumper plates with sharp steel edges. I've never seen bumper plates like this before.
-The floors are lumpy, making deadlifts and cleans annoying (since there are no lifting platforms)
-Given that they have twice as much cardio equipment as they need, parting with this equipment provides ample space for additional lifting platforms and squat racks. The use of space in the facility could be easily improved.
-Most, if not all of, the barbells are bent. In addition to new bumper plates and platforms, they need some nice new bars.
-They recently changed their hours and are only open for a short time on Sundays. Sunday afternoons are no as busy as rush hour on a Monday (not sure what they are thinking here)
-This gym is relatively expensive. They market as $30 per month, but that isn't accurate. I signed up June 21st and it cost me $95.21 (monthly fee, sign up fee, undisclosed fees). I was billed $29 on July 1. I was Billed $78 on August 1 (annual fees). I expect to be billed $29 on September 1. In all, my monthly cost to attend this gym was $77. If it wasn't for the convenience I would have chosen to go someplace else. I have a membership at Crunch Fitness ($16 per month plus a $50 annual fee), but that would have been a longer drive. As a note - Crunch Fitness has an abundance of bumper plates and lifting platforms (are you paying attention, Fuel Fitness?).
-They require over 30 days notice to cancel a membership and not have the next months fee deducted. Feels slightly predatory.

Overall, this isn't a bad gym, but needs to make improvements. All it takes is for a Crunch Fitness or another cheap chain to open a location in Durham to put this place out of business.

Fitness world was better. They changed to fuel fitness about a year ago and management has made some questionable decisions. In the past six months they have been adding new equipment and a good amount of it is not useful. Spent 3000$ each on 4 different “fit benches” that are not any more useful than any of the benches that are already in the gym and end up just getting used as seats and racks for small dumbbells. They added a strip of turf that’s actually pretty nice except for the fact that they did not buy a sled to go with it so there is not much actual reason for the turf to be there and it just ends up getting used for people to bring there equipment on and do normal lifts that do not require turf. When they rearranged the gym to put the turf in is where everything went downhill and a large amount of loyal hardcore lifters left as soon as they did this for this reason. Squat racks do not have mirrors so you just end up staring at the person in front of you when you are lifting and all other machines are crammed together as if a 4 year old designed the layout. Overall it is brick and mortar surrounding bars and plates so not horrendous.

Source: Google

★ 3

Fitness world was fire, new management started doing unnecessary things. Squat racks have no mirrors, a 3 year old could get across the turf area under 8 seconds, im almost touching other people while I bench, decided to buy “fitbench” the most I’ve seen people do with them is use it as a chair. Keeps getting worse wish they would ask for customer feedback. Still a building with bars and weights so not that bad. Them new massage chairs are fire.

My husband and I were members here for over 6 years. We just finalized our cancellation today. The gym has not been the same since new management took over and most of the good staff left. What made us finally cancel is the constant frustration from poor communication: their phone number online is not accurate and their kids club hours online are not accurate (not even close!). We asked them last week what the kids club hours were, brought our kid there during the hours they told us just to find out that they're not open. My husband was told "well didn't you see the sign?"...there was no sign last week, nothing posted online, and we actually spoke with someone who told us it was open. If you don't rely on the kids club to use the gym then this place may be okay for you, but if you do I suggest looking elsewhere.

We've been members for many years. We also continued to pay our monthly fees even when the gym was closed during the initial COVID shutdowns. The new owners have not been good for the gym. Equipment out of service for weeks or more. They fired or pushed out all the good staff and personal trainers. Most of the group exercise classes are gone. Empty soap and paper towel dispensers (makes you wonder what other locker room hygiene steps they are skipping).

Fitness World was a great gym. If the new owners want to stop hemorrhaging members to other gyms and fitness businesses, they need to study the previous owner's playbook and step up their game.
