Before Ikaika, my energy levels were really low, I had a hard time motivating myself to exercise consistently, and my eating habits were terrible. I would make some progress with other programs, but never had the stamina to stick with any of them long-term.
With Ikaika, I am motivated to get myself to the gym, and it has not been a struggle to make myself go in the morning. I also have been much more consistent with eating healthy and drinking water. I have more energy, I have lost weight, and I am more productive at home. I am able to stay on top of housework more, I have more energy and do not nap as much, and I do not seem to be craving the junk food as much, especially while I am working.
I am incredibly satisfied with the program, and I am so happy that I am a part of Ikaika!

I can truly say that IKAIKA Gym/Einar and the sweet small group of fellow strivers has been a positive part of my past 8 weeks. I did not know exactly what to expect or hope for (despite the goal setting session I had at the start), but I am very grateful for this opportunity and glad that I took it on (and that they took me in). I hope, like many of the others, that I can keep it up and keep going. It's nice to see everyone each morning, and they are also a big motivation for coming each morning. Einar is an excellent coach - he keeps the atmosphere positive and entertaining while paying attention to each person's form for challenge level and injury prevention while providing instruction on the spot.
For context, I am a mom of young children with full time work, and I was feeling more than my age - tired, stiff, and feeling that I didn't have time. I'm not sure exactly how I first found out about the gym, but I found out that a good, trustworthy neighbor was attending the gym and found it to be transformative which caught my attention. I had passed by the gym many times but didn't realize exactly what it was - it is tucked away in a very discreet area on Hillsborough Rd near a bunch of car mechanic shops. Given the close proximity to my home (and again, feeling like I needed to do something), I finally called in for an introductory visit.
Before starting classes, there is a required one on one to learn how to do the exercises safely. I appreciated this as it prepared me for the classes and I have a history of breaking my foot during an exercise class. While I was hoping for more energy with exercising, I found that I was pretty tired the first couple of weeks - most likely an adjustment period with using my muscles more and waking up a little earlier than I typically did. I was counting the weeks of how long I had been sticking with the gym - and just being glad that I had stuck with it. In terms of results, one of the first things I noticed after a few weeks was that doing basic things, like going up the stairs at the end of the day, felt easier. The weight I started with started feeling easier, too, though Einar very shortly exchanged that weight with a heavier one. At this point, I actually do feel more fit cardiovascularly and with strength.
Some of the things I have learned by being at IKAIKA so far
-It is a good thing to have a coach (I've begun to think how nice it would be to have a coach in other areas of my life)
-Every minute counts (some of our workouts seem short timewise, but they are definitely a workout!)
-Consistency is key and being part of this gym has helped that happen for me
-Little changes make a world of difference (again, even short workouts, showing up, etc.. have had larger impacts over time)
-Little kindnesses speak volumes (Our fellow gym people often encourage one another. Einar promotes/exemplifies this and provides space for this.)
Some things I had to figure out - some of the emails and texts sent out from the gym are automated -- until I figured that out, I thought it very odd. Also, Coach does best communicating in-person :)
Overall, highly recommend trying out this gym!

I’ve tried various plans before and ended up quitting within a week, but Ikaika is truly different. I had various injuries in the past and I really have to be very cautious when trying new workouts. But, Coach Einar has been really supportive and yes, this guy really knows what he is doing. I’m now 3 weeks into the program, and the changes in my body are already visible. I lost 4 lbs in just the first 4 days with the diet plan + gym sessions, and the progress has only continued since then. Not only am I noticing a leaner physique, but my energy levels have also improved significantly. Finally getting some results I’ve been looking for, and I couldn’t be happier with my progress. I recently started going to Ikaika.
I was struggling with my weight gain and back/ hip pain while carrying my kids. I didn't know where to start until I found this place.
The coaches are friendly and I enjoy coming to the class.
During each class we work on different area of the body. We also learn how to work out safely to avoid injuries. We get support eating a healthy and balanced diet, too. I have more energy and feel happy.

With lab work results showing a need for some health work on my part and a withering inability to motivate myself, I asked around for a nearby exercise program recommendation and had several people suggest Ikaika. Strength Surge Program Review

Haha before I joined IKAIKA, I read all the 5 star reviews and thought maybe they were written by a bot. Can a place really be that great?
I joined because I wanted to learn how to lift weights. My mom got diagnosed with pretty bad osteoporosis and had to take drugs that made her feel miserable. I didn’t want that! Before, I would work out by going to a gym to run on the treadmill or do the elliptical. I was never a sporty person growing up so I didn’t know how to use the other equipment. I would be intimidated by big gyms with lots of equipment and people that looked like they knew what they were doing (because I didn’t!).
The IKAIKA plan I have is the perfect hybrid between personal training and just having membership to a gym. Coach Einar meets with everyone individually to set goals. This includes a nutrition plan. He starts with a few personal training sessions to make sure you are doing the moves correctly (and don’t injure yourself). Then, you can join the small classes where he keeps an eye on everyone to make sure they are okay, to check on their form, or to suggest modifications if they need them. Then, you have scheduled check-ins with him to go over your goals again, modify them etc.
I love this because during check-ins you can discuss your concerns or ask questions. (Honestly, sometimes I’m just a complainer and Coach Einar is such a good listener. He should be charging me therapist rates. 🤪.) Then, during the workout sessions Coach Einar really knows you and pays attention to your concerns.
I also love how everyone who goes to IKAIKA is working on themselves and has different goals. Everyone is “in their own lane” but together! It’s encouraging. It is also a super diverse gym! This was more important to me than I had previously thought—age, gender, race, sexual orientation, ability etc. so no one feels like that outsider.
Anyway, I really want IKAIKA to be a successful gym because it is a special place. It really helps everyone in a holistic way—physical training, nutrition, and social-emotional. If you are still intimidated, reach out to me on Facebook and I’ll go with you and be your gym buddy ☺️.

1.5 years later I'm still at IKAIKA! Exercise was never a big part of my life growing up. Long, detailed review!
I am a 32-year-old mother, and I've been attending Ikaika Fitness for a little over 3 months. I wanted to give it time so I could leave an honest review. I did the 12-week reset program. I lost 25 pounds in 13 weeks; well below my initial goal of 20 pounds. The diet plan is a huge part of that, but what I love about it is that you have several options of 'approved' foods and you can mix and match things to increase variety. I meal prep so that it's easier on me during the work week. Also, I didn't even follow the diet 100% (holidays, work lunches, etc.) and STILL managed to reach my goal weight!
The beginning of the program consists of several one-on-one sessions so you can learn the moves safely and start building strength. Then you move on to the group classes. There are some new moves in the group classes, but Coach Einar goes through each move thoroughly before the workout, so you don't feel lost or confused. It is a very welcoming and friendly environment with a small class size. If you are struggling with a move, he will work with you one-on-one during the group class to ensure you understand it. However, as with all programs, it isn't one-size-fits-all, and there are pros and cons.
The workouts are very hard. It's similar to a HIIT/Crossfit workout and it's often exhausting, leaving you dripping in sweat. This can be overwhelming for a new client, and it may not be for everyone. Also, the weights/exercises WILL be adjusted if you have certain needs. If you are building up strength or if you have a weak knee or if you have limited mobility, the workout WILL be tailored to fit your needs, so I really appreciate that! Safety is a major priority, and your health is paramount. If this kind of workout is for you, you will love the intensity. I always feel good and energized after a workout.
Pros:
-Challenging workout, but flexible to your individual needs.
-Friendly atmosphere; very welcoming to new people.
-Flexible eating plan and friendly advice throughout your journey.
-The gym always smells nice when I walk in, not like a sweaty gym.
-The equipment is cleaned after each workout and well-maintained.
-After the 12-week reset, there is no contract; you are on a month-to-month billing schedule, and you can leave any time.
Personal pros:
-I am stronger, more flexible, and I have way more energy than before I started the program.
-I can't stress enough how much stronger I am! I love it!
-I have less acne, less GI/stomach upset, and an improved mood, to the point where I think I might be able to wean off of some mental health medication (under a doctor's guidance).
-I have increased confidence and love the way my body looks.
Cons:
-Challenging workout; can be intimidating at first.
-In order to maintain the high intensity, sometimes I feel rushed when doing the moves. It's hard for me to maintain proper form when trying to do it quickly. I think this is because I'm uncoordinated and need more practice. There is a very strong focus on proper form during the workouts and Einar will help you out. It's just for me, personally, I struggle with the speed sometimes. (But I'm getting faster!)
-Limited class offerings; there are three class times with no weekend classes. This can be hard to fit in my schedule sometimes, but I have made it work!
-Price is high for my budget, but I value what I get out of it, and it is worth it to me!
Overall:
It's worth it to meet with Coach Einar and go over what the gym has to offer. If you are fed up with your current body/diet/lifestyle, I promise you won't be disappointed here. You are WAY stronger than you think, physically and mentally. This was the best health-related decision I've ever made. If you can commit to the 12-week program, you will not regret it. You'll be shocked at what you can accomplish!

As a Marine Corps veteran, I am used to being strong and fast. But as I've aged and become a mother, I lost most of that. I miss how fit I used to be, and I'm happy to say, I'm well on my way to being the fittest I've been in my life. Yay!

I have never, ever, been a gym person, and for my whole life I have associated exercise more with disliking one’s body than with fun, health, and wellbeing. But as I got further into my 30s, I started to notice that I couldn’t take my body’s strength for granted. I joined IKAIKA knowing that if I had any chance to actually stick with exercise, I would need to do it with some built in structure and expectations to show up, despite how new and foreign that felt at the time. Turns out, I feel totally at home in my class at IKAIKA. Everything that I thought would feel intimidating or “too much” or “not my kind of thing” has turned out to be totally within my reach, and the people I’ve met there are so supportive, diverse, and fun to be around. Einar does an amazing job of cultivating a little community there. If you know you need to take your fitness seriously and want high quality instruction but assume that you're just not a “gym person,” IKAIKA will be a pleasant surprise.
Since joining, I’ve noticed so many positive changes both inside and out. I look and feel stronger than I ever have in my life, my lower back pain and a lingering wrist injury have totally disappeared, and I notice myself breathing better throughout the day. But my favorite change has been the way exercise sets me up for the day with a better mood and mindset, and the sense of pride and gratitude that I have now for getting outside of my comfort zone and taking care of myself.

I have nothing but good things to say about Ikaika. Einar is an excellent trainer. He cares about his clients and their well being. He is very professional and doesn't seem to loose his patience, calm and assertive but never angry. When I get to the point where I wanna give up he pushes me a bit further, helping me reach my goals. Listen to him and fallow his guide lines and you are bound to succeed. It's a great gym, clean and organized. The other clients are excellent as well, just a great group of people with the same goals, to better themselves. Can't go wrong with Ikaika. If you are serious about getting in shape call Einar, he will get you on the right track.

I couldn’t be more satisfied with joining this gym and this community. The pandemic really diminished my fitness motivation. I kept telling myself I’d get back to it. But I didn’t until now. Turning 60 made me question my priorities. I’ve been a member of 2 crossfit “boxes” and really thought I’d join another. But I was hesitant to do that due to my age and potential for injury. RESULTS! COMMUNITY! This gym has been a game changer for me! The owner, Einar, creates a judgement free, welcoming environment that tops off his effort to help you reach your goals. I came to Ikiaka with very little hope and a lot of fears because I have been sold every weight loss scheme from every gym and trainer you can think of and once I handed them my money, they would throw everything at me and then just leave me to my own devices, which for me always meant failure and a lot of wasted money. Ikiaka is the complete opposite! Einar not only provides the instructions on how to meet your goals but he provides the structure to do so as well!! Accountability through group training, app tracking, Facebook community groups, and one-on-one follow ups with Einar every few weeks! You want to make new friends, have support, and reach your goals? Ikiaka is the place to start! I have lost 20lbs so far and 21% body fat!! and gained so much knowledge about myself, my body, nutrition, and overall confidence in my ability to accomplish hard things!

I turn 44 years old in December and I have been telling myself I need/want to get in shape for the past several years. I have not worked out consistently since high school and I was not eating well. I had tried joining a few gyms over the last several years and I had tried dieting, but I never stuck with it. When I discovered Ikaika was less than a mile from my house I thought I would give it a try. I AM SO GLAD I DID! What I found was an incredibly knowledge and encouraging coach who approaches health and fitness holistically! AND a community of people who are accepting, encouraging, and very welcoming. I highly recommend this gym! I am a work in progress, but I definably see progress after 4 weeks! I am eating well (thanks to the guidance from my new coach), working out 4-5 times a week, gaining muscle, losing weight, feeling more energetic, sleeping better, and meeting awesome people! IKAIKA will push you to your limits, and then you totally feel accomplished once you complete the workout. Nutrition Review-
Coach has been sharing his vast knowledge on nutrition and how to shift my mindset that food is fuel. The diet aspect of the program is awesome and I am grateful to have learned a better way to eat that is efficient for my body.
However, as far as the work outs go, I was told this was a style of CrossFit that focused on functional movements to prevent injury and aid with lifestyle changes as we age. Instead I was pushed very hard very quickly and given heavier weights than my body could apparently handle and sustained likely permanent injury. I trusted the coach to know more than I did regarding training. I have since learned that I need to check the backgrounds and training of people I hire to help me with training. At my age, it is more important to hire someone with some medical knowledge regarding anatomy and actual physical therapy. Since attending this gym, I have been in treatment for nearly a year to repair the damage and I am potentially having surgery soon. There is only one trainer at this gym and that trainer is a male. So for a female with (certain) sensitivities in (my) personal background in interactions with males who aren’t mindful of that possibility, it was awkward. The one on one meetings we had ended up becoming extremely uncomfortable and invasive, more about my personal life than my fitness goals and resulted in me being very upset in my car by myself after these meetings, trying to understand why the coaching to trainee relationship changed. I no longer felt safe. The overall energy became toxic and I ended up terminating my contract early just to protect myself.
This is the kind of gym for people who are free of any pre existing injury and want to get in shape quickly. If you have ANY type of injury, it will likely become worse here. You sign a waiver, so don’t make the mistake I did and think a trainer will protect you. CrossFit trainers are taught to push! This isn’t a sustainable environment.
Reach out to previous members before making this commitment if possible.
Attend with strong goals in mind and if it’s too much, say something immediately!

Update: I have been at Ikaika for ~1.5 years. After losing 25 pounds in the first 3 months, Coach Einar and I continue to work together to set new goals. I always leave Ikaika feeling better about the workout completed and myself. I appreciate having members at all skill levels because each one inspires me to be the best that I can be. There are only POSITIVE things to say about IKAIKA! I am almost one month in and am making more progress than I have in the past several years. I have eaten healthy foods and exercised for years without any success of losing weight. For me, it has been a very successful program because of it's easy to follow nutritional plan and personal training sessions. The small group classes allows you to get "attention" if you need help during the workout. But most of all, you are supported by fellow partners. The gym itself is always clean and well-maintained. The group fitness classes, which have been both challenging and fun.

I've been going to IKAIKA for about a month now with the 12 week nutrition program and already I have already seen such a change! I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks and have surpassed my first milestone! The program is not difficult to follow and the workouts are challenging but not impossible. Original mission accomplished! I’ve lost my goal of 40 pounds and received all the related benefits such as: significant reduction of joint swelling due to proper diet that works in tandem with the personalized workout routines; all my cloths fit with the welcome challenge of being loose; having plenty of energy as long as I’m maintaining the right kind and proper amount of carbs; and all around better attitude towards the desire to continue on with this journey of a healthier lifestyle.
For me, there are two key factors that helped me reach this goal. First and foremost, I was mentally ready and had the personal desire to make a lifestyle change. Without that, nothing or anyone could have helped me get to this point or go further. Secondly, finding the right organization to guide me through the proper process that I admittedly did not know how to accomplish properly. That organization is IKAIKA, and the sole guidance from Einar.
Factors I like:
This is a big one, all the food recommendations center around REAL food. No shakes or supplements so I’ve learned how to continue to support this healthy lifestyle in the future with no reliance on proprietary diet products.
I’ve learned correct exercise techniques related to CrossFit. A few sore muscles is expected but most importantly I have not had the slightest injury.
Personal training guidance tailored to my physical limitations (which have reduced). I constantly have to manage arthritis in my lower back and wrists.
It’s rare to find an organization like IKAIKA. My experience has truly been life changing.
Now I want to see how far I can go.
My perspective is one of an older person returning to the world of CrossFit after several years of being away from the sport. But this time my goals are very different and focused and I’ve learned that being guided by Einar at IKAIKA has proven to be exactly what I needed. After a detailed evaluation of my goals, Einar has been able to tailor a dietary and exercise program that has enabled me to meet and exceed my expectations even though I’m only about 25% of the way through the Reset program. He started by analyzing my physical limitations so that I can get the most out of my limited exercise time while ensuring that my movements and strenuous levels don’t exceed my capabilities. At the same time he is holding my feet to the fire on my eating habits and pushing me physically to my limits without injury. (Sore muscles don’t count) This individual and knowledgeable support is what it will need to reach my final goal. I get the feeling that he is as excited about me achieving my goals as I am.

Life changing! Since joining IKAIKA 12 weeks ago I've lost 7% body fat, gained 8% muscle (based on DEXA scans) and I feel better than I have in years.
I lifted weights for many years but stopped when my gym closed due to COVID. I had a hard time getting motivated to start working out again so a friend suggested I try something different. I was hesitant at first, but after meeting Einar and talking with him about IKAIKA, I decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad I did!
Einar is a fantastic coach, both for exercise and for nutrition. He designed a personalized nutrition plan for me, guided me in learning new exercises (with a focus on good form) and has been incredibly encouraging both during and outside of the workout classes. I was surprised at how much more effective the exercise and nutrition at IKAIKA have been to lose fat AND gain muscle than the years of weight training that I've done on my own.
The workouts are a cross between different types of exercises: yoga/stretching, strength training and low-impact cardio workouts using weights. I would describe the classes as kind of like a cross between long-interval HIIT and low-impact CrossFit. The gym is clean, the people are really fun and supportive, the classes are challenging and Einar is an amazing coach.
If you are looking for something more than a standard gym and want life changing results (assuming you put in the effort) from a well-designed personalized exercise and nutrition program that includes expert guidance and accountability, then I suggest you give IKAIKA a try.

I'm beyond elated with my progress. Thus far, I'm about 4 weeks in and I've learned to eat properly, equipment technique, and the importance of group classes.
I'm better at food prep; which in turn, makes my food selection quick and simple. I don't feel like I'm starving myself on salads. I’m a classpass user and have taken a lot of classes in the Raleigh/Durham area and this was by far my favorite. Einar took the time to explain each move and made sure I was comfortable. The class was fast paced but manageable and able to be modified depending on your fitness level. IKAIKA is not your typical gym experience. The classes are very small, and Einar (coach/trainer/owner) has the ability to motivate/coach each of the participants throughout the workout. While I am new to IKAIKA, I have been a member of many gyms in the past, and I can say with certainty that IKAIKA is a different workout experience.

I Have been to lots of gyms and Ikaika is not your typical workout facility. They go above and beyond what other gyms offer. Small class sizes are a bonus and allow for the personal attention so that each participant is being challenged to their personal level. Positive, upbeat atmosphere motivates me to keep going when I think I can’t do anymore. Einar takes the time to make sure class participants have correct form and proper breathing to maximize the workout and prevent injury. Classes begin and end with yoga, which is an amazing warmup and stretching routine before the workout and a wonderful relaxation after the workout. Einar is an awesome coach. He is not rude or overpowering and he knows how to teach excellence. He pushed my wife and me throughout an insane training program that was very challenging. I have been a runner since I was young and he taught me some new cool running techniques. I would never have thought that he would teach me how to be a better runner as well as build muscle, stamina, and strength. I highly recommend Ikaika!

Einar has been one of my CrossFit coaches for the past few years and one of the best coaches I have ever had the pleasure of working with. His warm ups are intense, unique and effective. His coaching style is encouraging, with an emphasis on improving and perfecting form. I learned so much about correct lifting technique from Einar. There are many choices in CrossFit boxes locally, but I highly recommend CrossFit Ikaika because Einar is such an outstanding coach.

I had the privilege to be in several crossfit classes which Coach Einar was teaching. He provided meaningful tips and techniques to accommodate movement limitations I had to help me complete the WODs. He listened to me and instinctively knew when to push but encouraged balance with pushing myself and taking caution to prevent injuries. I just wish he lived closer to me!!
