A very nice YMCA. We have a national pass and this is one of the best Y's we've visited. The outdoor pool was great. Could use a little vacuuming of the bottom debris but great otherwise. Staff super friendly. Give this place a visit, you'll see what I mean

We came here specifically for the lakeside amenities⦠and this was on a warm, perfect Saturday afternoon. We were the only ones there much of the time - there were more lifeguards than guests. Why is that you may ask? Lakeside amenities on a perfect Saturday afternoon should attract Lots of people. I think I know: this YMCA kills off any chance of fun with all the rules they impose. To even be on the beach or in the water, you have to wear a lifejacket. It is not pleasant to swim around in a life-jacket. Even full grown adults need to wear them. There is a large inflatable water slide right in the lake, with 4 sides⦠but you can only slide off of the side that the lifeguard can see. There are 2 swim areas, but you can only use the one where the lifeguard is currently occupying. As far as the kayaks and canoes, you can only take them within a very limited, small area.
All the while my family were restricted in all these ways from fuller enjoyment⦠the posse of lifeguards were having a ball - they would jump off the roof of the inflatable waterfall slide, and swim around all they wanted without the life jackets⦠seemed unfair that they can have more fun than us.
This is a trend I have long observed at many YMCAβs, this over-concern for safety kills all chances of enjoying your time. Many YMCAβs donβt even allow underwater βbreath holdingβ, saying it leads to drowning π

The staff is great. However this is Not one of the best YMCA's in North Carolina, and I have been to many many Y's. It's also in one of the richest towns in the state but has the worst and smallest Y makes no sense. All the equipment you want to use is full of people all over the place during peak hours and the gym area is very tight and most of the equipment is dated. basketball courts are normally always taken from Pickle ball, volley ball, kids camp. and During the summer there is dust and food all over the courts, rarely ever available for people who actually want to play basketball. They desperately need to build another court and expand the gym. If the YMCA doesn't have the budget they need talk to the city, talk to board of Lake Norman or Davison, someone has the money if the Y does not, get a government grant if all else fails I don't know, but something needs to change there. The brand YMCA can sponsor the ALT hawks NBA team? But we don't have a modern and upgraded YMCA, Gym and courts in Lake Norman is crazy. They need to rebuild it or just start building more / adding on to it with a upgraded gym section etc, they have TONS of land and real estate there. locker rooms FILLED with people all over the place those need to be upgraded too. Corporate needs to step in and help, place needs assistance and funding for the correct things

** Frustrating Experience with Membership Service **
I visited this YMCA multiple times, hoping to gather information about becoming a member, but unfortunately, I encountered a lot of confusion along the way. I understand things can sometimes be complicated, but the information I received was often inconsistent, which led to a lot of wasted time.
While the front desk staff at the YMCA at Lake Norman were ALL very friendly and polite, my experience was marred by poor communication from management.
The most frustrating part of my visit, however, was the director of membership. Their cold demeanor and condescending laugh when I gently shared my frustration made an already stressful situation worse. I was simply trying to express my experience politely, but their response only added to the tension.
Despite this, Iβve decided to join due to the lack of gym options in the area, though I hope management works to improve communication and ensure they donβt make their members feel dismissed.

Iβve been trying to call this ymca for years for various reasons and theyβve never answered the phone. Encounter with childcare supervisor about a year ago also very rude and with an attitude. Someone not quite understanding of her role. Such a shame. We visit many of the YMCAs in Charlotte and this one is the most unpleasant staff wise I can think of.

Needs to expand lap swim hours. I agree that the cleaning crew does a great job & desk staff are friendly & helpful. However, nobody seems to enforce the "adults over 18" locker room policy. It's awkward enough to have small children in the women's locker room, but last weekend, an adult male was there as well! Maybe swim teachers could redirect parents & caregivers to use the family locker room. Under no circumstances should a man be in the women's locker room.

The outdoor pool closes at noon on Memorial Day...?
Are you kidding me...?
Members wait *8 months* for the outdoor facility to open.
During the week days, the outdoor pool schedule will be the same as the indoor...?
The membership community wants to know exactly why the pool is **closed from 12-3:30 p.m.** every day...?
Conversations with the residents suspect that the Aquatics director has become a bit lethargic in this regard.
It must be quite pleasant to be paid a staff salary and enjoy a **3 1/2 hour lunch break.**
Is it that much of a *bureaucratic conundrum* to keep the pool opened until 1 p.m.??? .. considering that many working residents would appreciate taking advantage of a lap swim during their lunch hour (noon- 1).
Remember.... lockdowns happened 4 years ago; the **lifeguard shortage** story doesn't cut it anymore.

This YMCA has the smallest selection of weight lifting equipment I have ever seen. They have numerous classrooms, a pool, and rooms of cardio equipment without a soul in them. Everyone has to crowd into a small area around the elevator to use what little free weights there are and only one squat rack. Impossible to have a decent workout.

for a CHRISTIAN organization the CEO & COO of YMCA need to take better care of their employees and actually pay them a proper salary they can live on.
This location is ALWAYS understaffed
Why? because the YMCA barely offers minimum wage to their staff.
My daughter is enrolled in their preschool and she likes it. And I recommend the Y kids child care also.

Just came to drop my kids off for their first day of camp. We parked and walked in not knowing exactly where to go. We were redirected to the drop off area, but because by then it was 9:01 they wouldnβt take my kids despite everyone being in an unorganized group 20 yards away.
The e-mail we received said nothing about a black out time for drop offs. Itβs natural to assume we couldnβt drop off early because we didnβt pay for the longer day w/ an earlier drop off time. I had to search through the site for the handbook for this specific YMCA, then find a little section on the 6th page regarding this.
There is a whole line of parents who had no idea and now will be late for work because the only thing they received in an email was the general camp time 7-6. Camp is from 9-5 for us, but you canβt drop off between 9 and 9:30.
The poor communication on and apparent inability to handle drop offs or least have the sense to have a window that doesnβt sharply cut off when the kids are suppose to be there is just gross incompetence.

This message is especially for management. Staff and service are absolutely amazing. Thanks for that.
But every my swim pool session I see people who puts off their clothes/shoes right in pool area and no shower before. Definitely this is not appropriate behavior. I believe that most of pool visitors agree with me. This is not hygienic.
Dear management, please set the rule "no shower - no swimming" and the pool area is not dressing room. Thanks

I have contacted the facility a dozen times in regards to a refund for cancelled swim classes, and 6 months later I have still NOT received it. The swim director Teresa has told me numerous times to anticipate said refund, but to no avail. We attended a swim class over the summer. There were a total of three other children in the class. 2 children were left unattended, which for a 3 year old must be pretty intimidating to enter the water and not see your parents! Those children screamed and cried at the top of their lungs for the entire class, echoing in an indoor pool, and while crying kids is not the responsibility of the ymca, the policy for parents to be able to leave 3 year old alone is. This was terribly disruptive to the other children. My nerves were rattled after 30 minutes of this. The pool was freezing, poor little toddlers were shivering, my son clasping his body shaking and not wanting to swim. We have quite enjoyed swim classes at Swim Otters, so I would recommend them. We completed swim classes at an outdoor pool with a private instructor and that was also a great success. The YMCA was a major disappointment!

I have been an on-and-off number of the YMCA's since I got out of the Army in 2002. I am an orphan and an immigrant and I've had challenges. I was at the Cornelius YMCA, and had a situation happen where I was suspended from the YMCA. I was planning on contesting it, but what I did not know, was that the YMCA staff sent the police to my house. They did not tell me it was going to happen at any point in my interaction with them. What happened however, was because of this, I was kicked out of my housing and have been dealing with homelessness ever since. And Suicidal Thoughts. I would love if someone would contact the woman who caused this and tell her that she did something to hurt an orphaned Army veteran. I really miss the saunas if it was a wonderful thing for my health, and I would love to join the YMCA again, so if someone from the YMCA would contact me that would be wonderful. I'm going to end my life soon.

Wonderful facility, ultra-friendly staff and authentic community. Been going to the YMCA for about 5 years now and loving every minute of it. The indoor/outdoor pool is fantastic and they even have a beachfront that members can enjoy (with a huge inflatable slide and obstacle course). Workout equipment is new and spaced out comfortably. It's a close-knit community and there's always familiar faces everytime you go. Kids program is second-to-none, as well. Been taking my son to the YMCA for 3 years now. He loves his teachers, his classmates and all of the activities they do. They teach Christian values, as well, which is such a breath of fresh air in today's world. My review is only for the lake access, not for the gym or workout facility.
I saw on Instagram they have lake access on Saturdays from 11am-4pm so I came today to check it out. My membership is at the Dowd YMCA in Charlotte but I had no problem visiting this location!
If you drive to the left past the main building, you'll see the lake access area and there is a small parking lot where you can park. There is a covered pavilion with picnic tables so you can bring a picnic lunch. There are also bathrooms and dressing rooms available for changing. Nothing fancy but it's nice that they are there!
There is a small cove area where you can kayak, canoe, stand up paddle, or play on two inflatable climbing things in the water. They require everyone to wear a life vest which they can supply if you don't have your own. There was no cost to use any of the equipment!
On a crowded day they ask you to limit the time you have the equipment to an hour, but on a slow day they don't care how long you use it. For the swimmers and kids, every hour they call everyone out of the water for 15 minutes, but kayakers can stay in the water.
There are also plenty of lifeguards on duty. I counted at least 7. They station 2 lifeguards in kayaks at each of the inflatable things to watch the kids from both sides. One lifeguard stands on the dock and watches the kayakers in the cove. They even have a lifeguard ski boat that they send out to watch the kayakers who paddle outside of the cove. I felt very safe when I was there!
This is definitely an activity place and not a beach for laying out and tanning.

Enjoy using the YMCA family of locations. This location has a real problem with theft. My wife had her LOCKED locker broken into during a visit. The staff (who was friendly and sympathetic) informed her that this was something theyβve been monitoring for MONTHS (unbeknownst to us when we signed up) and agreed it was a problem. She lost hundreds of dollars in jewelry and other items. She has cancelled her membership and filed a police report. Just be careful as I understand they hit the parking lot also.

Itβs okay. Very small gym size, they have good equipment just not enough floor space. Communication of employees isnβt very effective.
