I’ve been going to Midtown Yoga for going 4 years now. It’s my favorite place, the classes ranges from challenging to calming yoga classes. The hot environment is so good to sweat in especially on winter season. The staffs are very friendly and accommodating. The place is clean and well-maintained.

I’ve been practicing here for almost five years and always miss the community and practice when I travel out of town. It’s become a pleasurable piece of health and wellness. I’m grateful for many aspects of Midtown. I love that I can bring friends the first time for free! I love the amount of classes available. I love the variety of classes and yoga guides available. Avery is new, but the slow speed in which she delivers her guidance is my favorite. The flow Julia puts together are unique, fun, and challenging. Kelly’s my unwind is magical and she might have super human intuitive about the humans practicing with her and their needs at that moment. I can’t say enough good things about the team that runs midtown. Thanks guy and gals!

I had been declining invitations to do hot yoga with my best friend for over a year, and I'm so glad she kept pushing me to get out there! We had the pleasure of taking my first strength class with Deion. I found his class to be both uplifting and challenging. I appreciated the reassurance to get what you need out of the practice while trusting yourself to go harder. The playlist was fire and him offering modified versions of some of the movements made the experience feel welcoming and approachable. Doing something that you've been afraid of for a long time can go really well or really badly. And I'm glad to say that my time at Midtown was overwhelmingly positive!

Deion offers such a refreshing yoga strength class! His booming voice & clear modeling of exercises carries me through the class! Deion’s diverse music selection pairs perfectly with the movements & makes time fly while we all, as Deion says, “Work!” After years at Midtown Durham, I’m thrilled that Deion joined the team with his teaching gift!

On the second floor of a Durham shopping complex, above a Zambrero restaurant, Emily Wallace has built something that would have seemed impossible a decade ago: a venture capital-backed yoga empire that somehow still feels neighborly.

Midtown Yoga Durham, which opened in 2020 as the second location in Wallace's growing chain, represents the curious evolution of yoga from counterculture to corporate investment. The studio is owned by MDO Holdings, a Raleigh-based firm with a portfolio spanning O2 Fitness clubs, Happy + Hale juice bars, and more than 30 companies across North Carolina. Yet step into one of their signature 105-degree classes, and you might forget you're in a boardroom-approved wellness concept.

"Friendly neighborhood hot yoga studio," reads one detailed Google review. The breakdown reveals the studio's particular alchemy: five stars for "clear cuing" and "asana variety," but just one star for "daylight studio" and two for "silent savasana." It's a telling snapshot of modern yoga's trade-offs—professional instruction and good value, but in a windowless second-floor space where the final relaxation gets interrupted.

Wallace's journey to yoga entrepreneur began with a college dropout fantasy. During her first year at university, uncertain about her path, she discovered hot yoga and immediately told her parents she wanted to abandon her studies for teacher training. She didn't drop out, but the seed was planted. Seven years of teaching at studios, gyms, retirement homes, and hosting international retreats followed before she partnered with MDO Holdings in 2018.

"I wanted Midtown Yoga to be a lifestyle rather than just somewhere you go to sweat," Wallace explained in a 2018 interview, describing her careful attention to aesthetics. The result feels like Instagram-ready spirituality: blue LED lighting creates an otherworldly atmosphere during classes, while the retail area sells everything from essential oils to candles featuring Snoop Dogg's face.

The business model reflects yoga's mainstream moment. Monthly unlimited memberships run $159—positioning Midtown firmly in the premium tier alongside chains like CorePower Yoga, where Wallace herself once worked as a studio manager. Class packages, teacher training programs, and corporate partnerships (including sessions with the Carolina Hurricanes hockey team) diversify revenue streams in ways that would make any MBA proud.

But the numbers suggest the formula works. With 4.8 stars from 62+ Google reviewers and consistent class bookings, Midtown Durham joins locations in Raleigh and Richmond as proof that yoga can scale without losing its soul entirely. Students appreciate the professional instruction, variety of heat levels (from 85 to 105 degrees), and amenities like complimentary showers and first-visit mat rentals.

The second-floor location in University Hill development, strategically positioned between Duke University and Hope Valley Country Club, captures the studio's target demographic: health-conscious professionals and students willing to pay premium prices for consistent quality. Student discounts acknowledge the college market, while unlimited members can bring friends for free—a community-building touch that feels genuine despite the corporate backing.

Critics might argue that venture-funded yoga represents everything wrong with wellness commodification. When MDO Holdings announced the Durham expansion in 2019, chairman Michael D. Olander Jr. spoke of "cultivating community" with the calculated enthusiasm of a portfolio manager. The blue-lit studios and lifestyle merchandising can feel performative, prioritizing Instagram moments over inner transformation.

Yet Wallace's authentic enthusiasm seems to permeate the experience. Her background includes singing in gospel choirs and winning acting awards as a child in Belmont, North Carolina—details that humanize that cash money corporate narrative.

Consistent issues with cleanliness and security. Studios and mats are regularly dirty. Had mine and my wife’s wallets stolen right out of the cubbies because the support staff forgot to lock the doors. I’m obsessed with Midtown Yoga! I never thought I’d find a yoga community that made me feel comfortable and also challenged. Hot yoga in itself has complimented by workout routine and I’m really happy with the increased balance I’m feeling. The studio itself is clean, contemporary. This isn’t really yoga. Studio is nice. Instruction was good, but it’s a fast paced class with loud, fast music and colored lights. It’s really more of a cardio/strength combo workout class that happens to use yoga poses. Great if that’s what you’re looking for.

Love Midtown Yoga Durham! It’s very nice and clean. Also love having the two studio options. While I love the smaller room for its more intimate and cosy feel, the bigger room is also just as good and allows you to feel the energy from the other students! Staff are very welcoming and always friendly when coming in. On top of that, The ability to rent mats and blocks is also super helpful because that means I don’t have to run home after work or carry my gear with me everywhere. The teachers I’ve trained with are awesome and the early morning classes always leave me feeling energized for the day. Can’t recommend this place enough!

It’s ok. Not really a community there. People come in and out, very few seem to socialize. Big quality differences in classes between teachers, and none have really blown me away as top quality. More annoying…someone stole my mat there recently. I asked the staff and they took my phone number, but nobody really seemed to care or try or even followed up.

I purchased the 10 for $25 class pack earlier this year to try out the studio and for the most part I had a wonderful experience. It was my first time practicing yoga in a group setting so I was nervous about joining a class but the entire staff was super welcoming.

The first class I tried was My Warm Flow with Althea. Wonderful instructor and she was super clear with explaining the transitions, demonstrating poses and also providing modifications. I also enjoyed the class option of having a warm class as opposed to jumping straight into hot flow.

I had signed up for My Strength as my second class but wasn’t able to actually attend. It was scheduled around 5pm on a weekday and I got there a little more than 5 minutes early and it was difficult to find a spot for my mat in the room. It was so packed I ended up placing my mat in front of the space where the equipment room was, but people kept having to pass me to grab blocks etc. and it also wasn’t an ideal spot to see the instructor. I ended up leaving before the class started. It seems like they allocated more spots in the class than they had space in the actual studio.

I also tried My Unwind with Breanna and really enjoyed it. It was restorative and a great way to end the day. My only complaint is that sometimes it was hard to hear her guidance over the music. The music wasn’t even that loud but she didn’t project enough at times.

As far as the studio itself, it’s nice. I used the showers the first time I went and they have ample hygiene products, which I thought was really considerate. I considered signing up for a membership but decided on doing ClassPass instead because it’s more cost effective and I can go to more than one yoga studio. Overall, I like Midtown Yoga enough that I’ll go back for a drop-in or two in the future.

I attended a Wednesday 6 AM hot flow class as a guest of a friend who highly recommended Midtown Yoga (MY). I usually practice at a different hot yoga studio in Durham and was curious to see how MY compares.

Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing, mainly due to the instructor and the class structure. Upon arrival, the teacher seemed minimally engaged and almost annoyed about signing me up, despite the process taking less than five minutes. While I appreciated the available lockers for belongings, I can see potential issues with the limited number of lockers, especially during larger classes. There are two showers and one bathroom for all students, which could also become problematic during busy times or back-to-back classes.

The heated room's dim lighting during class was a positive aspect for me, though the colored ambient lighting felt disorienting. The room was hotter than expected for the type of flow being taught, adding to the discomfort.

The class structure was another disappointment. The teacher did not introduce herself either at the front desk or at the beginning or end of the class. We spent nearly 20 minutes on breathwork and warming up, leaving limited time for the actual flow. The warmup included a lot of stretching but lacked necessary muscle activation before strength work. The flow itself was fast-paced, not intuitive, and lacked smooth transitions. The teacher seemed to assume that all students were familiar with the poses and provided minimal guidance, no modifications, and no alignment cues. Despite being familiar with hot yoga poses, I often found myself looking around to see what pose we were supposed to be in. I felt particularly bad for our other friend, who was unfamiliar with the 26+2 poses and was clearly lost for a significant portion of the class.

We only went through each set of shapes once on either side, whereas I’m used to a structure where we go through two sets, with the first set being slower and the second in a flow state. This might be a difference in studio or teacher training, which is acceptable, but the overall execution left much to be desired. Additionally, Savasana was very short, and after class, the teacher didn't engage with the students or ask about my experience as a guest.

I am most disappointed with the teacher and the flow. While I’m sure there are better instructors at this studio, this initial experience left a bad impression and did not meet my expectations.

I’ve been a member here for over a year and a half and am only leaving because I’m moving! I’m so sad about it! I wasn’t hugely into yoga before finding Midtown, but I was seeking a sense of community. I found that so quickly - the teachers are warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, and the space itself is full of positive energy. I also found the type of workout that makes me feel my best mentally and physically. I had so much fun and learned to find a peaceful space for myself here, I highly recommend!

Have to give this place two stars (being generous) I booked the 10 day unlimited to try it out. I got to the studio and the wooden steps to your left had everyone stuff thrown everywhere. It looked really dirty and while they offer lockers, most of them are taken.

Once my instructor showed me around, she was really nice, I went into the room. It smelled like wet dog. While I understand that it is 100 degrees, it smelled so bad.

Once class began, I left 15 minutes in. I could not take the claustrophobia. I felt people breathing on me and we were packed like sardines in a tiny room.

Overall, I have visited various studios in the area and have never had such a weird vibe and experience than I did here.

I hate to give Midtown less than 5 stars because the classes, the instructors and the space are truly incredible. I’ve tried almost all of Durham’s studios over the years and I really do think Midtown is the best for hot yoga and my favorite classes….when I can get in. Which brings me to my reason for giving 3 stars instead of 5, the scheduling process is incredibly frustrating and actually what forced me to change my membership from unlimited to four classes a month and I still struggle to get into classes on the weekend that work for me. The only way that I’ve found to get into classes that you want is to book a week out but if your schedule suddenly changes the day before your class, let’s say, and you go into the app to find a different class, all the other classes are full forcing you to just cancel completely. The weekends are even worse, for instance I just got out of a great Sunday class (8:30 was the only one open when I booked on Wednesday maybe?) and I went to try and book for next weekend and every class on Saturday for instance is full or waitlisted until noon (next weekend is their anniversary celebration but this is a common occurrence for me every weekend). They do have a waitlist for classes but I’ve never gotten in off the waitlist and even then you’re just waiting around to see if you get in while trying to plan your weekend. Obviously this is because the classes are so good and people love the studio, but it is unfortunately causing me to think about canceling even the 4 class a week membership I have because it’s so frustrating. I hope they can figure it out because like I’ve said many times in this review and others have said in their reviews, it’s a great studio with great teachers and classes.

Awesome hot flow studio with many classes to choose from early morning until evening to accommodate busy schedules. Several instructors provide challenging, hot, fast flows with upbeat playlists (love Reymound, Breanna, Amanda, Daniel+). Only feedback I provide to management is to mark the floors so folks know where to place mats, as classes tend to fill up quickly and there seem to be a lot of visitors/new yoga students. Feedback to members & guests: this seems obvious, please leave your cell phone out of the studio. :)

I love Midtown! I've been wanting to leave a review for awhile now. I've really gotten a feel recently for how competitive the fitness industry can be in a larger city and I think Midtown strikes up the perfect balance of creating a welcoming environment while also maintaining members and marketing in the community. It keeps it local while not limiting potential for some expansion. I think that's the way to go. Lovely instructors and studio. Awesome place!

I tried out the my hot flow class, and it was shockingly different from what I was expecting. I think that if you're just into yoga to burn calories and don't care about the spiritual aspects and what yoga truly is, you'd enjoy the class. It was not a true vinyasa flow which is supposed to be a smooth transition between asanas. There was no connection with the breath. It was extremely fast paced with very little holding of poses and barely a breath between transitions. This is more of a workout class that's focused on doing as many poses possible to upbeat music (think P90X). Poses are *shouted* at you while the instructor walks around and there is no guidance. No stopping to help a student if they're struggling, no emphasis on form. If you don't care about the mind body connection and just want to burn some calories, this is the class for you. This is not a typical hot vinyasa flow, and I've been to many. Furthermore, a good yoga instructor doesn't use the word "just". During savasana the instructor kept repeating "just feel, don't think about anything" and telling us what was going on in our minds. It was extremely distracting and also the opposite of mindfulness. The idea of mindfulness is to let thoughts come up as they will, and not place any judgments on them or try to deter them. You also shouldn't tell someone what's going on in their mind because you don't know. I tried to talk to the instructor after but I could tell she was faking trying to be nice and didn't really care to engage me on my thoughts. She recommended a slower flow but that was not the point. This was the epitome of bastardization of yoga. I ended up finding a beautiful studio in Durham where the instructor puts so much emphasis on the spiritual aspects and other limbs of yoga, yet keeps the class challenging and rigorous. So there's hope out there. I know many might not have the same opinion as me because yoga has become very colonized and distorted here in the West, but posting just in case others share similar mindsets. Maybe there's an instructor at Midtown Durham that would check my boxes, but that class left such a bad taste that I didn't bother going back.

I love Midtown Yoga Durham! I was nervous to start yoga since I am a beginner but the staff have made me feel welcomed! I love that the instructors encourage growth wherever you are in your practice. They also have awesome events in addition to fun yoga classes. MY Durham has become my second home!

P.S. The playlists are the best 🫶🏽

I really enjoyed this studio and am proud to have been one of its members. They offer a nice variety of classes from easy to challenging. I like that they have showers and lockers as well as rental mats, which I have found less of at other studios that charge more. The staff is diverse, experienced, helpful, and fun. This is my favorite hot studio in the Durham area.

So many great options!! Hot yoga, warm yoga, really mellow wind-down yoga. Lots of choices for time (early morning, noon, and lots of weekday evening classes, and weekend classes too). The instructors are friendly and encouraging. The other class participants are nice! The facilities are great. If you forget your mat or your towel or your water, they’ve got you covered. Showers, lockers and convenient location! Don’t be afraid of hot yoga if you haven’t tried it. Really. It’s not scary and you’ll be surprised and pleased with how fast you progress and how good you feel once you make this part of your week.

I attended this class while working remotely....and while yes I should know that going into a "core class" is going to be more intense than your "sunday afternoon chill," this was 60 minutes, of non stop hot yoga, without one single break for child's pose. with masks on. afterwards then I got some bomb peruvian food across the street.

The energy and excitement at Midtown Yoga is contagious. Hot Yoga was a totally new experience for me, it's amazing. I am a newbie to yoga but felt super comfortable in all the classes I have attended. The Dynamic Duo aka Christy and Rachel are an inspiration with great energy. All the instructors I have had have been awesome, Kaylyn and Conner, you rock. On top of it all, the space is new and beautiful. Go try a class, you will be happy you did.

Midtown Yoga is truly awesome. I have never been that big into yoga before but have been trying to explore new things. Christy and Rachel made me feel so welcome and excited to be trying out classes. They are both obviously very passionate about their craft and they could not be nicer! The location itself is modern and beautiful. Each class I’ve taken so far has been incredible - the instructors were very kind, knowledgeable, and I never felt pushed to do anything past my comfort level. The studio was heated to just the right temperature, they have yoga mats available if you need one, and even provide you with a lavender-infused cool wet towel at the end of your practice. The music level is peaceful and not overpowering - very fitting and calming. I HIGHLY recommend checking out classes at this location no matter what stage of your fitness / yoga journey you’re currently in. You will feel so at home and glad you did!!

I absolutely love Midtown Yoga and am so happy that they’ve opened a place in Durham! The location is phenomenal and the studio itself is clean and beautiful. The instructors are truly one of a kind. All of the classes are so well taught, offering the opportunity for variations and modifications for a challenge while also promoting mindfulness. Whether you’re a yoga newbie or an experienced yogi, they are always welcoming and encourage you to do your best and make the class your own. Can’t say enough about how wonderful Midtown Yoga Durham is! You will not regret going!

I normal attend classes at Midtown yoga in North Hills but lucky for me this one just so happens to be right next to work. Their 12:00pm classes are amazing to get in during lunch and reset your day. They have showers and lockers and the space is just so so beautiful. The teachers are the same quality if not same people from studio in North Hills. They all are just so down to earth and friendly. My favorite part of the teachers is that they are all different but all equally as challenging. No class with ever be exactly the same which is great for growing in Yoga. This studio is really big and beautiful. There is plenty of other stuff in the area to grab a bite to eat before getting back to work. I will say Midtown is the only studio I found with consitant classes and great times that would fit any schedule. Just give it a try you won't regret it!
