Sometimes you don’t realize how good you had it until it’s gone. After moving from NC and trying out several different gyms, I can confidently say that this O2 location is hands down one of the best gyms I’ve been to in the U.S.

They have both a sauna and a steam room, which is extremely rare for a commercial gym -- let alone having both in the same facility. There’s also a solid boxing bag, an outdoor turf area, and two indoor turf spaces. Overall, it’s a fully equipped, well-rounded gym that covers pretty much everything you’d want.

In the interest of being fair, a couple of downsides I noticed a few years ago when I used to go there:
- The men’s locker room could sometimes get dirty and extremely unpleasant without regular upkeep
- Some machines would be out of order for extended periods, though this didn’t affect me much since I mostly box

I also tried the O2 at Brier Creek, which isn’t quite as nice as this location, but still better than most gyms I’ve been to.

Solid 5 stars from me

As someone who has had bad gym experiences, O2 Fitness is amazing has set the bar for any future gym. Not only is the gym itself beautiful, clean and everyone in there is friendly, they don’t try to pressure you or push you into buying a membership. Even during the trial period they give you the same professionalism and support as a member. Katie and Jake were great! They gave me a great tour and made sure I was knowledgeable of all of the benefits.

10/12/25 Edit: They have finally fixed/replaced some of the equipment that has been broken for months.
7/1/25 Edit:
Yep, I’m still coming here twice a week for the classes — they’re awesome. I have noticed they’re doing a better job with cleaning lately, which is great, though there’s still some room to improve.

What I still don’t get is why broken or worn-out equipment doesn’t get fixed or replaced. They did swap out a bunch of the spin bikes with newer used ones, which was nice. But take the rowers — there are four, and for the last nine months they’ve all been in rough shape. Two kind of worked until recently, and now we’re down to just one usable one.

Come on O2, please fix stuff and replace it when it’s clearly worn out. It really makes a difference!
-----+------------+---------------++++-
It's surprising to me how dirty and unkept this place is since it's billed as a "Signature" location. This is not my home o2, I go generally twice a week. Some things I noticed, broken equipment staying broken for weeks, specifically the spin bikes. The cleanliness of the locker room, flies, dirt , grime, hair, unknown substances in the shower. Blood stains on the handicap shower curtain. The handle for the shower was broken and leaking for at least a month (fixed now). Soap dispenser ripped off wall in bathroom area. Mop bucket collecting water from a ceiling leak, now going on two weeks. The steam room is out of order this week.
Positives- the staff ( at least the morning guy) is very nice. The sauna is very hot.
My suggestion would be to hire a cleaning crew to clean the gym overnight and get a maintenance person to fix things in a timely manner.

I've been a member of o2 for almost a decade, and largely had good things to say for most of it. I was paying $65/month, then was able to go though my health insurance and pay $40/month, which was great. I recently got an email saying they're cancelling that program and if I wanted to rejoin, the new rate would be $89/month + $69 annual fee.

That price increase would be easier to accept if the facilities hadn't been going downhill for the last few years. At the Durham "Signature" location in particular, 3 out of the 4 stairmasters are constantly broken, men's bathrooms are dirty/moldy, there are never enough clips, the parking situation is rough, etc. For about $25 more per month, I joined a different local gym that is actually clean, way less busy, has better equipment, and has a pool + hot tubs.

When a staff member emailed me saying my membership was being cancelled, I replied saying, "I've been an o2 Fitness member since 2016, but if that's the new rate, I think I'll explore other gym options and get back to you about whether I want to continue to be a member." They didn't reply. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We're motivated to do the exercises by seeing many folks in better shape than ourselves all around us at the gym.

I am revising (upward!) my prior review of O2 Fitness because of their very welcome responsiveness.

In the past, I was frustrated by their lack of functioning stairstep machines. However, this week they took all of the old machines away and put in five brand new ones!

Thank you very much for fixing this problem!

“Let’s put millions towards a very nice facility…then buy the worst gym equipment (precor) and not have enough benches”. This is not a dig at management or the staff (I’m sure they’re great) but more so at O2 as a whole. I was excited to check this place out until I saw the machines and experienced just how crowded it gets despite being pretty low tier.

Same equipment found at a planet fitness. So many "benefits" but they are all an upcharge on an already outrageous price point. Overvalued gym. A lot of equipment is old and when it breaks, management puts an "Out of Order" sign on it and just doesn't fix it. Everything is dirty and the bathrooms are a mess. The front desk is friendly most of the time but a couple times a month they really try to push their "extras". Definitely not worth the price for what is available at this gym.

I typically enjoy my workouts at O2 Fitness, but I was extremely disappointed during my most recent visit. While using the sauna, I saw not just one, but two roaches crawling around. This is not only unsanitary, but also unacceptable in a facility that promotes health and wellness. Saunas are supposed to be a clean and relaxing space, but this experience made me question the overall cleanliness and maintenance of the gym. I hope management takes immediate action to address the issue and ensure that all areas of the gym are properly cleaned and treated for pests.

7/27/25 update: This location is starting to show some wear, and unfortunately ownership doesn’t seem committed to proper upkeep. Numerous machines/equipment have been broken and out of service for months without being repaired. Local staff are very professional and pleasant, and in fact seem to be equally frustrated about the delayed repairs. It seems ownership is satisfied with current enrollment, which is high, without a concern for timely maintenance
1/10/24 update: Overall still a very nice facility with friendly staff. The reason for taking away a star is I’ve noticed two concerns over the past 6 months or so, (1) There is no maintenance of the locks on the lockers…both small ones in gym area and in locker room. Regardless of when you show up it’s really hard to find an available locker that can be locked. 2) It takes a really long time for broken equipment to be fixed and placed back into service.

3 years ago: Wonderful new facility conveniently located in the new University Hill development in SW Durham. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Edit: There's way too many wannabe influencers recording. It's so inconsiderate filming where you might get random people in your videos. We pay for the gym too but it feels like you have to dodge the phones secretly recording. We shouldn't have limited access of the gym just to avoid people filming.

Bathroom Cleanliness: locker rooms are clean, bathrooms are generally clean but often run out of paper towels or soap, once and a while the bathroom trash overflows, the bathroom doors/floors can get sticky.

Gym Cleanliness: generally clean but the studios get very dusty and sticky and aren't cleaned in between classes especially if classes are immediately after one another. The floor is generally clean but Some guests do not clean the equipment right after use. Paper towels for cleaning equipment run out some days.

Atmosphere: the atmosphere is neutral to friendly. The front staff vary some will greet/smile at you some will ignore you.

Kids club: Appears clean. Staff appear fine. We only use it once a week for 30 min to 1 hr. Our kiddo seems to like it. Limited hours and they no longer offer date night.

Classes: I'm only able to attend a few but I enjoy the core class and the yoga class. Core class is only 30 min. Yoga classes are beginner level 60 min. Classes fill up quickly so arrive early.

Equipment: Equipment are fine. There are a few that are broken and have yet to be fixed.

My only complaint is that the yoga studio is not as zen as it should be. It's small, It's always cold and it's on the bottom floor which means it gets really loud and noisy when people exercise on the second floor. There are a lot of weights being dropped and it's not zen. I've visited another 02 and that gym has a yoga studio on the upper floor away from the noise and it's heated and appropriately cleaned in comparison to this one.

Average cleanliness. Average amenities. Not the worst but not the best and it's closest to our house so it works.

Was a member for a little over a year. Bought into the personal training, which was AWESOME. But the maintenance of this place is bad and it is often dirty. The building has a lot of problems, there is rarely soap in the men's room and it is just generally gross. The roof doesn't stop leaking. It's either an absent landlord situation or o2 has to step up it's game. There are some things that o2 should control regarding hygiene that just isn't done.

When I moved the area and left, I went to cancel and they assured me that, as my account was an add-on to my fiancee's health plan, I would stop being billed alongside her. On reviewing my budget this month I found I had been billed repeatedly. When I called I was just told "I shouldn't have been told that"... Oh well, dispute the charges and move on.

Good gym overall - there's a solid variety of equipment, the locker rooms are cleaned regularly, and the staff is friendly.

There are some minor downsides - there's always a fair amount of cardio equipment out of commission. And it feels like more than half of the locks in the locker rooms (or at least the men's) are always stuck and unusable.

Also, I appreciate the trivia board near the entrance - props to whoever comes up with the questions.

I can’t say enough great things about this gym! First and foremost, the cleanliness is top-tier
every area, from the locker rooms to the equipment floor, is consistently spotless. You can tell the staff takes pride in maintaining a welcoming and hygienic space, which makes a huge difference in the overall experience.

The hours of operation are super convenient, especially for anyone with a busy or unpredictable schedule. Whether you’re an early riser or prefer to work out late, the gym is accessible when you need it most.

One of my favorite parts is the variety of workout classes offered. They make it easy to switch things up, stay motivated, and challenge your body in new ways. From strength training to cardio and recovery sessions, there’s something for everyone.

And let’s not forget the sauna and steam room total game changers for recovery and relaxation. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a tough workout or simply reset after a long day.

Highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a clean, versatile, and well-rounded fitness experience!

I used to love this gym but I’m honestly so over the shitty maintenance at this point. It’s the most expensive gym in the area at $70/month and yet there are ALWAYS broken machines - several major ones too - and they stay broken for weeks! Sometimes months! The only incline leg press in the whole gym has been broken for two months now. It’s seriously insane. And I’m not the only one who’s pissed about it - so many of my gym buds feel the same. Right now the padded squat machine is also broken, the diverging lat pulldown has been broken for over 6 weeks, the cable chest press is broken, and the calf raise has a loose bolt that I’ve reported several times a couple weeks ago and still no one has done anything. So is this gym worth the money? Hell no. Not sure where all the money goes. Do yourself a favor and find a gym where the management actually cares. P.s. they ask for feedback over email regularly and I’ve shared all of this with them several times over the last 2 years at this point and they say thank you and then do nothing.

I've been a guest with a family member about 5 times at this gym. I have absolutely loved clean amenities. All the staff has been very friendly and helpful. Zumba with Jose is simply wow. I love his enthusiasm and energy. I don't know all of the moves, but I keep moving, keep sweating, and leave wanting to keep dancing. I am having a ball at O2 Fitness Durham!

Leaky roof, broken and damaged equipment that go months without being fixed, disgusting men’s bathroom, broken lockers, outside flooring covered in dents and puddles, missing handles for cables, and lines out the door after 4 PM.

Oh and incessant calls/texts from employees to sign up for classes and PT even after asking them to stop. All for over 80 dollars a month. I have absolutely no idea how the insane price tag is justified. This has the potential to be an incredible gym, but the lack of maintenance is readily apparent. I suspect many of the reviews here are fake; in its current state this is a 3 star gym at best.

Also beware signing deals that lock you into a multi-year contract that you’d have to die or leave the country to get out of. Swindling and telemarketing seems to be the main way they to attract business.

I joined O2 a few months ago and love it. The facilities are clean and well maintained and the staff are so friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the 21-day free trial which is longer than most gyms offer and allowed me to see if this was a good fit for me. I love the barre class with Caitlyn and Pilates yoga with Li, I wish they had more of these classes throughout the week! Especially barre, which is offered once a week and is always packed!

Checked it out while traveling (4/8/25) and the young man at the front desk was really cool. While it was a pretty nice (beautiful) gym, there wasn't as much weightlifting equipment (mainly machines) as one would hope. Seemed like cardio equipment was the priority. Still got a great workout but prob. wouldn't visit again if in the area.

O2 is a great gym but its really frustrating how long their machines stay “broken” without any urgency to fix them. Theres no reason why a higher price point gym should be allowing stuff like this to happen. Do better yall….

For being a 'Signature' O2 Fitness, it does have a wide variety of equipment/machines. From treadmills, to free weights, this location does have it all. Unfortunately, if any of this equipment were to break, don't expect it to be fixed anytime soon. At the time of this review, some of the most popular/key machines have been broken for months: Platted Leg Press, Cable Lat Pulldown, Lat Pulldown Machine, and Assisted Dip Machine to name a few. The Lat Pulldown Machine has been broken since November (Nearly 4 months!) and the Platted Leg Press has been broken since January (2 months). Most of the time, there's only one machine, so you would think O2 would try to fix them quickly, right? Well guess again. All they do is place a small tag on it saying that it's taking a "rest day" with no expected time/date for when it'll be fixed. It can be very frustrating when you see the number of broken machines increase instead of decrease. For the smaller items, don't expect them to be replaced if damaged or worn, but to be repaired with duct tape (This is literally the case for one of the lat pulldown bars). For paying $64 a month, I would expect equipment to be better maintained, but I guess that's what you get for being the only reasonable gym in the Durham area. Overall, this location does the job, but could have some major improvements to live up to the 'Signature' brand.

O2 Fitness is a nice, clean gym at a good location for me. The spin class instructors are great. However, the spin bikes are not in good condition and ownership doesn't seem very interested in fixing them, despite a few months of complaints from class participants. I'd suggest taking advantage of the free trial to see if you can consistently find a good bike before you commit to a paid membership.

The other reviews cover most of the great things about this specific gym. Cleanliness, equipment options. Classes, etc. So I am going to focus my review on a perk I recently took advantage of.

When signing up, you get a free personal training session to work on whatever you would like. This ranges from building a workout plan to (in my case) fixing issues you have with a specific exercise to a ton of other coaching options. After over a year of lifting consistently, I worked with an employee named Mo to pinpoint what was causing me pain and subsequent weakness when trying to squat. Within 40 minutes he had found the issue(s) and put me on a path to be substantially better. I now have a warmup that will work the hip and adductor muscles I was (accidentally) ignoring, a plan to build up those muscles to properly squat, and some modifications I can make to my squat to continue drilling good habits while my body strengthens.

I can't recommend the experience enough. If the other trainers are half as good as Mo, then this is a world class facility!

The gym etiquette is undesirable at many levels. Specifically, their regulars don't wipe their sweat at the staff enables them by refusing to educate them, and their members squat on the machines on their phones during rush hours creating long waits at the machines.

O2 Fitness is an exceptional gym that offers a fantastic experience. The fitness classes, particularly Body Pump, Abs, and Stretch, are top-notch with excellent instructors. They strike the perfect balance, encouraging you to push your limits while offering modifications without any judgment. The facilities are impressive, especially the locker room and shower area. This convenience allows me to seamlessly fit workouts into my schedule before heading to work. What truly sets O2 Fitness apart is its staff. The staff there is great, from cleaning to management. The kids club staff are exceptional and are by far the best I’ve seen at any gym. I recently just moved here from New York, I was originally going to retro fitness back home but when I found out that there wasn't any in the area I was very nervous about having to find a new gym as many know how hard it is to find a comfortable environment in a new area that you aren't familiar is, I had the intentions of just doing the guest pass but when I came in the assistant manager Skye gave me an amazing tour not only was she very professional but she also made me feel very comfortable and welcomed during the tour that It was a very easy decision for me to join right on the spot. And I'm very happy with doing so as the staff is amazing and always has a smile on their face no matter what day or time it is!! Hands down my favorite place to be in Durham!! even though the gym could use some improvements with equipment and other stuff it's definitely still got everything I need in the gym!! It’s a super nice gym, aesthetically speaking. The quality of the actual gym equipment, layout, and overall functionality of the space is pretty bad though ngl. Way too many people for sure, and I’m not a fan of Precor machines in general, they are alwaaaays broken, and I don’t think they have a great set up for range of motion and body mechanics. I think this is more of a gym for people looking for “extras” like nice locker rooms, classes, PT, etc. which is not really what I’m looking for in a gym. For the high price point, I just don’t think it’s a good fit for me personally, but I can see the appeal for someone who utilizes those extra services regularly.

Pros:
The workout equipment is good.

The environment is nice and welcoming.

Cons:
There is no male custodian working on the weekends, so the men's locker room is really rough Sat/Sun.

Half of the locks don't work, so if you come at peak time you may not find a locker.

Summary: If MGMT would fix the staffing issues this would be a great gym, but until then, 3/5 stars.

*Revised to one star*

Per managements comments below, they were going to *make investments* to this gym. We haven't seen a new piece of equipment in years. Now 3/4 treadmills upstairs are broken.

For paying nearly a 100 a month having to wait for a treadmill because there limited and some are consistently down for repair is crazy work.

To pay that price for a gym and you can't workout when you want to makes no sense. Limited hours through the work week. Even less hours on the weekend. The hours suck for paying almost 100. Should definitely be 24 hours

The selling point of the amenities for why the price is what it is, YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY FOR!! So why is the price that high then. Because your offered 2 or so free trials then you have to pay additional cost to the already high membership

There are only 4 benches in the gym. 3 which you can make incline at different angles.

I'm confused as to why the price is what it is. It doesn't come with a trainer(you have to pay additional). It doesn't come with nutritional guidance( I think is a free 15 minute consultation then you have to pay additional). The group fitness classes are additional payments. You get 1 or 2 free stretches from their chiropractor/massuse I believe then maybe if your insurance can accept them it's free possibly.

The paintings on the walls are cool. Some of the equipment is decent. The area in Durham it's in been under reconstruction for a while and being gentrified so that is why the price is what it is. Definitely not worth if your work schedule switches alot between hours. Limited equipment so your routine that may be 45 min to a hour may be longer or you want finish completely if your pressed on time. People will stay on a machine for a 1 hour knowing it's only 1-2 in there and you'd be in there and a machine will be broke for over a week.

The hours are about the same as fitness connection but the price is 10x there's and the amenities that you pay extra for are the same accept you can play basketball at fitness connection free.

If this gym had 24 hours maybe you'd be ok with price because waking up to hit fasted cardio at 2am before work is clutch. Sometimes there not even open at the time the door stamps

DO BETTER. BUT I DOUBT ANYTHING WILL CHANGE SO THIS WILL BE MY LAST MONTH
