I was excited abouty membership with planet fitness. About two months in planet fittness started randomly charging my bank card with out my permission.
I agreed to 21$ a month and a yearly fee "dues" of 10$.
In all i was charged 25$ 49$ and 3.49$ on my second month. I didnt agree to any of that. When i called planet fitness i was told i was never made an offer for 21$ a month and i never would gotten a membership if that were true. I am highly disappointed. I know very well what i signed up for. I know i read when i signed it.
I signed that i would be notified before i was charged the 10 a year not 49$ on my second month. I tried to the 25$ over 21$ go. But i never agreed to 70 charges with out my notice or permission on my second month.

When i ask for a refund i was given my money but my membership was also cancled over yearly dues i havent even been there a year. Its been two months and i didnt agree to 49$ plus 3.49. i agreed to 10$ a year.

Its hard to belive these established companys shark us the way they do. They continue to take money over having good clean honest members

I have been a member of Planet Fitness at Durham, NC since October 2024. While the initial experience was enjoyable, my satisfaction decreased as the months passed, culminating in a frustrating cancellation process.

Pros

1. Equipment Maintenance: PF locations generally have the majority of equipment in place and well-maintained on a consistent schedule.

2. Cleanliness: The facility is always kept clean and tidy, despite the occasional user littering with discarded tissue papers.

Cons

1. Massage Chairs: The massage chairs are poorly maintained, frequently being out of service or ineffective when operational.

2. Overcrowding: The gyms are overcrowded, often necessitating the use of the Crowd Meter to plan workouts effectively.

3. Frustrating Cancellation Process (August- November 2025): This was the most annoying aspect of my membership.

* I relocated in Mid-August 2025 to a residence that included a fitness center and requested to cancel my PF membership. I was initially given two options: pay a $58 buyout fee, or wait until October 2025 for the one-year term to "fully mature," thereby avoiding the fee, and using a nearby PF location intermittently.

* I chose to wait. However, when I visited a PF location in Cary on October 22nd, the staff refused to cancel the membership without the $58 buyout fee, despite the one-year completion date being imminent.
While waiting to speak with a PF supervisor (who were only available during daytime hours, conflicting with my job schedule), I was incorrectly charged a $49 annual subscription fee for the upcoming year.
I was finally able to speak with staff at another PF location in Raleigh on November 8th, 2025, who successfully cancelled my membership without the buyout fee.

Suggestion -

It was a significant oversight on my part not to have cancelled immediately when I moved. By delaying the process, I ultimately lost $124 (approximately $25 x 3 months + $49 annual fee) instead of the initial $58 buyout fee.
I highly suggest using the regular PF membership instead of the Black Card if you decide to join.

It gets a bit crowded during peak hours, but the community atmosphere is nice. The crew seems to be constantly cleaning something and the Life Fitness equipment is light years ahead of the Matrix equipment at other locations. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Another horrible experience at a planet fitness! Apparently some of them require a truck parking pass to work out and only allowed 2hr 30min parking to use the facilities. I was hassled by parking lot security and police were called.

I’ve been coming here for a year now and not once have I been asked to verify my membership before using the massage beds. They’ll let anyone use them. Worst planet fitness I've ever been to. Staff were on their phones the whole time. Paper towels and cleaning spray were empty. Multiple machines out of use, and my personal favorite, terrible gym etiquette. People sitting on the 30 minute express machines for a full 30 minutes without moving. Will not be returning.

This place is very nice and the staff is so welcoming, but when I went to take a shower there was a cockroach I didn’t wanted to leave my shoes on the floor cause I wasn’t feeling comfortable with the roach coming in my shoes or back pack so I decided to not take a shower and Leave I told the front desk but they didn’t do anything.

Downside is they play the music in the Black Card Spa also - listening to Van Halen at full volume in what is supposed to be a relaxing environment is unfortunate. Johhny the shift lead should not be in a customer facing role. Johnny, instead of handling our cancellation properly like another employer later did, escalated, argued, and yelled at my wife. Even after we were being helped by another employee for the same thing with out any issue, Johnny came back and tried to start in on it again. I told him that I didn't want a conflict with him and ignored him. Johnny then immediately began questioning the employee as to why they were helping us "You want to help them, why?". He did not want her to help us.

Johnny then went over to another customer signing up for the massage chairs to tell them how awful we were and how loud we had been, and of the scene that had been caused, of course only telling them how considerate and reasonable he had been. This could not have been further from the truth but I did not say anything to him because I did not want to get him started again. I ignored it. This man does not belong talking to customers if he can't handle resolving a customer cancellation or making a ticket to hand to a manager for something he cannot approve. He could not help but fly into a rage when all that was being asked for was an alternative to driving two hours to further discuss this. Even then afterward still he tried to stop us from getting help with another employee and bad mouthed us to other customers. Several times when he walked away we heard coworkers refer to him as a hot head, I am guessing this is not the first time he's done this or something similar.

The long version with context was that I asked to cancel, Johnny set it up to cancel and asked me to sign. I mentioned that I had tried to cancel before and found that I had to do it in person which delayed my ability to cancel and would like that last charge returned. I have been in another city and it was not possible to come an hour away to cancel until today. Johnny said that it is not company policy and that I should just sign. I said that I did not want to sign because I wanted my last month back since I would have cancelled much earlier and I had not visited this gym in months. Johnny said that I would have to come back tomorrow to see a manager. I responded that I did not have time to drive for two hours tomorrow over this as second time and would rather do it over the phone. This is when Johhny started escalating. First he insisted that I sign or get out, then he started yelling at my wife, then he started questioning why I should get the money back when it was charged on the 17th and it was now the 22nd. I told him that I tried to cancel months ago but was not able to do it online or even at another location. Johnny continued to raise his voice, then when my wife yelled back he immediately asked us to leave, and we did. We came back when another employee offered to help us instead. She took our information down and said the manager would reach out. They had a book specifically for this purpose. Johnny escalated for nothing, he had a ready solution he could have used. Instead of providing a solution he decided to be extremely combative.

To be clear I do not agree with the company policy and the beginning issue is with that. Past that all I was asking for was an alternative to driving back out to discuss the last months charge. Johnny was absolutely out of line the way he spoke to me and my wife. Its 20 bucks I won't even be that upset if I ultimately don't get it, but Johnny is just not suited for customer service.

The company policy is that cancellations must be done in person at the office you signed up at. You can't even cancel online, even though you can upgrade your plan online. The only reason for this is so that it is harder to cancel. They obviously have the infrastructure to make online cancellations possible. I otherwise enjoyed this gym and liked every other person I have interacted with. Just not Johnny. Please do not let this man interact with customers he cannot control his temper.

Planet Fitness is very modern, it seems everything has been thought of to make a member feel welcome and comfortable. From easy phone app check-in to the smiling greeters behind the counter. There's top-notch equipment of every kind and each machine has a picture showing you exactly what area of the body you're working on. The scan label featured on the equipment allows you to use your phone to see the correct way to use the equipment. There are so many ways to get and maintain a high fitness level, you'll never get bored, that's for sure! The BIG screen tv's everywhere make the workouts seem to go faster and the music is crazy good! Thirsty, forgot your drink, they've got you covered with drinks available too. Also, the quality and design of the bathrooms with lockers is great but having the availability of a shower right after a workout is priceless! Making it an easy decision to keep coming even when the schedule is tight and you have to go to work (or school) right after exercising. I certainly look forward to coming! This location is always dirty, and broken equipment stays broken for weeks. Particularly the locker rooms/showers. Always trash on the floors, showers are rarely cleaned (last week, someone seemingly cut their hair in the shower, the hair stayed on the shower floor for 3 days, and not just a little hair, clumps, a lot). When compared with other locations I’ve been to (Apex/Cary, S Raleigh, etc.) the Durham location is poorly taken care of and managed. But that seems par for the course with most businesses in Durham. If it’s a franchise or chain in Durham, expect poor service. “You get what you tolerate”.

I love this gym. There’s plenty of equipment so you don’t have to wait, there’s plenty of sanitation post in visible sight, there’s several bathroom stalls so they are readily available when needed, very clean. However, if you’re looking to power lift or do anything requiring a barbell you are out of luck considering they don’t have a single one in the entire gym. It’s pretty crazy that a gym of that size does not have barbells. Additionally, the staff is pretty hit or miss. Half the time there is no one at the front counter and if there is someone they pay you no mind… I’m pretty sure I could’ve just walked in there without a membership and no one would’ve noticed.
