Gym closed down four days after I got my gym membership which I’m not even mad about because I understand it’s for everybody’s safety. What I am mad about is that they had the time to call me to sell their classes two days ago but don’t have the time to call me to let me know they are closed. I had to go to the door to find out.

I have been a member for about 3 to 4 months and I enjoy just watching the improvements that have happened since I joined. I love the warm water message chairs. I have referred my friends and the are members too. So we can workout with the Les Mills group fitness training. Oh and they have a Live DJ on Friday nights around 6pm.

One year update and this is still my favorite place to workout!

I have never worked out in my life but wanted to get into shape and establish some healthier patterns with my 40th birthday looming. I visited a couple gyms in Durham (Planet Fitness and Millennium) before checking out Retro. I LOVED how open and and airy Retro was. The tall ceiling and the cardio movie theater are really cool! The staff was very friendly and they had a ton of free weights and machines, and cadio equipment. It is clean and not hot and stuffy - a huge fan keeps the air moving! The equipment is well taken care of and the location is convenient. I have been working out regularly (3 times a week) for the past few months and have loved it more with each passing week! It has a really accessible vibe with people from all walks of life and varying gym experience. I have not felt intimidated or out of place even though I am a tall, skinny, weak dude! :) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GYM!

Unmaintained and poor communication. I've been a member for a little while now, but it didn't take long to identify all of the problem areas. People don't rerack their weights, the women's facilities aren't maintained, and they don't have a manager on site to address issues (and staff aren't trained to do basic functions like returning a locker space). I'm very disappointed in this gym; luckily a different gym is opening across the street.

Best gym in the area hands down. It’s clean, great setup of equipment, cardio that’s upstairs that overlooks the gym, and overall an easy place to get a good lift. Another bonus is the size of the place; it’s spaced out with a long turf as well for any HIIT training plus extra rooms for classes, spinning, and more. I came here everyday for my vacation and loved how accessible it was to get my workout in and the friendly staff. Karol was welcoming when I was checking in and her staff as well asked myself and my fiancé about New Jersey (which is where we’re from) and about thanksgiving. It was nice for them to greet us and make us feel welcome here. Great gym, service, and equipment, a must stop for any athlete. I will definitely be coming back next time i’m In North Carolina!

when Karol /Carol (not sure how her name is spelled) signed me up for my membership she told me there wasn’t any cancellation fee. I vividly asked that question coz I didn’t want to have to deal with the hassle of cancellation from my other gym since I travel a lot for work and knew I wasn’t staying there very long... only for me to be told when I wanted to cancel that I’ll be charged $150. Spoke with Ben, and all he could tell me was “Sorry you were misinformed but that’s company policy”. Of course he’d say that coz Carol is his boss. FYI Ben, there’s no difference between a lying charlatan and someone who engages in willful misinformation just to make a sale. Can’t believe she is allowed to run a business.

I have been a member here thanks to the client you guys canceled the membership for no reason and was called the police as if he had done something bad making his reputation look bad. I’m very unhappy with how management is handling this situation of a 2 year old in child care they are not being profesional at all. I have known this couple for a while now and they are really good people and kids are kids if you are a parent you know toddlers just want to be playing around and they do not want to be sitting and that’s what the sitters suppose to be watching, as a client I’m asking for the owner to have a talk with the member because this was not the correct way to handle this situation management Karol has not been complying with the policy just decided to take a shortcut and cancel this persons membership with out looking for alternatives.Manager at this location needs more training apparently she can’t handle this...

I had the worst experience at this gym also I been a member here since my friend joined this gym and we both workout together thats why I join because of my friend. When I opened my account with retro I told Karol the manager clearly that it was going to be under my name but the billing information was going to be with my husband card what she did was created the account under my husband name so when I went to workout they told me that I couldn’t go in without my husband so I had to change the name of the account to my name she charged me $25 for her mistake and she was yelling at me saying that it was my fault that I was the one that didn’t listen basically talking to me like I was her kid in front of every customer that was walking in. Very rude unprofessional customer service and that’s why I barely go to the gym to not have to deal with her angry dog face since unfortunately I’m stuck with this contract !! Not all employees are rude I would suggest you stay away from Laravia the girl with the braids and Karol the manager they have the worst attitudes I see why they get along so well. Laravia wanna be boss rude as idk what talks to employees really bad in front of customers which makes this place look really bad and ghetto...but yes guys think twice before joining this gym!

Need to find a workout while on vacation. This is an excellent facility with all the equipment that I need. I waz rather impressed with the variety of machines and free weight equipment they had. Trap bars, kettle bells, free weighs and dumbells to 120lbs. The equipment was in good shape, facility very clean and the customer service saw great. In addition, the day passes were 10 dollars with is unheard off to use such a quality facility. If you ever are in Raleigh and need to workout, you need to go here.

If I have an issue I can usually look towards management for help.
Well I didn’t feel that way at this gym. Karol the manager signed me up for a membership and didn't share crucial information about the policy.
I’ve had such a difficult time bringing my plus one and even bribed to leave money in the tip jar to let him in the gym.
When I talked to Carol about it, she acted like it was all my fault for not knowing the policy. May I remind you the information she lacked to share with me. More then once my plus one had to leave and wasn’t allowed access to the gym.
Finally I just decided to cancel my membership. I just feel like she isn’t an honest person and I could be wrong, but that how she made me feel.
Anyways, I’m not saying don’t join this gym, I’m just leaving a review of my experience.

Good for the price. I've been a member for little under a year now and am fairly satisfied. There's plenty of equipment, whether for weightlifting or cardio. Not as crowded compared to other gyms in the area. Machines are in good condition and usually get fixed pretty quickly. They offer a variety of classes, with Cycle Jam (spin class) being my personal favorite. You can't get that kind of intense workout with good music and a motivating instructor elsewhere. Anyone who says otherwise is probably a snobby Les Mills instructor speaking out of jealousy. Smoothie bar protein drinks are tasty and filling. I recommend the Mocha with Peanut Butter. Staff is friendly and approachable. Overall, a good bang for your buck!

I really like this gym and have used it during visits with my sister. It would be a 5 star rating; however, I was told i could not buy a second 5 day pass after my first one expired (i bought this several months ago). I never post reviews but I always leave Retro Fitness happy and glad I joined. The staff are awesome and friendly, but in the cool, not overbearing way. Special shout out to Cameron! I love taking advantage of my monthly package, including the hydro massage chairs and spinning classes. This gym offers all the machines I could want, is clean, and offers plenty of space for stretching and free weights, which is so important (and often lacking in other gyms). Visiting a friend in Durham and found this place on line. Stopped in and bought a day pass and was blown away. The place looks slightly cheesy because it’s all red and yellow but it’s the best equipped gym I’ve ever been too. Had everything I was looking for. Generally clean. Newer machines. The place is nice, I liked it. Although I am very displeased with the paperwork. I’ve been a member for 3 months, and recently had a knee injury which would put me away from the gym for some time, for which I decided to cancel my membership, because I probably wouldn’t be using it for some time. When I came in to cancel my membership, I was told at that, at that very moment, that I would have to pay a percentage of my remaining months, 25% of 8 months plus the $19.99 of the next billing month in order to cancel. This is no hassle free or anything like that, they do not tell you that when you sign up, they do not explain anything about it, until you are actually there and they’re trying to get your money. At the end, it was my mistake for not reading the small letters. I will be moving my money to a different gym once I’m ready to hit the gym again, and will never return to a retro fitness ever again.

Here’s my full story of Retro Fitness:

Although it’s a lovely facility with top notch equipment in a great smoothie bar, the customer service and billing side is something you will really need to look out for before signing the contract. Upon signing, they will not tell you that you will later be assessed an annual membership fee, depending on when you sign up. It was about believe about $40 or so. Also, if you want to cancel your contract early, you will be assessed 25 percent of the remaining balance of your contract. On top of any late fees are things that come up. If your card doesn’t charge for the amount, You will be assessed a $19.50 late fee. The whole customer service and billing side has displeasure me, which is why I give the stars for this review. Ultimately, even after reading the contract, you still aren’t told about the charges that are coming. Know what you’re getting into before you sign.

It's really hard to resolve anything with management. When I joined the gym they offered a large number of LES MILLs classes. They also promised to expand the classes to include before work options. Half way into the year they discontinued all LES MILLS classes and never offered anything early. I give the gym three stars only because the equipment is new.

Same thing happened to me as another reviewer. I asked to cancel my account back in June since I was moving out of the country. Once by going in person and leaving a note with the front desk and twice calling. I also called them twice and emailed them two days ago and no reply from the management. The front desk people are doing their best to help me, but they don't have the authority to cancel my account. It's been six months and they're still charging me. I wouldn't join this gym unless you plan to continue to be with them until the end of time.

Never had anything but a great experience here! There's not an overly pretentious gym culture. The equipment is clean and new and it's never overly crowded. Not to mention there is a movie theater with cardio equipment in it where they frequently play new or even R rated movies! What more could you ask for?

The worst customer service that I ever experienced in my life so far, especially that guy during the night shift, tried to greet him twice he don't respond back at all, definitely I'm looking for another Gym sooner than later.

Bad first: these people are crooks!!!!!! They keep auto billing my account and when I call to ask why, the staff is always just as confused as I am! They never give you a copy of your contact so that way they can sneak charges in your card without warnings.. Good: the mixxedfit class is awesome but they only have it late in the afternoon

I signed up at the beginning of the yr when they were offering their $1 special. I was assured that they'd make the child care area as nice as the rest of the gym so I joined and waited......... a few months later it seemed the childcare area got worse so I called to cancel didn't think anything of it until I looked at my statements. I then again called come in they say we've fixed it, since I'm still under contract I still get billed either way even though I've not been in there since Feb/Mar.Its now July and still getting billed. Ugh this place sucks.

The "management" staff was grossly UNPROFESSIONAL and RUDE and appeared to LACK CONFIDENCE in themselves. I would prefer jump roping barefoot on glass then sliding down a razor blade into an alcohol river, than to take up residence for an hour in such a distasteful workout environment.

I've been waiting for a few months for more classes. Preferable spin classes! There are only like 4 offered the entire week and they're all after 6:00pm????? I was promised lists more variety in
times...disappointed..probably going to cancel

Goodness gracious don't ever try to cancel your membership. I've been trying to cancel it for over a month now!! I've contacted the gym, the number associated with the withdrawal on my statement, left a voicemail at the corporate office, and sent several requests on their website, all to no avail. Now that i've had so much trouble I Googled it and i'm not the only one! Beware unless you want to be auto billed forever!!!
