The Workhouse is so much more than a gym — it’s a community. It’s a place focused on fitness, growth, and the overall well-being of every member. The workouts never get easier, but you get better and stronger: physically, mentally, and spiritually. I genuinely look forward to each session. The coaches and the people around me inspire me to keep pushing, and being there is often the highlight of my day.
The equipment is truly best-in-class, the facility is upscale, and the cleanliness is consistently A+. The coaches and owners lead by example — they inspire, encourage, and care about everyone who walks through the doors. I’m grateful to be a member of The Workhouse.

Fantastic gym! Friendly, professional coaches and an awesome community. My cardio, mobility, and functional strength have completely leveled up since joining in Feb 2025. It’s also worth mentioning that the place is always super clean and well-kept. If you're looking for a gym, I highly recommend trying out Workhouse!

I moved here in June and have been going to this gym three days a week ever since. It’s a social environment, but not “culty” or too competitive. They meet you where you are, which is exactly what I was looking for. It feels like the coaches enjoy their jobs and the classes are filled with very diverse groups of people. The classes I’ve been to are always full or nearly so, but it’s controlled so it’s never crowded. All of the equipment is insanely nice and well maintained. Everything feels brand new and very clean. I’m very happy with my membership.

Workhouse is the best! I've done other fitness studios around town but always plateau or lose interest. That's not possible at Workhouse - the training blocks and 3 week rotations keep some variety while making sure your lifting enough of the same muscle groups to really make progress. The trainers and owner are a perfect mix of meeting you where you are while pushing you to be the best version of yourself. You're allowed to have a bad day or modify for injury, but they won't let you do less than they know your capable of. While tough during the workouts, they also make it a point to learn about you, connect you with members with the same goals, host awesome events, and build a great community
I always like to train super athletically but get overwhelmed with programming my own main lifts and accessory lifts and trying to do everything while not overdoing it. The staff at Workhouse do all of that for you with thoughtful, intentional programing, and benchmarks. I could not ask for a better place to workout in Winston but warning: only come by if you want to be pushed to get in the best shape of your life.

I joined Workhouse about a month ago and it was the best decision I’ve made in a long time. Top of the line Rogue equipment, great coaches, fun and welcoming environment, etc. The scheduling app is great, easy to use.But the best part for me is that I don’t have to think. I just show up and lift. They track your max weights across the lifts and other metrics, tell you what to load on the bar and off you go. If you’re looking for help getting stronger, this is the place.

Great gym to be apart of. In the year and a half that I've been at the gym I've seen results with significant increase in weight able to life and in much better shape.
What I've come to appreciate about the gym is 2 fold. 1) A trainer is going to host the class. While it is not 1:1 advice, they are going to ensure your form is right and push you to do better. 2) The workouts are set up beforehand, just show up and be ready to workout.
As a more personalized gym, do be prepared for a higher cost. You have to commit several times a week to make it worth it. Otherwise, just join the Y.

By far some of the best programming and coaching I have experienced. Being on the north side of 50 (cough, cough), I am gaining strength and being pushed to hit PRs and limits I didn’t think I would see after my 40’s. I started at the Workhouse Fitness, last winter with Nicole as my PT to work with her to build up my strength to pass my ROTC Fitness test. Not only was she incredibly friendly, kind, and smart she helped me pass with flying colors. After passing I joined the group fitness class. As much as I loved working one on one with Nicole, the group fitness has been my favorite. Nina, Hadrian, Robbie, and Nicole teach these classes with a positive attitude and they push you to lift heavy and work hard. I’ve never been someone who is nervous to work out in a group, but if you were, there is nothing to worry about! Everyone at the gym is friendly, regardless of age, and has a common goal to push themselves. My favorite thing about Workhouse is that you actually gain strength because of the thoroughly thought out workout program. Which is also an added plus you don’t have to worry about creating your own program. ;) Although challenging, I’ve seen the biggest increase in my strength. I also appreciate that it is located in the middle of downtown, which is incredibly convenient, and there is no reason to miss a workout class as they range from 5am-6:45pm. If you’re thinking of a gym you’ll look forward to going to each week, the Workhouse Fitness is for you!

The Workhouse Fitness is not like any gym I’ve ever been to. Everyone does the same workout but at their own level, so I never feel judged or like I can’t keep up. The workouts are always challenging and well thought out, and Robbie along with the other instructors are incredibly knowledgeable—always ready with modifications when needed. The environment, the people, and the atmosphere are amazing. I’ve made great new friends and actually look forward to coming every morning!
I used to run almost every day, but I kept getting injuries and felt tired and weak. After being at The Workhouse for a little over a year, I feel stronger and healthier than I have in a long time. Lifting weights was never my thing before, but this place has truly helped me learn to love it.

I’ve been attending group fitness classes here for about a year and a half now and have nothing but great things to say about the gym, the coaches, and the people that attend. You’re encouraged to listen to your body but to also push it to your full potential. The Workhouse provides a safe and welcoming space to move your body and track your progress in a way that makes you feel empowered. With new blocks every few months you’re continuously learning new workouts and never feel stagnant. I recommend people from all fitness levels to give this gym a try, you’ll be surprised at what your body is capable of.

I've been going to The Workhouse for about a year now, and it's been an awesome experience. From day one, everyone has been super welcoming and encouraging. I came in with little experience - had never used more than a 20lb dumbbell - and really had no idea what I was doing. The coaches were all great about helping me learn proper form and movement.
What I really like is how the workouts are planned. They build from week to week in a way that makes sense and helps you actually make progress. There's enough variety to keep it interesting, but it never feels random or gimmicky - just smart, effective training.

I’ve been to many awesome gyms in the Winston area, and this next comment is no shade to them but Workhouse is by far my favorite. Workhouse has all of the benefits I was looking for in a gym, which include strength training, barbells and challenging workouts with an emphasis on proper mechanics and personal progress. The cherry on top for me is the positive atmosphere and friendly group of people that workout here. I read that one of their mottos is “no egos, just results” and I tell you they are true to their word. The gym is also clean and aesthetically appealing which is also nice. Robbie the owner is very knowledgeable and approachable. All of the coaches are awesome to work with! I recommend this gym.

I have done just about every type of group fitness workout (HIIT, CrossFit, etc.), and The Workhouse is unlike any of them. The workouts are well designed and very effective. The class size gives a more personal training feel where your individual progress is tracked, and the coaches are able to guide and push members to get the best workout possible. There are members of all ages and fitness levels and everyone is welcoming and encouraging. Trying a new gym can be intimidating but everyone at The Workhouse makes it very easy to get started and you’ll start seeing results in no time. Cannot recommend this place enough!

The best gym hands down. I was nervous to start working out again after having my baby, but that quickly turned to excitement. Classes are big enough that there is energy and camaraderie, and small enough that you have your own space and receive great personal attention/training. Workouts are intense and expertly-crafted. Trainers are attentive — will push you to work your hardest while staying on top of technique and safety. I am not a gym person, but I saw a video of a friend using the battling ropes and had to try a class! Now I love Workhouse. It's clean, very welcoming, and the group classes leave me feeling challenged but not overwhelmed. I have seen myself improve over time and I love the energy boost I get post workout!
However, as a mom of a young toddler, the class times are a challenge. I wish there were more morning class offerings.

I started at The Workhouse at the end of 2024 after hearing about it from some buddies. I did not know what to expect but from the first day, it has been nothing short of phenomenal. It allows you to come in and complete an hour workout that has been precisely thought out for a perfect combination of strength, functionality, and cardio. You may say to yourself, “it’s just like other places”, but I assure you it is way more than that. The competitiveness and family oriented folks that are part of this gym make it incredible. The Workhouse Fitness is the perfect mix of sweat, laughs, and randomness! Robbie’s workouts are intense—think Ski Ergs, sled pulls, EMOM lifts, and much more that’ll leave your legs (and arms) begging for mercy. But the real kicker? His infamous Question of the Day. One minute you’re mid-sled push, the next you’re debating, “If you could only communicate using animal sounds, which one would you pick?”

You should do this.
I'm 54, empty nest, sooooo not a former athlete. The years of 'appearance' wishes, revenge events, weight targets, or PR goals are far behind me.
Twenty-five years from now I want to: walk up 3 flights of stairs and / or a few miles at a time without wanting to die, be able to get up off the floor (where I've done real pushups), balance easily enough to put on socks standing up, and carry 50 pounds plus of grandchild or large dog when required.
Some of my gorgeous graduate school age fitness classmates probably can't fathom those truly functional fitness goals, but anyone over 45 can, and I have seen an alternate future with older family members.. and frankly even younger friends. At some point you realize real self care is showing up consistently.
Other reviews will tell you how 20 - 40 year old non-strangers to fitness love Workhouse, but I will tell you as someone who has done all the things.. and stopped doing all the things... that I like it better than personal training because I am inspired by all the bad-assery around me (many of whom were born around the same time as me). I'm willing to get up at 5:30AM for it. There is no higher compliment.
Robbie and Nicole set the tone for a friendly and fun workout but will also support you by keeping you accountable and having high expectations.
You should do this.

My husband and I run small businesses, and I have run 1 of our small businesses for the last 1.5 years....During this time I did not prioritize myself, my health, or my fitness - it is challenging to do so now! But I truly look forward to the classes and the people that show up.
The Workhouse has not only wholeheartedly supported our small business, but also given me (and my husband) a space to release the day, the stress, and given us a supportive group of hard-working, diverse humans to sweat beside. I have worked out at many studios in WS (and beyond) and The Workhouse has been the most effective training for us both, and also the most clean space. The Workhouse Team listens to member wants/needs with a careful ear, and when "challenged" with a member request they react with empathy, best interest of member, and best interest of all other current, and future members. I truly give credit to The Workhouse for the change I've seen in my body (mentally and physically) and, well, I am a social butterfly often and I know others feel the same here...It's easy to find a crew to crush with and they do a great job of creating smart programs to achieve a strengthened body, in every aspect.
I am really glad The Workhouse is here. Honestly can't say where I'd be mentally or physically if it were not for them. We don't have anything in WS like it, and you'd be doing yourself a real disservice not to join....

I started at The Workhouse Fitness about 8 months after I began graduate school. During those 8 months, I had not taken care of myself and felt bad both physically and mentally. I was nervous to enter a more structured gym with people who I knew would be far above my fitness capabilities. From the first day that I started, in probably the worst shape of my life, I was welcomed with open arms. Robbie, the trainers, and the other members of the gym constantly encouraged me and noted progress which motivated me to keep coming back. They also are able to tailor workouts to every skill level so that it was challenging then, and remains challenging now almost a year later. I have always struggled with maintaining a workout routine but Robbie helped me change that. The Workhouse fosters a culture that keeps you consistent and determined to keep improving. On top of that, the gym is clean and he frequently puts money into new equipment to better the space. I cannot say enough positive things about this gym and I truly think it is one of the best things that has happened to me over the past year.

I joined Workhouse Fitness Thanksgiving week - giving me one more exciting thing to be grateful this year! As a woman in my 50ties, I've been looking for a workout that is challenging and FUN with trainers who support my goals, push me to do my best, spend time on group stretching and explain proper form for solid results and injury prevention. In the short time that I've been at Workhouse Fitness, I feel like I've found just what I was looking for - including a supportive community among members (who are chatty and happy even in the early morning classes), a large, clean, BEAUTIFUL gym and a solid, sweaty workout that will help support my health and fitness goals. AND - it's locally owned (well - Coach Robbie is from Scotland, but he's a Wake grad who has relocated to Winston. As an added bonus, his parents also just moved to Winston this summer. They work out at the gym and are delightfully kind, funny and supportive)!

I’ve recently moved to Winston-Salem and was looking for a gym to get back into fitness. I played soccer for many years and have been struggling to find a place to gain consistency, accountability, and growth in the gym. The Workhouse Fitness has been that place for me and more! I’ve only been going here for 6 weeks now, but I’ve already seen improvement in my strength, stability, and overall health both mentally and physically. For once, I’ve started to look forward to going to the gym! The environment is great as well, with supportive coaches and other athletes that make it feel like a personal training session, but with group support. Oh my stars, where shall I begin?! I’m a wife, mom, and educator- so I had all the excuses ready to avoid the gym. Finally being fed up with getting older and unable to hold myself accountable, I signed up and Robbie called me within 30 minutes on a Sunday. I was part of a workout class the next day. It left no room for excuses. Since then I haven’t looked back. I have been part of The Workhouse for about 3 weeks and I’m hooked!
This was an approach to fitness I was too nervous to try. Each class is full of people at different levels of fitness/strength. The coaches keep track of everyone’s progress to individualize what each person needs to work on. For a newbie like me, this helps tremendously.
I’m an introvert and extremely uncoordinated. The coaches and other members have encouraged and supported me every step. From advice, fist bumps, and a giggle when I get clumsy (all in good humor).
After each class, I’m shocked with how I went a few steps further to push my fitness. I feel better and looking in the mirror is getting less daunting. This gym makes you work and I NEED that or the excuses start flowing.
The coaches are honest and provide all kinds of support, no matter how new you are to this type of gym.

It is on my conscience to share my experience in an objective way out of fairness to WHF while simultaneously letting others know what may happen if you provide feedback with any inkling of negativity, which is exactly what I did (in a very strong attempt to remain polite and private), and I’ve ended up w/ a revoked membership and on Robbie’s banned list, so now I’m sharing publicly. So, if you’d like to remain a member, learn from my mistake, don’t make Robbie upset and keep it to yourself, as you clearly only get one shot with him. The hypocrisy was incredibly apparent, as Robbie expressed that he did not like the feedback that I shared to him privately, yet I know him as someone who openly supports things like freedom of speech. And I thought these were things he'd like to know.
I started going to WHF to test workouts in fall 2022. I joined as a founding member shortly after & was excited. I felt like I had developed a friendship with Robbie, & he was always pushing me towards positive progress in the gym. Regrettably, I ended up taking a break Apr-Sept of 2023 d/t work obligations, but I re-joined roughly Mid-sept. I was eager to jump back in. It was a little different upon my return, which took some getting used to! There were a few things I was questioning, and I observed things that were different to me than before, but ultimately, it was acceptable for the current cost ($169/month). I had made a mental note to reach out to Robbie to discuss a few concerns that I had. However, I was no longer taking a class that Robbie was present at, which limited my in-person interactions with him significantly making it challenging to catch him to let him know I’d like to meet. After a recent email notification post-thanksgiving, & on cyber mon, of an upcoming monthly increase in our membership fees (awkward timing), I used a few of my observations (upon returning) as overall feedback and justification to Robbie as to why I was not interested in continuing my membership post-price increase ($185 w/ CC, cheaper w/ ACH). I also shared an idea I had of grandfathering current members into the $169 cost. Robbie’s response was vague. He stated my membership would end on 12/12 without acknowledging much else. I was disappointed in the response & although not stated it felt like it was a “don’t let the door hit ya on the way out” vibe. So, I let him know accordingly, while my attempt was slightly impacted by frustration and disappointment, I tried to keep it reasonable and made sure to mention that this isn’t just me - I’ve heard murmurs of others feeling similarly. Robbie let me know he had refunded my last payment with immediate effect. I’m not an idiot, but it did not click in my head that this was him revoking my membership. Either way, I was still 100% under the impression I had until 12/12 to participate. I showed up for today’s class and as soon as Robbie saw me he B-lined towards me, cutting me off before I even had one foot in the door, and said something along the lines of, no no no go outside (like I’m a dog), and proceeded to tell me that his email was abundantly clear that I am no longer welcome at this gym. He then made it clear that he was not sure what I expected after I made criticisms directly to him (via email, not ideal I’ll admit) about a few of my experiences recently. After a few other exchanged words, I left the gym in tears as I was completely and totally shocked that someone who I thought was my friend, and whose business I had been actively supporting for a while now was treating me this way. I commute to the gym from GBO so I would NOT waste an hour of my day driving if I did not legitimately think I still had a membership. All in all, despite being a consistently non-problematic, friendly, and punctual member of this gym and NEVER causing any issues to Robbie this is where I have ended up after a short email thread w/ feedback & concerns & in the midst of a price increase that caught me off-guard.

I joined this gym because I wanted a class based workout, but I didn’t want something focused on cardio. I’m so grateful for Workhouse filling in a gap in the Winston-Salem fitness market and offering both class and strength training combined into one wonderful program. Having minimal experience with a squat rack, the coaches have been great at working with where I’m at. You will be accommodated but you WILL get pushed. And the community is great. After an embarrassingly long gym hiatus to have three kids, I decided it was time to start moving my body again, but I was very particular about what type of gym I wanted to join. When I first met with Robbie, he took the time to explain the Workhouse method and made sure he knew my goals and self-perceived limitations, my history of injuries, and what movements were painful for me. For those who want a more in-depth review:
The Coaches: Robbie, Emily, and Bianca are absolutely phenomenal, and it is clear they are passionate and educated about what they are doing. These coaches are genuinely invested in your fitness journey. Even with 16 people in a workout, they are highly attentive to each individual. Whether helping you with your form or switching one exercise for another based on your abilities, they are constantly paying attention and mindful of what is best for you. They are just as excited as you to see you succeed and progress.
The Program: Workhouse's 12-week program is expertly crafted. With one-rep max testing for core lifts at the start and at check-ins throughout, seeing your progress is simple. The circuit-style workouts are perfectly paced to keep your heart rate up and leave room for you to decide your intensity for the day. Cardio days are challenging but fun, especially on Saturdays where you work out with partners, and the exercises become a game with a mission you accomplish together. The exercises are planned and coordinated so well, which allows you to spend less time setting up and more time getting that pump.
The Equipment: The gym is stocked with brand-new Rogue Fitness equipment. They have everything you could possibly need to complete each exercise quickly and effectively. The gym layout is maximized with ample space for going up and down the turf section during cardio-heavy stations and quickly switching out weights at the racks without bumping into others. I've been a part of Workhouse Fitness for over a month now and have really enjoyed my experience so far. As someone who has had very little experience in strength training, the coaches do a great job walking you through each exercise and are focused on form and safety. The best gym in Winston and it’s not even close!
I have tried many gyms in town (and out of town) and this is by far the best I’ve found. In moving from a bigger city, I’ve been looking for a functional fitness gym and this checks all the boxes.
If you want to get stronger, be fit, learn proper technique, and meet amazing people while doing it, try Workhouse.
The classes start with a warmup and end with a cool down stretch which are both important to me. The trainers focus on your form and make adjustments throughout each exercise to prevent injury and suggest modifications and weights as needed.
You can pick your weight and intensity for each workout so it can be tailored no matter your fitness level.

The Workhouse is an incredible gym that I would highly recommend to individuals of all fitness levels. The coaches work one-on-one to understand your personal goals, past injuries, etc to customize your workout, and are able to modify or ramp up movements as needed. In addition to the awesome workouts and top of the line equipment, one of my favorite parts about this gym is the PR (Personal Record) Bell! If you’re debating joining a gym, this is it. I had never done any strength training before this and didn’t know where to start on my own. I have never been much of a gym person however I’ve come to really enjoy The Workhouse. I decided to try it out after my fiancé joined and have been surprised at how much I feel like my strength has changed in the past few weeks. The classes are different each week and fast paced so there is not any time wasted. Robbie, Bianca, and Emily are all very hands on and work with each person individually to set realistic goals and ensure the programming is working for us. All of the members are also very friendly and even though I came in knowing nothing about fitness, I’ve been very comfortable around everyone. I’d highly recommend The Workhouse to anyone.

The Workhouse is a unique experience. Will you curse Bianca every time she corrects your form on the ski ERG? Yes. Will you consider acts of violence every time Robbie asks you to push out one more rep? Absolutely.
But will you also feel like you’ve conquered Mount Everest after each workout and walk out of there feeling like a champion? Hell yeah.
I’ve been weight lifting for almost 17 years and have been a part of many different gyms during that time, so when I say The Workhouse specifically has reignited my passion for fitness and has done an incredible job with their programs, I mean it.
It’s obvious that each part of this venture has been well thought out. From the design of the facility to the actual programming they apply to work outs. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of and I’m very excited to see where they go.

LOVE this gym and the people. Its an incredibly thoughtful program and I've had far less repetitive stress injury while still building muscle. Because people aren't posting for time publicly, there's less competitive hierarchy than other gyms I've attended. Really enjoy the quality of workouts and gains so far.

The workhouse is an entirely new spin on group classes. I am 27 and have been lifting/training since I was 13. Most of the group classes I have taken have been an hour of high intensity movements with no destination in mind. Robbie and his staff make a point to focus on strength training while incorporating an appropriate amount of cardio so you don’t feel like a slug. The class sizes are strategically capped at 16 so that each person has access to all equipment and you’re not fighting over weights. Not to mention the space is large and resembles more of an athletic training facility than your typical gym. The culture they have created is inviting, fun, and friendly. But there is certainly a healthy amount of motivation and competition to keep you straying from your goals. I would 100% recommend this gym to anyone from my 60 year old mom to a college athlete.
