Hidden Fees, Poor Conditions, and Zero Accountability

I joined this gym thinking it would be a convenient place to work out, but after dealing with constant issues and outrageous fees, I regret ever signing up.

Facility Problems:
The temperature inside is unbearable most days way too hot in the summer and freezing in the winter. It’s clear the HVAC system isn’t maintained, and management doesn’t seem to care.

Cleanliness & Maintenance:
The men’s restroom is consistently dirty, and the overall upkeep of the facility is poor. Equipment is often worn down or left unrepaired for weeks.

Fees & Cancellations:
What really pushes this place over the edge are the hidden fees and the ridiculous cancellation process. You’ll get charged for things you didn’t even know existed, and trying to cancel your membership feels like jumping through hoops. It’s all about squeezing every last dollar out of members rather than providing a decent experience.

Bottom Line
Save yourself the frustration. There are better gyms in the area that actually care about their members and don’t nickel and dime you at every turn

This gym is in a great location and has tons of great character. unfortunately it is VERY mis-managed. The bathrooms were out of toilet paper 75% and had hand soap even less than that. Disgusting. They are raising prices while failing to take any steps to improve the locker room/bathroom. I will be terminating my membership if i see no improvement in 2025.

This place was dirty, will charge fees for "improving the gym", which they spent exactly 0 dollars of that amount to improve the gym, and they are nearly impossible to get a hold of. I would seek out literally any other gym before using this one. Again, I cannot stress how displeased I was with this gym and how dirty everything was. In my several months going here I don't think they cleaned even once.

Oh, and there was exactly one toilet and urinal- the urinal was broken the whole time I went here. Even with the improvement fees, they didn't fix the toilet.

The only nice thing I can say is that the machines all worked. But they didn't even have matching kettlebells. Had to use 42s and 45s at the same time.

I will start off by saying that I have been going to this location since it was Titans. The gym prior to becoming Onyx was always good enough, and clean enough to be happy going to this location.

Now that it has become Onyx I really don’t know where to begin. They used to have rags and disinfectant cleaner which was good to clean the equipment, now they basically have wipes with nothing to dry the machines off once the wipes are used so your left with a wet bench. The place is always a heat box and when I questioned if the A/C was on the manager replied it will come on when needed (It hasn’t been on all summer.) Even on a nice cool day they leave the doors closed and you’re stuck sweating profusely.

The machines and cleanliness of this establishment are also an embarrassment. Even with these conditions the manager will just walk around and act like nothing needs addressed. The owners don’t care, the managers don’t care, and the employee's don’t care about keeping this place nice. I won’t even discuss or bring up how disgusting the bathrooms are.

I live in Twinsburg and love my city but what is going on with every single restaurant, gym, fast food, etc., located in our area all being subpar at best?? Where are the standards??

I purchased memberships 3 years ago for my 17 year olds as a Xmas gift. I didn't think they would stick with it. They have become dedicated to their health and spend hours almost everyday there. Very safe place for them even in the evening hours. Numerous classmates and friends use the gym as well. I have read other reviews about cleanliness and bathroom conditions. My kids may not use the bathroom there as they probably would have mentioned it to me.

I’m honestly not even sure where to start with this ONYX location. I originally joined in December 2024, after switching from Planet Fitness because I wanted something more serious. At first, I was excited, it seemed like it had potential. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long.

The equipment is okay, but it’s easily the dirtiest gym I’ve ever been to. The machines are almost never wiped down, weights are left everywhere, and the showers are cold and unclean. Worst of all, the personal training is a scam—not worth the money, and honestly, borderline predatory.

When I first signed up, I was pressured into buying a 4-pack of personal training sessions with Paul. I felt cornered and said yes just to get it over with. Those sessions quickly became uncomfortable. He started making inappropriate comments about my body—saying things like how I “look good in those shorts.” That is not how a trainer should be acting, especially toward women.

The worst part? I was confused, brainwashed almost. Part of me felt comfortable because he was acting friendly, but deep down I was uncomfortable and mentally drained. I couldn’t focus on my lifts or goals. Later I found out he isn’t even certified to be training clients. He just shows off how much he can lift and tries to impress everyone.

Beyond that, the gym is disorganized and unprofessional. No one re-racks weights, no one cleans equipment, and management is a mess. I waited over a month for my personal training plan and meal plan—which ended up being a complete joke. I understand people are busy, but a whole month is unacceptable.

In contrast, I visited the ONYX in Willoughby Hills and it was a completely different experience. clean turf, gold dumbbells, pool, welcoming staff. Clearly the Twinsburg location is failing to meet the standard.

I’ve been seeing more negative reviews lately, which gave me the courage to speak up. What’s happening here is not okay. It’s harmful to members and to the genuinely good trainers who work there. This location is hurting the ONYX brand, and that’s really disappointing.

I truly hope corporate steps in and holds this location accountable. As it stands now, it’s not a safe or healthy gym environment—especially for women. Save your money and go elsewhere.

I started going to this gym six months ago, and I can confidently say do not waste your money. Honestly, I wouldn’t even bother stopping in for a free tour. While the equipment is decent at most and the regulars are friendly, the management is unprofessional, and the personal training program is a complete scam.

Their so-called “personal training” is misleading at best. The general manager, who aggressively pushes training on members, is not even certified to legally train anyone. He bloats about how much he can lift to persuade you to train with him, yet lacks a lot of education. Saying no doesn’t seem to be an option here, they pressure you until you give in. I personally felt cornered into signing up, and I later learned that I wasn’t the only one who had this experience.

To make matters worse, they are extremely disorganized. I waited over a month just to receive my training plan, and when I wanted to cancel, I found out they had left out critical details about the contract just to lock me in. Despite explaining my financial situation upfront, they failed to mention a month-to-month option, which could have saved me from an unnecessary financial burden. My trainer ended up quitting, and instead of working with me, they insisted I still had to pay for six months of training I wouldn’t even receive.

On top of everything else that came into play when I tried to cancel, what made me the most upset was how they handled my move. I made it clear I was relocating and was told that if I provided proof of my lease, I wouldn’t be charged the remaining balance. I sent over the necessary documentation right away, but after months of being ignored, I was still charged hundreds of dollars for training I never received. Their customer service is unresponsive and their policies seem built to take advantage of people.

Beyond the shady business practices, the environment itself is uncomfortable, especially for women. The general manager frequently makes inappropriate comments about female clients, from remarks on their outfits to asking invasive questions about their personal relationships. It’s unprofessional and unsettling. One example in particular that disgusted me was when the general manager asked me how many times a week my boyfriend and I have sex to try and persuade me to believe my boyfriend was not that into me. Please keep in mind my boyfriend and I just turned 20 years old, still lived with our parents at the time, and are Christians. This is just one of many examples of inappropriate comments we’ve received from him. Other women who were his clients at one point also experienced the same disturbing questions and behavior from him.

Hygiene is another major issue. This is by far the filthiest gym I’ve ever stepped foot in. I rarely get sick, yet every time I returned after a break, I ended up catching a stomach virus. And I wasn’t the only one dealing with this problem.

At the end of the day, nothing about this gym is worth it. There are far better options within a short drive, and I’d highly recommend looking elsewhere. Save yourself the time, money, and stress. This place is a disaster.

This has been the worst gym I’ve ever been to by far. Been to planet fitness, rec centers, weightlifting gyms and more and have never received this type of blatant robbery and unhelpful attitudes. I’ve had a membership since the beginning of June and paid for the 3 months subscription. After getting a card it never worked in the door to scan. I used my brothers in the past and I know how to scan it so I emailed asking to make sure my card was good. After 11 unanswered emails and countless hours, I have gotten my charge reversed from onyx and I never intend to ever workout there and I have recommended people do not go as well. I have also been charged multiple times for months I did not workout and have asked to remove these and was u able. They also brag to you about how much they can bench and squat trying to convince you to join their private overpriced training. The gym bro at the counter reads you his stats then expects/forces you get his sessions. They are ridiculous and many people I know have left. Don’t sign up!

Disappointing Experience – Not Worth the Hassle

This gym feels like a complete cash grab. There's a $25 processing fee and a $25 annual fee—even if you’re only there for a couple of months. They require a full 30-day cancellation notice, which means you’re guaranteed to be billed for an extra month. And forget about convenience: no credit cards accepted, only direct bank account access via routing and account numbers. Oh, and no refunds—ever. The basic membership is practically unusable unless you're only free during off-peak hours, so most people will end up paying at least $50/month,($53.36 don't forget taxes).

As for the facility itself—where do I start?

The men’s locker room is in rough shape. About a quarter of the lockers can’t close properly, with broken hinges left unrepaired, and dust on top everywhere. The restroom is almost always wet, cluttered with toilet paper, and generally unhygienic. The atmosphere throughout the gym is uncomfortable—warm and humid on most days with poor airflow. Fans are either idle, barely spinning, with maybe a few here and there actually working. Definitely not the cool, refreshing environment you’d expect in a workout space.

The floors and mats are filthy. You’ll see dirt and grime buildup everywhere, and I've personally spotted bugs—twice. It’s clear that cleanliness and facility upkeep are not priorities here. The water fountain was once broken for over a month (there's only one water fountain btw).

To be fair, the workout equipment is decent (+0.5 star), and the trainers I’ve seen and spoken to are kind and encouraging (+0.5 star). But that’s about where the positives end. Equipment maintenance is poor—machines can sit broken for weeks without attention.

Bottom line: Save yourself the frustration. Your local rec center is probably cheaper, cleaner, and much more TRANSAPARENT with its policies.

If you're a student, make sure to cancel your membership 1 month ahead or you will be billed an extra month while you're away at school, btw you can't cancel at the front desk or by phone, it has to be an email that takes "3-5 business days" to process. It isn't worth it, you'll only be there for 3 months. Though you will be charged for 5 with 3 actual monthly payment for the summer, another with the annual maintenance and sign up fees, and finally again when you decide to cancel your membership towards the end of the month before you go back to school. That's $200 for 3 months or $66.67 a month ($71.15 a month actually, don't forget taxes)

I have been working out at ONYX for a few months and when I first came in, I had no idea what to expect. I sat down with Paul Curry and we discussed my goals and how we can get there. Trust is a huge thing for me, and Paul has earned that trust. We meet on a weekly basis for individualized training specific to what I'm trying to achieve. I had no idea where I was at strength wise. Paul not only adjusted my nutrition which I now know to be a bigger portion of the change than I initially thought but also critiqued my form with specific lifts and made proper changes. Currently I have progressed to a 500PR squat, 350PR bench, 460PRdeadlift! I would have never thought of these adjustments on my own. Personal Training to me is vital when it comes to my transformation process. thank you ONYX, but more importantly, thank you Paul!

I’ve been apart of this gym for about 10 years. I’ve seen it go from Powerhouse, Titans, Alpha Legends, and now Onyx. Although the frequent change in ownership has been frustrating, I can honestly say that I still love being apart of this gym. I have personal trained with Adam and Paul for the past 6 months and they have been phenomenal; you can tell they really care about this gym as they have been trying to rebuild its legacy. Paul sits with you and listens to your goals, he also treats you like family. I had an issue with billing and he handled it very swiftly. Adam is the best, he’s down to earth, listens, and pushes you to heights you didn’t think you could go. He also doesn’t let you whimp out. I have a toddler and there are times where we have to rearrange schedules because of it and he’s always understanding and accommodating. Not to mention we share a love for horror/thriller movies which make training sessions fun. If you’re thinking about joining, do it; you will meet some of the best and thoughtful staff there is.

I’ve been a member at this location for 2 years and while the gym has potential due to its convenient location on Ravenna Road, there are several ongoing issues that significantly impact the member experience.

Love this gym! They have a ton of equipment including plated weights and deadlift area. The cardio area has plenty of machines. Even at busy times it doesn't feel crowded because there are so many machines to pick from. I worked with both Paul and Adam as trainers, both are amazing coaches that will get you to your fitness goals!! Onyx health in Twinsburg has been a life savor for me. I started working out in November right after my wife passed away as a method to help with the stress. I like this location, they have a lot of nice equipment and most things work unlike the Northfield location. My one issue is the cleanliness of the men’s bathroom/ locker. It’s very disgusting. One would think that with all the viruses going around they would be better about this but they fall way short.

This is my response to the owners comment to my review, it’s not that I like to give bad reviews to local businesses it’s just that when people pay their hard earned money to support ones business I think it’s very important that the public know what they are getting themselves into before you all sale them on ur package. I’ve been going to Onyx gym for about two years now. I really appreciate the variety of equipment the gym has to offer and the multiple spaces there are to stretch. The gym environment is really nice! Everyone is pretty respectful and will help out if you need help moving a weight or equipment. My favorite thing has been signing up for the personal training sessions. Onyx Twinsburg is one of or the best gym I have gone to in my lifting career. The manager Paul is super knowledgeable and helpful. The other trainers Adam, and John will put you through an amazing workout allowing you to feel your true potential. Onyx gym is well organized and clean. Been coming here since 2009 when it was powerhouse and the layout is the best it has been. Good variety of equipment, all in pretty decent shape.

I came in town and went to get a day pass for my wife and me, and was told by management that it would be $40. He said there was a membership deal for $37 and my wife could come as my guest. He said I could freeze it whenever I wanted (which I planned on doing since I live out of town and visit every other month). He stressed that I’d actually save a few bucks by signing up for a membership.

That was on 12/27. On 1/2, I was charged another $26. I called and was told this is a maintenance charge that can’t be refunded. The fact that they have a semi annual maintenance charge coming up in 6 days was never mentioned while I was signing up. Annoying experience for something that should have been quite simple.

UPDATE: I canceled my membership and got an email informing me the contract states 30 days written notice, so I’ll be responsible for paying a second month. Completely fraudulent practice - telling people they can sign up for a membership rather than a day pass. Won’t be surprised when it goes through yet another ownership change in the next year.

Onyx twinsburg is always a disaster. The place is always filthy especially the locker rooms/restrooms. Staff never bothers to clean or maintain equipment. Staff is very misleading regarding memberships and fees. Onyx will charge you a random 2 time a year “maintenance fee” when nothing ever seems to be fixed and treadmills are always broken. I would not recommend coming to this gym, there are plenty better options available.

I am happy with Conner as my Trainer; he has been excellent. Working with him, I started seeing gains in the first week. He is always flexible with timings, they have many machines, and the Gym is always clean.
The only two problems I have with the Gym are its PT contract, which seems like a predatory practice, and the amount of employee churn, which doesn't seem healthy; they have changed my PT four times in less than 10 months.

Right after my review, Conner was no longer the trainer and I never heard back for PT. So taking stars of the review. 2 stars because the facility is still decent, but seems like a bad management.

I would NOT recommend this establishment. Far too expensive for the rough quality of this gym. There are so many fees for quite silly stuff, and it only makes this place feel like a money grab. There is dust everywhere, the mirrors are warped, the bathrooms are filthy, there is NEVER soap in them (everyone has dirty hands in there at all times), AND the equipment is rarely maintained/repaired. As an member who works out daily to relieve stressors, Onyx in Twinsburg is my go to spot. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. They are helpful and supportive of your workout goals and growth. Being open 24/7 provides ke with the comfort of not worrying about the daily changes in my schedule. The facility has a variety of machines, weights and other options to offer every level of workout and training anyone may need. The staff go above and beyond to keep the gym clean especially with all the various people and activities that occur around the clock. Mason is one of the staff members that has been there consistently working to make the gym clean and welcoming each day I go in to workout. He returns weights and puts items in their places so when we go to get them they are where they should be each day. The addition of Miguel as a trainer at Onyx was the best decision that Management has made. Miguel is not only knowledgeable, but he also takes a personal interest in each client and makes working out not only beneficial but fun too. His classes are well planned and he observes each person to make sure each exercise is done correctly. He and Lexi (his assistant) also offer personal training tailored to individual needs. It’s worth an hour of your time to try the Monday or Wednesday class or a half hour training session.

I come to onyx in the summer. And to be honest, I didn’t like it in any way, except the 24/7 aspect. Besides that, this place was a mess. But then Mason came, at first. All by himself, he picked the pieces up. Making sure the gym was clean, the equipment and facilities were stocked, cleaned, and useable. If a machine was broken he notified me and everyone else about it to make sure no one did any thing to further the damage. Then he got staff, who are available to give you personal workouts, are very helpful, and will always give you a hello! I love this place. I come here everyday and I will keep coming back!

I’ve been going to this gym for a number of years and always had a great time until the middle of last summer when the place seemed to lose its original feel and member's due to a series of poor managers. I went to school for a few months and was very happy to return to the new and improved ONYX. Under new management lead by Mason, the gym is back to the old home gym feel. The place is organized, clean, respected by members and can’t be beat for the price. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to achieve their fitness goals.

Although the staff is friendly, the turnover has been significant within the 9 months I have been going. The majority of the treadmills are malfunctioning and it is true that it is typically stuffy/musty. After seeing the price increase for their renewal offers, I don't find it valuable to pay such a high price for a crowded gym in which you spend a lot of the time hoping someone isn't already using the equipment you want to. A lot of the attachments are wearing and tearing and the balls and handheld equipment are never cleaned so it transfers onto my clothes. I think it is worth 160 a year, but 30 dollars a month being a discount and 60 a month regular price seems out of line with the experience you are getting.

I read many of the reviews posted on Google Reviews and understand some of the negative reviews; however, please keep in mind that the new Manager (Mason) is beyond wonderful and working very hard to improve the facility and listens to the needs of the members.

I've been a member at the Twinsburg location for many years and have seen the down side (not clean, rusted/broken equipment, issues with the restrooms, staffing issues, change in ownership, etc.), but please take note that Mason has accomplished many improvements in little time that he's been at the Twinsburg location. The entire gym is very clean now, including the restrooms and fully stocked (toilet paper, soap, etc.). The unrepairable equipment has been permanently removed and some equipment has been replaced. Maintenance of the equipment that does need repaired is on the list to be repaired or has been. Note to all members: Please kindly let the Onyx Twinsburg staff know when there is an issue with the equipment because they may not be aware. Improvements take time and money, please be patient as enhancements are made .

Lastly, for all current members or guests, please respect all areas of the facility and contribute your part by putting weights back in the proper location, clean the equipment after each use, and if you see someone disrespecting the gym, make sure you contact the Onyx staff. For the members who cause negative issues and vandalize the facility, stay out of here!

Regrettably, my experience at Onyx Health Club Twinsburg has been gravely disappointing, warranting no more than a one-star rating. The consistent state of the bathrooms has been appalling, with unsanitary conditions such as urine on the floors and overflowing urinals persistently present. It is disheartening to note that the last staff member responsible for bathroom maintenance displays a concerning lack of diligence in ensuring proper cleanliness. I am deeply concerned for the health and safety of patrons due to the unacceptable hygiene standards. Equally distressing is the presence of a registered sex offender within the gym premises, causing significant discomfort and unease among myself and fellow members. Despite numerous complaints, the staff has displayed an alarming lack of responsiveness in addressing this unsettling matter. As a responsible consumer, I feel compelled to take the necessary steps, including reporting potential health code violations to OSHA, to ensure that these critical issues are addressed promptly and comprehensively for the welfare of all gym-goers.

Signed up for personal training years ago during the grand opening after being PROMISED that child care would start “very soon” and that they were in the process of interviewing and hiring. I told them repeatedly that the only way I could attend said training is if they had child care. “I completely understand” and “That won’t be an issue… but you have to sign up TODAY to get the discounted rate” That being said, they never opened the child care. As a result I was unable to use the training that i had reluctantly been paying several months for while waiting for this promised amenity. Very unprofessional tactic of lying to customers about amenities that were never an option and not allowing cancellation of contract when they didn’t hold up their end of the bargain.

** Update - the VP left a message for me on July 3rd regarding my review “to try to find a solution.” I returned the call within 20 minutes, but was sent to voicemail. I left a message asking her to call me back regarding the message she left. Still no call back 20+ days later. I’ve called the number and extension she left several times - sent to voicemail every time. Once again, more lies and unprofessionalism from this company. Save your sanity and just don’t do business with this company. They couldn’t care less about their customers or their promises once they have you locked in.

I would sit on a piece of equipment then try to adjust it or use it and it either does not work or hurts me. I’m 53 years old and more and more good customer service is hard to find. Onyx Twinsburg “gets it”! I was introduced to Onyx as I attempted to sign my daughter up for a membership. Long story short, I accidentally chose the wrong membership and dues. I was blown away at first Allen and then Chuck, the new Mgr, took care of me. They were extremely customer focused, efficient and made sure I was taken care of. Thank you very much for caring about the job you do. Great equipment.. but that’s all I can really say. I had to take away stars for letting the only trainer I felt comfortable with go AND there’s garbage scattered almost every time I go. This place is filthy almost all the time. The dust bunny’s are the size of a small dog and no one ever throws their trash away, just on the floor. Even the equipment has dust buildup on it. Been going to onyx gym for about a year. Started at Northfield and now at Twinsburg. I love it. The staff, people, equipment is all awesome. My only issue is the inconsistency with Northfield’s reopening. They keep changing the date with no notification to its members. I was surprised to find out it has a new management, and more surprised to find that my credit card is charged when it's not supposed to. When my daughter became unable to go to the Gym, I called in August and explained our situation, they offered to close the account without penalty, i was very grateful that they did that for us. However, today when I called the Gym, the lady said that they'll continue to charge us because they have no notes and didn't know or care what the deal is with the previous management. I am very upse. I understand that change of management happens, i would be ok if the new manager listens to the situation and offers some acknowledgements, and an acceptable middle-ground solution , instead of " no , no notes, we only have contracts" and she keep repeating that multiple times and it was very insulting. i would be willing to work on some compromised solution if she was willing to help. but now i can only work with my credit card company to stop her from charging my credit card. This gym is world's better than its predecessors at the location (Titans and Alpha Legends most recently) because the management and staff seem to really care. Specifically talking to Alyssa (regional manager who won't always be around) made me believe they are really trying to boost the gym from where it was. They are constantly talking to members and never too busy. They are willing to hear of issues and willng to address it. Scott is my trainer, and I got into it because I needed some direction. I know how to workout but I haven't been consistent with some stuff going on. Scott has made me burn and fatigue like I haven't in a long time. All while keeping my workouts efficient and within a manageable time in my busy and hectic schedule. If you gave it a shot before with old management and are concerned about signing up,I would suggest giving it a shot. These guys are great!

I love Onyx gym. They were really flexible with memberships you can freeze at anytime so you wont be charged during school. They also have great weights and plenty of space so you dont feel crampt.
