Disgusting! This gym is gross. It doesn’t even deserve a single star review. There is no regular cleaning or maintenance. The men’s locker room is stifling. It has to be 80 degrees in there. Workout equipment is frequently broken. Nobody patrols the workout area. People frequently “claim” one machine with a backpack or water bottle while working out on another piece of equipment. Groups of young kids often gather around a machine and spend more time on their phones than they do working out.

Several weight machines broken again as of this writing. Six months ago the machines were fixed, time to get on it again please! This is causing long waits to use the few machines that do work.

Whenever using the studio we always get shoved out over a half hour before the next class starts. This location also has asked us to not practice things on the green in front of the mirrors while the studio is busy. Highly recommend any other 24 over this one.

Sculptor Capital Investments LLC, Monarch Alternative Capital LP, and Cyrus Capital Partners LP. That’s who owns 24 Hour Fitness—and it shows.
I’ve been a member of the Hollywood, Portland club for over 20 years, and I’ve never seen it in worse shape. It’s dirty, neglected, and just plain gross. Hairballs roll around the Group X room like tumbleweeds. At least half of the cycling bikes are broken—you have to show up an hour early to grab one that works. And for God’s sake, nobody seems capable of changing the manual clock when daylight saving time ends. How hard is that? I’m about ready to bring in a stepladder and do it myself. Small things like that scream neglect.
The club was even closed for several days this summer to install new AC units, yet it’s still hot, stuffy, and stinky. Early-morning weekday classes that once made this place a true community are disappearing one by one. Not everyone wants to squeeze into a packed Saturday BodyPump class where you can’t even do a backward lunge without stepping on someone. Meanwhile, the parking lot gets sketchier by the day. (The only reason I stay is for Steph's Les Mills classes!! But like another recent reviewer, the second another gym with great classes opens up, I'm out.)
If you think this is an isolated complaint, keep scrolling. You’ll see the same feedback again and again—and right underneath it, the same AI-generated “thank you for your feedback” response from “management” (a.k.a. ChatBot).
Part of me wonders whether they’re just trying to ride out the lease—cutting corners, deferring maintenance, and waiting until it’s someone else’s problem. True, or not? I'd love to hear from a real person about what kind of "strategy" the company is pursuing. It might just be this one club, but Hollywood's 24 Hour Fitness reflects pretty poorly on the entire brand, and it's becoming a case study in what happens when private-equity owners forget the people who kept them in business.

I’m not sure how many one and two star reviews Hollywood needs to get regarding cleanliness and quality before they stop posting meaningless responses and actually do something about it. How hard is it to sweep the floor? To clean the locker room? To clean a bathroom? Hell—I work at a salon and we clean the bathroom EVERY SINGLE DAY. Because, OF COURSE WE DO. I have been at this gym since about 2011. It used to be great. It’s gone downhill so much the past 5 years. I can’t believe how completely disgusting they allow the floors, equipment, bathrooms and locker rooms to get. I don’t think the group exercise room floor has been swept and mopped in literal years. Don’t look in a corner or behind the weight racks—it’s all dust, hair, dirt and filth. It’s pretty infuriating that they just don’t care. Clearly. The only reason I keep my membership is because it’s 5 minutes from home and they have a few Les Mills classes I like. That’s it. They’ve lost most of their good instructors and classes. The whole energy of this place has died the past several years, and it’s really sad. But to allow a gym to be absolutely filthy most of the time is inexcusable. I doubt it will ever change. If a new gym opens near me with great classes, I’ll go there in a heartbeat.

*updated again 10/27*
Going to keep all of my reviews here for time stamps. Over a month since updating about the poor sanitary conditions of the locker room and sauna and its still just as bad and today and gentleman slipped in the hot tub and cracked his head open and when i went to use the emergency phone to call the front desk for help it wasn't working. If I could give a negative star at this point I would
Been coming here since the beginning of this year and love the staff and location but sanitation has been very lax almost the whole time I've been coming to this one. The men's locker room has pretty much always been dirty and I just learned they have 1 male maintenence person that only comes on the weekends so the amount of hair and garbage that piles up is pretty disgusting but also the sauna and steam room go 3+ days without a clean. Other than that this location would have 5 stars. Update, they commented on this and said they would make it better but 2 days later there were a bunch of the toilet seat covers ontop of the toilet paper that had been there for 2 days already

David Newman is awesome. I've had many trainers over the years, and many of them are distracted or complain about this or that. David showed knowledge, focus and enthusiasm for his work that made all the difference in time we spent on my training. 24 Hour Fitness is lucky to have him on their team.

24 Hour Fitness Hollywood is my "Happy Place". I attend this gym 7 days per week and work out on the Treadmill for 1 hour to start each and every day!! I take yoga, body pump and pilates classes for a total of at least 6 classes per week. I love the classes and the instructors. The BEST EXPERIENCE is the Team!!! Tommy, GM, and all the Sales and Support Team - they are the BEST!!! Super friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and solve any problems quickly. Kudos to Marche, Dave, DeAndre, Patrick, Saige, Sophie, Jared, Andrew, and the Environmental and Technical Crew. The Group X Studio temperature is Heaven - perfect for Yoga and all the other classes. Thank you - this truly makes my day perfect!!!!

I’ve tried this gym again occasionally over the years, and it never stops being poorly maintained & FILTHY.
Some of the equipment is so badly in need of repair as to be unsafe or unusable.
The floor in the big room where classes are held is not swept between classes, so you get mud from everyone’s shoes, hair, you name it on yourself/your stuff.
In the sauna, despite the sign with tiny print, people wear their dirty shoes and don’t sit on towels – so someone leaves a puddle of their own sweat & dirt for you to sit in next. There is also a weird odor.
Even when I think I’ll just try it again because it’s cheap or convenient, this gym is never worth it. Management will comment on this post and pretend to care, and nothing will change.

I have gone back and forth on one or two stars. I gave two because of Steph. I am new to 24- I joined because I took Steph's RPM, Bodypump and bodycombat class. I love to be on the bike, and that is why I was looking for a gym to join, but Steph's energy, authenticity and clear passion for teaching drove me to try the other classes; I will take any class Steph is teaching, I walked away from her class feeling reenergized and seen. That's why I have to believe that Steph was being a good peer because when I asked her about Amber's cycle class, she spoke positively of her and said cycle is a great compliment to RPM. That might be true with another instructor, but Amber made it a horrible experience, Making it worse is when I asked another member if it was always like this, they said yes, that they have learned to ignore her and most wear ear plugs and do "their own thing" The member continued to warn me not to pick up my cell phone-that there would be "hell to pay" I asked why they come, the member responded that there are only two cycle classes in the evening, this is one of them. Amber literally yelled at us the whole time telling us we were doing it wrong- that we had to do what she was doing, or we were "disrespecting her" and the time she puts into planning "her class" and that if we don't like the way she drives us, we can leave and not return. One of the members made a comment "she is angrier then normal today" When I said that I was going to share my concerns, I was told not to bother, that several have shared their concerns and nothing has changed. I decided to share my concerns anyway with a very nice person at the front desk, and before I could even say the name of the instructor, they said, "oh, you must be talking about Amber, we hear that about her all the time" I don't even know what to say to that. If I had taken Ambers class before I took Stephs class, I would not have signed up to become a member.

He is also an amazing body worker and is great at finishing a workout with relaxing and decompressing adjustments, which are informed by his established massage therapist background.

I have belonged to the this gym prior to 24 Hour Fitness. The lack of cleanliness, maintenance and expectations is disappointing…. Also, I went to another location and was told my membership wasn’t good there…. WTH, I paid for 3 years in advance and pay an annual membership fee. How can you change the membership while the contract is in affect?? This isn’t what I was sold. People working out bare foot, shirtless and vaping on the weight floor. I will be looking for a new place to work out.

This gym has definitely gone downhill since its opening, but it’s not horrible. I say I get what I pay for. However, they do need to repair machines more quickly. The leg press machine has been broken for a month or more now and it’s the only one. It’s also an important machine for most lifters. That’s been frustrating that there’s no urgency to fix machines. There’s always at least a few machines out of order. :( I’m hoping with the new planet fitness opening down the street 24 hr will step it up to keep their members.

Edit: 6 months later and nothing has changed. There are numerous machines broken. Several (including the cable stations) have been broken for nearly 6 months. No one here cares. I’ve been to other 24 hour fitness locations when time allows in the area (Gladstone, Beaverton, Sellwood, Lake O) during that time and there are ZERO broken machines.
I want my money back. This is ridiculous.
I joined 24 hour fitness because they have several gyms around the area which suits my needs. This one is the bottom of the barrel but also happens to be my home gym. It’s not terrible, but machines and cable stations are frequently broken, often for weeks at a time. Most of the TVs in the weight training area don’t work (not a huge loss but…why?). They have a team of two guys working hard trying to fix stuff but they clearly need either more help or access to more repair equipment. Other locations in the area have better machines (for instance Prime machines in Gladstone, or mag-grip attachments in Beaverton), more machines, as well as better barbells. This location desperately needs to replace two of their free-motion cable stations which are rickety and warped beyond repair, and could use another full cable station and squat rack. Oddly, there is a huge amount of real estate inside where they used to have a kids drop off and private training that has laid entirely fallow for more than 2 years. Wish they would use that space for more equipment.
Cleanliness is hit and miss but that’s more on the clientele not cleaning up. They do have staff cleaning several times per day.

Mostly what other people have said is true. This place is extremely dirty and looks and feels like it hasn't been cleaned in years. Broken equipment along with just a disgusting basketball court. I would avoid this one at all costs. 24 hour fitness seems to be in a death spiral as a business and it shows.
Since this year things have been falling off a cliff for the business. I'm guessing they fell way under projections for new sign ups. It looks like they have cut costs in cleaning and maintenance. If this place was free to go to I would still advise you go someplace else.
Edit: For whomever from corporate or the actual gym that responds to these clean! You will continue to hemorrhage sign ups if when people walk in they see just dirt and grime everywhere. 70% of the gyms in the area have either broken basketball hoops and lights and the floors haven't been cleaned properly since I'm guessing covid.
You will 100% turn into one of those gyms where people will say you get what you pay for. Then I'm guessing in about 5 years I will see articles about what was the downfall of 24 hour fitness. You will go the way of blockbuster video and so many other companies that tried to save a few dollars. Hire an outside cleaning staff!!!

I thought I was overreacting with the conditions at this location. Coming to the reviews have validated everything for me. The place stinks like throw up and sweat. No one puts weights away. There will be a completely empty dumbbell rack with the dumbbells on the ground. There is not a single team member walking around to clean up. It is very dirty. I go in the morning with the hopes that cleaning was done overnight only to be disappointed time after time. Since I started my membership here the wet area has been closed. Based on what I hear idk if I even want to go in there. The wet area was why I chose 24 over Planet Fitness. I’m lucky enough to be close to other locations. This is by far the worst! I’d go to Planet Fitness if I were able to get out of my contract at this point.

Lift at your own risk bring antiseptic and sandals.. Don’t bother going to other locations just as bad..
Hey 24hr why should i reach out to you simply visit any of your locations is all you need to do they all need a thorough cleaning just ti start and not once but weekly and i have tried to reach out with ZERO response either through your managers, phone calls to corporate and email not one response.. look at the picture for instance the elevator has been out for how long??? You tell me look at the poor guy pictured took him 20 minutes to try and walk up the stairs. How long will the clogged foul smelling sink in the mens room not work, how long before the fountain filters are changed so water actually comes out, how about cleaning the black mold off the fountains at your Pearl location? I decided to do a guest pass due to my regular gym being closed for the holiday. Safe to say, I will not be joining under the current conditions. The staff seemed bothered by my asking for assistance, and didn't bother to give any sort of tour or helpful advice for their space. I had to wander around to find what I was looking for. The place is incredibly packed, and I felt like I was in a swarm of ants at a picnic. I couldn't put my arms out without hitting someone, and finding a spot to just work out was a task. With that being said, I didn't see a single person bother to disinfect equipment the entire time I was there. The stations are poorly placed, and there seems to be little concern to pick up after ones self or leave the space better than it was. I also found this to be true on the cardio equipment, where its clear that the staff dont bother to do regular cleaning or machine maintenance. There were thick layers of dust on all the equipment, and when I went to use the elliptical the black grip disintegrated all over my hands and made for a poor workout experience. Overall, the worst experience I have ever had at a gym. Save your money, it's not worth the cost for the gym that the franchise forgot.

As a transgender and physically disabled member, I chose this specific location of 24 Hour Fitness (Hollywood District, Portland OR) because of the unisex bathrooms on the main floor and the pool, which I rely on for physical therapy.
Unfortunately, the elevator has never been operational in the months I’ve been a member, making it impossible for me to access the unisex bathrooms on upper floors. The main-floor unisex bathroom in the pool area is also out of order and has been for multiple visits. Despite asking for updates, I’ve received no timeline—just generic apologies.
This is not a minor inconvenience. This is a serious accessibility failure. It blocks me from doing necessary physical therapy and raises ADA compliance concerns.
Until accessibility is restored and communication improves, I cannot recommend this gym to other disabled or transgender individuals.

(Note: This review is specifically about an instructor). Amber is by far the best fitness instructor I have had the pleasure of experiencing in a long time! I’ve taken cycling and Pilates with her, and it is so clear she puts a lot of thought and intention into how builds a class from its foundation, whether through the warm ups or the necessary muscle activations for maximum efficiency in training. Plus she somehow perfectly curates her playlists to align with the build and flow of her class. Her obvious enthusiasm and passion for what she does radiates, and I’ve left her classes feeling not just like I had a good workout with an excellent instructor, but also received a boost of joy for the rest of my day. Please add more classes with her, she is the best!

This place is gross.
I have asked the staff multiple times why nothing is ever cleaned. The Mens bathroom is a biohazard, as well as the pool area. I will find clumps of hair and bandaids stuck to the floor for days at a time, if not longer. There is a colony of fruit flies in the pool shower all year around. These areas should be cleaned every few hours, not every few weeks, if it’s even happening at all.
It’s clear that there’s zero cleaning staff.
The staff says their hands are tied and that corporate needs to step in. Maybe don’t pay minimum wage and you can find a staff willing to service your clients.
There are signs everywhere stating not to leave your wallet, keys, or phone locked away in the locker room. Ok, I understand they can’t put a camera in there. I like to use the public lockers in the main area under the camera. It would be nice if they could fix the numerous damaged lockers. It’s been months, and it’s hardly excusable.
Beyond this, there’s so little communication from management. I was swimming this week when I was told to get out for cleaning. This cleaning schedule is posted nowhere. It was a really unpleasant interaction, and put both me and the staff in an uncomfortable situation.
It’s just kinda sad. I think they know their good location allows them to be completely complacent. Where are the managers? Or better yet, are there managers?
It’s clear that 24 has no pride in the space they offer, espically after all of the reviews just like this one.
Update 3/19/25
Months later and absolutely nothing has changed. Today at 12:30 I approached the GM Tommy Keplinger about the piles of toilet paper, trash, spider weds and dust piles in the bathroom. I was immediately met with an attitude and made to feel dumb for even asking. His response reaked of “ what do you want me to do, I’m just responsible for running the place”. It’s clear that they’ve just given up and don’t care anymore. To tell me that you can’t even sweep the bathroom once upon opening in the morning is a bit hard to comprehend. However, rest assured, he told me that bathroom would be “cleaned” at some point today. -6 stars

I feel like this gym should be opened 24 hours as the name would imply. I do understand maybe due to staffing or the area it’s in (which does get sketchy at night, I know because I live in the area) they might do it for safety reasons. It’s an alright gym, nothing special, pretty expensive for how mid it is and as the reviews say the equipment is constantly broken, and it’s a little gross looking at times. I feel like my biggest thing against this place is you’re paying premium price for a gym that’s suppose to have the luxury of being open 24 hours plus and have access to nice CLEAN amenities. Planet fitness probably the move tbh. 🤷♀️

I had high hopes that this gym would turn itself around (post pandemic). My last visit confirmed that it hasn't. Downgrading back to one star. Randy and Darren both summed up the current state of this 24-hour location. It is not properly maintained, nor do I trust leaving anything in the locker room.
______________________________
UPDATE 12/10/22 -
I am upgrading from one star to three after my last post 6 months ago. It would seem that many of the basic cleanliness issues have been addressed and machine's were in working order. The wood walls in sauna were replaced and the pool / jacuzzi look blue again. Gym and equipment could still use some upgrades, but I appreciate the effort to improve! (much like the entire City of Portland).
In so far as value, I will leave that to the individual to decide. Kudos to management, employee’s and cleaning staff for stepping up their game. Keep it going!

Summer 2022
It pains me to say, this gym has continued to spiral downward since my last review. I have been going to a newer location outside of Portland. I was pressed for time, so decided to go to Hollywood gym. I was shocked by how dirty the gym was. Machines were broken and it was obvious no one had vacuumed around machines for a loooong time (dust bunnies).
The men's room was disgusting (two clogged toilets, exposed plumbing). The pool was a dirty green color and visible green moss/mold on rim around it. Steam room had rust stains and deterioration on floor. Bathroom shower missing tiles. I talked to another member who agreed the gym was dirty and run down. He, like me, said it used to be his go to neighborhood gym, but now he goes elsewhere.
I understand Covid had a serous impact on the fitness industry and 24 Hour filed Chapter 11, closed locations, reduced staff. Some of the issues at this gym just require general maintenance. A few gallons of paint, vacuum, windex and disinfectant can go a long way That said, I really hope 24 Hour Corporate invests in renovation of this location. It is centrally located in Portland at a mass transit hub with the potential to be a great gym again. In it's current condition, it is unconscionable to charge the full membership. I encourage others to leave a review, email corporate and hope things improve. 24 can do better. I WANT THIS TO BE THE AWESOME GYM IT USED TO BE!
_________________________________________
I have been a member of this gym since it first opened as a "Sport" level club. Shortly after it became a "Super Sport" to include towel service and an increase in dues. I love the eclectic mix of people who use this facility, the employees and the location (except parking).
Unfortunately the gym has not been upgraded for some time. The equipment is old, worn and in some cases broken. The sun shades on the third floor (cardio) have been broken for years, thus the sun blinds you. The water fountains break and remain unfixed for weeks at a time. The locker room (men's) is very dated and feels "dirty".
For the amount of money this gym charges, it appears that it is not reinvested into improvements. I have gone to two competing gyms that offer $10 monthly memberships and was surprised by the quality of the equipment and cleanliness of the facilities.

2/26/25: Not open again.
2/12/25: I’m still being petty. Gym isn’t open this morning.
11/12/24: Gym is not open again this morning.
11/6/24: Gym not open
I think I’m coming back to my review each time I wake up at 4:30 to go to the gym only to find out no one bothered to showed up for their shift. Gym is not open yet again this morning. So frustrating that management does nothing about this common occurrence.
EDIT TO ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Guess what folks, got here at 7am (which is an hour after they’re supposed to open) and once again this place isn’t open. This time it’s not the building, it’s actually 24 hour fitness employees who haven’t shown up. Building security said they’ve been calling the manager for an hour with no answer. You can definitely rely on being disappointed on a regular basis going to this gym.
P.S the free weight area still smells like sewage.
Staying on your work out schedule at this location is difficult. I can’t count how many times I’ve showed up to work out and the building isn’t open for you to get in. Other reviews are accurate this location isn’t well maintained as far as cleanliness and the free weight area does smell like sewage.

This place used to be really nice to go to before COVID. But after COVID, they really let the place slide a lot, which makes sense. COVID messed up everything, but now in 2025, things are still not that good. And they have a serious sanitation problem in the pool area. The floor is super moldy, and the showers are moldy. As well, I've been going here for years and it used to be amazing. I don't think it's the staff exactly, but the management seemed to not really care. I was even there on 1 day when
Health regulation officer and even they didn't like how everything was. I really hope this place can do well in the future. Because I love the place. That's why i'm not giving it a two star.Because there's still the possibility

UPDATE 2/14/24 Arrived at 5:45am for my 6am cycling class, and the gym was locked up — once again, the person scheduled to open the gym didn’t show up. Another patron told me it was the second time this week this had happened. Is it too much to ask that you open the gym on time?
———————————————————————————————————————————————————————
On January 2, I arrived as a new member at 5:45am for my first indoor cycle class. The door to the gym was locked, though the posted opening time was 5am. A dozen members stood in the hallway along with the class instructor. The employee who was supposed to open the gym hadn't shown up. Members told me this happens several times a month -- evidently they have a tough time filling the morning desk shift. I waited about 15 minutes and then went home.
That was my first experience with 24 Hour Fitness.
My second experience came when I called the gym and asked to speak to the general manager. I left a message for "Tommy" (the guy who answered the phone wouldn't give me his last name.)
"Tommy" did not return my call. Mr. Keplinger, I'd still like to talk with you.
Since then I've shown up for two more cycling classes. The gym was open both times and the classes were good. It would be nice if the monitors on the bikes worked, but I very much liked the instructors.
Signs in the locker rooms advising us not to leave our keys or wallets in the lockers are concerning, and the showers don't look particularly clean.
The location's great, and there's plenty of room. But is it too much to ask that they open the club on time?

Literally the worst club. Always dirty. Often times (if you go early when they open) an employee will not show up on time. You end up waiting at the front door wondering if anyone is coming to open the gym. NOT worth the money.
*Update! Came to the gym first thing in the morning again only to find a line of 15 people waiting because as usual NO ONE SHOWED UP AGAIN. Also look at this photo of the bathroom.
*update! THREE MONTHS LATER NOT FIXED. I have come to the gym the last two days in a row to join 20+ people who are waiting in line enraged that no one showed up to open the gym. 24hr fitness, please refer me to a gym that is actually open their business hours.

I’m not usually one to leave reviews, especially since the responses all seem the same, but I feel compelled to share my experience in hopes of saving someone from signing up for this gym. Honestly, it’s terrible. My partner and I have memberships, and it’s been a huge disappointment.
The facility is filthy, the fees have been raised again (with no visible improvements), and the equipment is constantly broken. Just last week, four treadmills were out of order! To make matters worse, on January 2nd, they didn’t even open on time - I ended up leaving because I couldn’t wait around. We’ve been members for a few years and it’s the worst truly disgusting.
For what they charge, it’s not worth it. Avoid this place if you can.

Been going to this place for 10+ years and recently started going again and realized the facilities have changed considerably. After getting charged my annual fee I am curious what that money is going towards as the facilities are completely disgusting, especially the locker rooms and bathrooms upstairs. I do see a handful of folks at the front desk, and only one person cleaning, so I’m curious if there is a need for shifting staffing priorities.
Also, machines are constantly out of order, and it seems like it’s always the same ones, specifically the chest machine.
If cleaning improved significantly, I would feel more optimistic about continuing.

I have been with this gym since they opened this location. It used to be a place I enjoyed and now it's frankly disgusting. I don't have pictures right now but there are hair balls in the showers, dirty underwear and even a pad was left there in the shower for days. The floors and the areas around the equipment have not been cleaned for at least a few months at this point. The group room's mirrors and floors have been dirty for months.
There are not enough free weights, which have become increasingly popular. Why is management so stingy?
My fees just went up and I thought that perhaps it would mean that a change was on the horizon. Unfortunately, things have continued to be on the downhill slope. I would NOT tell anyone to join this gym at this point. We are paying guests and if I invited guests into my home and it looked and operated like this, I would be horrified and expect my "guests" to never return.
I almost NEVER complain or am motivated to write a bad review but this is beyond the pale. Honestly, if it wasn't so convenient and I didn't love my group workouts, I would leave this gym in a heartbeat. As it is, I am deeply considering it. Do NOT join this gym, folks. Find another one that actually cares about the experience of their paying guests.

With a central location and window filled space, this 24 Hour Fitness has the potential to be great. Having been a member since 2017 I take no pleasure in writing this review and I hope that improvements will be made.
The CEO of the company has spoken on how the brand is meant to be positioned as slightly more premium than the high value low price segment—this gym falls short on both. This location is in a state of disrepair for the following reasons:
1. Cleanliness:
The cleanliness across the facility is overall very poor and certain areas are particularly bad.
Parking structure: The concrete is covered in gum and trash is often littered around. The stairwells frequently smell like urine. Regular cleaning here is necessary in addition to pressure washing. More cameras should be installed throughout and in the stairwells.
Entrance/ Hallway: The hallway is not bad as it seems to be maintained by an outside contractor with proper cleaning supplies, as their are other tenants in the building. The floor mats at the reception need to be replaced as they are worn out and dirty. Consider adding an air purifier to the reception area to signal that cleanliness is a priority.
Men’s Locker Room: The men’s locker room is unhygienic due to lack of cleaning and in part due to poor etiquette from some members. The lockers are grimy and the insides do not seem to be ever wiped down. The locker room often smells unpleasant. The floors need to be steam cleaned. Many of the sinks are often out of order for long periods of time. The sinks are usually surrounded with grime and some people shave their hair in the sinks and leave a mess across the counter (I have seen blood from shaving which is a clear biohazard). I have seen people blaring music at the sink while shaving and making a mess. It’s clear that hourly cleaning is needed in addition to enforcing rules so that everyone can enjoy a clean club.
Solution: Members should be warned when exhibiting poor conduct and if it continues then should have their membership terminated. Signage should be placed near the sinks reminding people to keep the sinks clean to keep the space nice for others. Technology at the exit of the locker rooms should be implemented to allow members to take a quick survey on the locker rooms cleanliness and provide instant feedback. Think something like a HappyorNot terminal or any other service company that provides a similar software. Cleaning can be made more transparent by posting a cleaning log sheet that shows when the locker room was last cleaned. Team members should receive incentives and recognition for doing good work.
Wet area: The sauna is unhygienic and needs daily cleaning. Staff need to enforce rules about not wearing gym clothes/ shoes in the sauna to make it clear it is not acceptable.
Strength floor: The strength floor often smells bad. Cleaning is surface level if done at all. Dirt and dust is caked onto most of the machines. I have never seen machines or dumbbells being sanitized by staff. Many members fail to wipe down equipment before and after use. Cleaning staff should be paid at least $24/hr and more are needed. More signage should be put up to encourage members to wipe before and after use. Air purifiers and more supplies are needed.
2. Maintenance: Most of the combination lockers are broken or permanently locked. The hand dryer is out of order. Many of the treadmills slip when running or don’t work properly. Availability of resistance bands is limited. Mats often smells bad. The Stairstepper arm machine display doesn’t function. The sun blinds are consistently broken on the cardio floor. The battle ropes are in an inaccessible location. Countless of the bikes have broken foot straps.
The sauna thermostat is broken.
3. Equipment: Equipment variety is good but needs updating. They need treadmills that go over 12mph. The turf needs cleaning. More 15/20 lb dumbbells are needed to match demand.
I will say that the staff are friendly.
I hope to see 24 Hour Fitness turn around or be acquired by a more strategic company.

I love this gym but the HVAC in the GroupX room has been broken since August. It was hot to an unhealthy level then and now it's freezing. When we ask the front desk or management we are either told that they aren't aware of any issues (it's been complained about 100s of times) or that the building owner doesn't want to spend the extra money on HVAC repair. Please address this issue. Thank you.

"other factors" like what? you raised the membership fee by $2 per month to provide a "better experience" and yet the gym is as shitty as ever

I made the mistake of buying the one year membership for this location. If you are thinking about a membership at the location do yourself a favor and keep looking.
Where to start, machines break and take months to be operational again . The studio has no heat, it was literally 55 degrees in the studio for a yoga class. When I asked the front desk about it, I was told that it wasn't 24 hour fitness. The showers are in need of steam cleaning and basic regular cleaning.
It's not much of a challenge for me to get to the gym, but in this case the state of this makes it extremely difficult to even think about going.

I normally goto a 24hr fitness at a different location, but this particular 24hr fitness is the dirtiest gym i have ever been in. When I entered the gym I overheard a couple complaining to the person working the front desk about the lack of cleanliness. When I entered the lockeroom I noticed bits of trash and even hair balls all over the floor. This was across the entire locker room, not just the corner with the trash can. There was toilet paper on the floor in ever single bathroom stall and visible grime on the surface of the tiolets. I noticed bits of trash and debris where also scattered in the hallways and workout spaces. It was so bad that a random woman even comment on it to me as we uncomfortably eyed the large hairball on the floor between us and said the treadmills all had visible grime on them to the point she felt gross using them. I hurried my workout and went home to use a clean restroom.

I have been to seven, 24 hour fitness gyms and this one is by far the dirtiest. There has been a leak on the third level from the ceiling that literally leaks on you as you are on the elliptical. I let the staff know and they clearly were not bothered… The amount of dust on and near equipment is pretty gross as well. I avoid touching anything other than equipment in the gym. The third level needs to be cleaned, or at least dusted. I would have signed up for the LA Fitness in the Lloyd district if I would have noticed the lack of cleanliness here. I use many of portland area locations and they’re all pretty dirty and the locker rooms are pretty gross. Today, there was a homeless man in the locker room ranting and raving, pushing everyone out, and leaving a trail of mud and …. Maybe shaving cream? It’s not the first time I’ve seen something similar. They have signs around, warning people not to leave valuables in their locked lockers because of break ins. No wonder when they don’t seem to care who uses the places. I let the desk know what was going on and they equally unaware of what was happening as they were what to do about it. I gave 2 stars because they have a pretty good view, and a treadmill that talks to my watch. But when my yearly membership is up, I’ll likely be going back to LA Fitness.

I wouldn't say this is the best 24 hour fitness but it's far from the worst. The equipment is generally in working order with only the occasional normal breakdown, I won't knock repair times as that's not in the hands of the location I assume. My only critique is a couple times, the sanitizers were empty but they might have had a call-out, it's not a regular thing. What I will say is it's miles better than the downtown location that has no parking, and a pretty horrible layout, only went once since it's closer to me and won't go there again.

This gym has gone drastically down hill over the last few years. It’s a really busy location and I’m quite certain 24 fitness corporation could reach into their deep pockets and pay for more repairs, and cleaning.
It makes sense that if you can afford boutique gyms that’s where everyone is heading.
I have included some photos of how trashed and filthy everything is. Equipment stays broken for 3-5 months without repairs and many items like box jumps are falling apart.
The one pro is that diversity of staff and clientele has gone up.

I am writing to express my disappointment with my experience at 24 Hour Fitness Halsey location . I recently went to this gym location with high hopes, but my expectations were quickly shattered.
The facilities were poorly maintained, with broken equipment and unsanitary locker rooms. The staff was also unhelpful and seemed more concerned with chatting among themselves than assisting members. I am extremely dissatisfied with my experience and would not recommend this gym to anyone.
Furthermore, the name "24 Hour Fitness" implies that the gym is open 24 hours a day. However, this gym closes at 10 pm, which is quite contradictory to its name.

This is my favorite place in the Portland area to do spinning classes. The staff are incredibly good, and the equipment is generally well maintained and top of class. At some point, I will try out their cardio equipment, weights, and pool area. I like that it's all spread out on three floors. [Update 10/26/2023] There are 2 different spinning classes, each with its own instructor, Steph and Tony, each with their own style. I try never to miss a class, that's how much I think about them. [Update 12/27/2023] I did my first evening spinning class. A very pumped up group! I hope I can make it back to that class more often. As always, what an awesome instructor! The best. The state of the Portland Hollywood club has been steadily declining - the past few months especially. Trash cans are often overflowing and there is a thick layer of dust/hair/dirt/sweat on the floors, mats, and machines. A toilet in the women's room has been out of order for close to three months. Most equipment is in need of replacement, or at the very least, proper maintenance. I typically have to try several bikes, ellipticals, etc. to find one that doesn't grind, clunk and has functioning controls. Many weight machines are also out of order, missing pins, and pretty sure hand weights are never cleaned. Not sure what the protocol is, but it shouldn't be up to the members to report equipment issues - seems like staff should be testing/inspecting for issues on a routine basis. The pool, whirlpool and sauna are beyond disgusting and I question if they would pass a visit from a health inspector. I have been told they have been without regular cleaning staff for over a month which to me is unacceptable - shouldn't at least a temp agency be called in to clean? I'm not expecting a fancy gym with state of the art equipment but I do expect functioning, well-maintained equipment and facilities that are cleaned on a regular basis.

I've never left a review for anywhere, but genuinely felt compelled to today.
Walked in to try out their facility and left after about 30 minutes. This gym is beyond filthy.
The main workout room floor was littered with trash, and had a thick layer of dirt throughout. A large portion the machines were out of order as well.
The pool was green and murky, and the sauna had an incredibly strong stench. I did a complete 180 when I opened the door.
The worst, and genuinely scariest part was the men's locker room. I have been to many gyms, and this was by far the worst. Every inch of the floor was slimy, the lockers were sticky and dusty, and the shower drains were covered in sludge and hair. This gym is not cleaned regularly, if at all. I don't think this gym is even fit to be open in its current state. I believe it is due for a health inspection.
Absolute wast of my time, and money. I am very glad I waited to sign up for a whole membership plan and did a trial day.
Angelina (I think) was incredibly nice at the front desk when checking me in, and she deserves all the best. I wanted to ask for a refund before I left, but I just had to leave.

They have workout equipment that is functional. Unfortunately it's not well maintained. Theres a pulldown that has a broken lock to it, and it will suddenly disconnect and slam down on people. I hear the sound of it disengaging every other time I'm over there. I took pictures, emailed it to corporate, got a response by the manager who told me in person that they weren't legally required to keep the interlocks installed, so they removed them... and that they would have maintenance resolve the issue. That was 4 months ago. Hasn't been resolved.
Basic stuff like sanitizer and wipes are often empty. Yeah you can go here to workout, but you're in among the unwashed masses so to speak. I've been to far nicer places.

It's time to make this place 24 hours again. The crowd control issues are out of control & this place should not be packed between 11AM-3PM.
Whether it's corporate or management calling the shots, one of them really needs to step up.

Facilities are disgusting - I found what appeared to be a used pad in one of the lockers on my last visit. There are clumps of hair clogging the drains in all the showers. The pool and hot tub seem to be out of order about a third of the time. Staff is rude and unhelpful. Contracts are misleading and predatory - they'll steal money from you while failing to fulfill their commitments.

Been a member since 2007—this gym is embarrassingly neglected. Sad 😢
Dirty & gross. Floors are filthy. Vibe is LOW.
Here’s what’s been lost:
- no more child care
- no more swimsuit spinner
- no more towel service
- no more lobby seating (nowhere to chill)
- no more lobby tv
- no more jump ropes
Thief’s cut locks on lockers weeks ago and stole keys and vehicles.
This place use to be great. What happened to 24hf? I bet there’s a Netflix docuseries coming out in 5 years explaining how corporate mismanagement of funds (greed) sunk this business.
I ain’t willing to show up to a filthy club. Getting to the gym is hard enough—y’all make it disgusting.

Edit: I did contact 24 hour fitness through the method in their reply and after weeks, they never responded or contacted me back. Its all just a front to show they care which they dont.
Go to any other gym or any other 24 hour fitness. I am disgusted by how we were treated. Hundreds of dollars stolen from our account and manager (Lorraine I believe) said go ahead and take us to small claims court after were were told by 2 other employees that the refund request had already been submitted and processed. They are lying and trying to steal from you.

I gave up my planet fitness for this membership and am starting to regret it. Every time I am here the locker room floors are covered in balls of lint, hair, debris, mud and random trash. It doesn’t feel like it meets basic levels of cleanliness. Forgot to mention that there are often no wipes or disinfectant.
I blame the company for not paying their workers enough and doing checks on their cleanliness levels.
Also they close way too early. How can they name themselves 24 hour fitness when they close at 8? Also if you’re closed, doesn’t that mean you’re cleaning? Doesn’t look like it
The machines work well and they have all that I need so that’s nice. Front staff is nice too

DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM. I was trying to resolve a payment issue and the general manger Lorraine was very rude and impatient, even throwing my phone back in my face and completely ignoring me when I said that I was sorry for the inconvenience .Do not go to this gym.

My son was turned away when he tried to come into this location. He was told that there is an outstanding balance on the account. Upon checking account online, it showed a zero dollar balance. I texted a screenshot of this to the representative I was speaking to and she was very rude and maintained that we had an outstanding balance despite the proof we provided. I was very sick and could hardly talk when I was speaking with her and she said “why don’t you come down here and show me your bank statements?”. This is an absolutely unacceptable way to interact with a client. She stated that she was the manager and the general manager, and would not allow the issue be escalated to a superior. Therefore, I reached out to the corporate office already to file a grievance and asked that her behavior with clients be investigated to avoid other people having this experience with her.

Gym itself is pretty good, and has decent equipment but definitely be weary leaving things in your locker. Someone had to have been watching me and cut my lock after leaving the locker room and stole my wallet, keys, and in turn my truck. Guy at the front desk thought it had to be a member so I’m hoping the police followed up.

Worst experience ever. I was being harassed by one of the regulars. I told the manager and they seemed apathetic to my experience. It is unfortunate because there aren’t that many gyms on the NE Portland side of town. I will be going to one of the more expensive gyms in hope to find a better environment. It is sad 24 hour fitness doesn’t take harassment seriously. I didn’t feel safe doing my workout or walking to me car.

Been going here for 8 years or so lately they tend to have a habit of closing sauna and steam room for “cleaning” they will close it in the morning from atleast 8-11 rendering the facility useless for people trying to work out earlier in the day. On top of that it is closed for 3 hours for a 20 minute job, this place really does not understand their customers and just does stuff randomly, poorly ran in that aspect but honestly shouldn’t have such high expectations

I wanted to take a minute to say how great the customer service I received from ASM David G. There was an issue that had me pause/cancel my membership.
He took the time to explain the issue that was caused by a different club. Was able to resolve the issue and activate my membership asap. For someone in sales, I do appreciate the time he tool to help me.
Also quick note. Angelina is also amazing, friendly and a joy to talk to.

I've been a member of this gym for just under 2 years. I chose this gym for its location because it's a 15-minute walk from my home. The gym is also right next to a bus stop and a light rail station, and it has a parking garage with free 2-hour parking. The staff are friendly and helpful, creating a welcoming and positive environment. Equipment is decent: lots of cardio equipment, 3 training power cages with space for deadlifting, 3 bench presses, most machines, a turf area, a large room for classes and when classes aren't happening, space to workout or stretch; 2 small cable setups along with a larger one.
The MOST NOTABLE NEGATIVE about this gym is the FILTH and LACK OF CLEANLINESS. Machines and equipment have layers of dust, debris, and grime. The floors are covered with dust bunnies and debris. The bathrooms are nasty. It's evident that the gym is not being cleaned regularly, if at all.
The gym is also NOT WELL TAKEN CARE OF. Pins for machines are missing, rendering workout equipment unusable. Machines often remain broken for weeks, if not months. Machines are also so worn that on some you cannot even see what weight you're pushing. The general atmosphere of the gym is that the folks who own and manage it, don't care about it. For most of my time here, there weren't enough 10-, 5-, and 2.5- pound plates to go around. And it stayed like that for nearly a year....which speaks to a larger theme at this gym: neglect.

I bought a year for 24 Hour because of the mall 205 location, but right after I purchased it they shut that location down. 24 Hour Fitness snagged about 400 dollars from me without offering a close location to exercise. The manager here did nothing to help me out, so I'm just waiting for it to expire so I can pay a better gym. What a huge bummer, do not support this business.

First, let me say that the staff at this location has been unfailingly courteous and helpful. They are definitely the bright spot of my gym going experience.
Unfortunately, were it not for the fact that this gym is the closest to my home, I would never go.
LACK OF EQUIPMENT: If you use barbells, you can expect to spend a good 5-10 extra minutes hunting for 2.5 and 5 lb plates, as those are in pathetically short supply. As a corollary to that shortage, you can expect your sets to be interrupted at least once by fellow plate hunters asking to use your smaller plates.
OVERCROWDING: For whatever reason, this gym has enormous attendance among young high schoolers, who often show up in pajamas and huddle in groups around precious equipment (see above) others are waiting for. I have nothing against high schoolers working out, but there are limits. This is especially problematic when such a group is occupying one of the only three squat racks that serve this location, where it's not uncommon to see 100+ members in attendance, even during off hours. If you want to use a rack, you can sometimes wait up to 15 minutes. I suspect the overcrowding is in part caused by the membership fee reductions, which in turn was likely triggered by the national chain's bankruptcy in recent years. Well, you're getting what you pay for, I suppose.
LACK OF AC IN THE SUMMER: I only noticed this recently, so it may be another cost cutting measure. But things get dire on the cardio deck, which occupies the top floor and suffers from the combined pressures of hot air flowing upwards and the late afternoon sun beaming in through the glass windows, which cover nearly the entire floor to ceiling area of the west-facing wall. There is a large, industrial fan, but it doesn't seem to do much. If there is AC, it is similarly ineffective.
I've been to other 24 locations in the Portland metro, and things aren't nearly this bad. I hope to see improvements.

I find the staff at Hollywood 24 hour fitness here in Portland to be super friendly and always willing to be helpful. I asked when I showed up at the front desk and the manager told me he did. He said he had to go get it from the storage locker. Said I could come grab it in a bit. Halfway through my workout I came to him and he said they didn't have it and was unwilling to check more than 10ft from his desk. I'm not normally in this area so I thought I would ask before I started working out if there was a dip belt as it's part of my program and would have driven the extra miles to the 24hour fitness I know have them. He ruined my workout.

Had a appointment with Angelica, she was not. Guy at desk took over was very rude
Told us we couldn't have our
Pass, then relented to one day pass which we didn't after all. Left us standing long time by customer service with our telling us he was done. He relented and told us we could
Go self exercise in pool, which he knew the pool was being used by lap swimming, so that was a bust, hot tub was down for maintenance. He said he didn't have to follow our confirmation, cause corporate was not in his data base, so he doesn't have to follow what dictated on line. ( Definitely in wrong position not customer focus are friendly at all and condescending

There's a common theme here, and it's that the general manager is one of the greatest downfalls of this gym.
I was on my final day of a guest pass and as I walked in the gym was mulling over my options for membership signup, there is a yearlong deal going on that is heavily promoted. As I was checking in there was some type of tech issue and none of the members arriving were able to check in either. When the front desk employee requested the assistance of their general manager, Laurie, there were immediately met with negative comments, condescending remarks, and quite frankly just straight belittlement. I was absolutely appalled at the way she spoke to her employees in general, but even worse in the presence of the clients. The tone and the manner in which she spoke to the members asking for assistance, as well as myself as a prospective member, was equally negative. The 5 minute interaction with Laurie eliminated any desire I have of returning to this gym or giving them my money.
Another review said it perfectly: "She's rude, disrespectful, unappreciative of her employees hard work, she's tries to make her employees look and feel incompetent. She really needs to go.👎🏾👎🏾" - A gym will improve in condition when it is properly run by someone who knows how to treat their hard working employees and their paying customers.

🚨🚨🚨"DO NOT GO HERE! They WILL STEAL your VALUABLES from the lockers and STEAL YOUR CAR in the process, even if you have the strongest lock. The manager doesn't care and won't take any action. She could lose her big ego and try to provide me with a solution, but instead, she ignores the issue while the thieves are still present among the members. This happens frequently, and they show no concern. It continues to happen! They will refuse to disclose the identity of the thief or show you the surveillance footage. They will ask you to file a police report, but they won't take responsibility. Recently, my backpack was stolen from the gym, and they didn't even show me the footage of the theft. I lost over $850 worth of belongings. They are not refunding me or doing anything about it, fortunately my car hasn't been stolen yet. When I spoke to the security guard, he informed me that this is a common occurrence, and once, five people had their bags and cars stolen simultaneously. I regret paying for a membership at a gym that lacks accountability for thefts. This gym is terrible! 🚨🚨🚨"

It's meh, but could be so much more. The front desk area is nice, clean, friendly. Employees are great. There is not enough room to stretch or do body weight exercises. Between machines, I'm just wandering around looking for a place to get a few push ups in, while an enormous bay of cardio machines sit unused. The facility needs a very, very deep clean, and is in desperate need of basic maintenance. Flickering light in the women's room, broken stalls, broken dispensers, broken machines... So many things are broken with signs all over. It's getting very run down. It's also very dusty and grimy. The pool is super murky, and there has been toilet paper in the spa. I'm dying to test the pool numbers, but would rather not know. There are no signs requiring showers prior to swimming. I get that it's a high volume place, but it's pretty gross. Will not renew if it doesn't improve.

There are things like that aren’t clean, but I feel like it’s nit picky things that dusty. Honestly though whenever I see one specific custodian there won’t be anything lingering on the floor too long anywhere. Locker Rooms, weights. Every floor normally won’t have anything like paper towels or gross when he’s working. He’s normally always wearing black. All black from top to toe. Thank you Mr. Custodian man

Beware of this place. I had my lock cut off my locker and car keys taken out of my locker and then they went and fleeced my car of everything in it. My car was parked DIRECTLY next to the security guard. When I called the manager to ask them to review the camera footage so they could identify the culprit and bar him from the gym so this doesn't happen to future people, they told me they wouldn't do that unless they had a request from a police officer to do so.... so even if you lock your stuff up- you can still be robbed here

Yes, The weight area does smell. There’s actually an issue with every part of that Gym. I would start by firing that dude with the headband. Laurie or whatever her name is a joke! management is very unprofessional, They can’t conduct a normal conversation. Don’t you ever put the burden on a member for something an associate hasn’t done correctly! The basketball courts are dirty, Hoops don’t sit straight , which they never addressed. The locker room is disgusting, mold, The bathrooms smell so foul, The locker room floor is filthy, Showers don’t have water pressure Or any privacy on some. And good luck finding a machine to use because you have selfish adults who aren’t thoughtful about anything.
