Chest, back, and abs with Ace should come with a warning label. He kicks my ass every single time — in the best possible way. The energy, the cues, the push… 10/10 would suffer again!

Janelle is great!! Clear demos and cues, super appreciated how she physically demonstrated each move multiple times. Literally every time I felt a little lost I could look over at her and she was pantomiming what I should be doing with my body. She’s got wonderful energy and I felt super welcome!

As someone who doesn’t normally work out, Barry’s was such a win! The instructor was amazing (shout out to Emily!), the workout itself felt approachable for a new timer, yet has options for a pro who wants to push themselves. The class went by so fast and was fun! I surprised myself when I immediately booked another class. Such a safe place to learn and such an awesome building too with clean and nice equipment.

Barry’s Portland isn’t just a workout—it’s a full-on gay awakening, thanks to Tony Forte and Ace Cauthen. Having elder gays running the Red Room is everything: the playlists are basically throwback gay bar bangers, the form corrections are equal parts necessary and slightly flirty, and the energy? Pure diva-level motivation. Watching them command the mic is like watching queer royalty lead bootcamp—sweaty, fabulous, and just a little camp. Watching them own that stage reminds me that strength and pride only get better with age—and it makes every class feel like part workout, part queer church.

Had my first free class with a friend who regularly comes here. Staff was incredibly nice and the person at the counter was so friendly and helpful, going over what to expect and even gave me a welcome/good bag. I was worried because I didn’t know what to expect, but it was fun… And wow, what a great work out! I was struggling to keep up, but you can basically go at your own pace if it’s too fast for you. The instructor was nice and helped explain things to me when I was confused on certain workouts. No one in the class made me feel awkward or uncomfortable for not knowing exactly what to do at times. Loved the class. Loved the music. Loved the staff. I was even given a free smoothie on my way out!

What a fantastic workout and a great experience. I took the 7am class today and it rocked me but I feel amazing post-class. They had everything for a shower afterwards, the locker room wasn't crowded, and everything was clean. Wrapped up with a tasty smoothie from their Fuel bar, which is such an excellent addition. Will be back!

Barry's Portand!!!!🔥🔥🔥I was greeted by the brightest ray of sunshine I have ever encountered at ANY gym EVER. Blaine (may have misspelled) was vivacious, funny and had an inherent, authentic warmth that made me feel like an absolute queen. Oh yeah, and he did this at 5AM! If I lived in Portland, I would have joined as a membet on the spot just to experience that energy! After class, he had a complimentary make-your-own cold brew station set up with the absolute BEST lineup (nugget ice, sugar free creamers and vanilla syrup). 100/10!! The instructor, Janelle was an absolute boss! I travel for work, and hit Barry’s locations across the US. To be clear, every Barry’s instructor I've ever had is exceptional, however Janelle was a standout. She mentally prepared the class for what was coming (ex how many sprints, how many inclines, how long, and counted it down for the entire class). I appreciated that so that I could get through the hardest times and understand how to pace. This was my favorite Barry’s experience to date. Thank you!

Just wrapped up an incredible session at Barry's with my coworkers this morning, and I have to say, it was amazing! Amy was our instructor and she was encouraging, enthusiastic, and kept us motivated the whole time. I will definitely be signing up for more classes in the future! (The showers were also SO clean and they had such nice products to use after your workout)

Barry’s brings the heat to my workout routine. I love that I can access classes on ClassPass when I’m not ready to pay for a class pack. You can sync your accounts as well with ClassPass and Barry’s to make things really seamless for check-in. Sarah is my absolute favorite and I highly recommend working this cardio into your week if you can take it.
Staff is so nice at the front desk and I really appreciate the local vendors that pop in to sample their products and help us build our community even stronger.

If you're looking for a high-energy workout that pushes you to your limits, Barry's Portland is the place to go. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by the front desk staff. Special shoutout to Tayler and Blane!

The classes are intense and fun. The instructors do a fantastic job of making you feel supported and motivated while also challenging you. My favorite instructors are Ace, Tony and Amy.

It’s a place I look forward to coming back to. The option to get a shake after class really levels this place up and sets it apart from other fitness studios.

I love this Barry’s! I’ve been to Barry’s all over (both in the US and abroad) and this is by far my favorite one. Not only is the space itself beautiful with the floor to ceiling windows that are open on a beautiful day, but the instructors here are top notch. I’m always pushed to my limits, which results in the best workout. The front desk staff is also very kind and super helpful. I come here 1-2x a week and I look forward to coming here each time!

I love Barry’s! I started coming here after a few friends recommended their classes and now I use Barry’s as a cardio supplement on days that I don’t powerlift at my other gym. I've always been intimidated by group classes where I might look dumb doing the wrong thing, or be surrounded by fitness fanatics, and "boot camps" where instructors yell and push people to go harder even at the threat of injury. But, after a number of years doing solo gym workouts, I just got board, and decided to give Barry's a shot. I was incredibly intimidated to go to my first class, but the Portland staff is amazing. The front desk team is welcoming, and the instructor explained everything I needed to know. I absolutely messed up some moves, but no one cared, or even noticed (it helps that the room is lit by a sexy dim red light). I'm pleased to say that I went back, and now after more than a year of doing classes at Barry's I absolutely love it. Everyone in the Portland studio is so friendly, they learn your names, and the instructors are awesome. No yelling. Lots of love, and positive support. I think the word "community" gets thrown around a lot, but for a non-group-class kinda guy, Portland Barry's definitely feels like a community to me.

Barry’s is amazing. Don’t feel like you need to keep up with exactly what they say, do modifications where you need it 👍🏼

I was going from the day they opened up until I moved out of state. Now that I don’t have access to. Barry’s and use an alternative gym, I miss the energetic and educated trainers. The amenities of ear plugs, showers, towels, shampoo, … pretty much everything you need.

I never had any issues with parking on the street during morning workouts. If I went for an evening workout, I would have to walk a little distance but it wasn’t bad. I like that they still allow you in even if you’re a few minutes late.

I've gone to at least 15 classes at this location. My experience keeps getting better, every time I go. I feel more comfortable, the energy is always high and I really love how energized I feel afterwards. Any time I've felt down prior to a class, I come out with a high and ready to get after it. There is always a barrier for entry in any fitness game. This really is a choose your own adventure style of fitness. Go at your own pace. Sure, things can be uncomfortable around a bunch of people you don't know. What I do know, is every person you workout with at Barry's wants you to win.

Highly recommend Barrys and doing a workout with Seth Martin! Classes are typically 50 minutes long and have a focus such as Chest, Back, & Abs, or Upper/lower body focus. There's always some Barry's merchandise you can buy. You can pre-order protein shakes for after your workout and the bathroom is really nice. Bathroom has a shower, hairdryer, body lotion etc... These workouts will definitely push you and get you to your max heart rate!

Just hit class 50 and I'm still loving it.

Does it get easier? No. You just run faster, do more reps, and lift heavier.
Do you see results? Oh my God, yes. I go 2-3 times a week to help reverse the damage caused by working at a desk 9 hours a day. I can't believe how jacked I've gotten; it's wild to me what 2-3 hours per week in the "Red Room" can do.

First class advice:
Hydrate before class.
Bring a water bottle, ideally one that fits in a cup holder.
Start on the treadmill. You can watch the floor exercises for an extra demonstration while you run.
Walking is totally fine. It's not uncommon for some people to walk at full incline the entire time.
Don't expect to run at the suggested speeds if you're not an experienced runner.

This studio is exactly what you would expect from Barry’s. The staff are friendly and very welcoming, it’s always clean and stocked with everything you could need. Some other studios I’ve been to don’t seem to have enough of the most commonly used weights for everyone (20lbs) but they have got you covered.

I was very excited to try Barry’s but wasn’t impressed. Space is always a problem at group classes but it’s really bad here. I was constantly avoiding getting kicked or kicking someone. The locker room is also crazy small. They advertise that they carry top products in the bathrooms but there’s definitely not enough space for everyone to take advantage of them. My biggest concern though were hints of a toxic workout culture. The instructor was discouraging taking any “walking recoveries” after the sprints and I overheard some folks talking about doing multiple Barry’s workouts a day. I really hope I’m wrong here but it might not be the best place if you have a history of EDs and over exercising.

After taking almost 20 classes, I can definitely say it's a pretty fun experience. I have never seen myself as a Barry's person, but a friend of mine from another studio convinced me to try out the Portland location. The instructors definitely make a huge difference, so I highly recommend giving multiple instructors a chance. But to help you out, as of February 26th, 2023, here is who I would recommend: Rubie is easily the most easy going and will make you feel like the best person in the world. She has the most fun, and the music is very hip hop driven. Chloe is the friendliest, and she gives off major mom vibes, and someone who makes you feel like you can do anything (I highly recommend Chloe is you are a beginner). Lianne is a mix of Rubie and Chloe. Seth is the toughest, but he makes you feel like your money is well spent. Dustin is hilarious, and his music will get you hyped. I honestly don't know the other instructors because they teach all the offensively early courses (absolutely not).
If you are okay with being around a bunch of intermediate level fitness people and like fast paced music, this place is for you. If you are a beginner and haven't been to a group fitness class, this can definitely be an intimidating experience.

For those considering trying, some tips and note: when booking, choose to either start with the Floor (F) or Treadmill (T), and you will switch during class. Double Floor (DF) just means that you won't run on a treadmill, but it's still hard depending on the instructor (I sweat just as much).
Note: Just because the instructor is shouting out a number that you should be running on a treadmill, it doesn't mean that you have to do it if your body is physically unable. That would have definitely been helpful to know during my first class (I almost didn't make it with how tough Seth is. My poor knees...) I have had knee surgery myself, so I basically don't go faster than five speed for any treadmill session.

TLDR: If you like dim lighting, and loud music while sweating, this is the place for you. The community is pretty freakin awesome, and the money is definitely worth it if you are willing to put in the work. As they like to say: "hard bodies are made with hard work."

Enjoy the review!

I waited to write a review until I’d taken two classes. Both my experiences here were great. I’m not hip. I don’t live in The Pearl District. I’m a lot older than the majority of the folks here but none of that mattered. Front desk staff was super helpful and made it easy for me despite my having downloaded the wrong app (barrysX vs barrys) and a string of other small challenges that I had this morning. I wanted to take Ace’s class because his energy was what I needed after a rough work week. He didn’t disappoint. Other people in the class both times helped me as I obviously had newbie tattooed on my forehead. Lol. It’s a fast pace class so if you’re not used to HIIT it might not be a good fit. I’m not a good runner especially on a treadmill but you can adjust that to your own cardio fitness levels and you don’t get shamed.

If you haven’t done any kind of HIIT workout I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT COME HERE.

Not beginner friendly at all; the class was controlled chaos to put it nicely with very little if any personal attention paid to individuals.

Extremely bougie, and clean; facilities are some of the nicest I’ve ever seen. Plus the classes have some truly beautiful people and dimes which is why it deserves 10 stars in my book.
