The Bar Method Portland - Pearl District is a boutique fitness studio offering barre classes for students of all levels. The signature method uses your own body weight, the ballet barre and a few props to create a transformative workout that results in long, lean sculpted muscles. Not only does it reshape your entire body, but it allows you to channel your inner strength and leave class feeling strong, confident and poised. Highly-trained instructors customize the exercises to ensure they are safe and effective for any age and every body, including modifications for pregnant women and students with injuries. This review is long overdue! I joined Bar Method in the Pearl in 2021 and it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself 💙 To preface, I didn’t think I liked workout classes and had never done anything barre related. One of those didn’t matter and one of them turned out not to be true!

The studio and the amazing humans running it changed everything for me! Everyone there is so kind, knowledgeable, and honestly really fun.

The hands-on adjustments are SO helpful and I’ve been able to schedule one on one’s to go over certain exercises that I was unsure about.

There are so many class variations too! Cardio, flow, strength, restore, and the OG class is always a good one. There are challenges, dress up days, and studio events; I look forward to the Glow in the Dark Class every year.

I was an athlete growing up but never really found a fitness routine as an adult. Bar Method has given me the ability to feel strong and confident in my body and that means so much.

If you’re on the fence about going…DO IT!!! You will be so grateful that you did.

I’m addicted! I love that my whole body has to show up for each class. I love that the floor is carpeted and my cranky knees really like that. I love that the teachers tell me when I’m an inch out of position. I love that they mix in cardio, weights, yoga and restore throughout the week. Mostly, I love that I am 52 and in better shape than I was at 22. You know you are a super fan when you will drive from the Southeast to the Northwest for this all week but when a friend moves across the river you are like, “Hope to see you sometime this year!” I love the challenges and will do about anything for a pair of Bar Method socks. I have been taking Pilates classes for many years, decades
actually. I've taken reformer, floor, mat, and bar, both in private sessions and group classes. Tashina's studio in the Pearl District combines the best of all my excellent experiences from all across the country. No matter what the size of the class, each student is given individual attention suited to the level and needs of that person. Plus if you have not tried "The Bar Method" you are in for a treat. Its an intense, laser focused and extremely methodical total body workout. It will be difficult, but you will have fun and be challenged and, if you stick with it, you will get results. This is a well run serious operation. There are seasonal
challenges with prizes and great promotional offers. Give yourself a gift! Oh, by the way, the staff is warm and welcoming
and will help you feel right at home as soon as you open the door. No intimidation no fear.

This is a long overdue review. I have been attending classes at The Bar Method in the Pearl for 4 years now and am so grateful to have found this studio. The Bar Method is unique in that the instructors learn your name and provide individualized recommendations and hands-on adjustments to improve your movements, enhance the exercises, and prevent injuries. For this reason I have seen a significant increase in my flexibility, strength, stamina, and energy over this period of time. Plus the classes are fun which is an added bonus.

First time at this location, HORRIBLE experience. I was singled out because I was pregnant. I know my body and what I can and can’t do and am currently training for a triathlon. Barre class is only there for me as a “recovery” and is not a serious workout for me. Anyway, when I asked her (Maggie) to please allow me forgo the modifications bc the modifications don’t feel good for my body, she continued to harass me in front of the entire class. It got so bad to the point I had to just leave midway through class. I’ll never be back, horribly embarrassing and horribly disrespectful. I know this Bar Method doesn’t represent all franchises but this location could really use training on how to NOT treat clients. Never had to leave a class halfway through before due to instructor treatment.

Wow, I was so impressed with my first class and this place!

First, I joined this studio with the current promotion of $99 for unlimited classes, and I'm so excited to try them all!!

All the staff and other members were ALL so genuinely kind, supportive and helpful! I'm a bit out of shape and trying to get back into things, and having a welcoming environment is so important, especially when you're already uncomfortable.

The class itself was intense, in a good way! I started with the 45-minute cardio class, and it was an immediate workout!! Challenging, but doable, even as someone who's starting over in my fitness journey. Can't wait for my next class!

Love this studio. They have a whole slew of 45min classes that fit really nice in my work schedule. I would never say this is easy. It’s a hard intense workout, but by the time you can’t go any more it’s over and you feel amazing and crave more. It’s a nice mix of fun music and little movements that make your muscles light up.

I have been taking classes at the Bar Method for a couple months now and have benefited from boosted energy and focus and an almost disappearance of tension headaches, which usually plague me regularly. The teachers, owner, and reception staff are all lovely. Teachers learn your name and work with you to improve your movement throughout class to ensure you do the exercises safely and effectively. You'll find a range of ages and bodies in classes, and teachers seem comfortable adapting exercises to all bodies. The cherry on top are the facilities - clean exercise rooms and props, clean towels, nice showers, changing rooms, and bathrooms. I've never belonged to a gym I enjoyed working out at this much.

I have been attending classes at Bar Method Portland since they opened in 2004 (?). There's a reason this fabulous studio has endured - amazing workouts with excellent instructors, clean & beautiful studios, super friendly staff & community. With all the ways to workout, nothing beats this one. Every muscle group is targeted (I am always far more sore - in a good way - than any weight training I do elsewhere) & I have never experienced any kind of injury doing it. Classes are always different so one never gets bored. I never even look to see which class I am signing up for or who is teaching - I just click the time & I have never been disappointed! I can't say enough wonderful things about Bar Method Portland - Pearl. I have been doing this barre workout for years and always feel challenged. There is a lot of variety in class types and exercises to keep things interesting. The instructors are truly the best. Between the amazing full-body exercises and sense of community between the other clients and instructors, this quickly became my favorite place. Whether you’re looking for a workout that will challenge your body & mind or are ready to belong to a radiant community of people this is the place for you!
Not only will your body love the attention, but it’ll also show all the work you are putting in. My favorite thing about the classes is that persons of all ages, body types, and representations are present and unite to enjoy the benefits of each class. There is a class style for every person and a great, healthy activity to do with a friend(s) and the studio even does private events for those girls weekends/getaways or bachelorette party sweat session.
I’ve also been to other studios and Pearl District Bar Method here in Portland is doing things right as a business and as a supporter of health goals and community involvement and empowerment.

The Bar Method has been my workout staple since I moved to Portland 4 years ago. I’m forever grateful for discovering the toning, strength and endorphins that every class provides. And being able to stay in shape while I was pregnant was amazing! I took classes 4-5 times a week until 2 weeks before my baby girl arrived. That really helped me get back in shape post-baby. These classes are for anyone! They are very difficult but can be modified for any body type or fitness level without judgement. Instructors correct our form to ensure safety and we are getting the most out of each workout. All staff are super supportive and eager to help.
I often feel like not going to class but I’m always so happy and relaxed afterwards. My body is loving me for doing this.
We have plenty of room to spread out and they are taking all the necessary precautions as far as covid is concerned.

I love this place! All the staff are very friendly and helpful. Everything is clean and all the details have been taken into account: there are extra spray deodorant & hair ties, available showers, and towels galore!

Instructors and assistants help you to find the perfect posture in every pose, which I love because I'm always concerned that I've got something wrong in other group classes. Some people who really dislike being called out in a group might find this off putting, but every person in the room is given a verbal adjustment at some point. Any time I have a question I have been given answers with loads of detail to help me build certain muscles or understand why something is. There is a lot of encouragement, too!

I joined during their monthly special, and it has been an overall amazing and positive experience so far. I've participated in over 10 classes, and every time I go in, the staff is so warm and welcoming and puts me at ease immediately. The facilities are clean and decorated to make you feel like you're being cocooned in warmth. The rooms are large with high ceilings, and there are ceiling fans to help cool you off when things are getting hot. The instructors know you by name, helping to correct any postures that need it, and they are tough (but kind)! I can already see changes in my body- the shaking legs and total body exhaustion is paying off. I highly recommend this for anyone looking to get a challenging whole body work out.

This is a consistently awesome workout with definite visible results. If you want long and lean, this is your place. As far as exercising goes, bar is really minimally painful. I never dread going and I feel GREAT after. The instructors are so nice and funny and positive—they are very motivating without being over the top. A couple of years ago I was having terrible knee pain that was really impacting my running, and since I’ve been doing bar, I am cured. My posture is way better too. I am not an exercise class kind of person but I will always come to bar!

I love The Bar Method. Have been going on and off for several years now. It truly is the best bang for my buck. I like that I can give one hour of my time and my whole body is rewarded. It's always a full body workout from biceps, triceps to glutes and thighs. With intermittent stretching throughout. As a former dancer I appreciate the attention to form and body positioning. The instructors are thoroughly trained to help keep you safe as well as getting you the most out of your workout. It's amazing what a correction of a half inch this way or that way with your leg or arm will do for effectiveness!! If you want a challenge and to really see what you're capable of, try it out! Dont forget to drink lots of water after and get your tub ready for soaking. You can thank me later. Enjoy!!

I decided to try The Bar Method Portland after being a member at the studio in San Francisco so I tried it on Classpass. This was the biggest mistake. I arrived a few minutes early to class and tried walking in to take the class but the person at the front desk wouldn’t let me in. I had already signed the waivers and she said because I was new I couldn’t go in. I told her I had a membership at Bar Method in San Francisco and even named the addresses of both studios. But still wasn’t let into the class. On top of this they let in 3-4 women after me. I wouldn’t have been so upset if they didn’t let any people in after they had rejected me.

After writing them, the owner completely backed up the employee working and didn’t offer a class to make up for the awful customer service. After driving across town, paid for parking, they couldn’t let me in the class. I will attend other locations as I love the other bar method studios in the bay area but not this one. I have recently sought out other bar studios pure barre, barre3 and industrial barre who seem to care about customer service.

I’ve never received so much personal attention in a class workout environment before! I’ve taken 10 classes at the Portland Bar Method studio now, and every one of the instructors learned my name immediately. By name, they call out constructive corrections frequently for lots of people in the class (myself included—I need a lot of help with my form!) The instructors will also physically correct your form as needed.

The workouts are really challenging, but I feel like they’re very efficient. You work every major muscle group until it feels like you’re going to drop, but you leave feeling energized and healthy. The Bar Express class keeps your heartrate elevated the whole time, but isn’t cardio-based. They do offer more cardio-focused classes for advanced students, but I haven’t gotten that far yet.

The facilities are also really nice. The locker room offers lock-able lockers with keys (so you don’t have to bring your own lock!), towels, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the showers, as well as a surprisingly nice vanity area with hair dryers, spray deodorant if you forgot yours, and a few hair products. The studio rooms are clean and bright, with lots of natural light filtered through window screens, so it’s still private (people on the street can’t see in). Instructors put out equipment for you throughout the class, too, so it all feels very pampered.

I was wary of the price (especially since there’s a 24-Hour Fitness a few blocks away), but I did the $99 1-month trial, and already know I’ll be signing up for the monthly plan. It’s miles above any gym I’ve been to, and also better than any boutique studio I’ve tried. Feels 100% worth it to me.

This is a great studio that will give you a fantastic workout that targets all areas of the body. I love that you don't wear shoes during the workouts (socks only!). The staff and instructors here are very friendly and helpful. If you're considering trying-out a "barre" workout, it's definitely worth signing up for the new client special and going as much as you can in that month. I only wish the ongoing pricing wasn't so high. Overall, a great value for your money.

The instructors are so well trained and professional I really value the adjustments in classes. Also all staff has been super welcoming, encouraging and welcoming. The studio is so comfortable and well designed... with all the needed amenities. Lastly the exercises work better than any "barre" classes and I've tried them all. I was getting injured at B3 with too many squats and too much "cardio" hybrid moves without adjustments or postural corrections. Ab work here is amazing

From the minute I interacted with the staff at The Bar Method Portland I felt welcome. Jill booked two classes for me. Rachel was so warm and kind when I arrived for my first visit. Shaina taught a killer class. I was so impressed with the strength and stamina of the clients in my class. I was also humbled when Simon, another client, offered condolences for the passing of the Kansas City Bar Method owner, Hoddy Potter. Sylvia was in class with me and was very approachable, even recommending places for breakfast after class. My second visit was equally as enjoyable. I Love the workout, the commitment you feel once you enter the class to push through and get it done, the burn and the shake on my muscles that really make me feel like is doing something to the shape of my body, I never found a workout before that make me feel so engage and willing to "suffer" in a good way, to make it happen. I would recommend your studio to everyone. I loved the 2 large studios with lots of light. The locker room, showers and bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The front desk staff was friendly. I felt right at home. The location was convenient. (although the parking wasn’t great) I love the Bar Method and have been going for 7 plus years. It’s my primary workout and it’s fun. Both the Client Experience Specialist and the Teacher for the class I attended were beyond welcoming and comforting, which started the experience off in the best way possible. Then, when I was actually in class, the Teacher's attentiveness to me was the icing on the cake--she made sure I was not only keeping up but actually following along in a way that allowed me to maximize my benefits from class; she did so by helping me set up mats, guiding my beginner form, cheering me on, and congratulating me at the end of class. I can not work well in gyms on my own because I don't know what to do or what body muscles need work. My training in gyms were aimless and I also wouldn't push myself if I'm tired.

I love the complete body workout with both it's intensity and focus on safe posture. I enjoy getting stronger yet ALWAYS being challenged. Great studio with really attentive instructors and helpful front desk. The locker room is immaculate and offers a comprehensive supply of toiletries (hair ties being the most important!).

Be mindful that the instructors know everyone's name and will call you out if your form is not accurate. With an intense job, I personally prefer a bit more hands off, but if the pressure is motivating, this studio is perfect for you.

The Bar Method Portland is special... it is a spa where you get your muscles toned and your confidence lifted.

From the minute you walk through the door you see that there was careful thought behind every single detail in the studio. The staff is friendly and helpful, the instructors are knowledgeable and approachable. Unlike other barre fitness programs, The Bar Method instructors go through a very strict training that lasts up to 6 months until certification and then they continue the never-ending journey to keep helping clients achieve their physical and mental goals.

You will work out EVERY muscle in your body - including the smiling and frowning muscles ;-) - in one hour of class. The difference between this and other interval workout programs is that stretches have been incorporated throughout the class while the muscle is still warm from exhaustion and therefore more pliable. Your flexibility WILL increase (give it time) and don't be surprised if you see magnificent results in other areas of your life. Plenty of people have commented on how much time they've shaved off marathons, improved their skiing, tennis and even golf games!

I've been going to the Bar Method for 3.5 years and it is the best investment I have made in myself. The benefits have spilled onto other areas of my life as my confidence and mental strength have increased and I am a much happier person!
