I highly recommend Woodlawn Fitness. The staff are very welcoming. I haven’t done any exercise in a very long time, and this gym is very encouraging and inclusive even with the high level of athletes they have there. Jonathan Hopwood Is an amazing teacher. He is very skilled at breaking down instructions into easy to follow steps. He also gives important body mechanics information to make sure you are making each move count and keeping you safe from injury.

Woodslawn Fitness has the best Coaches and community! At 48 year's young, I'm stronger and fitter than when I was in my 30's. I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma but haven't needed my inhaler since building my lung capacity at Woodslawn Crossfit!
Update September 2025: 1:1 Coaching with Coach Chase: Shout out to Coach Chase and his 1:1 lessons! Coach Chase listens to what I want to work on and gives me accessible yet challenging progressions. I am learning double unders, butterfly pullups and handstand. I am so grateful for the past 3 years that I've been at Woodslawn!

I've been a member here since April of 2022 and having recently turned 51 it's been life changing in all the right ways. It's a great community and the coaches and management are outstanding.
The culture here is one of inclusion, education and support - not once have I felt intimidated or "out of my league" despite being a little overweight and inexperienced with this sort of fitness. That said, there are some impressive and inspiring athletes of all ages in every class - you'll be challenged no matter your fitness level. Quality of movement and safety are emphasized over quantity and speed, and the coaches demonstrate every single exercise involved in a given workout while explaining the physiology and purpose. Knee acting up? Just complain a little and you'll get real-time advice on alternative "scaled" movements.
I've done a program of nutrition coaching with Anna, a successful regimen of sciatica PT with Tyler (the stellar in-house physical therapist who also designs a lot of the workouts) and several small-group programs with Dan, Sam, Jonathan and Tyler. You get a lot for your money here, and the online class scheduling/tracking/training system couldn't be easier to use. Highly recommended!

At 49, I was nervous to get back into working out after a long break, but Chase at Woodslawn made the process completely welcoming. He’s patient, encouraging, and never made me feel judged. I now love my workouts and no longer feel intimidated thanks to Chase and all of the other Woodslawn staff. Couldn’t ask for a better trainer!

I have been at Woodslawn for a little over two years - first in CrossFit and now working with Coach Chase doing 1:1 coaching. Chase has helped me rehab a back injury - starting at a place where I could hardly walk and graduating to lifting heavy again and gaining strength and confidence. As a 63 year old active woman, he has tailored my work outs so that I am getting stronger and also focusing on maintaining agility, balance, flexibility, and mobility. Last week I had a fall where I sprained my ankle (crossing the street wearing a 25 pound work back pack and rolling my ankle in a sinkhole). It could have been a whole lot worse. I credit Chase with helping me build the strength so that I didn't get badly hurt (and break something) and also the resilience to recover quickly. In one week I am back to doing regular workouts and have lost very little strength and flexibility in my ankle. Thanks Coach Chase and thanks Woodslawn Fitness!!

I'm in my early 60's and have been fairly active all of my life. As time marches on, the reality of losing muscle happens. This has been tough to accept. However, coming to Woodslawn, and making a two day/week commitment to work with Jonathan has changed this! Early in the summer, I purchased 5 large, ceramic, garden pots that needed to be moved from my car to the backyard. I'm not confident that I would have been able to do this before I started my personal training, and now I can! I lifted each of them, carried them to their new home and did not have one bit of difficulty or pain. Feeling AND being strong is so important at this time in my life and I am thankful for Jonathan and everyone at Woodslawn!

Woodslawn’s on-ramp was great. Jonathan taught me the proper way to perform many weight lifting movements. As a middle aged man who has been working from home for several years without much exercise, Woodslawn made it easier to transition into working out again. After the on-ramp program, I have lost 10lbs, and because I have a higher focus, I’m paying attention to what goes into my body more. The rest of the athletes and coaches have been great as well. They help me tune my workout by working with me to perform the workout with alternative but similar movements that fit my body and experience level. I’ve signed up to continue with the Cross-Fit workouts.

I love training at this gym! I work with Coach Jonathan in the small group training sessions, and it’s been awesome. Each class focuses on a different body part in segments, so with just two sessions a week, we’re able to cover both arms and legs — super efficient and effective.
One of the things I appreciate most is the flexibility. If I ever miss a class, it’s easy to jump into another session and make it up. All of the coaches are incredibly nice, supportive, and knowledgeable. They always provide helpful feedback on form and offer suggestions that push you to get stronger while staying safe. I feel challenged, motivated, and supported every time I walk in. Highly recommend!

Can't recommend this place enough. It's more than a gym - it's a wonderful inclusive community that literally has changed my life. I've been attending an early morning small group strength class, coached by Sam (who is amazing), and have seen incredible gains in fitness and strength over the past several years. This business is truly invested in making the community a better place. 10/10 recommend.

I have been doing CrossFit for almost eight years and nothing compares to the community, programming, and continual progress I’ve found at Woodslawn. The entire team is so knowledgeable and many of the members have become great friends of ours, in and out of the gym. Chase’s recent Olympic lifting seminars were incredibly well-structured with thoughtful progressions that made even the most complex movements feel much more approachable. Each session was full of tips that improved my technique and confidence—with a few PRs along the way. He strikes the ideal balance between challenging me and still helping refine small details that lead to real progress. I am grateful to have found a gym that is so invested in members of all levels, and particularly in helping experienced athletes keep growing. I’m excited for what’s ahead!

I write this review as I celebrate my 2 year anniversary at Woodslawn Gym!
Woodslawn has completely changed me—physically and mentally. The community is local residents, super supportive, down-to-earth, and focused on real health, not ego. The trainers are encouraging and knowledgeable, and Dan (the owner) has built something really special here. If you’re looking for a place to grow stronger in every way, this is it. I look forward to my gym days at Woodslawn because I know I’m getting stronger, will have fun & be a better person at work & for my family at home. I highly recommend Woodslawn to anyone who is looking to change their life for the better!

If you want to feel better- this is the place to go. Are you nervous or scared to go to a gym? This is the place to go. I had never joined a gym so this was a nerve racking experience. I was so nervous- would people be looking at me, judging me , taking note on how I didn’t know how to do certain things or how I looked - that fear and nervousness lasted about 5 minutes. Everyone at this gym is here for the same reason I went here- to feel better - no judgement- it’s okay to look different, think different, be different- your welcome here and celebrated not just by the coaches but by everyone at the gym because everyone coming to the gym is here for the same thing- to feel better and be better - it’s a great group.
I am a nurse- and healthcare taught me lots of things - like it’s okay to miss a meal- not take a break etc. but being a part of this gym has taught me that all of that is not okay- if you don’t care for yourself you can’t care for your patients. Self care is the least selfish thing that someone can do. Being a part of this gym has solidified that for me. I feel better because I am taking care of myself. The coaches have assisted me in making better choices- about exercise, food, drink, sleep- and all of those things have made me feel great. I have more energy, I sleep better, my emotional health is better- I am happier. The staff helped me to learn how to make better choices- I don’t obsess over those things but I make better choices because I know what it felt like to feel crummy- what I have learned at Woodslawn is that it’s not how many sit-ups you can do or how much you can lift or what your weight is- it’s about being healthy physically mentally and emotionally. Enjoying life and making good choices without stressing over it. Want to be happier and healthier? This is the gym to do that

Woodslawn provides the “magic” I needed to do strength-training correctly & consistently. As I head into my “golden years,” I want to maintain good health and the ability to continue moving confidently. The coaches at Woodslawn and the semi-private classes with other “teammates” give me the instruction, motivation . . . and FUN I was searching for to help me lengthen my “health span.”

I joined Woodslawn 2.5 years ago and can truly say it's been the best decision I've made for my fitness goals and overall well-being. Having gone to a couple other CrossFit gyms in the country and made to feel like a complete outsider, I was nervous to join another gym - but Woodslawn welcomed me with open arms and expert, individualized support. Their coaches are amazing - from teaching beginners to helping tenured CrossFit athletes improve their form, they are consistent, attentive, and give kind, constructive feedback. Woodslawn helped me stay mentally positive and physically strong through a knee surgery, a pregnancy, and a back injury: providing me with safe, scaled movements and a flexible membership. I've come out the other side of all way stronger and more confident - at the gym, on the bike, and on the trails. The community at Woodslawn is full of positive, like-minded, goal-focused members who crush life in all its forms: professionals, parents, travelers, endurance athletes... you name it and you will find your kin.

Training at Woodslawn has been a much-needed new challenge and refresh for me! I am a 45-year-old woman, in an extremely busy phase of life, and have never done strength training/lifting in a serious way — some light free weights for video-based HIIT workouts at home, nothing more. I feel invigorated and it’s so exciting to see progress. I also really like the social accountability of the semi-private classes, I typically go at 6am and it’s a great way to start the day. I’ve worked with Jonathan (who was an amazing asset during my on-ramp), Chase and Dan and the approach is perfect for me — pushing to do more, celebrating wins, none of the toxic stereotypical gym energy I’ve experienced in some other settings. For me this has absolutely been worth the investment!

I joined Woodslawn’s semi-private fitness program about 6 months ago, after taking a long break from working out due to an injury. Though I was nervous to try a crossfit gym at first, the team at Woodslawn met me where I was at. They paired me with Coach Chase, who has thoughtfully guided me on my journey to building strength and healthy routines in my life. He has a deep knowledge of physiology and movement mechanics, paired with empathy and passion to support people in reaching their goals. I’ve noticed more energy and optimism in my life since joining. The team at Woodslawn has built a culture of community and fun around the workouts that keeps me coming back.

I highly recommend the coaches and staff at Woodslawn Fitness! After an extended break due to an injury, I've recently started working out again. The team at Woodslawn has been incredible, helping me find the right path forward and ensuring I avoid any setbacks.
I completed the semi-private onramp program, and coaches Chase, Dan, and Jonathan have been fantastic. They know when to hold me back when I push too hard and encourage me when I doubt myself. Having been involved in CrossFit and functional fitness for over 15 years, I can confidently say that Woodslawn has one of the most welcoming and professional environments I've ever experienced.

Can't recommend this place enough. Coming from a different type of athletic background I'd never done any of the Olympic lifts or other CrossFit style workouts. The onboarding was a fantastic introduction to these moves and allowed me move into the daily classes with relative ease.

I've had a great experience at Woodslawn Fitness. I am returning to fitness as a mom in my 40s, and was intrigued but uncertain about what the experience would be like and if I would/could fit in at a gym, especially one that was crossfit inspired. Now, 4 weeks in, I can confidently say that I am finding my place here. The environment is rooted in a culture of care and the instructors are visibly committed to meeting their clients where they are, without judgement. They actively remove barriers many parents experience to working out - you can bring your (well-behaved) kid, flex your schedule, customize your workout, and be forgiven for arriving a little late - which are all small things that make a big difference. The owners and staff at Woodslawn are cultivating a unique and welcoming space for fitness that intentionally exists outside of the typical gym stereotype, while also offering all the knowledge, tough workouts, and benefits one would expect. Whether you have a regular fitness routine that you are looking to enhance, or just getting back into it, I would highly recommend giving this place a try.

Coach Chase made my on-ramp experience top notch. I’m a total nerd so what I appreciate was the deep education I got on top of the productive workouts. He is knowledgeable and could offer modifications, stretches, and more to ensure I lifted safely and comfortably. I came in with zero experience and never once felt intimidated. I did a mix of private and semi-private classes that helped me focus on areas of priority for me and met lovely people in the small classes. Along the way I also met Jonathan who helped get me organized and Anna who leads their nutrition program. Woodslawn is such a community spot easily accessible in SW. On top of running a great local business, Dan has always been generous to make donations to the local elementary school with PE equipment. I’m so grateful to have a local gym with amazing humans and fantastic group, semi private, and private class options.

I came to Woodslawn with no CrossFit experience and with limited expectation, except of what I had heard, that CrossFit is hard. What I share is: take the jump, Woodslawn diligently onboards newcomers; participation is up to you, I balance CrossFit with golf, so three days a week is my sweet spot; it is hard but the instructors meet you where you are, they will adjust the day's workout to your ability but they will push; CrossFit is functional fitness and will improve your mental outlook, I am stronger, more flexible, and happier since joining Woodslawn; and we are a community. I see the owner, his wife and kids and have opportunities to attend parties and workouts outside the gym. It is a group of good, caring people. I am very appreciative of what the gym has given me.

The coaches at Woodslawn are top-notch. Each one brings a personalized approach to training that makes every session varied, effective, and enjoyable. They know their stuff, but more importantly, they take the time to understand your goals and challenges.
The community at Woodslawn is one of its greatest strengths. The camaraderie among members creates a motivating and uplifting atmosphere. It’s not just about lifting weights or mastering a new skill; it’s about building lasting relationships and celebrating each other's successes.

Hi, I'm a 69 year old woman who, before retirement, had a desk job for 30+ years. Within the last 6 months, I started coming to semi-private strength building classes at Woodslawn. I'm loving the classes. Most recently I have noticed that my whole back is feeling much stronger.
I assumed that I'd get weaker with age. To the contrary I'm feeling stronger and more secure in my body than ever before. Jonathan is a great coach and our classes are fun, well planned and focused. I look forward to them and leave feeling like I challenged myself just the right amount to improve overall. I'm so glad that Woodslawn Fitness is an accessible and welcoming place, or I may have been intimidated to check it out.

I had an absolutely wonderful time at Woodslawn! The social support you get from going to a class-based gym has been astoundingly helpful for me. Brandon was the coach I saw for my on ramp, and he was great at making me feel comfortable in a new environment, encouraging me to work hard, and taking the time to explain how to correctly move. I saw Jonathan for private coaching before I left the gym to travel, and he helped me develop a plan for my fitness after I left the gym so I could continue my strength and movement training. Everyone here is passionate about what they do and it shows in the quality of coaching you receive by subscribing to the gym. Highly recommend!

I started an eight-week personal training session with Jonathan at Woodslawn Fitness two months ago. I had just recovered from a health issue and knew I needed help to get over my physical limitations and the fear that had built up––fear that the pain wasn’t fleeting, fear of getting older, and all the negative thoughts associated with it.
Jonathan’s personalized lessons showed me from day one that I could do more than I thought I could. As I learned more about the muscles involved in the exercises and how to access and feel them, something clicked. It was not only that I’m older now that I couldn’t do certain exercises, but that I had never trained, systematically and consistently, to do them.
Thanks to Jonathan's help, I am empowered, hopeful, and highly motivated, ready to exercise and see how far I can get.

I'm old-ish and am suffering from lingering sports injuries. Surgery and phys therapy are over and I'm left with a tricky knee and tricky arm. So when I was looking for a gym, I sent out my objectives: Get fit, feel better, and AVOID FURTHER INJURY.
I signed up for individual lessons with Dan, and my investment & trust were absolutely well placed. Dan occupies a very unique space between medical physical therapy and a hardcore crossfit coach. He has meticulous knowledge, through schooling, of anatomy, and applies that in my sessions to help me avoid further injury, and strengthen safely using crossfit methods. When I asked friends about crossfit, they warned me that "crossfit causes injury" but in my experience it's the opposite. Crossfit through my lessons with Dan are helping treat my injuries, and I'm confident that my fitness increases will help avoid future injuries.
Dan has a system, and is flexible enough to adjust the workouts so that I don't exacerbate my injuries if I'm in some discomfort.
Highest recommend.

I’m very impressed with the attention he pays to good form and functional movement, especially since my retirement-age mom has joined his “Legends” class and the impact has been life-changing. Sincerely - thank you Dan..
Saddened to see the couple of negative posts here, especially given Dan’s tremendous gifts and the positive impact he has on his clients - after researching briefly it’s clear to me that a couple of disgruntled employees from the adjacent Papa John’s pizza have mounted a mostly ineffectual smear campaign (just click on their “profiles” and you’ll see the telltale signs of not terribly well thought out false ratings)
In the meantime, I plan on being back every chance I get, and will gladly encourage everyone I know in Portland to give Dan and CrossFit Woodslawn a try - what he has to offer will change your life.

Dan has designed a workout experience based on CrossFit for “seniors” which focuses on mobility and balance which is brilliant! He is always encouraging and creates a fun and positive workout!

Hands down best experience you’ll have with organized fitness... the community is down to earth, supportive and people you actually want to spend time with (even at 5:30 a.m.!). Dan is a perfect coach regardless of your age, experience with crossfit, or current level of fitness. He meets you where you’re at, and while he pushes you, you never have to worry about being unsafe or risking injury. Regardless if you’re hoping to be a competitive crossfit athlete, or if you’re hoping to improve fitness and mobility, CrossFit Woodslawn is the best place in town.

I would highly recommend CrossFit Woodslawn for women of any age! I am a 30+ year old who was never athletic and a bit pudgy throughout the years. I thought that Crossfit would never be an option for me, yet thankfully, I was wrong! I love CrossFit for far too many reasons than I could list here, but the top three would be: 1) I now have energy and strength to do what I want to do! 2) Variety of workouts; there is never a dull moment! 3) Community! The people I have met via CrossFit Woodslawn have been the best!
So if you are a woman of any age, please come visit! In my class, we range from 33-66 years old and its wonderful to see the changes happening in all of us under Dan's guidance!!!
p.s. Dan is awesome! He truly cares about helping people and he programs workouts to challenge us both physically and mentally!
