News flash...after over 60 years the gym has closed. Terrible loss to the community, area and our city's heritage.

Been here since Feb '16. Great workout equipment, and trainers for all walks of life.

UPDATE: As of last week (1st week of FEB 2018), 12th Street Gym will be closed, for good. I received the update from a good friend of mine who had a membership, for life, and he was more suprised than all of us. No idea what they plan to build, or even do with the building, but 12th Street Gym is no more.

Inconsistent customer service at member services desk always make this one of the most difficult places to do business. You never knew what you were going to get. And, the customer was not always right. Trainers were excellent. Gym was mediocre.

This gym does the job. There is a mix of old and newer equipment. If you don't mind a bit of an older feel and some grit to your workout, then this is the place to be. All classes are free with your membership. There are multiple floors of equipment and plenty of weights to throw around. Hit up the health bar for a post-workout smoothie.

Remember when you were a kid and your mom would vacuum in front of the TV while you were trying to watch cartoons? Imagine that but while you're trying to use a mirror to watch your form, or around your feet while you're using a bench, or pretty much everywhere 90 mins before closing time. Clean after/before open hours...

P.S. The employee who angrily racks weights and screams the "closing time" announcements at night needs to be canned.

DO NOT GO TO THIS TERRIBLE GYM.
(1) Personal trainers bother you during your workouts trying to get you to sign up for personal training sessions. Relentless.
(2) Girlfriend who was also a member has horrible toxic mold response when she spends more than 15 minutes in this place. It most likely has serious mold issues. Makes sense because the place is nasty, cramped, and sweaty and the A/C isn't on enough to handle the load. Nothing is cleaned well enough. Plan to get a few skin rashes and/or ringworm within a few workouts, not to mention the breathing problems from the mold. Disgusting.
(3) Management is a bunch of liars. I signed up for a year membership last October simply for use of the salt water pool due to my bad skin. No other salt water pools in the area. Go figure, they shut down the pool less than a month later. I was pissed and tried to get my money back for the 11+ months left of my membership. They refused, but offered me free use of the remaining gym space without it counting against my membership until the pool reopened. It was documented. I then complained roughly every month for a whole year because nobody would give me any updates on the pool and it's reopening date kept slipping. Yeah, a whole year later and it's still not reopened! But now my lease is ending and so I want out of the membership. I tried to reason with management but they refuse to reimburse me for anything and are now saying that my membership has expired since I kept using the gym while the pool was closed. I said, yeah, that was only because of the courtesy that you extended to me since you wouldn't let me cancel my membership and I couldn't use any alternative pool back when you shut the pool down a year ago! They said that my "arrangement" never existed. I was berated and hung up on by two of their managers. So much for the customer always being right. So much for my veteran status meaning nothing to them. It's all about the money. F this place.

This is a very comfortable place to work out. I hate normal gyms where everything is in one large room. There many smaller rooms with a variety of equipment in each room. It’s easy to find a quiet nook to work out in or you could be in a crowded nook. Your choice. I’ve never enjoyed working out so much. It’s in the gayborhood so please be gay friendly if you attend. You may catch some eyes gazing at you but everyone is friendly and respectful.

Great location for people in the city. Amazing gym etiquette all around. Dumbbells ALWAYS re-racked, same with the plates, and people always willing to let you work in. PTs are very friendly and willing to help/give tips even if you’re not their client. Highly recommend this gym if you can afford it. (Ask for the student discount!)

I loved going here. Only canceled because I am moving to another part of the city. The manager Jim and the employees are very friendly and nice. Some of the equipment is dated but that did not bother me and never got in the way of my workout. Come to think of it, the equipment always worked and never had the "being repaired" sign which is not what I can say for more updated gyms I've been to (cough cough -la fitness). I originally thought I would not like the sectioned layout but I ended up loving it. Really gonna miss this gym!

Decent gym, friendly people, up to date equipment, excellent personal trainers. The new pool is great. The layout is difficult though - spread over many floors/levels with stairs being the ONLY way to access the pool or any of workout areas or equipment. If you are going to a gym for therapy or have any serious physical difficulties this is NOT the place to check out.

Just checking out gyms and using trials. So far I was impressed that the gym was much bigger than I had expected and had loads of equipment. The problem I had was nobody wanted to show me around on my first day and the employees were not very approachable or helpful. There was one guy that was nice enough to help me out after I seen him walking around and noticed he worked there. I took a Zumba class and I really liked the room we danced in. It was pretty fun and the trainer was happy and energetic. I did not get to try all three days out unfortunately, but not sure if I will join due to the lack of basic attention I should have received on my first and only day. Not even a follow-up or anything ??
I felt out of place and uncomfortable, which is why I didn't even bother using any equipment

Beyond the some dated equipment, this gym seeks to have every set of workout equipment you could want (including freeqeights and barbells). The only room for improvement would be a designated location for Olympic lifts/Crossfit-esque workouts.

My experience at 12th Street was very positive. The gym staff were always hospitable, and the different areas of the gym (weight rooms, locker rooms, dance/exercise studios) were very clean, and the management were very professional and pleasant to work with. When I needed to leave Philadelphia to attend to personal matters out-of-state 6 mos. before my membership ended, Kelli and Frank were very understanding and helped coordinate for me to get a partial refund, which was far more than I ever expected.

When I return to Philly, I'll return to 12th Street.

I have been generally happy with this gym, which I joined a couple of months ago. The rates are reasonable, and it's never so crowded that I can't find a free machine. But several times recently it has been incredibly hot in the upstairs cardio rooms, and the air conditioning did not seem to be on. It must have been 80, 85 degrees in there this evening, easy. (The temperature outside was around 72 degrees). It really felt like a sauna. They seem to be relying on open windows and ceiling fans, even though there are a/c units, which obviously doesn't work well in small rooms with a lot of people working out. I asked to speak to a manager and she was incredibly rude and unhelpful, telling me at first that 'it's good for you to work out in the heat', and then that they are not allowed to turn the a/c on until it reaches a certain temperature OUTSIDE (but didn't tell me what that temperature is, or when that will be - and of course the temperature outside is irrelevant if it's boiling hot inside, that means you need the a/c on!), and then that the a/c WAS in fact on in one of the cardio rooms, was broken in another, and finally that she had been up there and it was 'not hot'. I was speechless. I would leave if I could, but they made me pay for an entire year in advance :-(

So far so good, I'm one month deep and have no real complaints, I love the amount of classes they offer and how they range in activity level. Some of the equipment and parts of the gym need some rehabbing but that's ok because this gym is in a great location, everyone is super friendly and their rates are completely reasonable. I just wish they stayed open later sat/sun! Some of us who work late miss out on two days!!

I've been a member to this gym for several years now and I cannot imagine joining a different gym. Unlike many other gyms, 12th Street offers a huge number of group classes and they are always free. It is one of the few gyms in the city that has a pool which is a great option for exercising or just relaxing. The sun deck provides a nice place to get some sun without having to be a little awkward by sitting in Washington Square in your bathing suit. The clientele is diverse, so there are nice people to look at but you don't feel intimidated because there are lots of regular folks of all shapes and ages.

12th Street is ALWAYS doing something to improve the member's experience. They seem to constantly be renovating some part of the building to offer something new or better utilize the space. New equipment and programs are always being added.

However, my favorite part of the 12th Street Gym is matter of personal preference. I really like how the gym is divided up into many smaller rooms. While the layout of the space is a little confusing at first it is really nice to be in smaller, exercise-specific areas. It makes me feel less intimidated. I personally don't know why anyone likes those single large room gyms. 12th Street is cozy and makes me feel comfortable about exercising.

All gym memberships are pricey, at least with the 12th Street Gym, you get a great value for your money. They gym is clean, smells good, and the staff (especially the front desk) are extremely friendly.

I was a member of the 12th street gym. Due to job loss and upcoming eviction I knew I would be moving out of the area to realities as of may 2009. I informed Melissa the asst manager of this first verbally, then by writing in March. She informed me that I would have to prove that I had moved out of the gym contract area by providing her with either a utility bill or a lease. the first week of May I sent her a copy of my phone bill and a copy of my new bank statement and a copy of the court order showing I was no longer in my Philly apartment.

She informed me that because it was a Cell phone bill and not a Land line bill, I WOULD NOT BE LET OUT OF MY CONTRACT. I informed her that being I was now living with realities that already had phone service and utility service, I did not have a bill to provide to her. I would have thought that the cell phone bill and my new bank statement would have been enough proof to be let out of a contact. She was \unflinching, stating that at this point she would only accept a lease. The next day I had my relatives prepare and have me sign a lease, which I mailed the next day.

This was almost 3 months ago and I heard nothing. Just a week ago, I receive a piece of mail from the gym, dated 7/29/09 that lists a balance of 74.00 and a collection fee of 75.00

I find this absolutely criminal and ludicrous. What else does this woman need from me to let me pout of my contract? And why have I not received any bills for the past two months after I sent in a lease? I also find it curious that they have no problem sending me the bill to my new address, yet they don’t recognize this address as valid enough to let me out of my contract.

It is not like I used the gym and did not pay. I informed them months before I left and have given more proof that any court of law would need, yet Melissa refuses to let me out of the contract even though I have given her all the proof as stated in the contract.
