Weight-lifter of 14 years here, Rock Climbing IS A BLAST! The community at Ascend is so friendly and welcoming, I met many groups of people and genuinely worked together to figure out climbs. They make it easy to get started with climbs labeled by difficultly and really soft cushioning for when you fall. Ascend help me discover a new love, Thank you for inviting me!

I went there recently, everything was great! They change the holds weekly and the gym seemed really clean. After my experience I wanted to get a membership, but decided not to due to the pricing. I would say thatβs the only downside. However, if you have the money and you would go consistently, I would say itβs worth the price.

Ascend Point Breeze is such a welcoming and supportive community! There are tons of events to get involved in, and the yoga classes are amazing especially the acro yoga, which has been such a fun and empowering experience. The instructors are amazing, knowledgeable, and approachable. I also started bouldering here as a first-time climber, and the staff went above and beyond spending 30 minutes helping me understand climbing shoes and gear. The climbing facilities are great, and Iβve always felt encouraged no matter my skill level. Highly recommend for anyone looking to move their body, connect with others, and grow!

This facility is immaculate in every way.
First of all, the staff are incredible. Theyβre all knowledgeable and friendly and care about the area. They also make sure to establish and cultivate a sense of community within the gym as well.
Secondly, the facility itself is very clean and properly taken care of. They regularly schedule deep cleaning which as a regular guest is good to see.
Thirdly, there are options for anyone. Between the rock-climbing and fitness section, there is also various types of classes targeted for anyone.
Could not recommend this place enough. It really feels like a community and that everyone belongs there.

Iβve really enjoyed climbing here! Itβs been a great way to be more active and have fun, and Iβve gotten to have some cool conversations with people who have been climbing for some time. I took a belay class with Jon and he was an excellent teacher, very patient and conveyed the information well. I look forward to continuing to go here and get better at climbing to explore all the options they offer.

Ascend is a great gym for anyone looking to start rock climbing. The staff is super friendly and professional, and they always do a good job of keeping the facilities clean. They also have weekly group training classes that alternate between this location and the one in Southside. The coach who runs them, Mike, is super friendly and knowledgeable

Upon opening the doors you are greeted by a waft of pungent fermented foot odor. After acclimating to the smell it is not as bad. But the writing is on the floor.
The amenities in the gym itself is good. In fact they have the tallest walls in Pittsburgh. I used to be a member here but my tolerance for the lack of cleanliness is exhausted.
I observed the staff make attempts to remedy the cleanliness, however many of the fellow compatriots have no comprehension of hygiene.
I have been to many gyms in many different states and parts of the world that prohibit bare feet in the gym. This is not one of them.
Climbing is a crunchy sport but that does not mean hygiene goes out the window for a gym. Love it or leave it as they say.

Alright, listen up, you seasoned senders (or aspiring ones)! You've stumbled upon the definitive review of Ascend Point Breeze, and trust me, you can now close all those other review tabs cluttering your browser.
For the Seasoned Send-Meister:
Let's cut the chalk dust and get real. You're reading this because you are looking for a climbing gym that challenges you, not a glorified jungle gym for toddlers (though, they have that too, more on that later). Ascend delivers. They have all the climbing necessities, and then some: a legit warm-up zone (because pulling a muscle warming up is peak irony), a campus board, a Kilter Board for those techy sessions, a spray wall to unleash your inner beast, and even an adjustable training crack to perfect your finger jams. And let's not forget the bouldering area that'll have you questioning your life choices in the best possible way. Inverted crimps? Auto-belays? Top rope? Lead? Theyβve got it all, like a climbing buffet of awesomeness. Basically, if you crave it, you can climb it here.
For the Wide-Eyed Noob:
Fear not, young grasshopper! You wonβt be judged for falling (because trust me, you will). Everyone here has been a flailing newbie at some point. It's practically a rite of passage. Remember, if you're not falling, you're not growing. In all things, it's the struggles that make us stronger. All climbers understand this; no one is judging you when you land flat on your back, it's just part of the process. They've got a beginner-friendly developmental zone with shorter auto-belays, perfect for dipping your climbing shoes into the vertical world. And the "top-out boulder wall" for kids and families? It's basically a mini-adventure playground. You climb up, you conquer, you ladder down β instant hero status achieved. Now, let's address the elephant in the room: "I'm not in good enough shape." Hogwash! I've seen people of all ages, sizes, and shapes conquer routes that would make seasoned climbers tremble. Climbing is for everybody. Period.
The Vibe? It's Like a Cozy Mountain Lodge, But Vertical:
Forget those sterile, hospital-white gyms. Ascend has a chill, welcoming atmosphere. It's like climbing in a warm hug. They also throw awesome events β casual competitions, climbing clinics, you name it. It's a community, not just a workout spot. And the climbers? Super friendly. You'll find a belay buddy in no time, unless you're an introvert like me. In that case, just ditch the top rope tags, pop in your earbuds, and climb in your own little magical world.
Crowd Control and Membership Magic:
Want a lively, buzzing atmosphere? Go during peak hours. It's like a climbing party. They're even open lateβsome nights it almost has a club feel! Prefer a zen-like climbing experience? Hit them up first thing in the morning, at 6 AM. You'll practically have the whole place to yourself. And speaking of perks, become a member! Free guest passes? Yes, please! Introduce your friends and family to the glorious world of climbing and watch them become chalk-covered converts.
In Conclusion (Because You're Probably Tired of Reading By Now):
Ascend Point Breeze is the real deal. It's got something for everyone, from seasoned crushers to complete newbies. It's got a great vibe, a friendly community, and a ton of climbing options. So, ditch the excuses, grab your shoes (or rent some there), and go climb some walls. You won't regret it. Now go forth, and send it! (Or, you know, just have a good time. That works too.)

ASCEND is great! As my children started climbing at ASCEND, I was bringing them in. So, tried myself -- great decision. Have been enjoying it greatly ever since. Over time I have been to over a dozen climbing gyms both in US and abroad. This is one of the best gyms that I have seen. The facility is large and has lots of well-set routes both for beginner and intermediate climbers (can't comment about advanced, not one of them). The setting is varied, with a dedicated "U-wall" with its own grading system for weirder and compier boulders. The rope section is great as well -- it is big, well-lit by natural light and most importantly (unlike some other gyms I saw) the routes are wide, making it possible to set quite interesting moves. Last but not least, the staff at ASCEND are super helpful and friendly. I hope that the management continues to take good care of them, so that they remain such.

The gym is good. I had an issue when cancelling my family membership - I had to reach out several times to resolve it, which was a disappointment and a hassle. I wish it did not take multiple phone calls and emails, but the issue was eventually resolved (hence I updated my initial negative review).

Have climbed South Side, but was super impressed with Pt Breeze! Honestly thought I'd be disappointed in how few auto-belay stations there were, but the height really makes a difference (in a good way) and tires you out twice as fast! Very clean, very packed on a rainy day. Climbing so close to others was a bit nerve-wracking, but you get used to it. Can't wait to go back!

Recently, my friend was turned away from lead climb testing even though she had already taken a sport climbing class and been told she could test anytime no problem. The best climbing gym I've ever been to. They have an amazing team of problem setters who keep making new challenges frequently enough to never let you get bored, even if you go very regularly. I have been going to Ascend Point Breeze since their opening day, and to the South Side location before that. It is always a fun experience and the people (staff and fellow climbers) are very supportive and cheerful. The top roping facility at Point Breeze is exceptional, and there is always a large options for bouldering problems as well.

One of my all time favorite climbing gyms! The facility is kept very tidy. I love the range/style of music played. Keeps it fresh! The space feels welcoming. The walls have a great mixture of beginner to very challenging. Far beyond my level. I donβt boulder so I cannot speak on that but it looks very nicely set up.
The selection of gear is decent. I would like to see a wider selection of shoes. Preferably in my size lol. But Iβve bought most of my climbing gear here and the prices are roughly the same as online. I donβt mind paying a little extra.im a firm believer in SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL BUSINESS!!
The staff is wonderful. Iβve had the pleasure of learning from Mike, Coleman, Jared, Marston and many others. From top rope, and auto belays, to lead climbing and outdoor anchor building. Top notch instruction. Never once felt unsafe or belittled for being new. They took the time to make sure you understood everything taught thoroughly. Greeted many times by Delaney (hopefully that is spelled right) and there is always a smile and positive attitude.
For these reasons I became a member and will stay a member.

Great experience as a first timer. My friend had a membership and I
You get to bring someone for free if it's their first time which is great because I loved it. The staff was incredibly friendly and very helpful showing us safety tips and features of the facilities. They bouldering and ropes as well as self climbing so you don't need someone to go with you! It was a great work out. They rent shoes, chalk, and harnesses. They have a gym area with equipment and a co-working space with a fridge, microwave, sink, and toaster oven. I highly recommend coming here it was a great time with a group or individually!

Genuinely such a great time climbing here and they stay open later than most gyms I've been to across the country. That's such a huge bonus! The setting is pretty fantastic, the variety makes for a great day of climbing!

Corporate gym that is grubbing up money at the expense of local climbers while catering to out of state comps and providing less and less access for locals. Simply put, the ASCEND gyms are a dream come true for climbers both new and experienced! I've been climbing at ASCEND Point Breeze since it opened, before that I climbed at ASCEND Southside for a year, and I've also made my way out to ASCEND Youngstown a handful of times. From my first climb, I was hooked! The key to ASCEND's success is their passionate staff who clearly care about their mission. The facilities are impeccable and the route setting is top-notch! Their classes are wonderful as well --- I've taken their Boulder Basics, Climbing 101, and Sport Climbing 1 courses, and attended a bunch of Functional Fitness classes too.
As I prepare to move from Pittsburgh to the California Bay Area, I fear I won't find such wonderful gyms out there --- ASCEND has set the bar too high!
Special thanks to Etai, Manny, and DJ. Your mentorship and friendship made ASCEND feel like home!

**SLACK LINE IS RIGHT AGAINST A BRICK WALL AND A STEEL PIPE AND ACTS LIKE A SLINGSHOT**
Be very cautious! Yesterday my sister was slingshotted into the wall and hit her head badly. We told the guys working the desk they should move the slack line further away from the wall or put padding on brick wall. I was not impressed with their response at all, which was "Well, it's only happened a few times, and it's been about a year." Very unprofessional response to admit that people have hit this wall multiple times and they have done nothing about it.
Bad customer service and ASCEND should improve the safety of their facility regardless of their lack of liability.

This gym is so dirty, sweaty bare-feet everywhere, there are literally stains of dirty sweaty feet everywhere, the smell and dirtiness of this gym makes it so hard to enjoy climbingβ¦seriously the moment you open the door to get in, the disgusting marinated feet smell goes through your nose and throatβ¦please stop allowing bare-feet, itβs not rocket science.. just donβt allow bare-feet so felts donβt get soaked and fermented with all kinda feet sweat. I have seen other gyms in Chicago and Toronto that donβt allow bare-feet and it makes a huge difference...if it wasnβt for the smell and sweaty feet stains I would have given 4 stars.

Iβd like to take this time to mention two great instructors. One was a yoga instructor I think her name is Lauren. She was kind and helpful. UPDATE 12/23: They now offer discounted day passed that are more reflective of climber age/attention span. Thank you!
We really love this gym, lots of amenities and friendly staff. My only concern is itβs not very affordable to introduce children, as my toddler who LOVES to climb but will only entertain on the wall for maybe 10 minutes has to pay the same rate as college students. I would love to see more gyms get invested in youth in sustainable ways. Itβs a shame we canβt introduce her to the sport without breaking the bank. I guess we will have to wait several years until sheβs old enough for the youth programsβ¦

So, I was party to an unfortunate misunderstanding, which resulted in me wanting to cancel my membership. When I called to escalate my concern, I had the good fortune to speak with Bri Black.
Bri, listened attentively while I vented. She demonstrated empathy and made me feel as though my membership was valued. Ultimately, Bri salvaged a membership from an insanely loyal, potentially long-term client.
The facility is top-notch, offering fitness classes, yoga, and a wide assortment of walls, route choices, and apparatus. Bri conducted a detailed introductory walk-through and safety briefing on my first actual visit. Now Iβm very excited to grow my skills indoors, while I prepare for outdoor climbing!

So thrilled with the increased top-rope options the point breeze location adds! The bouldering and top rope routes are great and change to keep things interesting. The staff maintains everything well. This place is great!

Awesome new location for climbing. We focused on bouldering for this trip and there was so much to choose from. My 5 year old, 8 year, beginner adult (myself) and more advanced adult (spouse) all had a great time with tons of climbs to meet us where we're at with climbing. The facility was safe, clean and friendly.

Decent gym, mostly because they are the only rope gym in town, but there are better bouldering options.
The setting here is surprisingly infrequent. Lately it's been about one small section per month.

came to get my top rope cert, paid for my harness and the lady told me to warm up and practice then come get one of them when i was ready. practiced everything real quick and came back THEN they told me im not allowed to practice and i have to come in cold. felt like a waste of money. if you are gonna have policyβs make sure your whole staff knows them and explains them before people waste their money here.

Awesome place.
I went to the wrong side of the building first which looked like the gym had gone out of business.

Great rock climbing gym focus with additional workout equipment and yoga for augmenting any training off the holds.
The walls are steadily updated with new routes every few weeks for finding new projects. Mostly a tall wall climber but never bored with new routes or ways to complete them even if I catch them between setting.
I haven't attended any other events but they also do excursions to outdoor areas for getting people introduced into that sort of thing.
Overall, highly recommend. Looking forward to their expanding facilities too for some friends out in Erie area.

I go to this climbing gym all the time. The staff are lovely, and the gym sets new boulders frequently. I also went on a private guided trip to Breakneck with DJ and had a wonderful time. He taught me everything I needed to know to do outdoor sport climbing. Overall, great experience and great gym.

Such a great gym. Always have good climbs here and the employees are extremely friendly and helpful. Specifically recommend DJ, as I took the lead class with him and he was super knowledgeable and encouraging. Canβt recommend Ascend enough to Pittsburgh climbers

Pt breeze goes above and beyond to kindle a positive and welcoming space. One thing which has stood out to me is the organizationβs commitment to inviting feedback and then actively integrating it. From bus schedules, to inclusive comps, to the chili pepper rating system to stashing the rescue bag near the lead wall. Keep it up and never have I been more pumped and proud to call a climbing gym my place to refuel. Thanks!!

This review is about the fitness and yoga classes. To start, I love going to Aaron Fishkin's Functional Fitness class. He's an amazing instructor who has gained quite a following since I've started. It's great to see some of the same regulars along with a few new ones each week. He creates a very inviting class to all levels. When I started in early 2023, I previously didn't have much confidence to attend fitness classes like this. But after one session, Aaron got to know my name and was very helpful with all of the exercises I was having trouble with. I used to go twice a week when he was able to teach on Mondays. I'd definitely take another class from him if he offered a second class again.
As for yoga classes, I started going to Taylor Soloman's Yin yoga class awhile back. Also, not one to go to yoga, she gave me a nice introduction to feel comfortable in this space. I always feel completely relaxed after leaving her class. It's such a great way to unwind at the end of a Tuesday. I always enjoy chatting with Taylor after the yoga session. Taylor is awesome!
Sarah Hall who teaches Slow + Steady at Southside is also amazing. She includes a great good core workout every week. I started getting more comfortable with basic yoga moves at her classes. I wouldn't say it's the most intense workout, but it may be slightly more intense than the name leads on. I enjoy how she often adds a little more challenging aspect at the end of class, walking us through how to do some more advanced moves. Highly recommend Sarah!
Lastly, I just started going to Bari Kramer's Tuesday yoga class. Bari is also amazing. I find this the most challenging yoga class as it's a pretty intense workout. She's very active in guiding us through a fast paced session. For me, I leave this class feeling about as exhausted as going to Aaron's Functional Fitness class. Such a refreshing workout. Thanks Bari!

Loved our time at this climbing gym. We were visiting Pittsburgh and wanted to check out the gyms in the area and came across the Ascend ones. There are several beginner friendly climbs here, this was a big plus for me as somebody who is just starting out. There were also multiple circuits that we could train on starting from the kids warm up section to the bouldering and competition walls. All in all lot of variety to work with.
They also have a really cool yoga and weights section which I would love to check out next time. The tour by one of the staff members at the beginning helped us get acquainted with the gym and get more of our time here, so the tour was a big bonus. Overall, my husband and I really like this gym and look forward to coming back whenever we are in Pittsburgh.

This is a top-tier climbing gym. Having been to a half dozen other gyms in Pittsburgh, Seattle, Lancaster, and other places this one stands out as the best. There is a huge range of difficulty and style for top rope, bouldering, and lead climbing. Their staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and safety-conscious, and they provide useful feedback and accessible instruction/classes for getting certified. They even have power racks, barbells, and a full set of kettle bells (up to 70lb!) in addition to cardio equipment. The memberships are reasonably priced and competitive for what they offer. Their top-rope route variety has been improving since they opened, as has their grading, both of which I think have slight room for improvement. Parking is great, climate control is great, environment is friendly, thereβs really no better place to spend a Thursday evening.
