Heavy Metal is an amazing place. I love having a little community of oddballs all pushing ourselves and pushing each other to get stronger. A really welcoming gym environment, and there's always plenty of fun to be had while picking things up and putting them down. Zach is a fantastic coach and helped me to get stronger and stay injury-free!

Signed up for the intro to barbell lifting class on a bit of a short notice whim after seeing a reddit post mention the gym (didn't even know it was there). Zach is extremely welcoming and a great coach; he gives really good cues and explanations of how to to do the movements. I also appreciate how positive and friendly the other people in the gym are. I'm skeptical of apps, but the app makes it very easy to schedule classes compared to some other gym apps I've seen.

A few notes on the gym:

1) it's a specialized gym and the equipment reflects that. Still, Zach has a range of equipment for everyone, and there is something for you, even if you are just getting started on strength training.

2) it's a small gym, however it feels like there is everything that's needed, and Zach has been expanding the equipment over time. The layout is good, as I've been in there with quite a few other people and everyone had space for what they were doing. On the other hand, a positive aspect of the size is that you get more individualized attention from Zach in classes!

3) it's a converted garage. This means there is no AC (but big industrial fans) and no water fountain (but a sink and Zach usually has some water around). I recommend bringing your own water bottle and a gym towel, especially in the summer. There are also strong florescent lights up, but Zach covered them to make it less hard on the eyes, which I really appreciate. While there are no lockers, there is a coat rack and some shelves where you can drop your things, and a small bathroom.

4) it's an owner-run gym. This means occasionally the gym is closed for a few days if Zach is competing somewhere (or I imagine if he got very sick or something like that), but it doesn't seem like a major consideration or concern for me.

Zach and the Heavy Metal Strength Training team are absolutely incredible. They really take the time to listen to your unique training goals and create a workout plan that’s tailored just for you. On top of that, they provide an inclusive, supportive gym environment where everyone feels welcome and empowered. I can’t recommend them enough!

Zach has coached me for nearly two years, providing individualized programming for strength and strongman training. The lifts and accessory work have improved my bench, squat, deadlift, and all the strongman events. He provides consistent feedback and cues to gain strength and learn technique safely and effectively.

I train with Zach online since the commute doesn’t work for me. He provides an individual plan for me that is updated every week which includes training videos. He also holds me accountable. Great for those who can’t regularly soak up the dynamic energy in this South Philly location

Amazing gym with an incredible atmosphere! Coach Zack patiently explained the fundamentals of powerlifting, breaking down techniques in a way that was easy to understand and super helpful for a beginner like me. His guidance is exactly what I need to succeed in my fitness journey. The energy in the gym is unmatched, and the equipment and setup are perfect for serious training. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to improve their strength and technique!
