Joined the club having never laced up gloves in my life, in spite of being a life long boxing fan.
I'm 6 weeks into my journey and can't wait to get to the gym each day.
Coach Bob not only teaches the science of each punch, but teaches the overall strategy of certain maneuvers and what they try to achieve. The strategic elements of the sport are fascinating and bobs deep knowledge of it are a pleasure to learn. My fellow students are friendly and welcoming whilst being serious and committed. this makes for a great learning environment.
Every journey starts with a single step, so if your like me and always dreamed about it, now is the day to join the club and begin your journey.
Do it now.

If your looking to get in killer shape and learn a fundamental life skill at the same time then check out PMAABA. Everyone in any boxing gym had to walk in one day as a total novice. Make your day today. All skill levels welcome. Your friends will be impressed when you show them how you can place your foot perfectly in their ear. Coach Bob be the man. Great gym.

Bobβs gym is old-school, in the best of ways! Bob will teach you professional, competitive boxing and kickboxing techniques, not like the gyms that merely use heavy bags and gloves as props for a workout. The gym is not fancy, and thatβs why most of us who come here love it. Itβs authentic, well-equipped with the real stuff, and most importantly a coach who knows what heβs doing! You will feel welcome here if you want to work hard, whether to learn the basics for fitness or actually train to fight. The members form an incredibly diverse and friendly community, from every part of the city, profession, race, and age (above 13). Donβt just think about it, join!
During COVID-19, Bob put together a rigorous 28-day at-home challenge for members, and made it available to non-members too at a super reasonable rate. The routines sent to us each day were an incredible workout, with some healthy points-based competition thrown in for added motivation. Bob inspired us and coached us through the challenge remotely, just like he does at the gym. Thank you, Bob!!

Thanks to Coach Bob for doing the 28 Day #pghboxingathome challenge. Each day you provided us with a great working to stay fit and sharpen our skills drills with drills.
I really enjoyed it but can't wait to get back in the gym.
I have been attending Coach Bob's gym for a little over a year now. I have had the desire to find a boxing gym for several years in the Norwin area that could accommodate my work schedule and I have been extremely happy with the gym.
Bob has taught me everything since I went in with little actual knowledge of boxing. He teaches everyone starting at the basics to build a solid foundation for all their boxing skills. The classes are great for getting in shape and learning true boxing skills each week. The skills and drills Bob teaches has prepared me to spare and get in the best shape of my life since being a college student-athlete.
My favorite part about the gym is the people. Everyone I have met has been extremely nice and welcoming. I am so happy I found this gym and know I have also found some great friends.

If your looking for a great workout and to learn how to box, this is the place; I love the smaller class size; Coach Bob is the best; Coach will adjust the drills/workout based on individual skill level; Coach also switches up the drills/workouts so there is no chance of ever getting bored!!!!! I actually look forward to getting up early to workout here!!!

I love this gym. I started here after trying βanother placeβ. Coach Bob was welcoming and extremely patient with his teaching. He is encouraging and made me feel welcome and confident. All the members are great. Coach Bob is always trying to make sure we all have everything we need for classes, class times and promotes all the members to do their best. π₯

As a female looking to be taken seriously at a boxing gym, I''ll admit I was a little stressed and hesitant, especially given past experiences. I've been to gyms where the guys are arrogant and out to prove their dominance, where other females are so intimidated that it's unwelcoming and where the instructor or coach is unwilling to listen to your goals and take you seriously. I've been at Pittsburgh Martial Arts & Boxing Academy for over a year now and not only my views of gyms but my boxing skills have changed. This gym is a great place to learn with classes filled with people who care to train and care about each other. I never saw myself sparring with guys, taking shots and giving them AND I never thought I'd take my boxing skills even further and start kickboxing. I feel like I could say so much more about how awesome my gym is, but I'll leave it here: If you want to learn to box (FOR REAL, not "i love kickboxing"), build dependable relationships, set goals and crush them, then I'll see you there.

Learning how to box at Coach Bob's gym has been a great experience. The atmosphere is professional and relaxed. Members are focused, friendly, and helpful. Bob is very knowledgeable and knows how to coach people at all experience levels. There are no gimmicks, just a dedication to learning the art of boxing. If you are looking for a way to get into excellent shape and learn a useful skill, then I highly recommend training with Coach Bob.

If you are willing to work hard, listen and really push yourself, this is the place for you. Coach Bob is so knowledgeable and is willing to teach anyone who really wants to learn a skill. I have worked out at many locations and to be 100% honest this place may not be the prettiest, but the caliber of coaching and teaching that goes on are world class! Not too mention the group that trains here are all awesome people! Best shape of my life, thanks coach Bob!

I didn't know the first thing about boxing/fighting before coming to this gym. Over time I was able to start fighting. Eventually I became a world-ranked amateur kick boxer under Coach Bob at this gym. The people are all very friendly and the coach will teach you how to fight, or just get in shape. I'd recommend this gym to anyone. It's a great time and you'll learn a thing or two.

I was nervous at first about going to a martial arts gym because I had no idea what I was doing! I got to watch a class before I started and saw that everyone was really engaged and focused on what they were doing. Bob worked with everyone throughout the training and gave pointers on improving technique and form.
I soon started and damn, every muscle in my body got worked! Going to his martial arts class taught me more discipline and improved my confidence. I saw muscle build as I felt like my butt got kicked after every session! Bob is able to teach you whatever you need including weapons self defense, training for fights, or just training to get in shape. I like the variety of heavy bags and free weights to train on. I will def continue to train with him and recommend him to my friends or anyone interested in really learning martial arts.

Not great. I've trained in a garage that had been repurposed into a boxing gym before. That's what they're going for here, but the place has fallen into disrepair. I was doing leg raises and my hand was brushing against a table saw that was tossed on the concrete floor, the admin/desk area was so full of garbage and boxes that no one could actually use it. When I was doing jump rope, my rope hit a mop bucket that was out on the floor.
The folks who where there training were nice, all introduced themselves, very positive and the banter while training was good despite the environment, but I got a very distinctive feeling like every class is more or less the same: 3 rounds jump rope, 3 rounds shadow boxing, 3 rounds various drills, 3 rounds of cardio. A) I don't need to pay $100 a month to do most of that and B) the coach was very hands off. Just kind of sat there. I got a few pointers from him, but again, my last trainer was very engaged, making on-the-fly changes to my form, stance, changing up the pace of the workout, etc. If someone doesn't know how to box at ALL, you're not going to learn here.

I've been training under Bob Barnum since 2008. You will not find a more complete system of combatives in the Pittsburgh area. This gym has something for everyone.
If you want to learn how to protect yourself, American Freestyle covers all of those bases including gun and knives. The Freestyle classes are intense and self defense oriented which constantly throw new challenges at you, making you rely on the training to work your way through it.
If you just want a fun way to get in shape, the boxing and kickboxing classes has you covered. Coach Bob will shoot straight with you, no bullshit. I can't recommend this gym enough!
