Went to this PF for the first time in about 8 years. I live on the other side of town now but decided to go there the other night. They actually have power racks so you can squat bench and deadlift for real. They also got rid of the lunk alarm. If I didn't live so far away this could be my main gym as I am a competitive powerlifter and only go to PF certain body parts indoor accessories.
Also the place is open 24/7 not like the PFs near me that close early Friday Saturday and Sunday.

Unbelievable! They have four power racks with no mirrors in front of them! I have never been to a gym that didn't have mirrors in front of their power racks. How are you supposed to squat using correct form with no mirror? Someone's going to get hurt!!!!

Update Review of Planet Fitness (Penn Hills Location) - July 16, 2025.

Part 1 – Great Facility (5-star), Poorly Managed (1-star) Planet Fitness has come a long way from the days of the "Lunk Alarm." The renovations at the Penn Hills location are impressive—especially for those who take strength training seriously. The new layout includes plate-loaded equipment, upgraded flooring, and a more serious lifting environment. This location is fastly becoming the model for future PFs. If I were rating the gym’s physical upgrades and overall concept, this would easily be a 5-star review.

Part 2 – Misguided Management and Policy Overreach

Unfortunately, what brings this review down is the conduct of Marcuse, a manager at this location, who has taken it upon himself to enforce rules not backed by the official Planet Fitness membership agreement or even PF’s own online policy.

Marcuse confronted me about bringing an equipment bag onto the gym floor—despite the fact that Planet Fitness policy only prohibits bags “not in use,” and the membership contract makes no mention of a ban at all. My bag contained essential workout gear, not prohibited items, and I’ve used it many times without issue—until now.

Even more concerning is that Marcuse is photographing PF Black Card members' guests. This is not stated anywhere in the contract, and according to the Pennsylvania Health Club Act (73 P.S. § 2161 et seq.), health clubs are prohibited from imposing additional conditions that are not disclosed in the membership agreement. Taking and storing guest photos without written consent may also raise privacy violations under state law.

In short, while the gym is great, Marcuse’s overreach and selective enforcement of unofficial rules not only creates a hostile environment but may also be opening the door to legal consequences. Planet Fitness Corporate needs to take a serious look at how this location is being managed before it damages the brand’s reputation for being inclusive, fair, and Judgement Free.

The staff particularly Maurice is extremely rude. I have been going to the location for years and have not once had an issue until Maurice. I took a 30 minute drive and upon arrival was told I could not work out due to my shoes although they were closed toe and also had a strap in the back. He has seen me several times with these exact shoes and has not once said anything before. I explained how far of a drive I took and explained he has seen me come to this location every day for an extensive period of time and not once has informed me about this matter before. He threatened to cancel my membership as if I have not been a paying customer for years. I do not recommend the staff nor the location!

I drove 23 miles to this location, expecting to get a workout while I was out of town. However, upon arrival, I found that the facility is still under construction—no signage indicating that it will be a Planet Fitness, just the familiar brand colors. Nowhere online or on maps did it mention that this location is not yet open, which led to a frustrating waste of time.

If the owners care about potential customers—especially those traveling and looking for a dependable workout spot—they should make an effort to clearly communicate the location’s status. A simple update online stating that the facility is "under construction" or "coming soon" would save out-of-town visitors from unnecessary inconvenience.

Because of this lack of transparency, I wasn’t able to work out today, nor do I have time to drive to another location before heading to work. I hope Planet Fitness improves its communication in the future to prevent this issue for other travelers.

Okay so I have to tell you I just love this place I was always a little weary about joining a gym but to tell you the truth here folks I was in a wheelchair for 5 months my doctor finally said I could ditch the wheelchair and walk and so I joined Planet Fitness I love it I love it I love it I love it I love it I love the massage chairs I love the total enhancement booth I love the tanning beds Hydro beds I love the whole place and the people that work there are so sweet and so nice me see I remember Wendy and I can't remember the young man's name in Penn Hills PA but they are so nice like oh my God I love it no judgement

I’ve never been to this location, I was traveling and wanted to take a shower here since it was on the route to my destination. And I was extremely dissatisfied with the shower situation. After I was completely stripped down, I turn on the shower and discover the shower head is broken and water started spewing everywhere. There was a part missing which created a hole and caused the water to go everywhere. I was unable to take a shower due to this issue. (It’s the one in the handicap stall). Also there is no privacy, if I breathed a little too hard the shower curtain opened.. exposing me, and because they are visible to the locker room … there’s a risk of people getting an unwarranted accidental peep show from me. Out of all the Planet Fitness locations I’ve been to this has the worst shower area.

Since when is this gym not 24hr!? I just arrived at 7:02pm on a Saturday and they're closed. As someone who often works the night shift, this is really disappointing. I used to be able to come all hours of the night and it was one of the reasons I utilized this gym!

The staff, including management, is extremely friendly, personable and respectful. They are willing to answer any questions that you may have and go above and beyond to keep the facility clean, sanitized and well maintained. The environment is top notch for welcoming new members beginning their fitness journey. The machines are well spaced, giving you the freedom of working out by yourself without too much chaos. This used to be a great gym but lately there’s been a serious decline in professionalism from the people that work there. If they aren’t on their phones, they’re in the break room, and if they are not in the break room, they are goofing off around the gym.

There are three folks there who are absolutely fantastic and busting their butts while their coworkers slack off. They are friendly, they’re making sure the gym is in a good place, and then you’ve got folks working like this one today.

Couldn’t even use stability ball because she was too busy using them as chairs and an arm rest, hanging in the back with her friends, dropping the N-word left and right.

I go there to work out and I’d like to enjoy it. You need to have a manager on site more often.

Matter of fact…. I don’t know if I’ve ever even seen a manager. I’d love to show them the picture of this employee today.

I go to different gyms in the area and most people say they only keep planet fitness because of the hours and since the change I've spoken with several members who say their searching for a 24 hr gym so their going to lose members because there trying to save a few dollars. Best gym locally. Clean, friendly, great ventilation. The dark purple interior lowers my stress levels. The only drawback (and it’s not the gym), is the number of guys (it’s exclusively guys) who camp on some of the machines like they have all the time in the world to check their cell phones between reps. There should be timers on some of the machines or an ejector seat. Either one would be very useful for the rest of us.

I've been going here since at least late 2020, and it's steadily and continuously gone down hill. I've posted about issues on here and on the surveys PF sends out, and nothing is changing (except for the worse). The men's showers are never clean - old bottles of shampoo/body wash will sit in them for days, and the floors in there are disgusting. People are regularly talking on their phones throughout the gym - including in the locker room - despite signs everywhere telling folks to use the lobby or seating area. I even saw someone doing a video call in the men's room a while back!
The only positive I can think of are the new machines. Yet even those have been a let down, since they removed the ab circuit room. Granted, people were ignoring the signage about how to use that properly, too. All in all, this is not a good place to get a work-out; you'll be yelled at for working out too hard, by staff who aren't doing anything about the things PF claims to stand for (per the signs throughout the gym). For almost 4 years I've been waiting and hoping things would get better, but it's time to throw in the towel and find a new gym.

Decent place to workout at, if you don't mind a dirty gym, not all but some of the younger generation just want stay on their phones and not do what they were hired for. No paper towels or cleaning fluid in machine equipment dirty and weights out in aisle too be tripped over plus you can wear street clothes and nobody says anything. A lot to be desired!

I had to freeze my account for medical reasons for 90 days. I was told that my monthly payments would freeze except my annual membership fee which I agreed to and understand. I was told fro. Their staff that NOTHING would come out my bank until September. I awoke today to find a charge on my bank account putting my account in the negative as I am on a tight budget and I plan for every payment. I have called the branch, the billing department and the corporation just to be told that my account would be refunded in 8 to 10 days. Everyone knows after so many days the bank charges you more. Mind you I never had an overdraft or any other issue with Planet Fitness until today. The manager (Jake) was not polite at all. I said if you cant fix this then cancel my accounts on which he replied I already canceled them. 8 then asked would you allow someone to mess over your bank account he replied we are not talking about me we are talking about you. Now I am waiting to hear from the owners...I am changing my review because I went in and spoke with Jake whom since Ive been going there has always been helpful. After we discussed the problem and after discussing and seeing that there was a misunderstanding I will be returning to Planet Fitness as soon as my Doctor clears me. They need to step their customer service game up. I walked in last week and enquired about a temporary pass. I'm visiting from abroad and just wanted to go to the gym for a week. Apparently this isn't possible because you need an American bank routing number or so I was told. In Europe we use IBAN. The young kid (Dylon?) who attended me was aloof and borderline rude. I don't expect a young American kid to know the difference between a routing number and IBAN, but I do expect general kind service, not staring off into the distance and literally walking around directionless while I ask a few questions. The other guy working with him (tall black kid) was cool.

I call this Planet Fitness Atlanta 😄. The gym crowd is made up mostly of people of color which gives the gym a different a vibe than all the other Planet Fitness's in western Pennsylvania. Very respectful, upbeat crowd with good energy.

Clean gym and friendly staff that acknowledges you as you come and go. Gym is busy all hours of the day but it's so large that it doesn't feel crowded. Gym is open 24/7 which is a major plus!
