About the Club

Yoga studio featuring morning Mysore, Ashtanga classes, YogaLab, Restorative Yoga, Gentle Yoga and Yoga workshops.

Ashtanga yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a set series of postures in a vinyasa (“flow”) style. Classes are taught in traditional Mysore style and in a teacher guided, led class format. Through breath and vinyasa, internal heat is produced, leading to cleansing, improved circulation, and allowing the body to become healthy, light, and strong.
Other yoga classes include Rest and Renew with slow, mindful movement, YogaLab with self-massage techniques using Yoga Therapy Balls, Gentle Yoga with simple movements and Restorative yoga with supportive, long rest designed to restore.

After moving from Toronto to Pittsburgh, I was initially disappointed by the state of yoga instruction in the city. I'm grateful for have found the Shala. The teaching team is the best in the city, and the space is bright and clean. It's never too crowded and there are plenty of props and tea included.

I am new to the Shala and have had such a great experience so far! I initially took Becky’s Introduction to Ashtanga series in the spring, and have been attending Sam’s Mysore classes on Mon/Wed evenings. Both Becky and Sam are such knowledgeable and welcoming teachers. The shala is clean and spacious and lovely to practice in. I can already tell I am getting stronger and more flexible since I started. I highly recommend this ashtanga shala. Don’t be intimidated if you are new! They will guide you at your own pace.

I flew into Pittsburgh for a 3-Day Ashtanga Workshop and it was worth flew cross country for this shala. The space is clean, the owner is so attentive and sweet, the teachers are so knowledgeable and kind. I will definitely be coming back out here for another workshop. If you live in the area, take advantage of the classes they offer.

If you’re looking to start or continue a yoga practice as well as better understand how your body moves, I highly recommend this studio. Every teacher is incredibly knowledgable, supportive, and understands how to adapt the practice to meet each student’s needs. There is also a very welcoming community and you will likely become friends with the people you practice next to! A very loving community and a beautiful space to practice.

Excellent workshop! I attended Friday night. Marque was very knowledgeable, he demonstrated and communicated the techniques and drills for floats and handstands explicitly, making achieving them possible with practice!

The Marathon massage workshop today given by Lesile Wright was incredible! Lesile's teaching and her knowledge of the human body is amazing. The way she invites you to explore and experience the mechanics of your body is empowering!! I always leave her classes more spacious in my own skin.... 🙏 Thank you

This is the ONLY Ashtanga Yoga studio in the Pittsburgh area. I love all the teachers. This studio's offerings not only include traditional ashtanga classes but different types of classes for 'EVERY BODY'. They also offer a number of different workshops/series. If you are looking for strength, flexibility and calm. This is the stop to make!

Can't recommend the Shala enough! The physical space is clean, bright and calming, and the community is welcoming. I've been practicing ashtanga with Becky, the owner, for more than 10 years and it has changed my life. No more neck/shoulder/wrist pain is just the beginning. Becky's approach to ashtanga starts with curiosity and self-compassion. She focuses on the actions and not the results, but always makes it challenging enough to keep you interested, no matter how strong/flexible you are (or aren't). Working through difficult postures on the mat has made me more compassionate, patient and calm off the mat. I highly recommend this studio.

No better place to learn, grow or hone your yoga than the Shala!

The teachers at the Shala are well-versed in Ashtanga, as well as other styles, including Iyengar, and have many years of experience and learning with some of the best. They support one's Ashtanga journey without being pedantic, providing support for the individual need and body. Sometimes the verbal adjustments are more profound than the physical as they help you explore, understand and flourish in your body, mind and practice.

I have been working with Becky for many years, and she is so supportive and insightful, she often leads me to what I need.

The Shala also offers zoom sessions. As I have moved out of town, I love the flexibility of this option, and Becky and the other teachers are able to be attentive and provide insight and support remotely. Of course, when I am in town, I plan my trips around in person Mysore classes.

The Shala of Pittsburgh space is a super clean and absolutely beautiful space. Ashtanga yoga may be intimidating to people who have not previously practiced it, but I don't feel that at all at the Shala.

The teachers care more about the people than being able to get all the poses perfectly before moving on. They allow the students to work on their own personal journeys and practices. They work to develop relationships and care deeply about the students. This practice can help with many areas of our lives. I've been doing it since 2013. I truly believe the owner Becky cares more about allowing the practice to change our lives than making money. I feel compassion, love, acceptance, patience, and no judgment. I'm able to have fun and laugh at myself. I cannot do all the poses I used to be able to but I've learned to accept this and personalize my practice. Some days are hard, but it's more about getting on the mat than taking a picture of a beautiful pose to post on social media. It is a life changing practice that has helped my strength, flexibility, athletic performance, perseverance, emotional and mental health, and spiritual life. The breath is a key component as well as sweating out impurities. The practice is challenging at times but it helps to do it over and over again. Practice and all is coming. Don't let fear keep you away.

I finally found what I've been looking for: a challenging yet inclusive physical practice, dedicated knowledgeable teachers, a loving community & the chance to be a student of a tradition that can take me as deep as I want to go. Can't give it enough stars.
