Urban Athlete is more of a fitness community of like-minded people than a typical gym. Classes are different everyday and you are guaranteed to have every part of your body worked out, with special emphasis on core and shoulders.

The best work-out place in NW Philly! Small group classes, highly skilled and attentive instructors, a really friendly, supportive community vibe in each class, and a varied workout that changes each day and builds strength and endurance. They have the options for personal training, IsoPhit (which is intense and great), plus virtual participation in classes. Can't speak highly enough of this place. Definitely a hidden gem among all the other bigger outfits. Worth checking out if you're looking to improve conditioning, fitness and strength in a friendly, supportive - and fun even during hard workouts! - environment.

I recently moved to the neighborhood and I’m so glad this gym is close by. It’s exactly what I needed: plenty of classes, knowledgeable coaches who explain everything clearly and offer low-stress guidance on form, and a genuinely supportive vibe. Nothing feels overly intense or high-pressure, yet you can push as hard as you want at your own level. It’s perfect for functional health at any age. The community is open and welcoming without the fitness-cult vibe. You know it’s a special gym when you see people of all ages and goals showing up consistently. The coaches are skilled enough to accommodate different abilities in the same class while keeping it fun and challenging for everyone.

Absolutely love this gym. Been a member for over 2 years and go 1-3x/wk. I'm close 50 and am very active - soccer, tennis, snowboarding, half marathons, etc. UA keeps me strong and mobile which prevents injury,
keeps me from getting achey, and improves my performance substantially. It's a wonderful community - you come as you are and are warmly welcomed. Since the workouts are full body, functional movements where you choose your own weights, it allows for a wide range of people to benefit from the same class. Sometimes I just don't want to get out of bed but knowing my classmates and the supportive, knowledgeable trainers will be there motivates me to get in the door, which is more than half the battle.

Exercise is one thing you can do for yourself that will improve your physical and mental health. Urban Athlete (UA) is unique gym because it brings people of all fitness levels together to help them meet their goals to be fitter, age and live longer, and excel performance-wise or recover from injury. Last year I had my hip replaced and was working out a month later since I had been training with UA. Fitness aside, this is a welcoming place for everyone. You owe it to yourself to commit to a 45-minute WOD (workout of the day) to be the best version of yourself!

I am extremely happy to have joined this gym. The coaching staff is very personal and gets to know you and your individual goals. I used to do CrossFit and remember dreading the workouts. The classes here are perfectly balanced. I always leave sore (in a good way) and it’s never so overwhelming that I fear coming in the next day.

Any place that helps me with my "adulting" is truly a great place! UA provides a safe community where you can strive to either achieve and/or maintain functional health that directly translates to every day life. IYKYK: Mel loved this place too...

Urban Athlete has been great!

I am 62 years old and joined the gym about 8 months ago, after retiring from practicing law.

I initially worried that the workouts would be geared to younger and fitter people and/or that the "vibe" would be "muscle head/gym rat."

My worries were misplaced. The workouts scale perfectly to each person's capabilities and the "vibe" is terrific (open, friendly, welcoming, etc.).

The instructors (Ryan and Greg) are outstanding. I habitually attend three sessions a week (7am) and have never felt better!

I highly recommend Urban Athlete, no matter of your age or current level of fitness.

Pamela and her team have created such a special place. It so remarkable that such a diverse group of people come together in this temple of good health, humor and with a feeling of community. There is zero vanity, the space reaks of total authenticity, it is rare to find such a space.

Gosh I show up all clumsy and uncoordinated, quite clueless generally… but there is absolutely no judgement, only patience and support. What a gift for the community!

Urban Athlete is truly a standout gym for anyone serious about building strength, endurance, and overall fitness. From the moment you walk in, you can feel the energy — supportive, motivating, and geared toward helping you reach your best potential.

The coaches are knowledgeable, encouraging, and they really pay attention to form and technique, which makes every workout safe and effective. Whether you’re lifting heavy, pushing through endurance sets, or dialing in your mobility, they meet you where you are and help you level up.

The community at Urban Athlete is just as impressive as the workouts. It’s welcoming, inspiring, and filled with people who are genuinely rooting for each other. No ego, just a lot of hard work and good vibes.

If you’re looking for a gym that will challenge you, support you, and make you stronger in every way, Urban Athlete is it. I can’t recommend it enough!

I absolutely LOVE this place. Great community of neighborhood people. All the coaches are knowledgeable and caring in the way they teach the classes and make accommodations/adjustments for anyone that needs them. Classes are always on-time and the workouts are continually varying in focus; strength, mobility, cardio, high intensity. etc. In my 6 years of membership, attending 3-5 workouts per week I can't recall repeating the same workout, ever.

I have never been consistent with any type of workout before I joined UA. The tiered membership helps a ton. I can sign up for the amount of workouts that are realistic to work into my schedule/lifestyle and therefore be confident I will get to my classes each week. I also love the community vibe- within a week or two there will be familiar and friendly faces every time you go. By joining UA you are also supporting a long standing small business and the Mt Airy neighborhood!

The team at Urban Athlete have made working out a positive experience that I now look forward to each week. With a combination of a tailored plan and daily classes, I get a mix of both social support as well as a plan that fits my specific goals. The variety of exercises and types of workouts means I look forward to showing up and I always leave feeling like I did my best which means I have a lot more confidence in my daily life. If you are someone looking for the right place, this is it!

This is an excellent gym and community, and I'd recommend it to anyone. I've worked out my whole life, at all kinds of fitness facilities, and Urban Athlete is the best of all worlds -- knowledgeable staff, tough workouts for any fitness level, and flexible membership plans. The owners and staff care about your health and strength, and they'll be there to support you and challenge you, whatever your fitness goals.

I have been working out for decades and belonged to many gyms from national chains to smaller local places like Urban Athlete. This is hands down the best gym I have ever belonged to. Expert programming and varied workouts. Knowledgeable, friendly coaches who actively pay attention and provide guidance-they don't just stand there. A wonderful and welcoming Mt.-Airy-chill-vibe sense of community. Works for all ages and fitness levels-though your fitness will increase, quickly. Highest possible recommendation-five stars is not enough.

Update: UA like all gyms was challenged by the pandemic. They made it through better than ever.

Check it out!

What can I say about UA other than it is best gym EVER! I have definitely been one of those people who gets bored with working out and going to the gym but not at Urban Athlete. Pamela and her crew of instructors always have interesting and intense work-outs planned each day. The small class sizes make working out so much fun and the instructors are always willing to give helpful tips and recommend new exercises if you need. The open gyms are great as they allow you to work out when you want. Above everything, this is the first gym that I have joined where I feel a true sense of camaraderie with both the staff and fellow patrons which makes going to UA and working-out an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience (Not to mention the fact that now my wife says I have "guns").

I love this gym! I have worked out there for years. The staff treats everyone as family. In other gyms I have gone to, you can go for months and never speak to a soul, this place has a community vibe. The workouts involve your whole body, so you get fit really fast. It is a great value because of the quick results and education you receive about technique!!!

I have been working out at UA since it opened. Great atmosphere and really caring knowledgable staff. The sense of community is what separates them from another gym. Worth every penny. I recommend them to everyone and I will never go back to a "regular gym"
