Sauna still closed for months. Classes are more for older people. Rusted equipment in bad need of servicing or replacement. Gym is very small so limited equipment and people will block others from using equipment with their stretches (Tbf there isn’t a dedicated place for them to do this). People lounge around and socialize for a long time while on the equipment keeping others from using it so you can’t get your workout in (mostly the older folks). There’s only 1 of many of the popular machines such as bench press, incline bench, and smith machine so it’s hard to use those. A lot of the equipment is in bad need of servicing, for example the cable pulleys in the center of the gym require either a strong person or two people to adjust the height. Some of the pulley systems for the machines are not frictionless making lifting awkward. Some of the attachments only have 1 set and if they’re in use, you’re gonna have to wait (for example, the D-handle attachments). Some of the equipment is just cheap, for example the leg abductor machine is useless, you get maybe a 3 inch range of motion (try it out yourself and you’ll see what I mean), back extension machine sucks, the leg curl machine is Not smooth. Half of the cardio equipment is not used at all times representing excess and a waste of space. They could probably get rid of 2 ellipticals, 2 treadmills, etc and add more weight machines. Not an efficient use of the already small space. The gym music sucks because most of the time it’s just some commercial playing in the background. I’m not sure what the sanitizing stuff is but it’s like watered down rubbing alcohol or something.

People doing disgusting personal hygiene in the locker rooms and not even having the deceny to do it in a stall or clean up. No towel service.

Lots of sketchy people and foul language. There’s a lot of people at this gym relative to how big it is. Probably the smallest YMCA I’ve been to.

Edit:
YMCA is yet to take action on the gym equipment. Thanks for the corporate response though.

The pool is pretty nice for a community Y, but the hours are ridiculous— they close at 4pm on weekends and 8pm during the week, and they don’t let u swim ONE SECOND longer– I spend the last few mins worried I’ll get screamed/whistled at because 8 o’clock falls partway thru one of my laps. The app & website often *says* they’re open when they’re not… And there’s no way to know for sure, because no one EVER answers the phone. It’s so frustrating to call because I’m skeptical of the online hours (like today, the day before Labor Day), only to have no one pick up. At least record a message on the voicemail… Is that really a lot to ask? I feel like if you’re gonna close the pool at 4pm on weekends, it makes sense to *either* update the website or answer the phone… I’m not asking you to do both, but you kinda have to do one or the other. This is, like, the 10th time.

I took my first Zumba class with the Instructor outstanding! (Somer Jordan) The class was very welcoming, Highly energetic and informative Learning all those really cool, easy dance moves had me looking like a pro enjoying the fun time with everyone in the class, I love the smiling faces the support and encouragement ,I even forgot we were working out. It just felt like having a good time. thank you, YMCA for having her !

I’ve been going to the West Philadelphia Y for several years, mainly for lap swimming, but also sometimes for yoga.

I have an invisible disability and occasionally need accommodations. The customer service via the website/email has been amazing with getting the help I need in this regard. I have also seen several people with visible disabilities be treated with respect and accessing the facilities.

The new YMCA 360 app makes it easier to see the best times to swim. They include how many lanes are scheduled to be available for different activities, so you can anticipate if it may be especially busy or noisy.

I’ve also been really impressed with the swim instructors who are sometimes teaching kids and teens while I am doing laps. They seem to make it so fun and engaging and there is a real community spirit.

Overall, this Y is wonderful and the staff are so lovely! I’m so glad to live nearby.

I’ve been to better places for less. For the price of the membership I expected to have the best gym ever but it’s really not worth it, I only subscribed because it’s a few steps away from home. They focused too much on the amenities rather than focusing on what really matters, the weight room. Their weight room is way smaller than it looks on the pictures and there is very little room to walk in between the equipment and the people working out, they only have the bare basics and a whole bunch of treadmills that makes it feel more like a hotel gym, plus it’s always hot in there and they kick you out 15 minutes before closing time. Also they will kick you out an hour early without notice during the summer so don’t come in thinking you’re getting a workout in before they close.

I usually use the ymca in Middletown de but I was up this way and figured why not ! There is so many things to do here it’s awesome! I used the weights and went swimming with some really cute guys i met in the store a few days ago. We love hanging out together. Me and the frat boys work out all the time and we always work out shirtless because we get sweaty. The locker room was really nice and clean it even had a slight hint of cologne smell which is better than smelling sweaty clothes. There was a huge spider web 🕸️ in the lobby we almost walked right through the web. It looked sticky and the spider was creepy looking. The staff told us they would call an exterminator ASAP we left we wanted nothing to do with that big web. If they take the web down, we will definitely be coming But if the Web is still there next time we return, we will throw a tantrum on the ground with the toddler! FRAT BOY GANG FIR LIFE!!!

I am very upset about why they do not answer the phone. I called them for two days straight. Nobody answers the phone so if there was something important, I needed if my child was there or something happened they’re not answering their phones. I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and try again today still no answering the phone. What are they doing that nobody’s answering the phones there it doesn’t make any sense to me so I had to drive all the way up there to ask a question that could’ve been answered on the phone do better people. Everything else is fine. I love going there. I love to swim. I love the workout classes, but y’all need to answer your phones. You never know what the phone call is about .

Update: The YMCA responded that they are eager to learn more about my experience and asked that I call them. The phone number they gave me connected to a voicemail box that's full and cannot accept messages.

Five times I requested in writing the new member orientation to the equipment and classes. No response. The desk clerk confirmed twice that this orientation was available to members and I was using the right form.

When I got tired of being ignored, I canceled my membership on the last day of the month. They responded that they needed time to process my request and charged me for an additional month.

Once a toilet stall in the men's locker room was dirtier than a port-a-potty at the mummer's parade.

My wallet was stolen from my locker, but that was my own fault for not using a lock.

I don’t particularly like exercising but Angela’s spin class on Tuesdays and Thursdays is my exception! She’s very kind and upbeat to everyone regardless of experience and fitness levels. She always explains everything but lets you know to go at your own pace. She mixes in local musical artists so I feel like I’m learning about Philly music as a bonus. The other regulars in the class are very nice and it’s fun to see them regularly. I should probably check out the gym and other classes but really I keep my membership for Angela’s classes.

Highly annoyed. Wasted my time coming here in this heat and my children can’t swim because they don’t have enough lifeguards. They update their app/site for everything else but couldn’t send an alert out about the pool being closed due to a staff shortage. And then there’s swimmers leaving the pool area and they are not even keeping track to let others go in. Just unprofessional.

They definitely have everything able to do. I wish I was able to leave my daughter with other children but they were able to play and swim. I don't like how the kids are able to see if a parent's having a ball through the window. Maybe they should move the table or something because I will feel guilty. I will definitely do me. I can do a bunch of stuff... Such as Hot tub, water aerobics and so on and have her (my daughter) sitin on the sideline.. Other than that..no real complaints

I am a new YMCA employee and went into this Y for the first time to set up my complimentary membership. Tim approached me at the front desk and asked what branch I work at (I am brand new to Philly and actually work at an elementary school through the Y). When I couln't answer right away, he glanced at his coworkers and snickered at me. I apologized and explained that I'm new and don't physically work in the Y. He became very condescending and when I couldn't answer his question, he rolled his eyes, shook his head, and laughed at me as he just walked away. Luckily, Herminia swooped in to set me up and was incredibly accomodating and sweet. She is an angel. As someone who's new to the area and to this organization, I expected a lot more than being made fun of and ignored. Very disappointed and upset. I would rather pay for a planet fitness membership than come here for free.

It's not the nicest YMCA facility that you'll ever visit, but it has all of the basics and is conveniently located in the middle of West Philly. The real winner for this location is that the staff and volunteers are all very friendly and helpful and the programs that are available to members are abundant and easy to utilize. The online schedule for things like the pool and the gyms can take a little getting used to, but once you're used to them they're easy to read and follow.

Unsure about this place... I will be trying again in the next couple days. I remember last year around this time. I came in because someone told me to ask about the Ymca, taking a percentage off of Childrens Summer camp prices, for certain health insurances. I walked in and asked the guard- who was pretty much "over it" as soon as I asked that.question. I tried to ask her about information about the Summer Camps and she told me to go on their website. As if there is no reason for you to stand in this lobby/welcome desk. It was rude but maybe they dont have the same staff this year. I went to this camp when I was younger and so did my cousin. I wanted my son to have a good experience as well.

But what Greg really excels at is meeting people where they are -- he will provide modifications or will make things harder depending on who is doing the work-out. Finally, Greg cares about his class and those take it. That is turn makes the class a kind of mini community of people within the larger community of the Y.

This place has been a second home to my daughter and myself since her birth. It’s the only gym in West that offers childcare and she asks me to go so she can play with her Y-Mommy, Ms Kim! We do wish the child watch was available Saturday afternoons and sometime on Sunday. Ms Felicia at the front desk always offers a warm greeting and helps me enroll in special programs. We’ve tried basketball, tumbling, swimming, and several different flavors of dance. The instructors are always kind and patient, and she enjoys herself very much. I love the Pilates classes. Ms Elleen is a fountain of knowledge and has completely improved the foundation of my health. Yoga with Nelly is awesome. The wellness room has a lot of machines and is often crowded but the people are usually courteous and encouraging. Especially Greg! He always offers useful, helpful, easy to implement advice and the occasional inspiration! And I didn’t even mention the swimming pool, whirlpool, and sauna. Great facility. Even better people! West Philly (YMCA) is the best Philly!!!

Me and my daughter loves coming to West Philadelphia YMCA. Every group class is effective and always on time according to schedule. Every-time I ride past I smile thinking about how proud I am to have joined the Y family and has since been a member since 2021-2022. Greg the bootcamp instructor gives you a workout that keeps up coming back for more. Only thing I would wish is for the personal trainer classes to be more affordable for me that would seal the deal.

Love the ymca. Got a membership again after about 12 years. I was about 15 then. It's always super nostalgic going there. Best part is that it's full of amazing people. Everyone there is pushing to better themselves in some way, shape, or form. The staff are great too. They're friendly and welcoming, and the classes are great too.

Shout out to Ms. Arlene and Greg. Their classes are sure to help you achieve your fitness goals. Greg is going to challenge you, not only physically, but mentally as well.

Although the facility may not be as fancy as the other ymca's, you won't find better people that are passionate about helping the members of their communities

I take the Boot Camp class with Greg and it’s so effective, challenging and fun. I went to HS with him and he was always funny and cool stayed out of trouble and was easy going and easy to get along with. I’m happy to see that He’s doing good in adulthood. Thanks Greg! Keep it all coming, the boot camp, the advice and wisdom. It’s a blessing to myself and my Husband!

They were having trouble checking the members in. As a result, I was not allowed to come in although my membership was paid. The lady at the counter was so mean and inconsiderate. She would not let me in. It was a very cold early morning. She didn't care if I had travelled far to get there. I ended up calling management when I got home and after several days they straightened out their mistake. This turned me off. I did not renew my membership and no longer go there. They were not customer service friendly. I am looking for another gym.

This place really needs to create and enforce rules around power rack use. There's only two, and consistently there's one taken up by a person doing stretches or curls in them.

Other than that, place is phenomenal--great staff and new equipment!

I just called to get information on memberships using insurance, although the information was given, the person who answered the phone was rude and dismissive. Not customer service friendly at all.

Staff overall is great. Very helpful ! Although there is one that sits at the front you can’t tell if it’s a female or male. He/she is very nasty and unprofessional. She argues back and not very pleasant at all. Even down to answering questions everything seems like a problem to He/she….
