We are a karate school, martial arts facility, and self-defense center in Johnston, RI. We specializes in youth instruction and adult classes for all ages for Johnston, RI and the surrounding area. We also provide private and group corporate self-defense training. Our instructors take pride in providing effective and practical self-defense for out students. We care about our clients as if they were family and prepare them for a confident and productive life.

Taking my son to RI Self Defense was one of the best things I've ever done for him. Not only does he love it, but he's learning so much. Big changes in skill, discipline and attitude since I first started bringing him. All of the sensei are phenomenal and truly seem to enjoy working with the kids and teaching them everything they know. 12 out of 10. Highly recommended 💪💯

Speaking on behalf of the adult Kempo class, the instructors are all so knowledgeable and want to see you push yourself. I’ve been here for over 2 years and it still feels like we’re going over new material. This place does not give belts out, they are earned. The people in class are all very respectful and are really serious about training. I’ve heard horror stories of other places dealing with big egos and Alpha mentality, this place is the complete opposite! Great place I highly recommend it.

Prior to enrolling my son at RI Self Defense, I conducted extensive research, including numerous phone calls and visits to other martial arts schools. I am extremely pleased with our decision to choose RI Self Defense. I love this place! I came here for their adult self-defense classes, and I am so happy I didi! Michael is an awesome instructor, and the group is very welcoming. I am not the most athletic or coordinated person, and i'm also very shy, but everyone quickly made me feel welcome and comfortable. If you want affordable self-defense classes that will walk you through real-life scenarios, this is the place for you!

I can't brag enough about RI Self Defense Center! I began taking self defense classes a few months ago and absolutely love it! The classes are direct and focused on learning the strategies/moves needed to defend myself in various situations. With the growing number of violent crimes, these skills are essential to ensure a feeling of empowerment, confidence and safety. The classes are at a convenient time that can easily be attended after work. The gym itself is clean, organized and full of friendly people who are happy to help you learn and grow! I plan to continue to learn and develop my skills at RI Self Defense!

My son Matthew has been training at RI Self Defense for 5 years. If you want REAL WORLD self defense for yourself or your child, this is the school for you. Dedicated, highly trained instructors at EVERY class. Very reasonable tuition, no contracts EVER. The owner, Mike, is a great guy and always has his students' best interest at heart. He loves what he does and it shows.

RI Self Defense Center is an amazing place tucked into the crossroads of several communities. The teaching staff is knowledgeable and friendly, being intimately familiar with the martial arts they teach. They have a lineage of practitioners that stretch back to the founding of the martial arts scene in Rhode Island and many of these living treasures can be found about the school (and are always willing to chat). With a mix of modern and old world teaching methodologies, one can sense that while tradition is important, there is always an eye toward the future. Don't expect rec-rooms or fancy lounges here. While there is plenty of room for spectators, the floor is maximized for work out space. This is a place one comes to train and the best place to watch a class is to be in one. Give the great people of RI Self Defense Center a call.

My daughter has been going to karate class for about a month. She loves it! I feel it has increased her confidence in herself. The class is structured and fun at the same time. The students work in small groups and are able to get individualized instruction. Mike is awesome!

Excellent instructors. They take their time and make sure your child is ready to move on. No hyper focus on "next belt" but rather a focus on mastery of the skill. They work in groups and one on one as each child needs. Mike always makes it fun for the kids in varying ways and has a fantastic animated personality. Also, has top level staff/helpers as well. I feel fortunate it was nearby and we found this perfect dojo.
