Great gym and great staff! The team is super helpful and the atmosphere is really down-to-earth. I've been working with one of their personal trainers after having a baby and have been really happy with the guidance, support and results I’ve seen so far. FIRE YOUR CURRENT TRAINER!!! I had never done anything even close to this type of exercise before. Seb and Ian (and their two adorable gym dogs) welcomed me and helped me start from the ground up. They always prioritized safety and good form. Yet they also pushed everyone in their classes to be their best. Their workouts are really challenging but also fun and creative. The community there is a very friendly and supports each other in all kinds of ways. They even have a work out on Saturdays at a local coffee roaster where you get free coffee afterwards! I am forever grateful that they introduced me to a new level of fitness where I am stronger than I’ve ever been in my life. These two brothers are the real deal. They have built something wonderful and you definitely don’t want to miss it.

I am your textbook definition of a has-been athlete. Once I crossed the 30 threshold, everything that was once easy became so much harder. I started training with Rebecca & now Daniel and couldn't be more thankful. I needed a trainer who could spot my BS from a mile away, always pushes me harder than I'd push myself & makes lifting enjoyable. The atmosphere at Black Flag is welcoming & fun, with a super thorough and knowledgeable staff. Can't recommend this gym enough!

Seb is unlike any trainer I've worked with before. His expertise and experience truly stand out, made each session both challenging and rewarding. For the first time in decades, I found myself looking forward to going to the gym. He helped me achieve lifts and exercises I never thought I could do. Wonderful gym with an awesome staff! I was in the area vacationing and needed a place to train...this ended up being perfect. The whole staff were incredibly helpful and inviting and the gym was equipped with everything needed for barbell training. It was also very clear to me that the staff care deeply about their members and that the regular clients training there were getting a lot out of their investment.

My wife and I have been working with Ian and Seb at Black Flag Gym for about 6 months so far, best gym and personal trainer experience I have ever had. They are always on time for appointments, never have too many people scheduled in the gym at one time and spend the entire time focused on the training program they designed specifically for you. I came in with some nagging shoulder and back issues and can safely say those problems are a thing of the past. While we mostly work with Seb and Ian, we have had some sessions with Rebecca and Jon, they were great too. It’s clear that everyone in there knows what they are doing, pays close attention to you during each work out and pushes you to achieve the results you are looking for. Highly recommend these guys!

Can't say enough great things about Black Flag Gym along with Ian and Seb - great dudes that care about giving people a safe, clean, well-equipped space to work out in. Super knowledgeable, friendly, and always happy to help or answer any questions. I've taken classes and personal training sessions with them and some of their staff and it's always been a great experience. Recently (the past 7 months) I've been doing 3x personal training sessions per week and have been blown away by the results. I wanted to get stronger and have more mobility but was nervous because of weak/injured lower back and shoulder from old military injuries - but one of their trainers (Andrew, a PT med student) has helped me open up and strengthen my back and shoulder to a place of mobility and strength I was never sure I would see again. I feel amazing and find myself looking forward to my next gym visit. Stoked to have them so close to us on the island and looking forward to continuing my fitness journey with them. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!

If you are looking for a great gym with all the equipment you need to get a solid workout in, this is the place. They have personal trainers and group classes but I go to open gym. Always have racks and weights available and a huge window to make sure I can get my workout in. Highly recommend. Great gym, great people, great atmosphere.

Black Flag is without a doubt one of the coolest places in Charleston and the best gym out there. I began my fitness journey here about a month ago and am already seeing the incredible impact and transformation training is having on my body. The Black Flag team all goes the extra mile to help members excel and workout the right way. I have been taking online training with Ian since March of 2021. He has been very responsive and patient with all my questions and gives great feedback and information on how to do certain exercises. He worked with me on working out at home with minimal equipment as I didnt want to go to the gym during the height of the pandemic. That and also working with me on my vegetarian diet. The results have been evident to people that see me often. All for a very reasonable monthly fee. I highly recommend Black Flag fitness for their knowledge and personal touch.

I have been going to this gym working with a personal trainer for 6 months. I have worked with 4 different trainers, and loved the opportunity to learn new things from each one of them during the start of my journey. Each of them inserts their own knowledge and personality to every workout, which makes it so fun and challenging! Seb took on my very first training session, and I was so nervous. He made me feel instantly calm and helped me to work on the basics of form without making the experience too intimidating. I started working with Mike regularly, who is a huge sports fan with an even bigger personality. He made every workout super fun and helped me continue to work on my skills and form so I could start lifting more weight and keep climbing the hill! Then Ian took me on and was really able to start working on the finer details of the heavier lifting. He was an awesome support and really did his best to push me farther in every session! I have now started to work with Angelica exclusively for the last couple months which has allowed her to get to know my strengths and weaknesses so she can tailor every workout to our goals. She is so fun and extremely supportive - I am lucky to have her working with me!
I am so happy and excited with the strides I have made in feeling more fit and healthy. I love this gym family and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me with their help and guidance!

I live in Raleigh NC and use their virtual training program and it is AWESOME. 2020 was not an active year for me and I put on about 20 pounds. After my first month of working with this team I am down 10 pounds and enjoy being active again. They customize all virtual trainings and programs specific to your body and are always available to answer any questions. This gym is the real deal. My husband and I are both members at Black Flag, and both began here with very different ability levels. We love that we can take the classes together, and are still each challenged to achieve our own separate goals.
As a beginner with bootcamp style classes, I am extremely appreciative of the time that the trainers take to correct form and provide feedback. Mike, Ian and Seb are patient, motivating, and extremely knowledgable. After 8 months, this is easily the strongest I've felt, and the most motivated I have been to continue to reach my own fitness goals. If you're looking for the best gym around - you've found it!

Hands down the best gym and best team of trainers I have ever used! Seb has been my personal trainer for a year and a half and I’m so grateful for his guidance and knowledge. I’ve made tremendous improvements in my health since starting a normal routine at Black Flag. I came to BF a couple years after a bad knee injury and I don’t think I would have stuck with it if I didn’t have Seb (and Andrea, the physical therapist extraordinaire!) on my team.

Great classes and great personal training experiences at Black Flag. The classes are for all levels of fitness, whether you are a rookie or seasoned vet you will get a great workout. A perk to this kind of gym is the small class sizes. If you are having bad form they will quickly let you know to correct it. Basically you get the same watchful eye from the trainer as you would if you were in a personal training session. The gym is very clean and takes all the required steps in the Covid era. And best of all, they have AC.

I am a true amateur when it comes to working out. I've been a member at several box gyms before but I have no clue what to do as soon as I step foot in a gym; I usually play on a treadmill or elliptical and stare at the other people on cardio machines wondering how they are able to do this every day for 30+ minutes because I am truly bored after 2!
I've also tried at-home workouts but I have terrible form and honestly it's boring to workout in your living room (for me at least).
Entering my 30s and knowing exercise is important for your health, I set out to find a solution for both my husband and myself, because honestly it is more fun when we can do things together and we can keep each other accountable. I did a lot of research for local options and found Black Flag which has truly checked every box on my list.
Through the dynamic and highly educated trainers at Black Flag we've been able to get in great workouts several times a week that meet both mine and my husband's individual fitness levels. My focus has been on being more active and improving over all health but over the past few months I've noticed my stamina increase, I can lift heavier weights, my form is getting better (lol... I still have so much work to do on form!). I used to dread the gym and now we really look forward to going; every day is a new adventure in bootcamp classes and a new opportunity to push yourself!
Again, I reiterate my amateur status on this but Seb, Ian and Mike have literally been the best coaches with us. They are always helpful in correcting form for each workout, which makes what you are doing safer and much more effective. Also, everyone that works out there is really friendly and encouraging; it is a welcoming environment and not intimidating at all.
My husband hopes to one day have enough room in his schedule to also add some personal training to his routine but in the meantime, we will be attending the bootcamp classes as long as Black Flag continues to hold them!

I've always been a self starter when it came to exercise and was very much into a routine of my own where I thought I didn't need a trainer. I WAS WRONG. I started private sessions 1 x per week, then to 2 x and now I'm 3 x and honestly wish I could go every day. Seb has completely tailored my workouts to my goals (hellooo abs and toned arms!) and always switches up my workouts to target different areas safely and effectively. I've lost weight, built muscle and am stronger than ever. Not only is this a great gym and convenient location, but these guys truly care about their clients, push them (in a good way) are all around awesome people. I've been going to classes for a few months now. I'm very happy with progress that I've seen. The classes are great because they are scalable so you don't have to be in incredible shape to start, but you can continue to push yourself. The monthly challenges help you see your improvements. I was tired of going through the motions and had plateaued in my workouts in a gym so I gave the group fitness classes a try. I joined in January and rarely miss a day! The classes are small and unique every time so you always get something different. The trainers are awesome, knowledgeable! From the very first time I set foot in Black Flag, everyone has been really great! Super friendly group, and it's always a fun day at the gym. I started training with Seb and I can honestly say I've never worked with a better trainer. He's professional, motivating, and there is always something new each session. Black Flag Gym is hands down the most professional and safest environment to work out in. I go three times per week for personal training and also attend boot camp classes and can say with certainty that safety while getting you to your max potential is priority one at this gym. If you’ve never lifted weights in the past, or even if you have, you can come here knowing that you’ll be learning and/or doing it correctly. Going to the gym was the bane of my existence since leaving the Marine Corps 10 years ago. I was a member of the other gym on Johns Island for the past 3 years and when my brother-in-law mentioned this gym was different, I stopped in to check it out. I immediately cancelled the other membership and schedule my first appointment with Seb. What sets them apart is the one-on-one personal training with each gym session. These guys are CSCSes and know exactly how to get you to your fitness goals. I don’t do the small group classes (I just do personal training 3x per week) but those too look like a blast. It’s become a small family where monthly fitness competitions keep all of the members engaged with their goals. For some that think they can’t have someone yelling at them - trust me, this isn’t that. Brothers Seb and Ian are incredibly motivating and respond quickly to improvements in your strength. I promise you’ll get an incredible workout with every session. Try it for a week and I’m willing to bet you’ll continue. If you hate the normal gyms as much as I have, then you’ll love this, as much as I do.

Probably the best gym I have been to in 10 years. It’s a bit spartan but it has all the essentials. The owners have helped me improve tremendously over the last 4 months. I’m only an open gym member but it doesn’t feel that way. Seb and Ian are always around to spot or offer form corrections.

Was hesitant at first due to my assumption that it was a "body building" gym, but man oh man, could I not have been more wrong. I told Ian, one of the guys who I think runs the place, that I preferred to get lean rather than super strong, and he helped me design a workout plan that did just that. Everyone there is super supportive and there's almost a club house atmosphere where its also high energy, fun, and lively. Anyone on john's island should try it out once, you wont be sorry!

By far the best gym on John's Island! Ian and Seb push you to the next level and provide a challenging work out that fits your personal fitness goals. Their knowledge of fitness training and personal workouts reassure you that you are learning from people that actually understand the science behind fitness and training (unlike other gyms). I highly recommend to get over there and get in a workout with those guys!

I cannot wait until the new location is officially open for business! Training with Seb & Ian at Black Flag Gym has gotten me in the best shape of my life and I could not ask for better trainers.
