I come here every time I visit family in town. I figured it made sense to buy a punch pass to save some money. I wasnβt warned about an expiration. Today I came to climb and was told my punches expired (I had 5 remaining). First of all, that is the most unfriendly approach towards your customer base. Second of all, if they are going to expireβ then train your staff to bring this up.
Prior to that, I had been getting overcharged every time I purchased a day pass. I think shoes or something were added on and I finally figured that out and was so frustrated. Not to mention they have a tip screen at checkout.
I generally leave positive reviews at places but this is BS. Coastal needs to work on the policies to be more friendly and informative to customers. Instead Iβll probably grudgingly come in again because itβs the only climbing gym in the area. Iβd not come back here otherwise and am definitely not a fan of this place.

They have three different sections with all different difficulties. Prices are really good for the day pass w/ shoe rental and included chalk. If you get there early enough they also have a small parking lot so you donβt need to gamble with side street parking. Overall, a great first experience and 10/10 staff!

We did expect to have so much fun when we heard it was βonly bouldering.β There were 3 rooms and so many things to do! 3 walls you could adjust the degree, climbing ropes, hanging rings, and more. The layout of the building was impressive considering the tiny exterior. We spent 2 hrs but could have easily spent 4-5.
Everything from wipes, hand lotion, chalk bags, colored climbing paths, and plenty of space had been considered. We will definitely return

Fairly new to climbing and took a quick class the other day, nervous being unfamiliar with how to climb but I felt welcomed immediately and learned a lot in my first class. Staff was very welcoming and kind. Even had a monthly member chat with me after about climbing and it helped me feel excited to return. Would recommend the classes if youβre new and wanted to learn the basics to get started.

As someone who typically feels out of my depth in gyms, I was immediately impressed by the welcoming environment, knowledgable staff, and empowered climbers of all levels at Coastal. There is a vast variety of routes and specialized equipment so that you can start at whatever intensity youβre comfortable with and strengthen from there. The members I encountered were coaching and cheering others on during climbing attempts. Folks genuinely root for one another because the biggest competition isnβt with other climbers, itβs with oneself. I look forward to returning and pursuing this challenging and rewarding skill!

Coastal climbing is the spot!! Climbing culture always comes with friendly faces but nothing exceeds the lovely staff here. Katie Horton welcomed me and a new climber I had brought along with open arms and a chalk bag. She pointed out a new slab wall that had been set for us to decipher and enjoy. Amazing experience. Amazing routes. And an even more amazing Katie Horton.

Awesome local climbing gym. The atmosphere, setting, staff, and members are wonderful and welcoming to everyone. I have been to a lot of gyms around the country and this is one of the best. Every inch of the gym has been designed for all levels of climbers from beginners to advanced. Coastal climbing also has a unique adjustable crack feature on a tension board, very cool training tool! If you want to get really strong and have fun doing it, this is the place!

My visit to Costal Climbing was my first time at a rock climbing gym and it was a very fun experience. The 3 climbing areas in the gym provided plenty of variety (overhangs, verticals, slants) for a newcomer like myself.
While Iβm not the greatest fan of heights, I never felt uneasy will climbing since there were enough precautions to keep me safe, so if you have a fear of heights it may be a good way to help overcome/combat it to some degree.
I mostly stuck to V1-V2 walls but there were some V3 walls that were fun to attempt even if I failed them.
I went right around the time they open and the atmosphere was very chilI. I had no issues with the other people there and everyone was respectful and alert to others around them.
The price was also great for the fun I had so no complaints there.
I will definitely be back in the future (itβs been a weekly thing for going on 3 weeks now) to improve my skills and chill.

Fun experience! There are 3 main areas- a tiny room upstairs about 10ft high, a large room with climbing walls measuring maybe 20ft and stretching area with floor to ceiling mirrors, and the last room that's the hardest with another climbing wall, climbing treadmill, weights, and some other equipment.
I like that the day pass allows you to come and go, so if you want to get lunch or dinner and return after you can. I'm not very good at it and go for fun, but there's a non-judgmental energy with both the staff and the other patrons.

As much as I wanted to love climbing here, I was not very satisfied with this climbing gym. There is very little climbing offered, being only bouldering, for a price that is equal to any other gym I've been to that offered twice the bouldering and included tall wall climbing, as well as exercise classes and equipment. Weightlifting equipment is barred off to guests, only 5 parking spaces available, and you have to manually move mats while climbing, leading to a queue of waiting for others to finish using one to climb yourself. Memberships are far too costly for the services offered and cost more than any of the other gyms I'd visited previously yet offering far less, even with the premium membership. Being the only indoor climbing gym around, it's a shame that the gym doesn't upgrade to keep up with the rising popularity of climbing.

Great DIY-vibe gym with a lot of fun, thoughtful climbs. Boulders only, and the gym is generally pretty small but the route setting is great with a proper selection of holds. They have a kilter board and several other training boards, along with a pretty humble bench/dumbbell gym setup.
Great community/supportive vibe at this gym. I came here while on a gig in Charleston and immediately felt welcomed. Climbing here is hard and youβll have to earn some climbs below your typical gym grade, but the sets are good and worth the effort.

My son and I did a newbie lesson with Hannah. We are from out of state but had the time while visiting the area. She was great, asked a few questions to tailor our hour and then covered basics and familiarized us with the gym. She got us climbing and then coached us with basic techniques to keep in mind. We both loved it...my son is pumped to climb again soon. That's a successful first lesson. Thank you

When I first visited Coastal Climbing, it had been awhile since Iβd been climbing so I decided to take a Quick Class to get a refresher and a solid introduction to the gym. Best decision I could have made! My instructor, Kirsten, was friendly, professional, and overall a joy to learn from. She was very patient when I needed to rest, encouraged me when I struggled, and celebrated my successes with me. This may be the only bouldering gym in Charleston, but itβs the only one you need! Highly recommend for beginner and experienced climbers alike.

Having not been in two years due to COVID, I was pleasantly surprised they had done some upgrades and expansions. Three kilter walls and basically a full training facility on top of the border and they already offer.
As far as climbs go I find them very stout but quite enjoyable. Nothing like getting a little razzled on a climb that you feel like you should be able to do and then getting it and feeling amazing.
I always enjoy my sessions here and the staff are very helpful with explaining any gym specific rules.

This place is the absolute bomb. Theyβve got great pricing, a wider variety of climbing gear to purchase than a lot of gyms, and despite it being bouldering only they have a lot of equipment to use. It also seems like everyone here knows what climbing culture is all about which not a lot of gyms have. Finally, all the problems are so much fun, have a great flow, and the grades are fairly consistent. The route setters here definitely know what theyβre doing. Great atmosphere, great gym

I really enjoy each time I go to Coastal Climbing.
I got the summer membership which is $190 for June-August. As a USC student, I am not home in Charleston during the school year. I found this to be fairly-priced as a normal membership wouldβve been over $250 for the summer.
The climbing routes rotate just enough to where youβll never feel bored or stuck.
The staff are really friendly, and so are the other members.
Unlike many commercial gyms Iβve been to, Coastal Climbing never feels gross. And arguably there are way more people touching more surfaces and walking around barefoot at this gym than Planet Fitness, Crunch, or Pivotal.
I will be renewing my membership over winter break because of the positive experiences Iβve had this summer.

Went and took a class to see how Iβd like it, I wasnβt expecting much. The class lasted an hour and I learned so much. I took the class by myself and had a 1 on 1 class with Kirsten who has been climbing for 10 years. The building is clean and well kept. Thereβs only bouldering here but for me thatβs a plus to not have to worry or deal with harnesses. All in all wonderful experience and I ended up joining the gym after the class.

I just started climbing regularly a few months ago and stopped by this gym while visiting Charleston. It was AMAZING. The climbs were challenging and even as a beginner, there was so much for me to do. I ended up staying almost 3 hours on my day pass and am still sore. Their COVID protocol was great and in addition to mask wearing, one entire wall was open which let in a nice salty breeze. 10/10 experience! I will have to stop by again the next time I am in Charleston.

Overall I do appreciate the layout of the gym. They're out seem to be set pretty fairly. I wouldn't mind if they got to reset a little more often but my big quarrel that leaves me at 3 stars is the fees. $55 a month isn't a bad cost for a membership and I was a little hesitant with the extra start-up fee that came along with it. But now two months later after my workload has gotten heavier coming to the realization that I won't be able to climb as often as I want to, when I went to cancel my membership I was informed that there would also be a $30 cancellation fee for canceling before you had had a membership for a year. That seems like pretty sleazy business tactics to me.
Edit: they were incredibly understanding when I explained my case.
I'm sorry for being so abrasive earlier.
These are good people and it's a great gym.

I love Coastal Climbing! I have been a climber for 15 years, and when I first moved to Charleston, I had to build a home wall because there was no climbing gyms. Thanks to all the hard work of Kensie and Jeanna Whitfield I have moved out of my hot garage and now have a great place to climb and build community. I am stoked by the positive people who motivate me to try harder and improve my climbing. I am encouraged every time I see so many new members (of all ages) who are hungry to learn and grow in the sport. They have a joyful spirit and bring me back to my first days of enjoying climbing for the purity of movement and the challenge. The member mixers are great and help us relax and enjoy the vibe of sharing something we all love. My daughters (Rayna 10 & Chloe 8) love coming to Coastal with me. The door greeters (Shadow & Diesel), the resident canines, bring them such joy! So grab a friend and come join me for a great workout! I am the guy with the big beard and a smile :)

Great place for indoor climbing. They have plenty of games to play while your muscles take a break. They even had bottled yerba mate for a good energizer. Warm environment and friendly staff.

Kensie and Jenna get a big thumbs up for bringing bouldering to Charleston, SC. Now, when I visit Mt. Pleasant, I can stay in shape for climbing thanks to Coastal. They have great bouldering and a tread wall, to work on endurance! they work hard to keep the routes fresh and fun.

This place is so great. It's a different and fun workout in an environment full of friendly people. If you show up and have no idea what you're doing (like I did when I started), there are plenty of people ready to help you out! Great climbing products as well, and great staff. Go CLIMB!

Most climbers wouldn't even imagine there would be a climbing gym of this caliber, nor a group of climbers that are this psyched to pull down in a place such as Charleston SC.
When I first heard about this gym opening up a few months back I was PSYCHED (there IS a community of climbers here!).
When I met the owners (Kensie and Jeana) and saw the actual facility I was still excited but I was unsure if the place would keep my attention for more than a few weeks/months at most.
I wanted a way to stay strong so when I traveled out of state I could keep up with my hommies who live and train where there are mountains and rock.
Well I quickly realized that getting bored at this gym is pretty much impossible. The routes are extremely well thought out. The variety of wall angles are perfect for the size of the space, and since their recent renovation (they colored/textured the walls and added a bazillion holds, more roofs/volumes), I honestly can't see myself ever getting bored here.
Oh and they keep this place SUPER clean, the prices are totally reasonable, the routes appeal to all levels, they ALWAYS keep the routes fresh, and the people who frequent this place are amazing. I've made a ton of friends and everyone cheers each other on.
The music is always bumping/motivating... (thankfully), and the owners are very advanced in their use of technology to manage the sign in process/waivers etc. (which is really awesome - i.e. they've got ipads and wifi etc.) and are always surveying the members for what we want to be added to the space, so we get to feel a part of helping to create our 'home' away from home.
I'm incredibly grateful that I don't have to give up my love of climbing since I moved here 2 years ago luckily now that this place opened up.
I'm back at about the level of strength I was 15 years ago when I was climbing full time (bouldering makes you strong!) and I frequent this place 3x per week and NEVER have gotten bored. I can't even imagine it actually. I'd be over there 5x per week if I could fit it into my schedule.
Whether you're a seasoned climbing veteran or a newbie, young or old. You gotta come down and check this place out.
Whether you become a core member of the community we're building at Coastal Climbing or you just come hang with us and use the workout machines and weights... you'll dig the vibe and meet some amazing people.
(Oh and I have a secret motive writing this review as I want the place to get even more busy so they have to EXPAND! Shhhh.. :)

At Coastal Climbing they really go the extra mile to make it not just a bouldering gym, but also a community and gathering place for many of us. The owners are incredibly friendly and down to earth people who are passionate about climbing and making sure you have a great experience. The gym was recently repainted and all of the holds cleaned and reset keeping the experience fresh even for those who have been coming since they opened. A truly great place that makes all feel welcome.

An incredible business. The owner is a really nice guy, and he makes the customers feel special. I had never tried bouldering before, but had been on a rope. Now, all I want to do is boulder in the gym! There are tons of great routes, and we went to return to Charleston for another vacation, just to climb there again! :)

Coastal Climbing truly is THE premier bouldering gym in Charleston. I would say that the opening of this gym has increased the amount of climbers in Charleston tenfold and this is because of the friendly staff, fun atmosphere, and the great bouldering. This is a gym that makes it easy to grow as a climber and meet new friends in the process. The interior is chic and modern and the bouldering is top notch. If you are in the Charleston area and want a great workout while having a fun time, Coastal Climbing is the place for you.

Having started climbing at Coastal Climbing just a few months ago, I couldn't be any happier with the experience. It has a great location, great facilities, and great people! There's an amazing community there, and you can enjoy the rare combination of meeting cool people, getting a solid workout, and having a good time all in one place! The owners are constantly working to make Coastal even better. Recent examples include a treadwall, a complete renovation of the climbing area, and the addition of weekend clinics. I would recommend Coastal Climbing to anyone in the Charleston area, regardless of age, fitness level, or climbing experience (I started coming as a beginner).

This is the best place to climb in the Charleston area. It's jam packed full of routes and features and the atmosphere is great. At the moment there are V0-V7. Great beginner routes and awesome traverses, and if V7 isn't challenging enough and you ask nicely, I'll bet the owners would let you help set even harder stuff.

I honestly don't think this place could get any better. The owners really know just about everything there is to know about climbing and it shows! The routes are changed up routinely and the place is always spotless and in order. Definitely one of the most consistent businesses in the Charleston area.

I'm a beginner, and I've come climbing here five or six times. There are a ton of routes at all difficulty levels, and I doubt I could ever get bored. The owners and the regulars are all very friendly, and are quick to give you pointers and encouragement. It's a great atmosphere, and there's an opportunity to be part of a community if you're looking for that.
They make it possible to do the initial paperwork online, which is awesome, and there are a couple other nice little touches that show they know how to leverage technology for your benefit. Go check it out, and enjoy the easy parking.
