We stopped here on our way out of Town (from MI, heading to IA) after visiting the Black Hills and Wind Cave NP. We’d been tent/car camping for the past couple of days and I wanted a shower before the concert we were heading to. The lady at the front desk was very helpful and kind (she had very light/white blonde hair—only mentioning so she can hopefully get some praise at work) and pointed me in the directions of the shower.

Looked just like the PF I use at home. Everything was organized in a similar way with all the necessary machines. There were also workers present throughout the gym, with one of them cleaning the locker-room while I was in the shower. The locker-room smelled CLEAN and looked it, too! The only thing that kinda irked me was that the shower curtains don’t go all the way down to the floor, which causes the floor outside the shower to get wet and slippery. Otherwise, the water was HOT and the water pressure was high. There were also separate changing rooms which made showering that much easier.

I have went to several other locations and taken my kid with me to shower when we are traveling. This location is the only one I’ve been told that’s not ok. Maybe if it’s a policy all locations should follow the same guidelines.

Second issue with this place….
Make sure you have a “regular” bank account otherwise you’re paying the membership AND a “late fee” even though I have had 2 ways to pay it automatically, it still charged me for the “late fee” multiple times. Basically ever since I signed up. Girl in front says “it’s a flaw in our system for sure”… but nothing can be done. 👍🏼 copy that. Cancelled my membership.

Obviously fair priced. Something is always broken with slow fixes. If it ain’t the massage beds, it’s the showers, if it’s not the showers it’s the urinals and if it’s not the urinals it’s the water fountains. Everything feels like a cheap patch and never fixing the issue because the breaks keep reoccurring in a cycle.

Overall, this Planet Fitness is solid and definitely deserves a good rating. I’m giving it 4 out of 5 stars.

It’s not as large or spacious as some other Planet Fitness locations I’ve been to, but it’s still a nice gym. There’s a good variety of machines, which I really appreciate. Some of the newer equipment from the Matrix brand has been added, which is a nice touch.

The Black Card area is very nice and well-maintained.

That said, I do have a couple of minor complaints. First, there are no blow dryers in the locker room, which is inconvenient. Second, the showers could definitely use more attention—they were kind of moldy compared to other locations I’ve visited.

The staff is friendly, and you can still get a great workout here. I just think a few small improvements could take this gym from good to great.

NASTY showers. Black card member who travels and I have never seen this level of nastiness in showers. Bottoms of showers look dirty or moldy, black looking gunk on top of maybe caulking around inset to put soaps, around bottom tile wall area at seams black gunk again. One shower can see where black stuff coming from opening into shower floor. One shower head I looked at looks like mold on the plastic head where water comes out. One shower has broken base. Holes in ceiling above shower where tiles are broken.
I couldn’t force myself to use this facility even spraying Lysol all over a shower and dressing room. Having to pay $20 for a shower at either Flying J or Loves.

This Planet Fitness location really impressed me. The entire facility was spotless, bathrooms were being cleaned regularly, and the gym floor stayed tidy throughout my visit. There’s a great variety of workout equipment to choose from, and what stood out most was the gym culture, everyone wiped down machines after use, which made for a respectful and comfortable workout environment. I've been going here on and off since 2022, I've watched this place go through numerous changes with machines and workers. The machines are great, but there are plenty of members who are problematic, whether being rude physically or verbally. I know its a gym, not a safe space, but its excessive with the preach one thing and do the other. Further, the facility gives little to no regard for members who reek of pot and even smoke it in the bathroom.

I recently started using planet fitness and let me tell you way better than previous gym I used to use. I won't say what gym I used to use but the previous gym I used was terrible compared to planet fitness. Planet fitness has very modern plans and definitely is a very inviting place for your workout needs. I found the gym to be very clean. I observed the employees who work at the front desk take turns cleaning the facility. One of the employees Ray was very welcoming when I went up to the front desk to ask questions. I definitely will continue to use this gym for my future gym needs

I travel a lot, met Parker at the front desk. Extremely knowledgeable, competent and helpful. Plenty of equipment in good working order. Gym not crowded. The only downside was the locker room, it smelled poorly and there were two guys that appeared to be homeless using the facilities.

Its crowded when I need it, the staff act like they don't want to give you tokens for the massage chair, and they don't ask people to keep going or get off the circuit. People just sit their playing on their phones with the staff watching them. I cancelled my membership.

Very Disappointed! Planet Fitness club in Rapid City which is the ONLY club in Rapid. Closes PF is a 4 Hour Drive. During my 10 day visit, there are several areas that could use attention. Cleanliness, friendliness, broken amenities, no hot water for over a week no locker room shower available, locker room upkeep, 360 Room missing equipment, no 30 minute workout room, no risers, dirty floors, dust bunnies on all equipment, limited lighting within the facility giving a dark vibe for working out, Red Light Equipment Program Panel is not eligible. Total negative tone! These issues impact the quality of our workouts. Recent online reviews echoing the same concerns/consistency suggests that these issues are affecting more than just a few members.This is not the Planet Fitness Brand "way". Addressing issues will significantly improve the membership and member experience.

This sucks to say but I don’t recommend this place. I love how affordable it is but you get what you pay for. Meaning the water fountain is broke, the cycling bikes are broke, and elliptical machines have lopsided feet pegs.
I’ve been there for over a year and the cycling bikes have still been broken but yet they just installed new equipment.

It doesn’t make sense. The last straw was definitely not having the water machine working but yet they weren’t offering any free water. I’ll be switching asap.

They are good! I have had a membership there for awhile now. When I would go to the gym I loved all the options they have and their team is usually so nice. It was always clean when I was there and if they were really busy a team member was doing their best to make sure everything was clean and stocked. Only downside is that I cannot cancel my membership through the app or over the phone. I have to go in person which is hard for me with my schedule. I only want to cancel temporarily until I can figure out my life schedule with a fulltime job, a toddler and after work responsibilities.

Facility is nice. However, their administrative service is horrible. I have been trying to get a refund from them for over 3 months. I believe they overcharged me when I switched memberships. They haven't disagreed with me and just keep ignoring me. That is rude and horrible customer service. I keep telling them communication is key, and in my last email to them, I said social media was my next step to get their attention. Guess we'll see if it works.

By far the dirtiest PF I have ever been to. I don’t think the floor has ever been vacuumed or the machines lifted to vacuum underneath. There is so much dust and grime on machines, it should be unacceptable. I’ve been to other PF in AZ and have never seen anything like this. They need to do better! I travel the country for work and utilize PF in my travels. With that said, the gym area here is nice and equipment works properly. However the mens locker room is the worst of any PF I have ever been to. I have been here for 3½ months now. The showers I'm not sure have ever been cleaned during that time. I know for sure they havnt the last month for the same trash is in them. The shower curtains are molded as are the showers. Urinals are caked in urine, it literally smells like a bad nursing home. I've addressed it with staff and they just look at me for interrupting... what a shame!

This PF is very clean, the staff are attentive and the general membership is respectful. Women’s locker room is clean and well kept. Good variety of equipment. Massage area is always awesome.
However, there is no timed weight room but in place of that is another well stocked free weight room. It would be nice to have some mirrors in that secondary weight room like the other free weight section.
Also I love the real spin bikes! But they are needing peddle maintenance as the straps have broken off one recently. The canvas straps are best for comfort during workouts. It would be great to get rid of those other cycles as they are really outdated and trade half of them for more spin bikes. They take up less room. They give you a better workout and the spin class peloton-like monitor is a great option as well. But, having some without is fine b/c there are others like myself that use their phone, watch the tvs or nothing for a workout😁

The staff always come running to open the door for me due to my wheel chair, the manager came and did the stair stepper with me so I wouldnt fall and stopped the machine for me. I would like to file a complaint about the worst communication I have ever experienced. You are unable to respond either by email or phone. For a month now, I’ve been trying to find out whether you’ve received my letter regarding the cancellation of my membership, but no one is able to give me an answer, and I still don’t know if my membership will be canceled or not. UPDATE: Ten days after I sent the certified mail as they insisted on the phone (note that it is only "recommended" on their response below, but their employees are trained to say "required". I am assuming that is to lessen the chance that the frazzled member who desires to be a former member, is less likely to go through with the termination, because who really is able to get to the post office these days?) I noticed the annual charge on my bank account of over $40.00. I went online to track my certified letter and it is being "held at the Rapid City, SD 57701 post office at 1:48 pm on August 22, 2024. This is at the request of the customer." I called the facility and the manager was not available, but they took a message. At this point he has not called me back.

EDIT to respond to Developer--You did not need my signature to START taking my money, why do you need my signature to STOP taking my money? Do you really have a problem with people coming in and canceling other people's memberships? What's the real risk? You don't even have my original signature to compare the cancelation signature to. This is in no way a security for me.

Original Review: Even though I live an hour from Rapid City, I joined Planet Fitness online several years ago in January with great intentions, thinking I could work out on my lunch hour. However, I was never able to make it work.

Signing up is a breeze. So simple, just fill in the information and click, and your done! Quitting, however is a different story. I kept my membership intentionally for a year hoping that somehow I'd make it work. After that I also changed jobs, so I no longer traveled to Rapid City. I tried to quit online, the same way I signed up. Nope, not an option.

I tried to quit by phone,
(PF) -nope you have to come in to quit in person.
(ME) - I explained that I no longer come to Rapid City so that was not an easy option.
(PF) -Too bad, (I was told, and quite rudely.)
(ME) - Is there any other option?
(PF) -The other option is you have to send in a snail mail CERTIFIED letter.
(ME) - Okay I'll do that. What do I need?
(PF) - (Rattles off 10 items of information so quickly that not even the best stenographer could take it down)
(ME) - Could you slow down please?
(PF) - (Huge sigh, and more attitude, lists the 10 things again, including membership number)
(ME) - Okay, give me my membership number.
(PF) - Sorry I can't give you that over the phone. You have to come into the gym to get it.
(ME) - (fuming) I just explained I can't come into PF, I live an hour away.
(PF) - well you can sign online to get it.

So I spend an exorbitant amount of time creating an account to sign on and get my number. Get into my account, click the menu item for "View & Update Information" to access membership information, and it takes you to ANOTHER Sign on screen, and the account information DOES NOT WORK on this screen. So I try to reset my password. Doesn't work, no email received. Try several time. No luck. Sign out of original screen and sign back in, it works. Try to access the membership information again with same results. Try to call the help number, which goes to corporate PF, and they are closed for the day. (Really?) Try to call the gym again to get help accessing the screen, explain to the employee what I need, and lo and behold, she says, "well I can just give you your number" Bless her. But the question remains did the first people I talked to just deny me that information out of spite? Out of ignorance? Was it truly their policy to deny people that information, and I just happened on someone new enough to take pity on me?

My advice - be ABSOLUTELY sure that you want to join this gym before you give them a dime. They throw up barrier after barrier to anyone trying to quit. I will be placing a call to the State Attorney General office just to be sure they are operating within the law. It doesn't seem right to make it so incredibly easy to sign up and so incredibly easy to quit.

I highly recommend a second location on the South side of town to adjust to the growing population of Rapid City, and to fit the travel time of those wanting to go to PF. I think diversity in PF locations will be beneficial. It is often that we have to change our workout routine because it is so busy, and everyone wanting to be at PF due to its affordability. Especially with the black card. There have been times when we have walked out because the only thing that was available was cardio (we lift). The busy meter on the app is not always correct when we check it before we go. The early morning is best, but you need to get your routine started by 4:45 am before the later morning risers come in and it starts to get busier. We are thinking about canceling our membership and pay a little more somewhere else to have a less busier gym with more access to equipment.
They just updated their equipment, which is a huge plus, since their old equipment was always down leaving 1 specific machine to the mass crowd of gym goers. It always seem like it took them weeks to fix the old down machines. The new machines are most definitely updated to fit a more proper form with digital counter and time. I also think their functionalities of putting 2 machines into 1 is a good idea on some since you have the 2 in 1 machine locked in and it doesn't run the risk of someone taking the other machine by the time your done. I know this could happen anywhere, but sometimes it gets so busy you have to get that machine quickly before it is intercepted by the other group of people that also want it. It is often when people do get a machine that we are continuously waiting for a ridiculously amount of time due to those that sit on their cell phone more often then working out. I do not like how they downsized on some of their equipment; however, they did add in some new ones. You should decrease the amount treadmills you have so you can have multiple equipment for every machine for how busy this place gets. The 30 minute workout section was confusing as it was changed to the main floor.
Staff is always polite. The routine gym goers are also polite. I do recommend that the early morning, 4-5am, is the best time. The routine people that come in the mornings are always polite, considerate, and they are there to make the most of their time to workout. It seems to be a different crowd throughout the day. There have been a few times when I was asked "how much longer are you going to be on this machine?" during my rep. I think that is bad gym etiquette and rude to ask that during someone's rep.

Come on PF! Location was nice and well laid out, but your bathrooms are abysmal at best. Your showers are covered in mildew/mold and smell of it too. If you can’t clean then close them!

Showers are cleaned once a week. I've seen the same old, used bandaids in them for a week at a time. Pretty ridiculous that they're open 24hrs on weekdays, but not on weekends. That doesn't make sense on any planet in the universe, especially Planet Fitness.

Note to Corporate PF: Please hold your franchise managers accountable and stop asking members to do so. It's lazy and sad.

Edit: Review No. 3, maybe 4: I want to like this place, but man, they make it hard.

The good news is, they updated the weight equipment. The bad news is that they didn't do a one-to-one replacement. So, instead of, say, two leg curl machines, now there's only one.

As another reviewer noted, they moved all the equipment out of the 30-minute workout room and jammed it into the main floor. Oh, but now THAT section is the 30-minute workout area, so don't think of using any of the equipment differently because it's "monitored regularly," whatever that means.

You'd think with the way they packed the main floor with machines that the place would be short on space. But that's not the case. There's all kinds of room to the right of the doors that's not being used, save for a couple of chairs and a random TV on the wall.

I don't understand the logic of this club at all.

As I said in a previous review, PF just begs off with, "be sure to mention this to the local manager." How would I even know who that is? And I'm sure not going to mention it to the teenagers at the front making minimum wage because they don't care.

Started exercising at this gym 2 weeks ago. A lot of the machines were out of order but they said they were upgrading on June 27. Today, June 28, I went in to find they got rid of most of the machines. The 30 min circuit machines are gone, a lot of other machines are gone, some still don't work. Now everyone that wants to do weights will be fighting for a handful of machines. Decisions like these are made when management wants to close down the store, not when they want more business.

You'd think not having to worry about the tanning beds would mean that the locker rooms would be spotless. 7:03am I walk in and the floors are dirty. I guess there's... other concerns? And I didn't attach photos because I actually follow the rules and don't take them in the locker room.

I was assaulted on Tuesday and there was an employee and fellow gym member that seen it and I brought it to the management and all I got was “if it happens again let us know”. I don’t understand, I don’t know if it wasn’t taken seriously because I’m a man assaulted by a woman? I don’t know but it’s not acceptable to me. An employee and a fellow gym member seeing the assault happen and me getting hit in the head 2-3 times and it wasn’t taken seriously. All I was told to do was file a police report and or wait until it happens again. Why would I have to wait for it to happen again for management to do anything about it? I was told “it didn’t look threatening” I don’t know how me getting jumped on from the back and hit 2-3 times in the head is considered a non threat.
