This used to be my favorite location in the Knoxville area. However, upkeep has dropped dramatically in the past couple of years.

First, there are major moisture issues in the pool area. The musty mildew/mold smell hits me in the face as soon as I walk in the front entrance to the gym…even in the entryway between the two set of doors.

The walls in the pool have visible mineral buildup, indicating a major moisture problem. Ladders, the lift chair and rails has major buildup and rust. One of the hot tubs has turned brown. There’s green growing on the pool deck along the drain lines. The kick boards and pool noodles are old and really spongy and dirty.

I feel like I could get Legionnaires' disease by even being in the pool area.

The showers are also awful. Shower heads are in such bad shape that fine sharp jets of water spew out in every direction except where your body is.

The upkeep is really disappointing and I now go out of my way to go to less convenient locations, especially if I want to swim.

I only go here bc my insurance pays for it, and they have the pool. The pool is grimy but at least the water is clean. The only thing that works all the time is the sauna bc a lot of weight lifters use it. The small therapy pool is warm most of time but isn't clean as well. So I wouldn't give this place any money.

The Manger, Kaleb comes across as rude and uncaring. Doesn't know a member who's been giving him money for years. The gym is disgusting and has outdated equipment. I'll take and add pictures as soon as I can for proof but if you just do a walk through you'd be able to see how terrible this gym is, the wildest thing is, is what Kaleb wants for membership fees for the trash he provides. The manager doesnt care about his members, he only cares if the check clears. Dudes as fake as it gets. Save your money and go to a better gym that's cheaper. Or at least dont give your money to the manager, he doesn't deserve your business.

I've been a member there for over 5 years. I recently added my children to my account, I at first thought it was 32.99 a month, which for that place is a stretch but for ease sure. When I reread it and found out that was for every two weeks I was offended. The equipment is out of date and the ropes for the triceps have always been frayed and for the amount they charge for membership what they provide is a joke. The locker rooms a disaster, a soap dispenser has been broken for months, they just took the top off to dip your fingers in, I'm sure that's correct lol. It was my mistake that I let them take 30 from me for so long, that's just careless on my part and lesson learned the hard way but learned all the same. But to pay 70 a month for that place, absolutely not. Oh and the manger will call you brother like we go way back but treat you like a stranger. Leaving that place today felt like the best decision ive made in a while. I've already found a cleaner gym with newer equipment for less than golds. I just never looked around for convenience, thank you golds gym for giving me a reason to choose better for myself.

On December 20th, 2024, my locked gym bag was stolen from a locked locker at Gold’s Gym – Oak Ridge. It contained my wallet with personal documents, car and apartment keys, and training equipment.

The person responsible was reportedly already known to the gym due to previous thefts in Knoxville. So why was he allowed in without any screening? What’s the point of having a membership card if anyone can enter?

The gym never contacted me or followed up to help clarify what happened. I was left to deal with everything alone. Extremely disappointing experience.

Do NOT trust this gym with your card, your signature, or your time.

When I first signed up, a trainer sat me down for what I thought was a standard intro session. I agreed to do the free personal training session that came with my membership. I signed a form to confirm that—but what I didn’t realize is that the trainer later doctored that very document to claim I’d agreed to $1800 worth of personal training sessions.

I never received a single session, not even the free one. The trainer bailed on our appointment and ghosted me entirely. Yet despite my repeated attempts to talk to someone in charge—multiple visits asking to speak with management—I was brushed off every time with, “no one here can help” or “the manager’s not in.” Meanwhile, I kept my card info off file on purpose to avoid being charged for services I never agreed to. Staff at the front desk even warned me that if I updated my payment method, the system might automatically charge me the full personal training amount.

Eventually I got a hold of the trainer—he promised to “take care of it.” Spoiler: he didn’t.

Fast-forward to now: after months of being harassed over “overdue” payments, I finally reach a new manager. She tells me that the trainer has since been fired (shocking), and that my account only shows $25 in unpaid dues—but now also includes $85 in late fees. She says she’ll try to help. I show up in person again. Suddenly, “there’s nothing we can do.”

On top of that, they try to bill me for a 30-minute personal training session. Again—never happened. Not once.

I canceled my membership on the spot.

Here’s the bottom line: This gym allowed fraudulent charges to sit on my account for months, ignored every opportunity to correct it, and showed zero accountability. I’ve never written a negative review like this in my life, but this one earned it.

If you value transparency, professionalism, and basic customer service—look elsewhere. This place failed on every level.

DO NOT SIGN UP for PERSONAL TRAINING. I was told there would be no contract or termination fee and that was not what happened. I was unknowingly signed up for 11 sessions with an early cancelation fee of $388.80. Sessions were never on time and I never received an exercise plan as promised. They make it extremely difficult to cancel, all of my calls were never returned. This has been the worst and most dishonest place I've ever dealt with. From another review, I see I'm not the only person who was swindled in this way.

My girlfriend got her and I a membership. I never got to step foot in this gym, but I was charged $440 on top of the membership fees when the very next month came due. Initial sign-up came with a complimentary session with a personal trainer, so my girlfriend scheduled her free session. She drove a half hour for the session only to find that the personal trainer had a class to teach, conflicting with her one on one session. No big deal. They talked routines, planned to reschedule the COMPLIMENTARY session , and that was that. She never followed up to claim the free session, as work and life got busy. When the fees came due for the second month…$440 charge for the personal trainer. Not only did she not use a personal trainer, she didn’t even get the “Free” session. She called about the charge, was told they would refund the charge, and the personal trainer even corroborated the fact she didn’t sign up for anything. Refund never showed up and now the Manager of this location is refusing to refund the money because he says she signed something so the charge stands instead of doing the right thing. They cannot provide a detailed invoice stating what the charges are exactly for and completely aware that she never signed up…he won’t refund the charge. If that isn’t Fraud, someone please provide me with a better example. Let’s not gloss over the fact that neither one of was got a single workout in. It’s obvious that they’re used to dealing in legalities with no consideration of what’s right or wrong. In short, they’re aware their business model is screwing people out of money.

My work place signed up for a business plan with Golds gym, so while I have a PF membership I decided to still get one for Golds. Michael was very nice at the nutrition meeting & showed me machines to use for my workout needs. I did see the cleanliness issue that a lot of customers talk about on here and outdated machines. The childcare room is big and it does look clean! We will be trying this out soon as childcare is a large plus side to keep people at this gym. I think if machines are updated and the place is deep cleaned the reviews will def go up ⬆️

As others have mentioned, the staff members are very kind and do their best to support members.
Tonight, 2/2/2025, between 6:15 pm and 6:30 pm, someone broke my lock off my locker in the men's locker room. Luckily, they don't read and were probably just looking for wallets, as they didn't take my kindle or any workout equipment. I only lost my master lock that is gone and surely broken. Do not leave ANYTHING of value in your locker, as the staff seemingly cannot do anything about destruction of property or theft. Outside of the attempted theft, the gym is dirty and many pieces of equipment are broken or in disrepair. Best to spend your money elsewhere.

I will first say, the workers are super sweet and this is not their fault.
BUT clearly, this organization is going downhill… I really liked the people here but since I had to start using showers / facilities before classes at night - I couldn’t keep my membership. There’s black mold all over the women’s bathroom, showers out of order, equipment always down and out of order. You get what you pay for (or less) in this gym lol. Hate to see it but I’m glad armor opened up close by.

Legitimately one of the most poorly constructed companies I've ever seen. I had an overdue account that I was not able to log in to because requesting a password reset did nothing. Calling the gym did not work as all the lines have been down. Only after a second email was I able to get a response (the person who responded was nice and helpful, thankfully) and was finally able to reset my password. Logged in, and tried paying the balance on my account only for the website to freeze each time I tried. Now my account is at risk of being sent to collections because their website won't work.

Thanks Gold's Gym, your astonishing lack of basic infrastructure amazes me.

Save yourself the time and effort by going to Planet Fitness next door, this company truly and utterly sucks.

Edit: The place has gone downhill. Poor communication on closures, equipment is breaking and not getting fixed, and sinks/lockers/toilets are all breaking in the bathroom without getting fixed. If anyone has a microbiology interest, you can collect some samples from pretty much every corner. I came to work out during normal business hours to find that they were closed and ended up taking a phone call in the parking lot. In the 15 minutes I sat there, 9 different cars pulled up to see if they were open. Just in case you were wondering if the poor communication about closures was my issue alone.

I pay 28 bucks a month after my veteran's discount. I get my money's worth, kind of.
Treadmills all work with loose belts, some showers have shower heads, soap is sometimes filled, pool is clean and somewhat warm, water fountains are cold and often work, sauna is hot but the steam room is used for storage, and the staff are excited to get their own work outs in. I get what I need/want out of this place for sure, but manage your expectations.

To preface I have been on and off with this particular Golds gym since 2016. Around 2022 I switched gyms. This review is for the entire time I've used the gym and my experience of visiting after a year or 2 to see if I wanted to renew my membership.
Originally this gym was a 3/5. The equipment isn't the best. It's old and heavily used. Regularly broken. Within the last 3 years they have gotten a few new freeweight racks and a couple other pieces. From 2016-2021 they may have gotten 1 or 2 new pieces. The locker rooms are the most sad thing. Doors falling off. Mold everywhere. Toilets out of order for months. The smell is awful. Everything is old and dirty. At best it was a gym to go lift and leave. It served that purpose well. Cheap and tolerable.
My recent visit was laughable. I decided to take my girlfriend and show her the gym as it's the closest to my house and we were considering a membership together. I was immediately presented with a 25 dollar day pass fee per person. Laughable. Armor gym a few miles down the road has the nicest facility around and they are still at 15 dollar day passes. The equipment was exactly the same. Locker rooms the exact same. A total of 7 machines were broken and unmarked. I noticed 1 new piece of equipment. Absolutely ridiculous. Just my nearly 10 year ride with this Golds. When Armor Gym opens I hope this greedy gross Golds either remodels or closes.

This gym deserves 0 stars, but that is not an option. STAY AWAY!!! Their membership practices are deceptive and dishonest. My husband and I joined. Of course they try to sell you on having a trainer. My gut told me not to trust them and I was right. Unfortunately, my husband thought they had an interest in him and they scammed him to signing something that was different than what they told him. He is now having to seek legal representation. BEWARE they are thieves!!!

In recent years past, Gold's gym would send out "medallion surveys" to members at 2 or 3 different times per year. Now the "surveys" take members directly to Google to post a review. On my last review in Google, I pointed out all the black TV screens where channels are available but are not being utilized. The next day, most of the TV screens began to show content. The swimming pool water temp feels great at 84 degrees. However, as the days grow colder, the pool area air temp will drop to the point that people feel comfortable wearing jackets in the pool area. At that point, heat from the pool will rise out of the water, and the water temp will drop to 82 or lower. So Eddie, the maintenance supervisor, needs to check the air temperature and also check with the swimmers as winter approaches. A few days ago, a 6'3" construction worker-member of Gold's tried to turn on the air blowers attached to the wall. He punched the on button with the side of his fist 8 or 9 times. The air blower did not come on. People like that are rude and inconsiderate of other members who will want to use the air blower to dry their hair. Gold's staff keeps making excuses for these kinds of people -- very inconsiderate, banging equipment, say profanities on political topics in the crowded locker in a loud voice to offend as many people as possible, etc. They need to be kicked out of the gym. Contrary to Gold's staff beliefs, the First Amendment does not apply to private property and private gyms. People are entitled to their own beliefs, but they also must show restraint in public settings in trying to inflict their beliefs onto others, who might object vehemently to their ignorant and caustic beliefs.

The central hvac NEVER works. They also need to pay their employees more money & hire individuals who are capable of maintaining the cleanliness & equipment. The women's facilities are disgusting. I only gave it 2 stars because of the staff that are forced to work in these conditions. Why they cannot go to an automated door so this place could be 24 hr i have no idea. This morning no one decided to show up to unlock the gym so about 30 people all just had to wait until someone showed up around 525....There are a lot of machines, but if something needs maintenance it doesn't happen. The locker room is cleaner than it was at Max Out Gym, that closed a few months ago, but not by much. Also opening at 5am only works for the short term as hours at work will go back to an earlier start time by January time frame. When that happens ill have to buy my own weights and workout at home.......this place would be perfect if they would just go to a keyless entry so people could workout 24/7....

Friendly, helpful staff. However the equipment is old amd needs to be replaced, they need new benches and the landlord doesn't maintain the building at all. It's like the gym owners don't care about this gym and the equipment and the landlord doesn't care about the building. It's disgrace on both parties and they both should be ashamed. I chose this gym because it's easy and quick for me to drop in after work and have a good workout. I am seriously thinking I am better off fighting traffic to go to a game that's better maintained and where owners actually give a damn about their facilities.

The Jacuzzi was drained with sign stating needed repairs - but it looked disgusting. There are 7 showers and only 1 worked, mold all over, tiles missing, shower heads missing. I canceled my membership this evening (4/2/24) and when asked why all I could blurt out was “I hate it here.” Truth be told there’s a few reasons I canceled, but my absolute number one is because the equipment is always broken in some way, shape, or form; and it’s filthy… like in the restrooms, etc. So top two reasons, not one. I hope this gym can get back to its former “glory”, as I wish them nothing but success.

I called Saturday before Easter to confirm a 7 a.m. Sunday opening time that the website states for opening Gold's gym. No answer!
I went back to the website to reconfirm a 7 a.m. opening time for Gold's gym in Oak Ridge.
Yes, open at 7 a.m. Sunday morning.
I drive to the gym at 8:30 to find a note on the door that we will be opening at 12, due to our employees need to celebrate Easter. One employee? Gold's needs to decide, are we going to manage the gym using technology that's up to date, or we going to hang a sign on the door like it's 1984.

Kaleb runs an excellent Gold's Gym. I brought down some rowers from DC and the weather was dank. Kaleb set us up with a day plan for the boys to get in a lift. The machines and free weights are in good shape and the bike room was a good spot to warm up. Gold's for the win!

This place has really been going downhill. It used to be great and now it needs some maintenance. There was sand in the hot tub. The pool area looked like it is starting to deteriorate. The sauna had a sign that said it was closed for cleaning though we didn't see anyone cleaning it and the steam room looked like it's used for storage. I hope they will make the necessary improvements to make it as good as it used to be if not better.

I am working with my physical therapist to put together a program that meshes the therapist program with Gold’s Gym equipment. The program has been very successful and we both are pleased with the results.

If I could give this business a ZERO star, I would. I have been a member for about 5 years. I joined because I was training for triathlons and you all have a swimming pool. I went back in today after having been out for over a year and this place was absolutely disgusting! I was so dissapointed in a place that once held itself to very high standards. I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone! It was so bad that after working out I immediately went to a competitor down the street, toured their facility and joined, went back to Gold's Gym and stopped being a member. I went to work out for the first time in eons at the Gold’s Gym in Oak Ridge. I know they take a yearly fee of $49 for maintenence but what the heck are they doing with it??? What is this fee they take out every year to maintain equipment actually going for? This place was so nasty. This is uncalled for and I probably will contact corporate about their facility. There is mold and mildew all in the shower, a lot of hair all over the shower. The restrooms nor the shower room looks like it has been cleaned in ages! One showerhead was spewing water all over the place, there was mold and mildew on the ceiling, on the tiles beside you, below you and above you. Ther was so much mold and meldew on the floor where you dry your hair. NASTY!! Multiple light were out. Trash cans were over flowing No paper towels. I never count on the soap there, but they had put gallon jugs all along the counters and in the showers. Good luck in getting it out! The equipment was ripped as you can see in the pictures on the padding. There was rust everywhere on the machines. What is my maintenance fee going to every year?! I also always always always take flip-flops to take a shower. I don’t want to get warts and I don’t wanna get athletes foot. You’re going to get that here or worse!! I will say their swimming pool actually looked half decent that was the only thing. But they have went WAY WAY WAY down hill! I cannot recommend this gym to anyone and will tell them to run the other way! I am tempted to contact the Anderson County Health Department as well because of all the mold and mildew in the bathroom and locker facilities.

Locker rooms and bathrooms could use a bit more frequent cleaning and some maintenance. For example, the left toilet stall in the men’s room has a stall door with jagged metal exposed that could cut somebody. I’m aware of it, so it’s never happened to me. The other thing that would help is to periodically clear out abandoned clothes left sitting in lockers for multiple days or left sitting on counter tops. I would suggest move them to lost and found for a while.

They try to milk every dime out of you when you cancel your membership. They advertised the month-to-month to me as if you could cancel anytime but have to pay a monthly premium for that privilege which I was willing to pay for the convenience. Go to cancel, they said that would be $26 plus $40 cancellation fee. The $26 for the next two week period and the $40 cancellation fee, well they just pulled that out of air, never read that anywhere. Then Lucas Gleaves sent me an email threatening collections when I told his workers that I would not pay. The workers I talked to at the gym, lied to Lucas and said I called them scammers. I did not. I said, "This seems like a scam." and asked them "Does this seem right?" They actually never said yes or no they just said it was policy. P.S. I waited at the counter to cancel for 15minutes before somebody came and spoke with me. The GM was on the treadmill for that 15minutes before he came and spoke with me. The dude just worked out why I waited. No customer service. And now I will say it, they try to scam money from you when you cancel. Buyer Beware. Also, the facilities are dirty and the roof is caving in the aerobic area.

Consistently Dirty.

Sauna is never clean, the walls and benches are all stained with the sweat of years of other gym goes. The sauna benches have exposed metal screw and nail heads that heat up to the point of injury. The sauna floor is tile but only extends to the where the benches begin, this means that even with a broom or mop, there is a is a lip under the benches that catches the dirt and debris and prevents its from being cleaned properly. There are old water bottles, caps, used rags and paper towels along with gum and dirt built up to an unsanitary level. The drain in the center of the floor is so clogged with dirt that it’s almost level with the tile around it. I could go on about the bathrooms, locker rooms the gym floor and mirrors but overall I keep going back because it’s the only option other than “no lunk lame lift” down the street.

The gym was clean, the staff was friendly and greeted me when I came in and wished me a great day when I left and the GM Kaleb was interacting with gym members, looked very healthy and in great shape himself and was very nice and seemed very genuine! The sauna was actually hot! So often they are NOT hot, just annoyingly very warm and I don’t have all day to waste trying to get a hot relaxing sweat going after a good workout. My only complaint would be it seems a little old in there, it could use some updates- not the equipment, it’s good, just the gym itself

Place needs a massive deep clean. Especially in the men’s restrooms. Every morning the toilets are un flushed and full. The gym its self is great love lifting here, great equipment. The group that owns this golds also owns every other golds in TN and it’s a shame they have neglected this one for so long.

This gym used to be the best Gold's in the Knoxville area. Now, everything is really dirty, broken, and the sweat hasn't been wiped off in so long that the machines are rusting from it. The elliptical machines all literally have grass and mud all over them. I only come here to do Olympic lifts, otherwise I go to other cleaner gyms around.

The whole place is really dirty. The showers in the women's locker room are all broken and gross. The steam room does not work. The hot tub is filled with bubbles. The elliptical machines are filthy and falling apart. The back room for classes has no A.C. I used to love coming here, but the last 2 years things have gone down hill drastically. If PF had free weights and a pool I'd never step foot in this golds again. The one in Lenoir City is clean/staffed properly...it's night and day 🤷
