I stopped by because I was thinking about joining, but now I'm looking into other options. The staff was very kind, but it kinda felt like pulling teeth to get any details. They did answer the questions I asked but they didn't really volunteer any membership information or information about the facilities. It seemed very odd that they did not volunteer an overview when I said I was thinking about joining and that they did not show me around or even talk about the facilities. Maybe this is normal for the YMCA, but any other gym I've been a member of made sure to make you feel welcome when you show up, especially if you aren't a member yet.

Place is a joke. In town for a family emergency just wanted to drop in for literally 2-3 days. No day passes but have to pay a $70 for the month. Do not come here!

I thoroughly enjoy this facility and location. Outdoor workout center, pool, sauna/steam room, showers, multiple workout rooms, and they updated their equipment recently. Friendly staff. Lots of parking. Happy here. I do think they can add maybe some carpet or water resistant fabric since the steps to the locker rooms are sometimes wet due to swimmers leaving the pool. Could be hazardous. Otherwise, it’s a good spot especially if you like to play basketball. Haven’t tried their classes yet, but am looking forward to it.

Nothing ever works. If your come for the amenities they are almost always not working. Sometimes because something is wrong with it but frequently because someone doesn’t know how to turn it on. As an owner of a gym if my facility is down and I cannot offer the agreed upon services I also can’t charge clients. They should be able to pause and account if the facility that the customer uses is down for an entire month.

Hate to say but the Y just always has to find ways to mess up good things. They’ve had two saunas and a steam room on the pool deck for a while now, after getting rid of separate gender saunas (ridiculous).

Well, now they’ve gotten rid of the sauna for a 2nd steam room, which will hardly be used at all. Most enjoy dry heat over steam and the setup they had was perfect. Now the 1 sauna is packed like sardines just like Brentwood. Uncomfortable and not relaxing.

Further, the community locker room is not sanitary, and not the fault of the custodians but the members. Also, they got rid of the unisex bathrooms and created new men’s restrooms on the other side of the wall and built them with no urninals and no automatic flushers, so the those new men’s restrooms are beyond disgusting.

STOP RUINING GOOD THINGS!!! LEAVE THINGS ALONE!!!! YOU MESS UP WHEN YOU MAKE CHANGES!!!!!

I visited on Wednesday May 21st around 8:30am and was in shock when I was told they do not offer day passes and I could not use the gym unless I came as a member’s guest.

I travel very often for work and have used gyms all across the country when I am away from home. Including many YMCAs and I am actually in a YMCA in North Dakota right now where I just purchased a day pass.

It is surprising that an organization that values physical health and wellness would not consider it important for those who have to travel away from their home gyms but want to stay active while away from home. Disappointing policy and thankful for QNTM in town where I was able to buy a day pass and get my workout in.

This place has roaches. On four occasions I’ve encountered roaches in this YMCA and let the staff know and it seems the front lobby staff simply do not care which is insane!! I guess they won’t care until they take one of the roaches home with them or better yet a member does. I know it’s a public place full of sweat and moisture, but come on, this is ridiculous that a YMCA in one of the most affluent zip codes in middle TN has roaches. It’s really a shame. In fact, this is the dirtiest YMCA in middle TN.

Wow the front desk person is rude. I was just planning on working out with a friend who has a membership and between policies, hostile attitudes, and lack of care gives this a 2 star from me. We ended up leaving and NOT working out because of our experience. I would have been interested in signing up for the Y but this location really turned me off to the idea. Disappointed by Overcrowding and Safety Concerns

I had high hopes for the Hillsboro YMCA, but my experience has been disappointing due to serious overcrowding and safety issues that have yet to be properly addressed.

The gym is often packed, making it difficult to use equipment efficiently. However, my biggest concern is the lack of organization and safety enforcement—particularly with people stretching on mats in random, high-traffic areas, creating clear tripping hazards. This not only makes navigating the space challenging but also poses real risks for injuries.

I attempted to bring up my concerns with the staff, but unfortunately, they did not take my feedback seriously. Instead of addressing the safety risks I highlighted, I later received a call ( On a Private Number ) from the assistant executive director—not to discuss these legitimate safety issues, but to respond to a separate comment I made about overcapacity and demographics. This was frustrating, as it felt like my actual concerns were ignored.

A gym should be a place where people can work out safely and comfortably, and that starts with effective crowd management and clear safety policies. I sincerely hope that the Hillsboro YMCA takes steps to prioritize member safety, enforce better gym etiquette, and improve communication with concerned members. Until then, I cannot recommend this location to those who value a well-managed and safe fitness facility.

Most of my experience here has been good, the facilities are clean, lots of machines, and good instructors. I have 2 complaints too many people hog the machines when its busy, and just sit on their phones. The second is they have too many teenagers as life guards with no common sense. Some are wonderful, but overall my 12 year old is more mature than some of them. Please teach your lifeguards people skills, people go to the Y, to relax, not to educate children.
Management is very good at applozing for their staff, and are very helpful, I feel sorry for them.

This used to be a much better gym in my opinion, and with a substantial increase every single year in membership fees (another 13.5% increase in January) there are some improvements I feel that should be made. They made it "prettier" with the renovation, but it is just not as functional as it used to be. **The staff is great however.

-need mirrors in between squat racks. no way to check your form/depth and you have to either alternate with the person across from you or squat face to face with another person and is just weird
-need more open space indoors for mat exercises/pull ups/free weight exercises inside. the indoor turf area is honestly kinda dangerous for mat exercises but is one of the few places available to do this-watched a guy squatting 300 +lb in the rack stumble/nearly fall backwards onto the people on the floor behind him.
-I think more open space would help "traffic" flow at peak times as well, and removing the giant signs in the middle of the walkways.
-the big "family" locker room is basically a boys locker room with guys walking around in just towels. (this was just a bad idea)

I hate that we are having to look elsewhere for a gym since we've been members here for a long time, but increasing membership fees every single year to fund a less functional gym is not worth it. Seems like the YMCA is getting greedy.

We love the swim classes, the yplay, and the workout facilities at this ymca location. The “family locker room” design, however, is horrible. The ymca should consider suing their architect/designer over the completely dysfunctional space. There is only one toilet stall (the others are in shower rooms that are always occupied), which means children frequently have accidents while waiting for the potty. The floor isn’t built right and there is standing dirty water all over the place. Paint on the walls and ceiling is already starting to peel from moisture after just a few years. Also, since the construction of this new space, there are no more saunas separated by gender, which effectively excludes large numbers of women with religious modesty convictions. There’s also no nursing space when the yplay is closed. The old family locker rooms were so much better, and served us well for 30 years. I don’t understand the change.

It’s great unless you run into the YMCA police enforcement, known as Nikki. When I started coming here I asked if we could stretch without shoes in the separate green grass area and was told unless you’re using weights, then yes. I’m here everyday and see women and men there without shoes. But when I did it Nikki comes out of nowhere with her walkie talkie to tell me I’m breaking the rules. Even when I told her the staff said it was allowed she condescendingly told me “Well you should see the signs that say you can’t.” No Nikki, I’m not looking around for random signs when I’ve already spoken to staff. I’m here to workout and stretch. I’m glad she enjoys her job of enforcing policies that apparently the other staff don’t know about. The other staff members are great though.

I have been a member of the middle Tennessee YMCA for over 10 years now. The Green Hills location has always been by far my favorite location. It has plenty of equipment to exercise on. There's never any wait to use a certain machine. Also there's plenty of exercise classes for all ages and abilities. Whether you're just starting at the gym or your very physically fit there's something for everyone.

As other members have commented, this used to be literally the best gym/workout facility in middle Tn. It wasn’t even close. It WAS Excellent.

The new remodel is actually a significant step backwards.

What have they added?

1.They have added a stair case and family locker with open viewing class walls.
2. More cardio equipment.

Downgrades

The old cross fit room was big and spacious the new is tiny and cramped.

They haven’t added anything new that upgrades the members experience for working out.

Additionally the lighting and color scheme is like that of mental hospital.

And finally as so many people have pointed out the coup de grace to Green Hill YMCA was moving the sauna out the locker rooms and into the pool area.

What a shame. It was what so many members came for alone. It was a great experience and first class sauna.

The new sauna is really just a joke, the construction is laughable. It’s worse then shoddily built.

Green Hills Ymca had a opportunity to really reassert themselves as the best gym and ymca in middle Tn, but they butchered it to be honest.

I have been a member for a few years now. I have become very frustrated with the sauna situation and rhetoric that comes along with it. Management has said that saunas were moved to the pool area for more supervision and attention. This is alarming because they tend to be dirty, smelly and overcrowded. I have witnessed the closing lifeguards clean the sauna by dumping a bucket of pool water in it. The dismissive fashion in which the employees close the amenities is appalling. They do not seem to realize that the aquatic amenities are the only thing that separate most of the locations from planet fitness. Several women of varying cultures have had to refrain from using these amenities due to them being co-ed. So let’s just be honest. Moving the sauna/steam/whirlpool to the public spaces was a poor solution to a very homophobic issue. And to add insult to injury, we still have to see these areas that were once utilized in the locker rooms cluttered with miscellaneous supplies.

I’ve been coming to this ymca for my whole life and love it. I’ve been out of the state for the past year and a half and I get back to the new renovation. I realize there are many diverse users and needs for the y, but for me, the renovation has been a serious downgrade. Way less open workout space in the downstairs CrossFit area (always packed with no room). There are way fewer cable machines, which are some of the most sought after machines. And then for the sauna.

The new sauna makes me furious. The experience when it was in the men’s locker room was perfect. Private, next to the showers, spacious, and hot. Now you have to deal with people walking by looking in, kids running by screaming (not relaxing), and it is wayyy too small. If it was always full before with half of the users then who in their right mind thought it was a good idea to make it half the size with more than twice the intended users. It was in the ADULT locker room. I’m told the reasoning for moving was for lifeguard supervision. You are infantilizing your users by requiring them to be watched by a 17 year old y employee. Then there’s the simple logistical issue of having to walk downstairs shirtless past all kinds of people and then to have to walk back upstairs soaking wet (unsafe and unpleasant).

We’re all sweating on each other in there. It smells like an armpit. It’s also full of sweaty, shirtless men. What woman is going to want to use that?? You’ve essentially gotten rid of the women’s facilities and made the men’s facilities downright unpleasant to use. Also the steam room is poorly built. It sprays steam out right behind your legs, burning your calves. The wants and needs of your users should matter more than the desire to impose your will over fear of liability based on a couple of ADULTS unable to take care of themselves.

Personal Trainer Jennifer at Green Hills YMCA is professional, friendly, and understands the importance of knowing her clients and customizing a strengthening plan to suit their needs/limitations. She is focused on form and preventing injury, all while getting results! I would recommend her for beginners as well as experienced clients looking to challenge their workouts!

It’s Nashville. Rains all the time. They close the dang sauna when lighting is spotted EIGHT MILES AWAY. Let’s maybe move the saunas away from the pool? Might actually get to have them open for once. Otherwise this is a nice place.

I had checked to see when the outdoor pool would close. I was told that it would be open daily until after Labor Day. I went today and it was closed as they didn’t have a lifeguard. Very disappointing and annoying. Someone failed to do their job! Supervisors know way ahead of time that college and high school lifeguards are not going to be available as schools have started back
so they should have made other arrangements.( 2022)

Well, here we go again. Whoever makes decisions regarding The Green Hills Y outdoor pool failed again to arrange for lifeguards in August, 2023 Seniors want to enjoy the outdoor pool quietly while the kids are in school in August. I know this pool closes for the season after Labor Day. At least arrange to stay open till 12:00 noon during August for public swim. Instead they are opening at 3:00 pm when it will be full of kids and definitely not be quiet. ( 2023)

We love the Y! They have an amazing childcare center and tons of great exercise classes. The rate is very reasonable for all the amenities that we receive.
