I love the unique throwback atmosphere of this YMCA. The building is teeming with character which I can not say about any other gym I have visited. It is defiantly worth visiting at least once.

The equipment is nice, and the sauna is nice, however the level of cleanliness is concerning. More specifically the locker rooms feel as tho they are never cleaned. the showers often have trash in/around them, the sauna often has a puddle of mysterious brown liquid in the middle of it, and the floors look as tho they have never seen a mop/vacuum.

I love this! Y... Very very clean facility, well organized. Very friendly people and staff. I will definitely go back. I appreciate having the membership director take me on a guided tour around the facility. Everything is so clean and well organized. Plus the history of the building is absolutely amazing. Thank you for all you do.

Not the nicest equipment but it gets the job done for a downtown gym. My main gripe is they got rid of the towel service back when COVID hit but never restored it which is a huge pain and seems a little ridiculous. Only gym I've been to outside of COVID that didn't offer towel service.

I worked out here during my 2.5 years in Knoxville and loved it. Little bit of an older looking gym but it has all the equipment you need, including my fav the basketball courts. One of the few gyms with a steam room. The staff are very friendly and foster a welcoming environment for everyone working out. Little pricey but worth it if you work out consistently. I highly recommend.

My wife was not a swimmer. We are members at this YMCA, and after having private swimming lessons at other places in the area we met Frank here at this YMCA. She took lessons earlier but was still not confident in the water. Frank is the swimming teacher here at this Y. With the help of Chris, she got us scheduled for swim lessons with Frank and after 4 lessons had my wife swimming and confident in the water. Frank teaches swim teams, and he has tremendous skills teaching anyone how to swim. We are so grateful to Chris for getting us in the schedule and to Frank for teaching my wife such an important life lesson. Frank's the best!!

I've been a member for a year and surveyed the YMCA's all over knoxville. The first time I went to this one was 20 years ago, and the pool is exactly the same--dated and short. However, it is one of only two Y's in town with a dry and steam sauna, the other being the Tennnova up north. The facility may not be new, but it has a great deal of character (especially the yoga space which is great for mobility workouts!), and the folks working there are very nice. If you like a towel for your shower or sauna, you must bring your own, or buy one of theirs for a few dollars. Tennova north has a brand new facility and tower service, which is nice, but they are way out in Powell, so not always as convenient. A perfectly well run and clean facility.

Overall, this is a pretty good gym. It definitely does not have the newest, most state-of-the-art equipment, but it has enough to get a high-quality workout in. All of the staff I have encountered are extremely nice and helpful; they greet and welcome you as you walk in. Even though the building is very old, the interior is cleaner than you would probably expect. The layout is a bit awkward, as others have mentioned. My main complaint would be that the gym constantly feels like it is over 76Β°.. you pretty much start sweating as soon as you get moving.

This place is strange it doesnβt have a good flow to it. It has a quiet awkward vibe. Alot of equipment is outdated and looks dirty, I keep having to switch floors for different things and why you guys donβt have a lock on that childcare door I donβt know. Iβve seen multiple kids trying to escape while that poor babysitter struggles. So dangerous and unnecessary. It doesnβt feel modern or inspiring inside like la fitness or other gyms I go to. It feels like a gym for old guys. But youβre the ONLY one around who had kid care soooooβ¦. Maybe you guys are low on money thatβs my assumption

The building is very old BUT, it is so clean, they have everything you need to workout any way you want. They have an attentive staff and are always so friendly! Also, they have an amazing massage therapist there, ask for Sandra Corbitt's information and schedule a post workout massage...you will not be disappointed!

Exercising at the Downtown YMCA is like stepping into a piece of living history. The building is one of Knoxvilleβs finest examples of early twentieth century architecture, exhibiting a peculiar Mediterranean Revival in Appalachia. Since its completion in 1929 the facility has undergone extensive renovations and today provides all of the exercise equipment youβd expect at your local Y. The basement pool, in particular, is a must-see as its 20 yard length predates the standardization of competitive swimming pools. Whether by design or accident, the subway tiles and regular columns closely emulate the environment of 1930s-era subway stations in New York City (but, of course, without the rats).

I had a membership for over a yr & didn't use it, whn I finally decided to go I found out tht my senior discount was not gonna be good after Dec 31st. I wish I had gone whn i first signed up, it's a wonderful place it's clean, friendly & full of all kinds of exercise equipment! I was shown how to properly use the equipment, the staff was eager to help me in anyway they cld. There's so much to do here from swimming weight lifting yoga etc. If you get a chance go, it's conveniently located near my home too. π

Staff is super friendly and helpful. The equipment is kept updated and in tip top condition, and the classes and programs offer something for everyone. The historic building is great, however it does offer challenges in getting around the building if you're mobility-limited. Ample parking available in the lot or across the street at the garage, which is cheap during week days and free on evenings and weekends.

I really wish Knoxville had a newer, much nicer YMCA. This one is VERY old (ie from the 1920s) and it does not have half the amenities other YMCAs have. The locker rooms also reek horribly from the decades of mold and foul odors which have built up. Some people like the old charm of the place, but I personally don't.
I was in Chattanooga last week, and I was blown away by how much nicer theirs is compared to this one. The day pass admission fee here is $7 vs $10 at the Chattanooga one, but with how much the ladder offers I would happily pay more for a drastically better YMCA any day!

Love the location and the classes offered But the womenβs sauna SUCKS. It NEVER WORKS (HARDLY EVER) and the staff have NO clue how to work the control panel and for some reason they wonβt get it fixed. Itβs very frustrating because thatβs basically the only reason why that particular location stands out from the others. π

Got a discount membership through my school and went one time. This is because the men's locker room has one of the worst odors I've ever smelt in my life. It just radiated with an odor I can only describe as a strong mix of cat urine and soured out towels that someone attempted to cover up with a gallon of AXE body spray. Literally had to hold my breath and my nose to go in there. Grossest gym I've ever been to.

Dont know why on earth its getting government funding. It is very very expensive 55 a month and getting government fumding when it is nothing but a gym. Even people who are destitute with nothing have to pay abou 20 a month. This is ridiculous. It started out as a christian organization but there is nothi g christian about it now

This is my go to gym for lunch work outs. The facility is a bit dated - it has a 20 yard pool ?!?! Parking is a pain if you don't work or live downtown. However, this YMCA knows it's members, and the classes are quite good and tailored to working professionals' schedule. It is the only YMCA in Knoxville with towel service.

The downtown Y has a LOT of options! They have four stories of classrooms, exercise machines, and offices. They also have a daycare room, a beautiful open seating area with a TV and piano, and a chiropractor in the building. It's a beautiful building, as well. I've only been going here for a few weeks, but it already feels like a second home.

If your looking for more than just a bunch of know it alls like "golds" or some lame excuse to call interval training "cross training" THIS YMCA BLOWS EVERY GYM OUT...INCLUDING THAT SO CALLED NATIONAL FITNESS EXCUSE FOR A COMPANY. The Lyndsay Young Downtown YMCA has free weights, ( actual eleinko plates), machines, Olympic weight lifting room in the ATTIC, basketball for real ballers, a lap pool, great classes, sauna, racquet ball, etc. Family atmosphere with a piano and and pool table and some wii games to check out while you wait. Don't forget the location DOWNTOWN...

I was along time user of Y, but recently had a bad encounter with one of the male counselors who threatened to meet me after work if I didn't obey his bullying tactics. He was supported by the Ceo without even contacting me, they took my membership without cause. The facilities are antiquated and you have to pay to have facilities fixed more than membership. I would suggest other health clubs You pay for what you get..The christian values and community building are lacking under the ceo at this facility.
