Having had to deal with several physical issues for the past 4 years, ranging from a numb leg, dislocated shoulder to a rotator cuff and partial bicep tear, I had to readjust my workout. A few months ago I decided to drive from Knoxville to Oak Ridge and try the “Barre Fusion” class. It suited my needs and I kept coming back for more. Last week was the first time in nearly 4 years that I was able to slightly feel the Quads in my numb leg after class. I wanted to take a moment, to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding work Joanna Vandergriff consistently delivers and would like to express my utmost gratitude for this gem of a human being, who has made such a huge positive impact on my life.
I have been working out with her for 10 years now and her passion, dedication, devotion and most of all CARE for her students is mind blowing. She is not just an excellent instructor, but most importantly she is an excellent COACH !! It’s the “little” things she says and cares about that stick with you, such as: “inhale going up… bend to the side while exhaling… exhale again and stretch further” , “knees outward”, “knees behind toes” etc…..
She demonstrates proper form, prioritizes student safety and adapts her instructions to meet the varying needs of different students. Joanna has a gift for teaching and her technique and cueing are impeccable. I know that I speak for many, when I say that we would like to have her as our instructor more often in so many classes which she knows how to coach (I like to use coach rather than teach, because many can teach but only few can coach). Maybe the new management of National Fitness can help us members by sending Joanna more to Knoxville with all the great various classes she masters and perfects.

I have loved coming here. My kids love the childcare. The women that work in there are super friendly and great with the kids. The sign up process was exactly what I wanted in a gym. Love that they have a no contract option. I've never found it to be overcrowded.

Not my normal club, but came because our amenities were out of order. Very nice clean gym, despite showing its age with a dozen roof leak buckets scattered around. Well organized layout, but kind of crowded. Loved the super powerful hot tub jets!

The quality of the gym is good. There is lots of equipment and it is well maintained.

Since my original review the club has updated to have much more flexible contract options and furthermore made it so you could cancel online. If you're looking for a gym in Oak Ridge, this is the one.

Excellent well-kept facilities; indoor pool, sauna, an indoor track, numerous weight machine areas to work out in; great classes and instructors, personal trainers, and professional, friendly, and informative staff. I love working out here. I do classes five days/week and am always glad I showed up to work out. As a single woman, I feel motivated, happy, and 100% safe here.

This is Jamie F my kids love the kid care . I had an issue with my membership from a previous issue . Sam W. Helped me so much the ladies in kid care tried to help accommodate me best they could while this long drawn out issue was finally taken care of. They should really give the kid care and Sam a raise for all the hard work they put in. I like the interaction they do with the kids my kids learned how to hola hoop this week , along with other fun activities . Plus they have parents night out which I have no help for the kiddos so that’s a plus.

Shortly after signing up for a membership here I was in a devastating and life altering accident resulting in my neck being broken as well as my lumbar spine. Due to thus accident I lost a large function of my life as well as was out of work long term. The last thing I ever thought about was cancelling a membership with such serious issues happening in my life. When I started receiving letters from a law office pursuing the full amount of the 3 year membership I was talked into that I never even got to use once I attempted to resolve the situation. I offered to pay the cancelation fees as well as any months backdated as long as my membership was open before they closed it. This should have ranged around $400-500 per the last charge attempt on my account. Only to be met with a follow up letter not even a call telling me they were going to pursue the full 3 year membership totaling at $2520. It is absolutely disgusting to me to go through such a tragedy and be met with such greed. Beautiful gym sure but greedy owners. They're threatening court for this and at this point I'll happily take it because any person with a heart is going to look at this tragedy and be as disgusted as I am.

Overall great experience with the use of the gym and the staff spanning over 18 months and transitioning to month to month. However, the cancellation process has been atrocious, which is why I am giving 3 stars. Working on day 2 of trying to cancel this membership due to lack of use and other personal matters that prevent me from using the gym. You now have to call a call center which is outsourced so there is a language barrier, then you have to submit final payment prior to them closing the account or they will reopen the account and continue charging you. A mix up in their system caused a missed payment and I am still responsible for paying an additional 30 days. Totaling $167 just to cancel a month to month gym membership. This experience has definitely left a sour taste in my mouth.

This place is a trap if you get a membership be prepared to pay for the rest of your life I have had a membership with them for a year and it’s the worst decision I have ever made since I have had this membership I have maybe went 10 times I really don’t have the time for it anymore tried to cancel but you have to pay $3000 and I had to change banks and because of that my payments where behind but I started a plan in April I owed 400 and I am paying a 100 every other week to pay that 400 and yet it is July now and I still owe 300 so where is my money going and I know my monthly membership is 87.00 so where is the rest going I’m so confused but anyways don’t get a membership here go to anywhere else this place is horrible and they tell you can cancel at 3 years and that’s not true either so I’m letting y’all know don’t go here in less you just like to be trapped and like spending lots of money

Families beware and read the fine print before you sign up. Read below for details.

Pros: it's a decent gym with at least one of everything. The movie room is quiet and nice to work out in. I don't get judgement and the vibe is generally good. Membership gives you access to the premium location in West Knoxville if you're willing to drive out there.

Cons: bathrooms and locker rooms are dingy and a little gross. Equipment is older and sometimes stuff is broken.

But the worst part, for my family, is the contract. You're locked into a three year contract which is nearly impossible to get out of. But here's the kicker: IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WHO TURN 12 WHILE YOU'RE UNDER CONTRACT, YOU ARE REQUIRED TO RENEW YOUR CONTRACT WHICH RESETS YOUR TIME BACK TO ZERO. This was not explained to me when we first signed up. When a child under the family plan turns 12, they move from being a child to an adultt membership. Then you have to re-sign up as a family and the contract is now locked in for an additional 3 years. Your only other option is for that family member to just drop out so they can't use the facility anymore until the contract expires. We had three children who were under 12 when we first signed up. This means every time one of them turns 12, our contract resets to zero and we're locked in for an additional 3 years. For us that means we are essentially locked in for SEVEN YEARS. Who knows what job I'll have or what my financial situation will be at that time?

To me, this turns a contract from "this sucks" to "this is predatory." I think the gym is fine and I'm otherwise satisfied, but the terms of the contract are so problematic that I simply cannot recommend it to others with children.

Have been a member many years, pre-Covid and still going as often as possible. Very friendly and helpful staff. Mags, the manager, is very hands-on and doesn’t just sit behind a desk with door closed. He’s out checking, on cleanliness, maintenance concerns and being a viable and accessible management representative.
From Victoria greeting at the front desk to other staff and trainers liken Jean and Alexa, this a place where people make you feel welcome. NFC Oak Ridge is like family, friends from work, church, as well as others in community make it more than just a gym, it’s family.

Great gym. Great location. Great amenities. Always clean. Tons of equipment. Smoothie bar, free weights, machines, fitness classes, basketball court, heavy bags, cardio equipment, pool, hot tub, sauna, tanning booths, showers, ladies only workout area, body builders only workout area, general lifters area, walking track, childcare center. Pretty much anything you want.

I have the family plan for 4 of us - 89.00 per month. It IS a contract membership for 3 years, so keep that in mind. Sometimes they run specials and you can get a month to month for cheaper…. Kinda sad I missed out on that. But they’re pretty transparent about it and let you know how to get out of the contract, should you need to before ever signing up.

Overall I would recommend. It’s 10x better than “planet fitness pizza in my mouth” or anychain fitness (the “White Castle” of gyms). The missing star is simply due to the fact that I really don’t like contract memberships. If the gym is good, I’ll keep going and keep paying. I didn’t have to be “locked in”. Fortunately, the gym is really good.

Synopsis: An objectively accurate and honest rating, IMO.
Briefly, the National Fitness Center in Oak Ridge, TN, can be summarized as an absolute disingenuous money-grab/personal information shake-down from the instant you walk in the front door until you leave. Barring any hyperbole, my visit to this establishment, albeit brief, was a complete waste of my time time.

Background: Novice/inexperienced about best exercise practices, especially in the gym setting, so I was specifically seeking a personal trainer to get things started and to establish a safe/effective routine.

Details: Overall, staff was presumptuous and aggressively sales-driven. Upon entry, my personal ID card (driver's license) was taken and filed away in exchange for tablet, which requested too much personal information for account creation (i.e., typical details + photo of face and some other items). Eventually, a sales representative called me into his office whereby, the sales pitch was talked at me for a while until I gained the confidence to interject so I could explain my intentions and excuse myself due to the ill-suited fit.

Conclusion: Don't bother!

They aren’t truthful about their memberships. Moved out of state and provided new address and won’t let you cancel. It costs $4000 to get out of a 3 year contract and they won’t let you get out of it. The people that sign you up tell you that you can get out of a contract by paying $195 which is ridiculous, but $4000 for leaving a gym. So sad. It was such a nice gym, too. They don’t tell you the truth.

Beware. The manager dude from Hawaii will lie to you. I joined while working in Oak Ridge and specifically ask about canceling before signing anything. He told me no problem (he wouldn't look at me when he said it tho). The "contracts" are turned over to a bank that does not want to cancel for any reason. She wanted proof of a "new permanent residence" and it had to be "verified". I travel with my work and I'm not even in Tennessee anymore but they still take the money out of my account. This was all explained up front. What people will do for a few dollars nowadays.

The women’s room hasn’t had AC for
over two months. I spoke to someone two weeks ago and nothing happened. I spoke to the women working out in the room (there were a lot) today and they said they had all mentioned it to the staff and the managers. One of them spoke to the general manager. If this were another room instead of the women’s room, I came help but think this problem would have already been fixed. Not returning until this is remedied and if it isn’t remedied then I’m cancelling my membership.

I've been going for a couple of months now and just wanted to share my thoughts. Specifically to the oak ridge location. It's a nice gym, and the employees all seem friendly. For the price, it's still a bit questionable... One of our particular issues is with daycare hours. Day care, during week days, is split 8-12 and 4-8. There is no day care from 12-4 which would be most convenient for my gf who would like to go when she is off. Also, for weekends, it's only 8-12 on Saturday, no later hours or anything on Sunday. If I had to make a request for anything, it would be to have more available day care hours.

The other thing I wanted to note is maintenance. I've noticed around the upstairs track area, ceiling tiles missing, or after/while it's raining, buckets are usually placed to catch leaking water. Also, in the shower area of the men's room, the ceiling vent is absolutely covered in lint. It just makes me question the amount of cleaning that's done in the locker rooms at all. Again, for what even a basic membership cost, I wish maintenance could be better.

Physical training is $50 for 1/2 hour, which also feels steep to me.

Finally, as I'm sure you will read in other reviews, I wish canceling was an easier process. It's a minimum of 1 year membership and there is hoops to jump through to do so. There's no ability to pause a membership due to health/injury reasons if you are out for a month or so.

This is just my honest feedback, better day care hours and better maintenance would really make this gym the premium gym it's built to be.

Hot tub 😌.
Originally I had posted a 5 star review. However recently I was met with passive agressive confrontation and unprofessionalism from the female manager at oak ridge.

For weeks now we have had to be read a message "Add your kids." We are co parenting and only have them partial time. We knew we had them when we joined. We pay for their one day passes to come, equivalting to $30 each time they come which is approximately once every couple of months. This carries the impression of business hazing, by attempting to annoy us until we cave and spend extra money, unethical is another term that is earned.

I am solidly considering if my membership will be renewed at this point. I requested to have the message removed, apparently "it stays forever and only corporate can remove it." Then, when the issue was brought to the gyms manager for resolution, it was deemed appropriate to turn this opportunity into a sales pitch. This is unacceptable and poor business practice.

For what we pay at these facilities, problems should equal resolution, not another opportunity for a new sale. On top of not being heard from the staff, the message remains. Almost as a petty, passive agressive way to annoy us into submission.

I am doubtful we will be paying for our children to come here to swim considering all the other options available that offer a hassle-free experience. As well as impacting our decision to renew our contract once over. It goes without saying, but we once raved about NFC to our friends, family, and coworkers however this infraction has changed the dynamic of how we feel.

I am disappointed that is is allowed and encouraged by a company of such great report within the communitiy. It is an expensive membership in the first place to now have to deal with this on top of that???

Awesome local gym in Oak Ridge. Love the childcare area and appreciate the staff. They care about kids and do extra things like Parents Day Out and arts/crafts. Instructors are excellent. Grant at front desk is always friendly and professional. Mags is doing a good job managing the gym, he cares about the staff and members, and goes out of his way to make the gym atmosphere really welcoming.
A new thing, but I really appreciated that the gym opened its doors to our local 7-9 years old soccer girls this winter season, thanks Cassie and Linda for helping to organize. It allowed the girls to have extra practice on a season they typically wouldn’t have that support. Thank you so much NFC!!!! Not surprised by their support, they also host community family events like the kids “triathlon” and trunk or treats. One of the best businesses that add to the community in Oak Ridge for sure!

NFC’s Stretch & Recovery Program is amazing & it is due to JoAnna! I’ve recently re-joined NFC, and I’ve been very pleased with changes I’m discovering! The greatest of these changes is JoAnna, and this marvelous program I never knew about before! I expected someone showing me a few basic moves, using bands, etc. This is not what I discovered!
JoAnna is an impressive powerhouse and wealth of knowledge! After her ascertaining my problem points & overall health she began working on/With me. The with me is a very important factor. With everything JoAnna would do, she would explain as she went what she was doing, and how it would impact my body and my overall well-being. This amazing adventure included everything from healthy breathing techniques, stretching, massage therapy and so much more! I have had massages, done years of PT on everything,
BUT NEVER had such a comprehensive wellness experience as I did today! I am so looking forward to my next visit! Please do yourself an amazing favor, sign up to meet JoAnna!

Annual membership expired in October, stopped in today to renew. Turns out they had a Black Friday special for $34.95. Great! First, told I had to pay $15 for a new scan card because it’s a new membership, and the old card cannot be linked to the new membership. Makes no sense…but we work past that. Then I am told I am not eligible for the Black Friday special because I am within 30 days of the expiration of my old membership. What?? I can only renew at the old price which is some $30 more per month. What!!! So, instead of getting a happy member on a 36 month contract, they lost a membership. If anyone in management can explain the logic behind that business decision, I would love to hear it!

I really like this gym everybody seems nice, the equipment is awesome, there's a theater workout room, classes, sauna room, and so much more but today I am leaving this gym one star because after a nice workout and a shower I was confronted by Joanne, while blow drying my hair Joanne began to tell me that this room is only for people who have $20 lockers...assuming that I did not have a locker. I basically feel judged and labeled based on my appearance. I think it was rude of her not to ask if I have a locker but to just assume and tell me to go to the next room to use the blow dryer. Mind you both locker rooms are empty and no one with a $20 locker was waiting on a hair dryer. I'm definitely unsatisfied with my membership.

Great facility for working out. Overall the staff is great. Lots of features to take advantage of including the indoor track, the womans room, the pool and sauna and hot tub. Lots of class options for whatever your into. I personally have enjoyed zumba and body flow. They have childcare. My kids love going to the children's room and participating in activities such as karate and tumbling.

The cons are its little pricey compared to other places in the area (although i think they do offer a lot to make up for that price difference) and I don't like being locked into a 3 year contract when life and finances can change so much over such a long time. Also as great as the child care is there is only child care on weekdays and Saturday mornings.

Front desk people are rude and indifferent unless you're a curvaceous hot girl. If you're just a normal guy looking to workout don't expect to be acknowledged as a guest or client. No "what's up" "hello" "have a good one" not even a nod. I never realized that gym employees are part of the upper echelons. Maybe I should try schmoozing them since it is such a privilege to be in their presence.

I have been a member here for about 2 years now, and I have never had any issues with the Gym itself. I recently signed up for a personal trainer and the experience has been great so far. Allan has been incredible and extremely supportive of me during this huge life transition. I cannot express enough how I incredible I feel just after 2 months of Training with him. I have seen great progress. TO has been awesome and supportive as well. I am not a fan of doing reviews, but this one is different on a life altering way.

Years ago I was under the impression by one of there front desk workers that I could cancel my membership over the phone, the operator on the other line had said I had canceled my membership, now I'm being told I never canceled my membership and that it's not possible over the phone and that you actually have to send in a letter to there home office in Knoxville. Also the only reason you can cancel is if you have become so sick that you can no longer use there services or you have to move 25 miles away from there branch to even cancel your membership so I can't cancel even if I couldn't afford nor have time to use? I feel this is extremely unprofessional.

Very unreasonable. I’ve lost my job and can’t afford my membership. Although I do not recall doing so, apparently I signed a 3 year agreement. I highly doubt I would of knowing agreed to such a lengthy contract. There’s no way to get out of the contract unless you move 20 miles away from any gym. And even though I do not attend the gym anymore I’m still being charged monthly and it will go to collections soon because I do not have the money to keep paying for this membership. If you want to attend this gym keep that in mind and factor in that life can turn for you at any moment and they could care less.

Was conned into signing a personal training contract under false conditions. When I signed up for the gym membership I received a free body scan and consultation with T.O, where he mentioned a personal trainer. I said I wasn’t interested because of my illness that would make it difficult to keep up a routine of doing a session once a week. I have fibromyalgia and I never know when it’s going to flare up badly. With just the initial gym membership I could come at any time around my flare ups. T.O explained if I felt like it was too much, I could cancel at anytime. I did the training for about a month and a half when I experienced a flare up that lasted a while and decided then was the time to cancel. Called up the gym and they told me it’s in the CONTRACT THAT I CAN’T CANCEL UNLESS I MOVE OVER 20 MINUTES AWAY FROM A NATIONAL FITNESS LOCATION!!!! I explained I was told otherwise by T.O, who signed me up, and the manager did NOTHING!!! These people are liars and crooks! They say I owe $2000 and have sent it to collections. I can’t believe they would stoop so low as to lie to me to get me to sign up. I wouldn’t of signed up for the contract if I wouldn’t of been able to cancel. If I ever go to a gym again, it will be elsewhere! Do NOT sign up for a contract of any sort here!

Pricing is ridiculous, never really noticed any changes during COVID except that they were trying everything they could to still take your money. Other NFCs were not worth the membership cost and I just wanted to bring a friend one day and it was $20. Not worth it going somewhere else one my 3-YEAR contract is over.

The National fitness is a nice looking gym and the place would get more business if they would quit the horrible car sales pitch to get you locked in their contract deals. Stop over charging people and locking people in contracts that are extremely difficult to get out of. They want me to pay 50.00 extra for a maintenance fee, really???

IF I COULD RATE A -10 I WOULD. MOST DISHONEST, SHADY COMPANY EVER. DO NOT JOIN OR YOU WILL PAY OUT THE NOSE TO GET OUT. I CANCELLED WITH MANAGER JOSH WHO TOLD ME I WAS LUCKY TO CANCEL WHEN I DID AS IF I HAD WAITED A DAY IT WOULD BE ANOTHER MONTHLY CHARGE. SURPRISE - THEY CHARGED ME AGAIN. WHEN I DISPUTED IT, THEY CHARGED ME AN ADDITIONAL $40 TO CANCEL FOR A SECOND TIME. IF I WASN'T TRYING TO BUY A HOUSE, I WOULDN'T HAVE PAID IT - THEY ARE SHADY, DISHONEST AND CLEARLY OUT OF MONEY TO DO THIS TO A 3+ YEAR MEMBER.

Deceitful and conniving company. Do not start a membership here. They are overpriced and the locker rooms are not sanitary and are old. When you decide to cancel, you better dot every I and cross every T or they will get you with additional fees and continue to send you vague information on how to even cancel. The employees are trained to do this. Avoid the frustration and stay away from this crooked company. Ideal rating would be -10 stars.

I've been pulled around for a few days now, trying to cancel. I'm finally canceled, and I'm very disappointed at how long it took to do it. I miss going to the gym, true, but we can't afford the risk of Covid any more and now we are done. I'd say , go down there in person if you're trying to cancel membership. And if that doesn't work, call corp.

I briefly tried out this gym for less than a week. I moved out of the state and back to Florida. I canceled my membership. I was told I need to provide documentation that I moved back to Florida which I did. I was then told everything would be taken care of. Instead of canceling it like they said they were going to because I no longer live in the state of Tennessee. They went ahead and put $5975 derogatory mark on my credit report.

The Membership is at Cadillac prices but Dodge Neon in quality.

Showers are filthy. I will start posting pics if this doesnt get resolved

Do not join. The management is very unprofessional especially if you wish to terminate your contract. There are many other great gyms with either month to month or simple contracts at a better price. Don't let the sales presentation charm you into something you will greatly regret.

Your response to this comment was quite ridiculous considering how I have been treated by your organization.

Class action suit would be appropriate.

The staff at this location is 5-star. The cardio equipment is not up to par with any of the cheaper gyms, so I am excited to see my 3-year commitment behind me. Unless you're looking for a place to swim, this simply doesn't live up to the competition....and there are other places to swim. Again, the staff is great, but they can't make up for the outdated equipment.

The Management make it difficult to work with our military accounts. We were given “7 Day gym passes” to pass out to people, and we told we can’t use them any more. Simply because the worker who gave them to us does not work there anymore. Seems like Golds gym process was smoother and faculty actually worked with us, while our accounts were processing. Several Military members have had issues with this corporation.
