i have a black card membership so i brought a friend who has been with me multiple times and never had a problem when checking with her. The two people at the front as soon as we walked in were super rude to both of us because she headed to the bathroom first, on accident. I told them she’s in the system because that’s how they have pulled her up every single time and never had a problem with it before, until today, they acted like i was stupid for not having her on my account, both had an attitude from the beginning. The guy that was up there and super rude said well i’m the manager here fyi his name is John. didn’t happen to catch the girls name that was up there with him. i have never came in here and had such an experience in my life. as soon as we walked away they were obviously talking about us both, which whatever. but don’t say you’re a manager when you have the worst attitude over nothing. not a good look. anyway i won’t be coming back to this gym if i walk in the door and either of them are at the front. happy day after thanksgiving!! But John needs a better attitude.

Update 10/23/25: Nearly half the gym contains broken equipment. This is reported to staff regularly and there are no repairs. More than half the cardio equipment doesn't work. Nearly none of the treadmills with TVs work. The hydromassages are down weekly. Both of the coin chairs are broken. What was once a nice gym is barely functional.

Pros
Conveniently located, great hours, cheap monthly rate, and decent selection of equipment.

Cons
1. The equipment on property is poorly maintained. The equipment stays broken for months on end. Every day, I discover something new that is broken. The seats on the equipment are repeat offenders, with many seats inoperable the entire time I've been a member (since 2019). Some equipment is borderline dangerous due to the poor maintenance. Once day a leg machine broke while I used it (bolts and screws flew out of it.) The inability to properly position seats is likewise dangerous, as it places you at risk for injury due to poor positioning. In the women's bathroom, a sink remained out of order for 14 months. The water bottle filter is rarely changed. These complaints fall on deaf ears.
2. One single person is responsible for cleaning. If that person is not at work, nothing gets cleaned and the trash piles up for days. She works very hard to maintain the cleanliness of the facilities and takes great pride in her job, but she has little to no assistance from the other employees. The other employees stand at the check in desk glued to devices with little guest interaction.
3. Rules are not consistently enforced. See above, the majority of employees remain glued to devices all day and often permit inappropriate activities to occur within the facilities.

Bottom line: This is a potentially great gym, it's just poorly managed and poorly maintained.

First time coming back to the gym and everything was perfect. Clean place. The massages were nice, but the lady at the desk was very rude. Had an attitude with me when I said it was my first time tanning. I had my friend sitting in there because I didn’t know we couldn’t. Came in to check it out with a family member and it was nice. The reason for 3 stars is because people sitting around on the machines to chat or text rather than exercise then make it to where people who actually want to use them can’t. I understand waiting in line while someone works out but just sitting to chat is ridiculous. Did see the signs that address it but seems like employees need to walk up to people and enforce it it.

Been a member two days. Facility is clean and equipment is available for most any workout that I can imagine. Tons of cardio here and there is no wait when I am there. Lots of TV’s and music is playing and the place is well lit and conducive to a workout. Cleaner and paper towels are abundant and well placed. A few placards noting equipment is being serviced but the only bottleneck I saw was on the step machine. 1 of 4 was down when I was there. Even if a few machines are down, there are many equipment options that would enable you to execute your workout. People were actively cleaning both days I was there. Overall, PF appears to be a very good choice for an economical gym.

Over $70,000 worth of antique jewelry stolen from this location and the manager didn't seem to care. Careless employees who didn't warn anyone there had been a theft 15 min before. Terrible decision ever deciding to join PF. They bill you every 17th of the month, however I was not billed on the 17th so I called and asked why I was not billed. They proceeded to tell me that I was billed when my checking account said otherwise. Then on the 20th I woke up to my bill on TOP of a late fee. I went in there today and spoke to the assistant manager Katlin and she said there was nothing they can do. This place sucks.

Stupid scam of a company looking to bullshit you in the door and then charge you fee after fee. $20 for a day pass is a joke. They also only accept bank account information for payment, no cash or cards. I’m impressed with the equipment, cleanliness, staff, and the fact that they have Tootsie Rolls at the desk. My girlfriend and I used to work out together here. We did this until someone at this gym took pictures of her working out there and posted them online. She was humiliated, and the one who took the pictures got away with it. I’ve started coming back alone.

Been a planet fitness member for a long time. This gym is kept clean and has good up to date equipment. However I say this as nice as possible the people at the front do not know how to run the desk I am usually waiting 8 minutes to purchase a muscle milk and today I was told that I couldn’t buy one because it wasn’t my home gym and then it was changed after a few minutes when someone else stepped in and I was able to purchase. Went to lay in the tanning bed and was asked if I had eyewear and I said no and was told I had to purchase eye wear to lay. This is the only planet fitness I’ve ever been to where I’ve been told I had to buy eyewear in order to lay.

It's a great facility - open and airy - TVs if you like that - great machines and the staff is always nice and friendly. . . I'm older so I don't like that people don't much anymore. We all have our ear buds in (me too) . . years ago, people talked a bit . . . unless they know each other . . . noone talks to stranger. . . I miss that about the old gyms. I mean you didn't talk long but you got to know at least a few people that way . . . I've been going quite a while; I don't know anyone there. I'm afraid to talk to someone because they might not want that . . . It would be nice if PF had at least once a month "social" thingy - last an hour or two - for folks that would enjoy that (it might just be me! Oh well!)

It's a great gym, especially if you're new to working out. I do have a couple of gripes, one of them being some of the employees are really rude, but most of them are really nice. I think it's no coincidence that on the days we come in and the not so friendly employees are working, the bathrooms are also terribly dirty, paper towel dispensers are empty,etc.

If those issues would be solved by management, I would have 0 complaints.

The gym itself is great, but many people tie-up machines for long periods of time, because they are just sitting there playing on their phone, while others are waiting to use the same machine. I wish that the management would not allow cell phones on the gym floor.

Highly recommend! I'm so glad I made the decision to be a better me. Machines are easy to learn, hydro massage is awesome, red light therapy is great, and tanning beds are better than any other ive used before. And best of all, it really is a non judgemental atmosphere. Everyone is jamming to their own pace and no one bothers anyone else. Love it!

I appreciate, as an old gentleman who is recovering from back surgery, and is not in very good shape, the non-judgmental atmosphere. I may not be pumping iron like someone who has regularly used your Gym, but I am trying to regain a level of fitness that I used to have. Update 3 months later, same equipment still broken plus 2 more, how long does it take to replace a cable? Hour and a half workout, 30 minutes spent waiting on equipment because only one works.

Just moved here. I suppose since it's the only PF in the city it's not aware of how badly they need an equipment update. No hammer strength machines at all. Only one oblique machine. Limited abs equipment. Bare in mind I moved from a larger city, but paying multiple club access makes zero sense for me anymore considering the gyms in this area are spaced 35 to 40 mins apart. It stinks because I've been a member since 2014. Hopefully they open another one here or seriously update their equipment.

Update: Spoke with club manager regarding equipment update and possible up and coming new locations in the area. Was told there is a complete remodel every 5 years. Strongly considering another gym. You would think if there was only one location in the city the business would put their all into diversifying the equipment and providing newer models.

Update 12/03/2024 - Equipment still needs updated and there are a lot of machines missing in comparison to other franchises I've been too. But I realize this has to do with Excel Fitness and not the area manager. She is actually very upbeat and professional and the team here is awesome and that makes up for how Excel Fitness is dropping the ball with keeping the gym up-to-date. For the area manager and the team alone I am raising my rating.

So I quickly just gave 5 stars & nothing more but after reading some of these reviews, I had to come edit mine.
I have worked out, in a gym, off and on for the last 30 yrs. In that time, I have been a member at many many gyms, both small owner, operator gyms and national chain gyms. To be honest, it took me a long while to join PF because it was a national chain (much like restaurants the small ones are usually always better). However, in January, I found myself needing to get back into a gym routine desperately. I was also working out of state at the time, in Louisville, KY. I needed something that I was going to be able to go to when home and when traveling. My 1st 3 months of membership was in Louisville. So, to be honest, I was terrified at the thought of having to use a small town PF after getting accustomed to a big city gym. In the past, (and not with PF) the small town ones are not maintained, cleaned, or as helpful as the big city gyms. After reading these reviews, I am beginning to understand that it's more the members than it is the staff. I mean how are you going to give a gym a bad review because they "clean too much"? That is a perfect example of why people had to be told to wash their hands and cover their mouth when they cough back during 2020. Sir, that is someone else's bodily fluids...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE allow them to clean as much as they wish. I also noticed quite a few reviews stating the equipment is always tore up. Yesterday 5/8 was the 1st time I have been in the Kingsport location & something not working. It was just a treadmill & only 1 treadmill out of probably 30 that they have.
This gym has acceded my expectations. It's always clean, the employees greet me every single time I walk in the door. They also always tell me to have a good day/evening/whatever it is at the time I am in there.
If I had any complaints at all, it would be complaints about members. I use the circuit machines. I use them as they were intended, in a circuit. In the last 2 months not a single person I have seen come into the circuit area are using them in that manner. It's very aggravating to have someone walk up, see that you are on machine #5 and they go over and get on machine #7. In case you don't know, that would be your next machine, after a 60 second cardio. And then they don't even use it with the lights, so they are never on it for just 60 or 90 seconds. They want to set there for 5 minutes in between their reps. For those of us that use the circuit machines in the way they are intended, we do it to save time on our workout. If you see someone halfway through the circuit, please do NOT run to jump on the machine in front of them. We will literally only be on it for a Max of 90 seconds then you can have it to make your phone calls, or take a nap between reps or whatever your heart desires. Just please let those of us that have a life outside of the gym get our workout in. And folks we are grown arse humans, WIPE YOUR SWEAT OFF OF MACHINES AND ESPECIALLY TANNING BEDS

So people please look past the reviews that talk about broke equipment or anything negative and give this place a chance to conclude your own opinion. Cause I couldn't ask for a better gym. Not to mention, you are NOT going to get unlimited tanning for 25 a month, much less the rest of the spa membership stuff and the gym membership. All those things together, anywhere else or if you had to purchase separately (cause not all gyms have tanning or massage) it would cost you 50 or more a month. So you can't beat the deal.
Added brownie points for the fact that I can go anywhere in the country and won't miss a workout or a tanning visit.

Basically, I absolutely 💯 💯💯 💚💚💚 Planet Fitness and would give them more stars if I could.

Great place to exercise, i had a membership with anytime fitness for a while and Planet Fitness is way better. The price is unbeatable and they have more equipment, the hydro massage chairs and tanning booths are definitely a plus. I went to the kingsport location( 11pm) for the first time. It was very similar to the other locations I have visited previously. The layout was very similar. I was greeted by a staff member when I walked in ( Jesse). He was very nice. He took my picture because I didn't have one on my file. He asked if I needed any help since he noticed I was kinda new( new to this location). He took the time to talk to me and welcome me to this location. As the night went on I worked out in the equipment- I used the massage bed, and also tried the total enhancement for the first time. Since I had never used it Jesse explained the process to me and what to expect. I had a great time there. I really like planet fitness because the people are friendly, no judgement, and the facilities are always clean. Thank you!

It is always so hot in there that it makes working out terrible. Especially tanning, it is so hot inside their tanning rooms that you’re pouring sweat before you even press start, not the smartest way to cut costs in my opinion, not in a place where people need to cool off. This is a very well maintained, inexpensive place to grow your body and enhance your physical well-being. For those of you who need a little more than muscle exercise, they have plenty of cardio machines, massage chairs, a tanning booth or two, and they have 'red light therapy' which is good for all sorts of things your body needs.

This is a wonderful go-to spot for casual gym goers.

Hopefully with the new management and staff things will go better than in the past. I've had some very bad experiences in the past with some staff members, with the exception of Adam and a few others that are always very helpful and pleasant. Adam is truly exceptional with his politeness and cheerful attitude and I'm glad he is still there. Many of the machines are not operating well at all and that never is given attention to until the machine completely fails. I have several of my employees that go to this gym, and we have now offered a paid membership to any and all employees that want to join. I have 26 employees, and hope many will take us up on this offer. I've not met the new manager but I've heard she is a nice and reasonable person to deal with. I might also mention this gym has a great amount of really friendly members that are always willing help ya out if needed.

Went in to quit the gym last month (March) The guy at the front desk, tanner, told me that if I waited one more month that it would be cheaper to just make a membership fee payment then to cancel that day and pay the $60 cancellation fee. He told me to come back in the month of April after I made my April payment to come in and cancel. Here it is. After my April payment I go in and they tell me that I need to come back in June in order for that to happen!! This really sucks because no one documented that I came in to cancel my membership and this guy gave me false information having me give the gym an extra payment on top of the $60 cancellation fee. Since the new owners have taken over this gym sucks!
And the two girls that help me at the front desk were both managers! Glad I cancelled!!!!!

I just started going two days ago and absolutely love it. There’s a lady with a nose piercing that works later at night and she is so nice and very helpful if you were to have any questions. I’ve gained a bit of weight recently and have really been wanting to get back on track. I’ve felt zero judgment since I’ve been going.

Me encantó por varias razones, la primera me contestaron una llamada a que hice con el propósito de ver cuál es la atención al cliente y me respondieron perfectamente no inmediato pero si me regresaron la llamada el mismo día 2do están abiertos los 7 días 24/7, tercero está muy limpio comparado con los de área de florida👎🏽, cuarto es muy amplio y tiene suficiente estacionamiento 5to al menos de las 3 recepcionistas una tuvo la humildad de saludarme, en otros lugares que conozco de todos las personas que están paradas ni te voltean a ver y mucho menos te saludan.
I recommend this place because in general is clean, especially I love the restrooms were incredibly clean👌 has enough parking, is OPEN every day 24 hrs 👏, and at least one of the staff members say to me thank u for coming👏. I do not ask for her name but Thank u KINGSPORT planet fitness.

Had a membership there. They cancelled my membership out of no where even when I called to make the arrangements to pay up account because I forgot when my bank info was stolen to change that account. The member that said they noted the account did not and couldn't get the new manager to even call back and explain or make it right. Then the new members who are there now super NOT friendly. Looking for new gym.

Very happy with Kingsport, TN PF. PF Rockford, Il (E State) is HORRIBLE!! Terrible customer service and can get NO response. Kingsport is amazing and willing to help with issues!! Highly recommend them
