One of my favorite workout places. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Lots of workout machines, free weights, cardio equipment, an indoor swimming pool, indoor basketball/pickleball courts, etc.!! They also have special health programs from time to time in addition to the regular workout programs. Extra big locker rooms and they keep the entire facility clean.

This YMCA is a great centrally located place for physical therapy and gym needs.
The physical therapists are very knowledgeable and always provide excellent care. The parking lot is a different story all together. The Mars rovers were prepared for the craters on Mars, however, my vehicle is not.

Iโve been going here for 13 years. I was here when it was St, Maryโs, the changed to Tennova. Now YMCA. The manager, Bill, is AWESOME! And his assistant Ray rocks as well. The whole staff is awesome. Debbie front desk is great as well. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Me and ny Swim Team use this piol two times a week, and I love it. There is plenty of lanes for our big team, and there a blocks so we can practice jumping off. Even though I do love this pool, they often over chlorinate the pool. Which causes us swimmers to cough, have scratchy throats, and make it feel like we can't breath.

I need to leave a positive vibe here. I saw the Nashville negative review saying this place mistreated her cause sheโs black. I saw her other reviews calling other places she didnโt like racist. I am Native American. I work out with my black friends here. We have never had trouble over our color and we have never had to stoop to pulling a race card. Stay in Nashville. Stop bringing that negative energy to Knoxville.
Also, shout out to Bill. Heโs an amazing down to earth director and makes this place better.

I came here from Nashville and I called ahead of time to make sure I could work out here. When I got there she said I couldnโt come in and my guest would have to pay $12? Iโve never heard of that and it was a wasted trip although I called ahead. Very disappointed. Not sure if she decided not to let me in because Iโm black or because she was having a bad day but either way people shouldnโt be treated so bad.

Honestly, this place sucks. The lifeguards wonโt let you swim underwater bc of โexcessive breath holdingโ. The family swim doesnโt start until 1 PM unlike others in the area that start at 11. Kids arenโt allowed in the hot tub even with an adult. If itโs adults-only in the pool, why canโt a child sit in the hot tub with a parent? The life guards are often gathered on the end of the pool opposite where everyone is and not paying attention. Not a fan at all. Let people use the facilities theyโve paid for and let the older adults who are mostly retired come earlier in the day.

Dirtiest YMCA I've ever been to. We're new to this state, had multiple YMCAs in my previous location, they were kept clean! At this Tennova location you have Dirty locker rooms, dark sauna with blackened wood, the steam room is nasty. The pool area was not clean. At the YMCA in MN you always have people cleaning: You can see the Pool people cleaning gutters with a hose, sweep and mop the locker rooms during open hours, they shut down the sauna during the day for additional cleaning. We're not clean freaks, at all, but this location.... Wow ๐ฎ
We REALLY want a YMCA that has a clean pool AND sauna and/ or steam room!
It's one of the reasons we chose Knoxville as a good place to move to....
We need a Good, ****Clean**** YMCA!!!!!
This one was disgusting - I hope this is a temporary issue .....

This place has become absolutely terrible since the Y took over. The good: itโs big with a good variety of equipment and amenities (when theyโre working) and has child care. The bad: almost everything else
โข itโs constantly packed
โข the one room you can go that isnโt constantly packed, you will normally get kicked out of in favor of training โclassesโ
โข there are potholes the size of craters in the parking lot that apparently no one has any interest in fixing
โข they stopped offering towels (weeks before their signs said the towel service was ending too)
โข they close an hour earlier on weekends and open an hour later on Sundays than they did before the Y took over
โข something is always broken or not available for use
โข pickleball has absolutely taken over the BASKETBALL court, every week day in the middle of the day and two week nights. Taking up half the court would be slightly more understandable but nope. And if you check the schedule on the app and it says โopen gymโ, youโre liable to drive down there to find out that was a lie and theyโre randomly allowing the pickleball takeover on a random night
โข on the off chance they ARE allowing basketball on the BASKETBALL court, good luck trying to play; there are always a million people, mostly teenagers, there
Thatโs all I got for now

I only went here because itโs the only thing close to me with a swimming pool. Everything is for children, not seniors or working adults. Some of the pool staff are rude and hate to see you coming because they might have to put their phones down and work. The showers are never cleaned and pool hours are shrinking, I assume the gym will start closing earlier next. Swim teams are year round and are priority above all other members. It was better when it was Tennova.

It's very family-friendly. Like other reviews have mentioned, there are children all over the place in this gym. If you want to use the pool or basketball court, make sure you go at the right time. I wouldn't know what time that is because it always looked pretty busy to me. The downfall for me was that it was $51/mo which is the highest I have ever paid for a membership. That was only for one person. Also, I received emails announcing some sort of weird problem they were having such as hot water. I hired a trainer who I thought had my best interest, but I think his best interest was making commission off of those he trained. I left this place feeling like a sale instead of a valued client. Plus, I think my my workouts were not planned out which wasn't a big deal to me, but they were miscalculated off the package I ordered. Overall, meh.

Honestly glad weโre moving and glad to know we will never be coming back here. Whatโs the point of there being a kids play pickle ball night if all the adults do is separate them and leave the only 2 kids to play by themselves? Family friendly, just not the people who come here.

The gym is not what it used to be.
The positives are that the front desk is always friendly, there is always a basketball game to be played, and the upstairs gym equipment is nice and new.
The negatives are that many of the pool staff is not friendly, and I get it. They probably had to put up with a lot of things that they should not. The pool hours continue to shrink. They now close the pool at 8:30pm and their swim teams that they allow to swim there consume the majority of the lanes and the time in the evenings. Additionally the swim teams they host tend to not clean up after themselves and leave towels all over the locker room. It would seem that the towel problem has gotten so rampant that they now limit the amount of towels that they allow someone to use. Gone are the days of being able to have a towel for the pool and for the shower. Lastly they have a locker rental system however they are always out of Reserved signs to put on your locker so no one really knows who is actually reserving a locker and who is not. Due to this I have had people try to break into my reserved locker or place extra locks on my reserved locker because the gym continues to not get the reserved signs needed.
Overall if you are into basketball or land workouts. You will be fine at this gym. However if you are looking for a well kept locker room and an enjoyable pool experience. Look elsewhere.

Good facility but can get kind of crowded both in the gym (weights, machines) and the classes especially the more popular one's.
I've seen more than 50 people in some of the fitness classes but I've also seen as few as around 10.
The classes are good classes and there are many classes and a variety except Sunday but again they can get very busy especially when school is out.
I've been told by the staff that they are in the process of updating and modernizing much of their weight and cardio equipment which should be helpful. Although many working out are wearing headphones I still think this "Y" is more welcoming and friendly than planet steroid or Gold's prison tattoo. It would be nice if folk's got off of the workout stations if they want to be on their (bff) phone's.
Definitely the "Y" is also supervised better than the 2 places I mentioned but that bars not too high.
Please consider putting an additional Smith machine in the first floor free weight area, please ๐
I think the facility is pretty clean for a health and fitness facility.
Overall a good value for the money.

If you're looking for an adult oriented workout facility, this is NOT the place. Kids are allowed to run wild abusing the equipment. The cardio equipment area is not cleaned regularly. The facility itself in size alone not to mention layout is more suited for a daycare and after school care.
The above review was for the Bob Temple location in Halls which no longer exists as of 12/1/2022.
The following review is for the acquired Tennova location:
The towel service is much appreciated and wish the downtown location would start this back. The new cardio equipment (Dec 2022) was nice but quickly showing wear such as fans on the treadmills not working. The same issue continues to exist where kids are allowed to abuse equipment. A number of the free weight benches need recovering. The resistance machines are confusing in that it feels like mis-mash of equipment has been acquired over the years with no real plan relating to muscle group focus considered. The overall facility is nice and the fresh coat of paint helped but not sure if the focus is a gym for adults or a day care.

UPDATED UPDATE 1/2024: The hot tub is finally fixed, yes! The floor in front of the basket ball viewing has shown improvement, looks like it was cleaned or replaced. Hopefully this trend will continue and not let the place run down.
Update: well, YMCA bought Tennova gym and now it's more crowded than before. Womens hot tub has been broken for about 4 months or so. Everything is looking kind of dirty in the shower areas and around the basketball area. Even the racquetball court could use a good cleaning to get the blood off the walls.
Previous review:
I love this gym much more than the YMCA in Halls we had been members of for years! Has everything I was looking for in a gym and more. Indoor track, separate womens hot tub, sauna, & steam room. The therapy pool is awesome and lap pool. Some of the equipment could used repair especially the air ones. Bathrooms in locker room are definitely ready for update especially the toilets and sinks. Iโm ready for the climbing wall to re-open, hopefully it does. Racquetball is almost always available too. Would love to see an evening spin class in the future.

The new ownership put on a big show when they took over with nice new machines and a much-needed repainting of the first floor. Since then, however, it's been underwhelming. The cardio area still has no appreciable ventilation and is too hot to do a strenuous workout. Same for the group fitness room. Towel service has been significantly reduced; now you have to either bring your own sweat towel or use a big bath towel, assuming there are any. The hot tubs have been out of service for most of the year and should just be declared permanently closed at this point. And the bible verses plastered all over the place are frankly off-putting (and I'm a Christian!). They're not even printed on scenic posters or anything, just sad little laminated computer printouts or massive text banners. I'm aware of what YMCA stands for but other Ys I have been to don't do this; it's just strange. With a Planet Fitness now open just around the corner, they're not doing much to convince people to stay.

Decent gym. One of the few with a sauna and steam room, which is why I chose YMCA. The staff has always been pleasant and the exercise equipment is in good shape. The pool is also in good shape.
The power lifting room is downstairs away from the rest of the equipment, which is limiting if you want to do a circuit, but not a big deal.
My only real complaint is the cleanliness of the men's shower and spa area. It is downright nasty and makes me question how often the two are cleaned and to what extent. On nearly every surface you find dirt, mold, rust, and uhm... other things. Maybe revamp the daily cleaning plan (if there is one..) and hire professionals to do occasional deep clean.
It is so bad that if it wasn't for that, this would be a 5 star gym for me.

I like this ymca. I like the equipment for work outs, great basketball court and, some of the staff are friendly. Some staff are unfriendly and even rude! I wish there was more for kids there. No playground, or not many classes geared for kids or alot space for kids especially younger kids. out of 2 floors open, 2nd is all adult equipment. (not for kids) also 1st floor is about 1/3 a indoor pool so.... childwatch room could be improved as well. Not in the best location of the building in my opinion. . Needs expanding or use part of 3rd floor for something other than offices for staff. A playground for the kids as well as more community events like other ymca locations anyways I still like the this ymca. I'm happy it's there for families. Oh,and the Rock wall is great.

I was a member of Tennova North for years prior to the YMCA merger. It has been unusable and unpleasant since. I am a lap swimmer, and the pool is almost completely inaccessible due to overcrowding. When you can manage to get a lane, the screaming and chaos from dozens of unattended children make it so unpleasant to be there that it's just not worth it. The Y's treatment of Tennova's existing senior citizen membership was heartless and abhorrent. Many found doing their fitness routines so difficult after the buyout that they gave up and went home to slowly die rather than continue to beg the YMCA to give them even a modicum of accommodation. It was heartbreaking to see an organization that claims to be Christian treat our community's elderly and disabled the way they were treated.

I joined when this was Tennova, and I was primarily a pool user. As a diabetic with foot problems. swimming laps was my salvation. Now, the pool is virtually inaccessible due to children crowding in. It is impossible to swim laps, so I am left with no real exercise options. Furthermore, the rates went up, so I must pay more for the right to not use the facilities. I am extremely unhappy. If the staff wants me in an early grave, why not send me a cyanide capsule?

I have been a member of this gym for well over 10 years. This gym went downhill as soon as YMCA took over. Hot water is always out, pool, steam rooms, hot tubs are always out of order (there hasn't been 1 day where everything was operational). Kids now run around the entire gym unsupervised. The new equipment is absolutely terrible (some benches are actually unusable). Basketball court is also unusable as it is split into "2" separate courts. Raquetball/Squash court can only be used at select times due to yoga classes. Website is very misleading on amenities and features because as I mentioned above, most of these aren't even accessible. AC is out frequently as well. It is sad to see a gym that I have gone to for so long, fall so fast.
Edit/Update 5/25/2023:
I am updating this to a 3 star rating (up from 1 star) While its still not up to the standards that the gym was when it was Tennova, they have been making an effort to address the concerns of members, myself included. Several pieces of equipment have been fixed/altered so that they are usable. I have also noticed they have been refilling the pool and the hot water seems to be functioning now as there are no longer signs up saying its broken. The steams rooms and hot tubs however are still out of order.

Was great until it switched over to YMCA. Now itโs more busy which it never was. There also seems to be no age limit on who can be in the main gym. There are little kids running around taking up machines and could cause themselves or others to be injured.

I've been a member since the center opened and have found it to meet most of my needs. However, it's time for an upgrade of the facilities and the equipment. It's definitely showing its age.

I have been a member since the building they broke ground for it. I get massages there quite often; I think today was my last trip there. I was ignored when I walked up to the desk for about 5 minutes. The guy that checked me in was not friendly. The other employee just stood there. They did not let the therapist know that I had arrived. My appointment was for 1pm - I finally asked them to make sure he knew I was there. I got back to the room around 115. The massage was for 90 minutes - I got a little over an hour, so I was cut short by 30 minutes. Very unimpressed by todays visit.

DO NOT GO HERE. I have had the worst experience here hands down. First of all they do not clean their pools enough because I get a serious infection that my Doctor linked to their pools. This happened on two separate times and the second time when I went to cancel my account they made me pay an extra cancellation fee. Worst place to go.

Great facility! I love the indoor Pools. The 3/4 Olympic is great for laps, and the 1/3 Olympic is an extra warm therapy pool. Wonderful classes too. Then enjoy the separate male & female Sauna, Whirlpool, and steam rooms too.
