Great instruction and an awesome community of people. AOK has been an important part of our child’s development, and improved his fitness while building self confidence. Highly recommended!

My daughter (8) and I (39) joined a couple months ago and have both become addicted to karate. We were looking for an activity/hobby for my youngest daughter and this has exceeded every expectation. Sensei Walker is great with kids, as well as us less coordinated adults (me). The classes have a good mix of various age groups, and everyone has been welcoming and supportive. We have both enjoyed learning karate, grappling, weapons, and self-defense, as well as just spending time with each other and getting to know the other students (kids, teens, and adults) at the dojo. Sensei does a great job at explaining (and teaching) the traditional aspects of the karate style as well as practical applications in self-defense scenarios. A few months ago, joining a karate dojo was not something remotely on our radar and now I cannot imagine life without it as part of our daily/weekly routine. Highly recommend attending a session; whether for your child or for yourself, regardless of age or current abilities.

This place is the best! I’ve been going there for about three years now and it couldn’t be any better. The way they work everything is amazing, if you’re injured they work around not through! There are 5or6 black belts so there’s always someone to help you.

Took my 7 year old girl to try out and see if she liked it. The staff were very friendly, they take Karate very seriously for those who want to learn. I've spent 2 years in Okinawa and its' evident the traditions have been passed through the lineage, it's nice to see that they care about it and teach it to their students. We will be regulars as long as she stays interested.

My son has gained a lot of tools through his time in martial arts. Self discipline, respect, and leadership skills are taught. The message has been consistent no matter the leader of each session.

Our daughter has been going to AOK for 3 years now. The training she has been receiving has been incredible. Students also learn about goals, loyalty, discipline perseverance and dedication. The instructors were trained by the best. They are patient and know how to bring the best out of the students.
Our daughter has been learning skills that could save her life one day. To me that is priceless. Our 5 year old grandchild started a few months ago and has been loving it as well.

My Grandson has been a Student here for 5 years. He has learned so so much, not only Martial Arts but discipline, responsibility and respect. Respect not only for others but self respect. I couldn’t ask for a better group of instructors and fellow students. I highly recommend this school.

This is a great school. Noticed a great difference in my son's attitude after he started his karate journey. He's much more disciplined and responsible while still being a child. There have been some shake ups in 2023 but the school is moving forward with a renewed direction and focus on the art form. Excited to see how the school continues to develop as well as my son.
Definitely come in and talk with the leadership if you've got any hesitation, try a trial class, summer classes, etc. Support a small, honest local business and join this karate family!

Initially, this was a 5 star review. After some recent goings-on with interim leadership, I was sadly disappointed.
I enjoyed my time here, as did my children. Shihan Joseph Walker was a legend and a fine man of God. He has recently since passed away (God rest his soul). Once he began feeling ill, the school was held together tirelessly by it's first black belt students produced, teaching and attending classes on top of their rigorous work schedules in order to keep the students engaged. New leadership was brought in and the school was signed over to the new leadership. Although they are kind people, my family was not pleased with the leadership style, to put it gently. We have since found another school. We have very fond memories of our 3 years at Academy of Okinawan Karate which we will always cherish.

As someone who has trained in martial arts in the past my experience here was quite different. Everything that is taught here is taught in both a technical and practical sense.
The instructors here are very patient and down to earth making you feel as a student that you are important. Another thing that makes this place unique is that the more advanced students are more than willing to help and answer any questions I had making me feel a strong sense of community. Everyone helps and looks out for one another from mentors to students.
There may be some more polished schools with fancy marketing videos and budgets but the quality of instruction and training here is great in my opinion and not to mention according to my research and Wikipedia Mr. Walker is a World Champion.

Once the year contract is up and I mailed the certified letter they still kept charging me. Also they charged me way more then what was agreed on the contract. When I called all he said was I haven't seen the certified letter, which I have a reciept and tracking number for.

Both my son and I have been members of the dojo for almost a year now. They form a great extended family for both kids and adults to learn and grow with. They have all sorts of fun classes, from regular karate to sword and weapons classes as well as Black Belt Club and Black Belt Leadership Club. They also have all sorts of fun activites throughout the year. Come in for a visit and become a member, you won't regret it!

I would highly recommend AOK, quite a confidence builder for children and young adults. Instructors are like no other far as a family friendly organization that teaches so much, manors, discipline and respect. Definitely a top investment for anyone. Hats off to Shihan Walker, top notch leadership in every way. Looking forward to many years of fun.

Be aware the owner rushes to paperwork and before you know you signed a year contract ! He didn't even had the curtesy to give you a copy of the contract! The kids are packed like sardines in he class and get not the promised attention!

READ the paperwork you sign carefully. I would actually advise you do NOT sign after the initial intro lesson and take it home to review.
The owner is no doubt very skilled and is great with kids however our issues are more with his business practices. For one, he will not speak to my husband about any account matters because the day we signed up my son, i signed the paperwork due to my husband being at work. When we decided to pull our young son from the dojo due to him struggling academically at school, my husband tried to discuss the matter with the owner and was told I would need to call. When I attempted to explain the situation my son is in, the owner seemed indifferent and reminded us of the 12 month "contract" we signed. We understand that this sport take lots of time and practice but would wish the owner would respect us as parents and be understanding of the situation we are in but we do feel a little burned because not all parts of the "contract" were fully explained. Had I taken the contract home to review I would have NEVER signed our son up.
From our and other parents perspectives the owner seems to be more oriented toward making more money off of the students/ families that attend. No doubt your child will learn Karate at this studio but I feel requiring a 12 month contract out of students younger than 10 is not a wise decision. I know several parents that have expressed they will not be renewing their contracts after the initial 12 month agreement.

Shihan Walker is a fantastic martial arts instructor and renowned expert on the Shuri-Ryu (Okinawan) style of karate. The students are welcoming and the school offers a strong spirit of community with a desire for excellence and personal achievement.
