The staff, Nate, Rob, and Tina, have been amazing and patient when it comes to teaching the Olympic lifts. The past couple of months have improved my technique significantly. I also feel supported by the members who make it a friendly environment.

I’ve been with Austin Barbell for just under a year now, and my experience has been nothing short of amazing. The coaches all share a very clear dedication to the sport, and there is a great sense of community and support across the team. If you live in the Austin area (or are just visiting and looking for a place to train) and have an interest in Olympic weightlifting, look no further and come stop by!

I come in here at least 4 days per week to fight my demons. They usually win, but the Coaches and athletes at Austin Barbell are incredibly supportive of me in my struggle. I've also found a lot of enjoyment in being a part of the ABB community and seeing everyone else go through their athletic journey. Join now or regret it later.

I've been learning to lift at Austin Barbell for about a year now and have really been enjoying it. Despite having no previous lifting experience, the coaches have all been incredibly patient and supportive, especially as I've been navigating various injuries (unrelated and not caused by weightlifting)! They all clearly know what they're doing and run such an impressive operation, which I got to see in full effect at my first competition less than a month ago. The facility and community are both fantastic - it truly feels welcoming to all regardless of what your skill level is, which I think is a really rare thing especially in a city where people are constantly moving in and out. Can't wait to make more memories here :D

I've been a member of Austin Barbell Club for three years now, and I can confidently say it's more than just a gym—it's a community built around strength, discipline, and support.
From day one, the coaching staff impressed me with their deep knowledge of strength training and their commitment to helping every member improve, regardless of experience level. Whether you're a seasoned lifter or just starting out, they meet you where you are and push you to grow.
The facility itself is top-notch: clean, well-maintained, and equipped with everything you need for serious training. The atmosphere is focused but friendly—there's a shared respect for hard work that makes every session motivating.
What really sets ABC apart is the culture. Over the years, I've built friendships, hit personal records I never thought possible, and found a space where progress is celebrated and setbacks are met with encouragement. It’s rare to find a gym where you feel truly seen and supported, and Austin Barbell Club nails it.
If you're looking for a place to get stronger—physically and mentally—this is it.

Amazing space, equipment, and coaching staff. I joined knowing nothing about Olympic lifting and feel much more confident after just 2 months. They even advise me on previous injuries and tailor programming as needed. Ownership is also very active and frequently reinvests in the gym.

I’ve been lifting with Austin Barbell Club
for almost a year now and I seriously love it! The coaches are super supportive and really know what they’re doing, and the community is honestly the best part. Everyone’s so encouraging and it always feels like a safe and positive place to grow and get stronger. I’ve learned so much and always look forward to going, definitely recommend it to anyone looking to start or keep going with lifting!!

Great community, even better coaches. I've progressed a lot faster than I ever did. 10 stars wouldn't suffice to show how good ABB is. I make a point to drive allllll the way to the south location on Sundays to train with Tina, and spend time with the rest of the team.

Austin Barbell Club is the best gym if you're looking to get stronger, receive excellent programming, improve your weightlifting technique, and join a supportive group of team members who are at all ages and skill levels!
I've lifted at big chain gyms, crossfit boxes, and on my own in the garage... Austin Barbell takes the best parts of all of them and combines them together. They offer scheduled classes and open gym time, plenty of equipment and space, knowledgeable coaches with small enough class sizes that you get lots of hands on instruction, tracking of your progress with easy to use apps, and if you're interested in competing the coaches will manage every aspect of the event to make sure you're set up for success.
There are even two locations, on the south and north sides of Austin for a more convenient commute!

Austin Barbell is a welcoming and supportive community for lifters of all ages and abilities. If you want coaches who truly care about your development as a weightlifter and a competitor you will find it at ABB. The coaches are very knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions and help you break down and solve whatever issues you encounter. I came to ABB from a background in competitive CrossFit and was frustrated with my progress in Olympic weightlifting due to the constant pressure to put more weight on the bar at the sacrifice of form. ABB has helped me overcome this pressure and reframe my mindset to focus on virtuosity of technique which will ultimately allow me to lift heavier, safer, and longer.

This place is awesome! Been working with Rob in 1-on-1 personal training (coaching) for about a year and have learned a tremendous amount about the sport, technique, etc. I've gotten much stronger and improved body composition, but above all else, started to hone my olympic weightlifting skills.
The coaches / programs are flexible and accommodate most anyone, but they're aimed at getting people ready for weightlifting competitions (even if the individual does not plan to compete). The personal training can be tailored to each individual, including volume, days/times, nutrition, goals, etc.
The facility is bare-bones relative to a big-box gym, but is top-notch for a weightlifting facility. There is plenty of space, racks, weights, etc.. There's a sauna and PT equipment.

I trained at Austin Barbell Club (South)
while temporarily in town on a consulting job. I can honestly say it’s one of the best weightlifting gyms I’ve been to. The facility is top-notch — spacious and fully equipped with all the latest gear from barbells, weights, squat racks and Olympic platforms. There's also a separate room specifically designated for squatting and pulls. It's perfect for the beginning lifter to the seasoned pro. I highly recommend it.

I recently got back into Oly Lifting a few months ago after not lifting since college. Highly recommend if you’re looking to get strong!
Competing requires discipline, a greater commitment to one self to aim for higher, and grit to keep going no matter how many times you get knocked down.
The high scorers of grit in studies have shown to have better resilience.
How do you train grit, commitment, and discipline?
I found a way that works for me is Austin Barbell South.
I’ve noticed improvement in my personal life, service to others and overall well being.
Wisdom and character are a couple of things I hope people can remember me for.
Lifting the barbell and firing off motor neurons with that type of training helps develop those for me.
I recently did my first American Open Series 2 and the support was phenomenal.
Competing and stepping out of my comfort zone has really helped me grow in ways I needed to.

Joining this gym has changed my life! I attend the south location for early morning workouts (known as the breakfast club) and it is in my opinion the best gym in South Austin!
Great atmosphere, perfect programming, lots of options for any level regardless of experience.
I had no strength training prior, but now can comfortably snatch, clean, and jerk, as well as plethora of accessory workouts provided by the gyms Team builder/ Push press app.
As a native South-Austinite with a full time blue collar job, I would absolutely recommend this hidden gym (pun-intended).

I have been a part of the Austin Barbell for almost 2 years and absolutely loving the experience and the gym.
On top of that, I recently had a chance to be a part of the nutrition program that is offered by Stefanie Fulford, who is the Athlete success manager.
My goal was to lower my weight to get into a lower weight competing category.
Although I signed up for a short 3 months, and I was very happy with the results. My DEXA scans showed 5 pounds of fat loss and 2 pounds of muscle gain just after 2 months.
Austin Barbell supports the athletes in every angle including the nutritional goals, so I was very happy with the outcome and the provided service.

Update Sept 2023:
I am at the beginning of my fourth year with ABB. In the past 3 years the club (and I) have continued to grow and become stronger. We have more, very talented, coaches now and 2 amazing places to train. Our medal wall continues to shine! Personally I have hit a lifetime best in the snatch and qualified for American Open finals. I am a confident competitor now and feel I can trust my form most days yet there are always improvements to be made. Just yesterday I got some new coaching on my elbow positioning at the end of my snatch pull that made an immediate difference in the stability of my receiving position. Things like that keep the sport endlessly interesting.
I still don't really worry too much about the numbers on the bar and just try to improve my process consistently. As a masters athlete I appreciate the thoughtful programming and hope to compete into actual old age.
As far as community, these people are family. I am so proud of the young people I have watched grow up and go away to college, even one on a weightlifting scholarship. I look up to my coaches and trust them. I even have some athletes ahead of me on the timeline of life that remind me what is possible. ABB continues to be an important part of my life and health, an excellent way to spend my time and money.
September 2021:
I have been at Austin Barbell a little over a year, I had just moved to Austin last summer and was looking to do something good for myself to help balance the stress of working in healthcare and living in a new city 2020 style. The intro lessons were my birthday present to myself, a simple decision lead to more benefits than I could have imagined.
Initially, I was concerned about changing how my body looked and building strength but that changed a lot as I fell in love with the sport and became part of the community. I never would have thought I would compete but after watching my teammates challenge themselves at a local meet I was truly inspired to give it my all and grow as much as possible.
Since then I have competed twice, and made major progress with my technique, power and mental toughness under pressure. Each week I get a customized training program and work to get myself in 3-4 sessions that last approx 2 hours. The coaching staff gives careful and precise feedback as needed. We even have a sauna to use for recovery!
Other important things to know, coach Rob is not a good salesman. In fact, money is far from his first, second or third priority. He is careful to prioritize the well-being of the team and emphasized this when I was was initially attempting to join. I was a little surprised by that, but as time goes on I understand the value of choosing athletes, beginner or advanced (some even world class) that will maintain and elevate the supportive and positive environment at ABB. I have benefited immensely from being part of this team and feel that I have a really wonderful tribe of people who work hard and encourage me to be at my best day in and day out. We love our grind :)

Update: I have now been an athlete here for 1.5 years and in that time I have surpassed all of my old PR's (pre-surgery), won a state medal, qualified for national competitions, and gained some best friends for life. Rob is a total class act and goes above and beyond to make sure you thrive here. The gym also is constantly growing and there's a coaching style for every athlete. I have trained at several Olympic lifting clubs around the country over my 7-year career and Austin Barbell is by far the best one in terms of programming, coaching, culture, equipment, and communication.

The very best Olympic Weightlifting gym I have ever been to! I have been competing for over 5 years and can honestly say Austin Barbell combines elite training equipment with world-class coaching and somehow manages to make it feel like your second family. I've been a member of this gym since April 2022.
I started doing CrossFit years ago and gradually got more interested in Olympic Weightlifting as time went on. When I relocated to Austin, I was surprised that I found a difficult time finding a gym that had a robust Oly program.
After visiting more than a few gyms, I stumbled upon ABB.
One of the things I appreciate is that the gym owner, Rob, vets each individual that he allows to become a member. I think it's one of the reasons the community is so great there. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced athlete, you'll find someone who can lift with you and I think that is special.
While the gym is not huge, you can find always find a platform to share or one of your own to lift on.
I appreciate the approach to coaching that Rob and Oleg implement in sessions. You can easily download an app which gives you your daily workouts including accessory work. That way, whether you are lifting in Austin or elsewhere, you'll know what to do.
Overall, I'd recommend giving this place a try. If you're looking to compete, you can do that or if you're looking to do oly recreationally, you can do that as well.

I’ve been a member of Austin Barbell (ABB) for about a year now and I can honestly say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my athletic career. Since joining the club my total has gone up 21kg. Rob and Oleg blend together Chinese and Russian styles of weightlifting that I have not found anywhere else. Not only is the style one of a kind, but it works (the 21kg in a year speaks for itself). One of the things I most appreciate about ABB is the communication between the athlete and the coaches. If you’re not feeling right, or your performance isn’t there that day the coaches will see/hear that and will adjust your workload accordingly. And, I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about the community at ABB. I have never been a part of an athletic community so full of genuinely good people. Every time I walk into ABB I feel like I belong there. It was a big factor in making my move to Austin an easier transition. I have made friendships here that will last my lifetime. I truly can’t say it enough but I’m so grateful I found this club and I’m grateful to Rob who gives the club 110%. If you’re struggling to pick a Weightlifting gym in Austin, go here.

I joined Austin Barbell in October 2021. While I played sports growing up, I had no CrossFit or weightlifting experience before the Foundations course I took with Rob. After those two sessions (one on snatch, the other on clean and jerk), I was hooked. I immediately signed up to be a part of the team and it’s the best decision I’ve made for both my mental and physical health in years. Austin Barbell has created community. A community of supportive and just all-around good humans. This community cheers on every single PR, for every single lifter, regardless of whether you’ve been lifting for years or a few weeks. It’s a community where anyone can learn and fail forward. That’s why training at Austin Barbell is the best part of my week. I come 5 times a week just because I love it so much. That’s also a big testament to the coaches. Rob and Oleg are excellent instructors and see potential in every athlete that joins the team. If you want to compete, they will guide you step by step. If you just want to learn, this is also the place for that. Regardless of your goals, Rob and Oleg are careful stewards of your Olympic weightlifting journey. Whether you’re starting or continuing that journey, do it at Austin Barbell. I guarantee you will love it.

I've been going to ABB for the past six months and have truly enjoyed the experience. Not only have I gotten stronger and learned to lift with proper technique, I've made a lot of great friends and consider the other members of the gym like a second family. Everyone is very supportive of one another and it makes for an awesome environment to lift in. It's normal for a group of us to go out and grab dinner and drinks after a Friday session or some brunch after a Sunday morning session. Rob, Renee and Oleg do a great job of making sure you're lifting correctly and provide you with the opportunity to reach your full potential as long as you are willing to put in the work. I even had a chance to compete in my first meet and hope to compete in more in the future. As long as you come in with a good attitude and a desire to lift, this a great gym to be a member of. Austin Barbell is a fantastic place for beginners and experienced athletes alike. As a rugby player, I had absolutely no background in lifting before coming here. Coach Rob and Coach Renee helped me form a fantastic foundation for mobility and strength, and I can see the benefits in my body and mind as well as my rugby performance in just the couple of months I have been here. Even through COVID, they provide safe and consistent training and communication, helping you to make adjustments for your body and needs. I have especially loved the environment, as the diverse backgrounds of the athletes and the large number of women weightlifters of all ages and sizes surprised and encouraged me. I found out about Austin Barbell through social media and a friend. I saw videos of the athletes and thought “wow, I want to have that technique too!” I was bit hesitant at first because I had been training under a different gym and coach and had to take 7 months off due to health issues and injuries. But I decided to give it a shot. After 7 months off, I started training at Austin Barbell in January 2021. I immediately knew this is where i want to be! The progress Coach Rob and the coaches have helped me make in such a short amount of time is amazing. I wasn’t sure if it would work out for me to train there, since i live an hour away... but it is SO worth it. Coach Rob strategically helped prepare me for a competition in March, where i got a gold medal, PR’d, qualified for youth nationals, and qualified for the north american open series. Even despite my health issues, the coaches have been very understanding and they’ve modified it for me when i needed it. I’ve never felt stronger and seeing my technique now vs january is incredible for such a short time period. The gym atmosphere and encouragement from the coaches and teammates is amazing as well. I can’t wait to progress further and see where this takes me!

I joined this gym mainly for the coaching of Coach Ma, who was amazing, but now coaches at RAWW Barbell.
However, after being part of the gym for a few months, I've realized that Coach Rob (the owner) has been regularly deleting negative reviews about the gym on Google Reviews and painted a false image of his gym.
Rob doesn't particularly care about you as a member or athlete. You'll find that your "personalized training" is the same as everyone else's that is sent on on a Google Sheet every week.
You'll be pushed to compete regardless of whether you're ready or interested, so that you'll buy his $200 lifting belt, $200 singlet, $200 lifting shoes, and other various knock off ZKC equipment. All of which can be found on alibaba or aliexpress (cheap to produce and sold back to you for 10x the cost).
On top of that, Rob is a terrible member of the Austin Weightlifting community as he consistently disparages other gyms in the area, criticizing their coaches and training styles.
Look elsewhere if you want to a part of a weightlifting gym. There is no reason to be a part of this terrible community.

Rob at Austin Barbell is incredibly helpful! I was looking for a large quantity of weights for a project and while Rob himself couldn't help, he listened to my needs and successfully put me in touch with Dom at Texas Garage Gym Builders. The project was delivered on time, a quick turnaround from first speaking to Rob on Thursday evening and Dom delivering the finished product first thing Monday morning.
I had a great experience with both Rob and Dom. They could'n't have been friendlier or better communicators. I would recommend working with them to anyone, and now I have some solid contacts for 'heavy metal' in Austin!

Coach Rob and Austin Barbell was recomended to me by my Coach who is already following their individualized programing for weightlifting too. In the short time that I have been working Coach Rob I have already felt such a huge improvement in movement, bar path and confidence in the sport. I'm based in Johannesburg South Africa, in spite of a big time difference my experience working with Austin Barbell has been extremely positive. Very efficient with attention to detail, I have a smart program designed specifically for my goals inmind. I would definitely recommend Rob and his Team to any athlete that wants to take their weightlifting to the next level!

After stopping by for a private session with Head Coach ma and Ronan, I was thoroughly impressed by the coaching staff's knowledge and their unique approach in teaching the Chinese Weightlifting style. The teaching methods used by Coach Ma are easy to pick up and with his experience in working with National and Olympic lifters it is very easy to improve here under his watchful eye. The brand new layout of the gym and top of the line equipment replicates a proper Olympic Weightlifting training hall in China, which was well worth the drive from Dallas.

I trained with Austin Barbell under Coach Rob for two months this summer. I had no previous experience with the sport but the team was very welcoming and encouraging. I received plenty of personal attention and instruction and was able to develop my technique to a point past where I expected I would be. I look forward to training with the team when I'm back in Austin!

I looking for a gym and a coach and fell in love when I first started at this location. Right after lifting in State I had some personal stuff happen and had to take a month to deal with it. I Communicated and let this coach know. Then Covid happen, I didn’t have a place to put equipment in my 4th floor apartment so didn’t feel like I should continue to pay for a membership without training.. also was scared for my income during this time. So he kicked me out without even having a conversation with me about it. (this is my perception because again he never cared enough to talk to me about me coming back to training he just deleted me off of the team.. and in a way embarrassed me in front of the other members)
I was new to Austin, and considered this gym family. But then I was treated like This and realized he isn’t truly invested in me as an athlete or my success in this sport.
I wish I would had at least been worth a conversation before getting treated the way I did. I thought Austin Barbell was really great and stood for a lot, but You always remember how someone treats you, and this is how I remember this coach and Austin Barbell.

Had the introductory two hour session with Coach Ronan and Oleg. Learnt a huge about in the two one hour sessions. I’m over 50 with ‘at the computer all day’ mobility challenges, but the coaches took that in their stride. Professional, passionate and really interested in the individual. Great facility with excellent equipment. Cannot wait until I’m back in Austin to train there again! Whatever skill level you’re at with Olympic Weightlifting you will get something out of training at Austin Barbell!

I came from Dallas and went to Austin Barbell for the first time for their snatch clinic on 09/21/2019. I was so impressed with everything! From the moment I walked in I was welcomed and made to feel at home! The coaches all took a genuine interest in each of the athletes and despite it only being a 2 hour class, they covered so much information and made sure we as athletes understood each piece. They provided plenty of opportunity for questions. I have a background in Strongman and a list of injuries that effect my hip mobility but the coaches worked with me to ensure I learned each piece of the movement correctly and safely. I would highly recommend Austin Barbell and their staff! I can't wait to make another trip down again whether for 1x1, clinic, or group class!

Since moving from California it has taken more research and literal going into Clubs, Boxes, and Facilities to find the level of coaching commitment and skill I was looking for.
The Coach’s Rob & Coach Rene are sterling reflections of dedication, excellence, and precise technique to the sport of Olympic Weightlifting.
Each Athletes program is individually planned each week by coach Rob to focus on each Athletes personal goals and development in sport excellence.
They are creating a culture of champion training practices in this camp that I wanted to be a part of!
After only 5 weeks of training under their direction
I competed in my first meet ever gaining my entrance into American Open 3 and qualifying for State Championships!!!
I have several personal goals that would challenge anyone -and my Coach’s just continue to point, que, and lead me in the direction of my dreams. I know it is never up to my Coach to make my dreams come true -that is on me —But in no way can ANY Athlete ever attain greatness without a Coach. In this case I am surrounded by Coach’s that believe the best in each Athlete and bring fresh enthusiasm for every training session.i am so BLESSED to be a part of this camp!!
Lastly, the Team Spirit within the club builds upon each other - everyone is rooting for the best in each other - when one successfully completes a lift there is space created for another to do the same! It is unparalleled—“the place to be” if Olympic Lifting is what your after.

Coach Rob is an amazing coach! He is very thorough and patient. If you are ready to be coached- Rob is the guy to see. I’ve been Oly lifting a long while and have tried many different methods, and was most interested by his Chinese methodology teachings as it is rare to find anyone who teaches the Chinese method. Needless to say, the Chinese method has been working great for me. Not only that, Coach Rob is a leader by example- he flies to China every year to study their method and learn from the Olympians in China. He is a very straight forward kind of guy and can appreciate all of his feedback. I highly recommend Coach Rob- as a coach myself, I truly believe he embodies all aspects a specialist should have and Cares most importantly about YOU and helping you achieve you goals. Go check out his classes!

I joined ABB after learning to lift in a cross training gym. I had learned to muscle the weight up, but not efficiently or with perfect form. The coaches at ABB are extremely attentive. The Chinese style focuses on rhythm, speed, form, and efficiency. Austin Barbell is hands down the best training in town for learning the basics, breaking through a plateau, or competing. The classes are small, the gym is well equipped (with A/C!) and the team is very supportive. Drop in and try it out!

Great club for those looking to train in a serious yet friendly environment. Some athletes compete, some look to stay in shape, and others do it for the fun of it. There's a broad spectrum of people here but it's all around humble, down to earth, and no BS. We love what we do, and that's Olympic Lifting! While the distance may be far (I drive from downtown Austin), I believe it is worth it. Traveled with this team to partake in my first weightlifting meet where we all saw much success. Can't say enough about this place, if you love to lift and are serious about improvement come check it out.

A great barbell club! I have been olympic weightlifting for about 4 years at the time of this review and have been training with ABC for around six months now but have known the head coach for around 2 years. What I have come to learn about the coaching and training program is that it is very well thought out and focused on your progress as an athlete, no matter where you are in your training. The coaching here is great and they have a real passion for olympic weightlifting. They have taken the time to learn the fundamentals as well as the advanced techniques involved with olympic weightlifting to teach you proper lifting technique, no shooting from the hip at ABC. Not to mention I have seen many gyms in Texas and the Austin area and have to say this has some of the best training equipment around, clean and well maintained. If you are in town on business and need a place to train or want to learn/get better at olympic weightlifting, this place is great! It has a great competitors program for the enthusiast.
