Barbell & Birdie is a premier fitness service dedicated to helping golfers get stronger, hit longer, and play forever. Barbell & Birdie is owned and operated by Dr. Matthew Wright, PT, DPT, OCS.
Dr. Wright is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute and delivers customized training programs for golfers that focus on enhancing their physical strength, improving swing mechanics, and increasing on course performance. Whether the goal is to to add more yards off the tee, reduce risk of injury, or maintain peak performance across the lifespan, Barbell & Birdie provides expert guidance and personalized workouts to help golfers of all levels achieve their goals.

I've been working with Matt for almost a year now, and I couldn't be happier with the results. The program is incredibly well-designed, focusing on specific movements and exercises that directly translate into improved performance on the course. Coach Matt was extremely helpful during my son's assessment. He was able to point out a few points from his swing that has helped him in his game afterwards.
He was attentive and very warm. He was able to provide feedback in an easy and comprehensive way. My son was more encouraged to work on his stamina, speed, and strength after his assesment with Matt.

My son who is a Bay Area high school golfer had the pleasure of receiving a golf fitness assessment from Matt. During the assessment Matt explained and demonstrated each step of the process. Matt gave great feedback and suggestions for improving golf specific as well as overall fitness. It was very apparent that Matt has a passion for what he does and an extensive level of knowledge. My son greatly enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to starting his new customized fitness program. I 100% recommend Matt and his training. From the initial meeting and assessment to the on going program, Matt is very knowledgeable as to what works and why for different ages and different abilities. Flexibility, strength, power, and speed are all part of the golf swing and I have seen measurable improvements in all areas over the last six months. The program is truly individualized.
If I was a parent of a young golfer, this program would benefit them and transform the way they hit the ball too. If I was a senior golfer, this keeps the enjoyment of hitting the ball far enough out there to still enjoy the game.
Most importantly, Matt is a great guy who is responsive, positive, and wanting the best physically from all his clients. He is definitely worth it!

My son is a student athlete and has been a client of Matt’s for almost a year now and it’s the best investment we have made for his sport. Matts innate knowledge of kinesiology and training for athletes has helped my son progress to being stronger and more accurate in his game. I as a parent appreciate the mental and physical coaching techniques applied by Matt, teaching my son accountability and mental discipline which is so important for life. I have been working with Matt for 6 months now. He has improved my total body strength greatly and this is improving my golf also. He provides health quality services that improve my total life with better mobility and strength. His coaching gives you direction with workouts and weight lifting that will improve your body strength and make your golf game better. He will make you enjoy life more. Matt at Barbell and Birdie has been working with my father (who is now 74) on returning to golfing after retiring.
Shortly before his retirement, my father began having back pain and eventually underwent a knee replacement surgery. These challenges made it difficult for him to regain confidence in his body and get out on the golf course again. No matter how much I encouraged him he still couldn’t bring himself to get out and hit his clubs.
That was until we found Matt. After only a few short weeks I could see my father was getting up out of his chair more easily. Squatting down to pick things up with more confidence and walking at a faster pace. A few weeks later I came home to him chipping golf balls in the backyard and ordering new golf products on Amazon to use when he couldn’t make it out to the range.
Finally after just 3 months my father, brother and I all went out and played a full walking round of golf just like we used to before. If you have a loved one who wants to get back to or improve on the sport they love I can’t recommend Matt with Barbell & Birdie enough!

Before working with Matt, I had tried to do my own "golf workouts" but kept not seeing any improvement in the gym, golf course, or physically. However, once I started working with Matt 6 1/2 months ago, he listened to my golf and fitness goals, put me through a TPI assessment to determine my current limitations, and then built a customized workout program for me. At 39 yrs old, I am hitting the ball harder and farther than I did in my 20's...... and I'm only getting stronger thanks to Matt. I have lost 20lbs, 8% body fat, and 2 inches off my waist.
My TPI assessment scores have improved by 75% and swing speed is up over 10mph in that time period. I am getting closer to my goals every day by working with Matt.
Matt truly cares about helping every athlete he works with achieve their maximum potential and golf goals. His program is flexible and he works with you to tweak/adjust it as needed, checking in with you on an almost daily basis. He provides unparalleled accountability and guidance. Matt is amazing in so many ways! He has motivated our daughter in ways we haven’t been able to and it has taken her golf game to the next level. In less than 6 months her swing speed increased 9mph! The results he has achieved with her are not just measurable in the gym but also on the course. He knows what he is doing when creating customized programs for his golfers. It is not one size fits all as he looks at each golfer and creates programs for their specific goals. Whenever she thinks she can’t hit a personal record with an exercise, he motivates and encourages her which results in her hitting a new record. He knows how to train his athletes so they can do the exercises correctly and without hurting themselves.
