A change of pace from my usual gym - training mate. The set up is a little much, but once you get into the swing of things, the workout is great. I went on Power day and it felt great to lift some weights! The trainers and other members were really friendly and approachable.

EDIT: BFT got into contact with me without seeing my review and identified the root issue and have seemingly resolved the issue! They handled it the best they could so I have updated my review to a 4!

Average gym. But we stopped going over 1.5 years ago and every few months they randomly charge us! We get an email confirming payment, money id deducted from my account and I have to call and have them reverse. This is the third time and each they say it won’t happen again. Straight taking money from my account

I’m usually not a class going person because I usually just enjoy doing my own thing, but BFT South Congress has my heart. If you can, go to one of Coach Layla’s classes. She is by far my favorite coach! She is very motivating, able to make modifications for you when needed, and explains the exercises so it’s always easy to understand.

I just want to say BFT South Congress in Austin is THE BEST! I've been a member for over a year now and it feels like home. The workouts are great, the people are better! I hate missing a workout, even if burpees are in the plan. I feel stronger and more mobile than before. I definitely recommend this gym to people who need a place with fun, support, and keep you accountable. I am not one that likes to workout alone, so the group classes are definitely my thing. I’ve came across BFT beginning of the year. Really enjoyed the space and workout but wasn’t very to commit at the time. When I joined BFT in January, I couldn’t even press the bar and now I’m benching 85lbs and deadlifting more than my body weight! The diverse community and coaches are all there to support your progress and I love the dynamic classes that build in progressions. Progress tracking is so easy on the apps and I really love that my cousin at BFT Leicester in the UK and I can stay connected by doing the same workouts even though we are in two different countries! 5 stars, would highly recommend 🤩

BFT is hands down one of the best fitness communities I’ve been a part of. The programming is intentionally designed to progress and challenge you while keeping things fresh and fun—every class feels like a step forward and keeps me motivated, even when exhausted.

The trainers are genuinely invested in your success. Shawn Shelby and Layla were incredibly motivating, personable and knowledgeable. I Absolutely love them. They took the time to correct my form, push me when I was slacking and celebrated my new PR 🥳

What really set BFT apart for me is the members. The energy in the studio is always positive and supportive even at 5am when I like to workout. My first class wasn’t intimidating at all. Everyone there was at different fitness levels and they all encouraged each other. It’s more than a gym; it’s a community that makes you actually want to show up.

I travel a lot for work, and when I’m not at my home BFT gym, South Congress is definitely my preferred BFT. I will definitely be back.

This is such an awesome studio! The workouts are great, they have both strength and cardio and you will work on every single muscle group. I visited BFT South Congress when I was traveling and they welcomed me as one of their own members. Shawn and the other coaches were extremely nice and made sure I felt supported during the workout and were there for any questions I had. Highly recommend. I’ve been going to BFT for several months. I’ve made tremendous progress in endurance, strength and body composition. They have a good mix of progressive strength and cardio classes. I was skeptical of doing group fitness, but my assumptions were wrong. Coach Shelby and Coach Shawn are fabulous. The member community is great. They motivate/encourage and cheer on progress.

TLDR: The best group fitness gym in Austin for progressive strength training with an enthusiastic training team and an energized, supportive member community.

In a fitness-first town like Austin it seems like you can’t go a few blocks without running into a group fitness gym - the training methodologies varying greatly but ultimately having a focus on cardio. I have always enjoyed group fitness but was looking for something focused on building strength while developing cardiovascular fitness and overall athleticism, and BFT South Congress offers exactly that.

There is a heavy emphasis on keeping track of your cardiovascular and strength progress at BFT South Congress. They utilize heart rate training/monitoring as an integral part of every session (emphasis on going up, down, or maintaining specific target rates depending on where you are in the workout) and the staff at BFT South Congress has loaned out monitors to members and newcomers who may not have their own so that they can take full advantage of class (such as myself the first time I visited). Progressive strength development is also an integral part of BFT - you can opt in to testing for your 5-rep max on a series of fundamental strength movements (such as deadlift, back squat, military press, etc) so that the weights you use during class are appropriate to your personal strength growth. During each multi-week training block certain of these movements will reappear throughout the block with variation on weight lifted and reps (generally fewer reps each week but heavier weight) to encourage further strength development. And of course the weight training equipment used in BFT is legitimate stuff - you don’t see or use equipment like trap bars or power racks in other group fitness franchises.

The real strength of BFT South Congress in particular is the burgeoning community of staff and members it has developed. Although consisting of people of vastly different fitness experience and levels (from complete newbies to longtime athletes) everyone you meet tends to be extremely enthusiastic about pushing themselves and each other to perform at their very best. Camaraderie is the norm and not the exception at BFT South Congress: at each class you will typically be grouped into pairs or triples, and work/rest during sets is typically designed to utilize this format to full advantage such as “You-Go-I-Go” where the resting partner will also spot for the active partner. It feels safer and more reassuring to push yourself to max weights and effort when you know you have someone always watching your back and encouraging you. And the coaches are no slouch either. There are always two or three of them at each class but you never see them up front just barking generic encouragements like at many other fitness studios - there are constantly roaming to spot you, provide individual instruction/feedback on form, or even flat out work a set with you to push you ahead.

If getting stronger and fitter is something you are looking for I would encourage you to give this place a try.

I’ve been with BFT since they opened in February and have nothing but positive things to say!

The coaching staff is not only friendly, but incredibly welcoming and personable. I’m greeted by name every time I walk into the studio and they do such a great job of understanding your fitness level/goals and helping accordingly. Also fair to mention that the members at this gym are super welcoming and supportive!

I enjoy the workouts and prefer BFTs class structures over F45, OT, Barry’s etc. bc I actually feel stronger over time (rather than just feeling completely gassed after every session, at least on strength training days). They offer strength training, cardio-focused and hybrid classes, typically every other day - great for all levels of fitness experience. If you’ve never been in a weight room before, this is a really great gym to learn about strength training, form and technique. If you’ve been lifting forever, they have plenty of equipment for you to lift heavy and great programming.

Pricing is in line with other boutique gyms in the area and while they do require 30 days notice to cancel, in my experience, this is pretty industry standard.

Definitely worth giving BFT a try! Love this gym!

BFT SoCo is absolutely incredible.

Classes:
Great mix of cardio and strength. Unlike other places where I would get injured taking 20+ classes a month, BFT is truly sustainable. I have never lifted before and this was a great introduction. It’s been really excited to see the progress.

Coaches:
Really great group of friendly coaches of different personalities. They get to know your name and are very welcoming. Backgrounds in physical therapy, personal coaching, etc.

Community:
Great mix of people who have lifted a lot/exercise junkies and people completely new to it all. People cheer each other on during major lifts.

Fantastic workout and trainers!! I would prefer this style of workout over F45, OTF, Barry’s, Heat Bootcamp, etc. you have strength days, cardio days and hybrid - the heartrate monitor tracking is better than any other group fitness studio I’ve experienced. You’re not trying to get the most points like the other places there’s an actual science behind how they track and train. You’ll be forced to work on your recovery and slowing your heartrate down then bringing it back up. Couldn’t recommend BFT South Congress enough!

BFT is the best! I used to think I hated workout classes because I felt like they weren’t focused enough on my personal goals, but BFT changed my mind. All of the trainers/managers are so nice and remember your name. They encourage you to give your all, but at the same time, their PXI system is amazing for avoiding overexercising. But, the thing that sets BFT apart is the community. I feel at home at BFT.
