Incredibly rude front desk people. Accidentally walked out of the gym without a shirt on and was yelled at extraordinarily rudely. absolutely unprofessional, unacceptable And Outright rude. I had really high hopes for this gym, but that encounter was genuinely bizarre and I’ve never encountered some sort of interaction like that before. If you prefer to not be yelled at for accidentally barely violating rules, then I highly recommend that you do not go to Austin bouldering project. You will be yelled at very rudely by the front desk staff. Sidenote, I did absolutely nothing to provoke or instigate such a reaction from the extra extraordinarily rude front desk person.

Be prepared for closures every few months, and do not expect a concession. Just got an email they’ll be closed for at LEAST a few weeks this month, and they refused any concession. This has happened multiple times over the last year.

I did a day pass with my wife and overall it was great. We mostly did bouldering. There are a variety of routes for many different skill levels.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because there was so much chalk flying around in the air. If you went to an area with the sun shining so you could see it well it literally looked like a mini blizzard. A couple times I had larger pieces hit my eye and it irritated them a little bit.

I brought my young kids to climb here and they absolutely loved it! My son is usually nervous to try new things but he gained a lot of confidence in himself as he was climbing. It was also great for problem solving! Unsurprisingly, my son wanted to celebrate his birthday here and the party packages are very reasonable. The party was low-stress and everyone enjoyed themselves. They even help you set up, take down, (Iike a coordinator), so I really appreciated them! Thank you so much, ABP! (Springdale)

The best bouldering gym I've personally visited. The route setting is super creative and the higher grades get you to do a lot without just falling back on making the holds harder. There are enough routes that it's hard to even try everything in the gym in a single session, and with access to two gyms in the Austin area, you essentially never run out.

The Bouldering Project also features youth training areas and tension boards, a yoga studio, and a full traditional gym space. There are multiple yoga and fitness classes on a regular schedule. The showers are well maintained and supplied, and there's even a sauna and an ice plunge.

The only downsides are that it is very expensive, and in the summertime it gets very hot. I find that I can only comfortably climb for a couple of hours in the early morning- any later in the day and I'm sweating buckets. But it's still a worthwhile investment in terms of both health and fitness and the social opportunities it provides. Definitely one of my favourite places to spend time.

I’ve been an ABP member since 2022.

tl;dr: The setting has gotten consistently better over time. The facilities and operations could stand improvement in the consistency of member experience.

My primary reason for driving past 2 other gyms to climb at ABP is the sauna & the size of the climbing area.

Unfortunately, they’ve not kept the sauna consistently hot lately— there’s nothing more of a let down than sitting in a barely warm, sweaty room after a workout.

The men’s showers seem to rotate weekly on which is closed for maintenance. It’s not uncommon for there to be no soap or for them to run out of towels.

Every few months there seems to be a facilities crisis: gas outage, broken dryers, fire alarms, sprinkler burst, etc

Some things are outside of their control but I imagine some might be avoided with a focus on upkeep.

Lastly, the customer facing staff have always been pleasant, accommodating, and warm 10/10.

Hopeful they’ll figure out the sauna & facilities piece soon.

Tried this gym while I was in town. I don’t particularly enjoy the setting style and the mats are way too squishy to feel stable. I went on a Sunday morning and it was not busy at all which was a plus. It just isn’t the gym for me personally.

Managing chronic pain, I find the mens sauna at Bouldering Project can offer some real relief, when it’s consistent.

Unfortunately, the temperature they set often fluctuates wildly. Optimal is 170°, but it rarely hits the mark.

If it’s too hot, you can always step out but too cold and there’s no way to make it more effective.

A reliable sauna would make a big difference
for me

Great gym! Lots of routes that are updated weekly and maintained, including a kids area which is quite large. You can rent climbing shoes or buy from the store! The store sells chalk and bags and shoes… they have got it all covered.

They have a large weight room for strength training and host yoga classes, as well.

The locker room/restrooms are clean and offer showers and cold plunge.

Once a month they host parents night out from 5-10. Kids get to climb, eat pizza, and watch movies.

I wish I could give this place 5 stars because I love climbing here and the staff/community are amazing. But my goodness some of the members have no common decency. I’ve been a member for a short time but have seen multiple people barefoot in the gym putting their feet on weights and not even wipe after themselves. This happens in the men locker room as well with dirty towels laying everywhere when there’s a designated basket. I’ve been wanting to use the cold plunge as well but have seen multiple people not follow the rules and go straight from the sauna into the plunge, it’s disgusting. Please enforce the rules more..

Bouldering Project - Springdale is an absolute gem for family-friendly fun! 🧗‍♀️❤️ My family and I had an incredible experience here, and it’s all thanks to the amazing team especially Coach Janet and Coach Theo. Their warmth, patience, and genuine love for teaching made our visit unforgettable.

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned climber, this place has something for everyone. The atmosphere is welcoming, the walls are challenging yet fun, and the coaches genuinely care about your experience. My family left feeling energized, accomplished, and excited to come back!

If you’re looking for a place to climb, connect, and create memories, Bouldering Project - Springdale is it. 🧗‍♂️✨ #FamilyFun #RockClimbingAdventures

My experience as a woman who sometimes climbs:

Staff: At the front desk they well assist with any questions or give you anything you ask for like chalk. They aren't friendly like at Westgate - no smiling or welcoming statements. The instructors for fitness classes are fine. They give good classes and will hang back to talk after class.

Climbing: it's so spacious and there are tons of options for climbs. I really enjoy climbing here because it never gets old. There are LOTS more climbers at this location and it can feel a bit crazy. Also, this location tends to always have children running around unsupervised who hang out below climbers or start a route that causes you to stop for safety. I think it's bc of the birthday parties or no staff oversight as to how parents control their kids in the main space.

Fitness: I've only been to the mobility classes and they are fine - off to the side in a separate room but it's a small space. The yoga classes gets PACKED without an inch to spare.

The gym: I like that it has space for alternative types of training like acrobatics, locomotion, mobility. Seems to be fine with the equipment options.

Locker rooms: clean, spacious, convenient. My main complaint is that the sauna is always ruined by people who don't read the sign outside because it's small and the wording is tiny. Hence, they they don't shower, undress, enter with a phone in use, and talk - all major no-nos for sauna etiquette. Every single time I come I end up leaving bc of this. **Please make a better sign to educate people on this!***

Parking: I know it's terrible but you get creative.

Upstairs space: nice for chilling out or practicing some movements on the open floor space.

Signed up for this gym for their yoga classes, but the parking is so horrendous that if you try going during a busy time, there's no where to park. They have reservations for classes, but those aren't actually enforced and classes are still first come, first serve.

Also, I signed up for this membership in January and they told me I couldn't get a physical card for another month because they were out of stock, which meant I needed to check into the front desk and talk to someone every time I visited the gym.

I joined this gym because of the cold plunges but I am not sure why they always put a closed sign and it says we are “ chemical balancing” it seems it’s intentional because I seen it twice where two days in a row they have the sign. While they can do the balancing all night also it’s not a swimming pool and it needs that much of a time.
Otherwise Staff is cool, place is kinda clean compared to others.

Suggestion: install mirrors in the gym area
Add more equipment such as the fixed weight short shaft.

Is a gym. It’s fine.
Half the walls are empty with little to no routes set.
There is no grading system. Colored routes ranging from V8-V10 isn’t a system. There’s a huge variation between an 8 & 10.
Please, be real setters and use real grades.
Chill vibe though. Friendly staff. Seems like a good community.
If you need to pull on plastic and get a fix, it’s fine here. If you want to actually train, I’d find another spot.

ABP enthusiast here but had my gym bag stolen from the locker room yesterday with my keys, wallet, and phone. They charged me a full day pass just to hangout and watch my kid climb. What a petty money grab.

Worst music ever. It's always lame, low energy music which makes it hard to get psyched to climb.

Nice staff and nice facility otherwise. Decent setting.

Always come visit this gym when I'm in town for work, and even though the setting is great as to be expected from most BP locations, the front desk staff aren't very welcoming and come off as unfriendly. This is in stark contrast to the Dallas BP who are always friendly and seem happy to help members.

I don't often write reviews but my experiences here stood out enough to warrant one and hopefully the visibility helps change what is otherwise a fantastic climbing gym.

This used to be a great gym, but they’ve sold to new management that seems to be actively running it into the ground. All of the good setters got poached by the better climbing gyms in the area, so setting is downright awful. The equipment is cheap and worn out. The cold plunge and sauna are broken and unavailable more often than not. It’s quite sad as this used to be a great gym before they sold out.

Excellent gym. If want want a whole lot of unusual amenities, along with the traditional weightlifting area, this is the place for you. The atmosphere is one of positivity and community. If the time allowed, I could see myself spending a whole day here. Weight room, extensive rock walls, yoga classes throughout the day. Meeting spaces on the second level. Really has everything you need to have fun, socialize, get a good pump on, yoga/ meditation classes, test your climbing skills no matter your personal difficulty level and finally get some hiit trying with the provided classes. Very unique gym, but it’s great. You should be a member if these things sound like what you want in a gym.

I am not a climber, so I can't attest to that aspect of the gym. But all of the non-climbing amenities...the classes, the upstairs lounge, exercise equipment, cold plunge, sauna, and snacks... are TOP NOTCH!!! I used to be a fan of this place but recently can not stand the sense of entitlement/ atmosphere it promotes with the clientele that workouts here. So many entitled recent college graduates workout here and think they are superior to those that are older and younger than them. Not even a partially finished climbing gym.

Where to begin. The only positive reviews are months if not years old. The ownership only replies to positive reviews and doesn’t address any criticism. The scaling is inaccurate at best. It’s overpriced. They’ve lost all their parking spots, not that they had many to begin with. They overcharge members to borrow any type of gear, and the gym has been under “redesign” for months.

If you want to overpay for a 1/4 finished gym check it out. Otherwise, go to Crux or Mesa Rim or somewhere better.

I'm new to bouldering, my friends who brought me for the first time are more advanced, and there's plenty for all of us to do. This has been my favorite bouldering gym in Austin. Other climbers seem more chill, helpful, and respectful here than the few gyms I've been to, which is nice as a newbie. I appreciate the additional amenities a membership brings, including yoga classes. My new routine is to arrive early before work, so I'm glad they open at 6AM.

I'd had a five star rating for years, and now that's got to change. The space is simply inadequate for the things they want to do and the volume of membership they're trying to support. Everything is 105% full, all the time. You'll wait for routes. You'll wait for the sauna. You'll wait for the gym equipment. You'll be chased out of the fitness room for a class almost nobody is taking. You'll drive around for 10 minutes through 3 parking lots to find a place to park. The nearby businesses, Springdale Station and Austin Paddle Club make getting there miserable. They're chasing a young, Instagram friendly crowd that isn't interested in a cooperative gym community that pays attention to those around them.

They're aggressively adding new members all the time, to the detriment of those of us who have been coming for 5 and 6 years. It was great gym that's broken itself.

This has been my gym for a few years now. It’s a solid spot for bouldering that offers many additional perks with a membership such as a full weight gym, HIIT classes, yoga, sauna, cold plunge, etc, that are all included. The people who workout in the weight room range from hippie Austin boulderer to body builders. It’s not an “instagram gym body” type of culture. Don’t come here expecting equinox.

They are also currently updating equipment and the weight room and repainting.

I want to start by saying that I love this gym. I've been a member for years, but am strongly considering moving on from it. My main use of the membership is the fitness area and fitness and yoga classes but slowly came to realize over the years, since those things aren't the main focus of the Bouldering Project, that they don't get quality attention.

The quality and consistency of instruction is so varied that it's always really hard to know what you're going to get - unless you're familiar with who's teaching. But the main concern/issue is the lack of communication and their inability to update the schedule. I know a number of members have submitted feedback about this many times and it's never addressed.

It's so common that people show up to fitness or yoga classes FOR the instructor that is on the schedule and don't go to others BECAUSE of the instructor that is on the schedule. There are so many reasons why someone may not go to a specific class or want to be led by a certain instructor, so knowing that there is always a chance that the schedule is inaccurate and you're not going to the class you think you are makes people not want to even go. It feels uncomfortable, chaotic, and unfair. And frankly, it just makes no sense that the schedule isn't updated to reflect changes - other gyms and studios do it - why can't APB?

First impression: there is a lot of slab in this gym. I've never seen a gym with this much slab. The gym is like 65% slab. There is not much overhang, but there's a nice cave. There are at least two top out boulders. Built very fancy, like the other Boulder Projects, but this one felt a little dirty. Love the soft mats, makes me feel more confident in the top outs. There are a lot of volumes.

My visit was a mixed experience. I went on a Thursday night, it was very crowded. Not one person talked to me, however, I tried to start a few conversations, but nothing carried. The people seemed friendly, but most people were already with friends, and no one was really talking about climbing or climbing hard. I came to train hard, so I was a little disappointed I didn't find people to climb with. The routesetting is good, but the holds were very large. There are a lot of jugs in this gym. When I was expecting a bad crimp, it was a full one pad 4 finger bucket. Several of the climbs felt soft. The feet are very good in this gym. There were several dynamic problems. There's a comp training area, and comp problems mixed throughout the gym, however, the quality of the comp problem holds did not seem very good. In terms of the hold quality, there's a mix of super nice fiberglass holds, some nice plastic, and some old plastic holds. There were not many brushes in the gym. The store had a very good selection of chalk, and I bought a bag.

My favorite part of the experience was the routesetting, and my least favorite thing was gym culture. Next time I'm in Austin, I would not go back to this gym if I was alone again. However, in a group this would be a fun gym. I genuinely hope that they will improve the stoke in this gym. Compared to west coast gyms, and even other gyms in Texas, this was a pretty disappointing experience.

First time visiting this gym aside from Crux and I love the friendly hangout setups for when you want to just be around the gym even if you’re pumped and done working out. I’m still here and already wish I could stay in Austin longer to play. Thanks for the tampons too as I had just landed and drove directly here to climb and had them clutch. Would come back. 19$ for day pass. Nice friendly staff. I’ll leave with some cool free stickers too :)

Bare bones and perfect. Exactly what you want out of a bouldering gym with plenty of climbing walls, chill staff, and a large gym with all the essentials and none of the fluff. The "upstairs" desks/lounge area pairs with their strong Wifi to make this an excellent spot to work in between working out (or vice versa).

I've been coming to this gym for the past year and I love it-- the routes that make it easy for beginner climbers, the friendly community, the community events, yoga and fitness classes, shower and sauna, etc. However, in the past couple of months, it seems to have gotten quite a bit more crowded, the holds a little more grimy, and the air quite a bit more sweaty and stuffy in stench. Understandably, many gyms tend to get more crowded at the beginning of each new calendar year due to discounts/deals and new year resolutions. However, it's starting to be quite a lot.

I've been a member of several gyms and this one by far has been the best experience. Not because of the climbing walls or the equipment, but because of the instructors. They take the job seriously, and are dedicated to improving the health and fitness of its members. Their classes are always full so I know they are the reason a lot of people keep coming back. However, I've learned recently that they haven't been paid in several weeks because of a transition in the accounting system. I hope that this issue gets resolved soon, and that they are paid on-time and showed more respect in the future.

REALLY love this gym and have been a member for years. Recently BP has been undergoing some business changes.. not sure if this is directly correlated but here's some things that have been brought to my attention recently... trainers have not been paid for over 10 days now ( this should be managed by leadership and resolved immediately. There's pockets deeper than these trainers have higher up. They should float them until these business processes have been hammered out, no excuse.).... no communication to feet on the ground from upper management and lack of overall care for the classroom / trainers. Why are trainers spending class time cleaning class rooms if we have people hired to specifically, clean? A lot of bumpy changes around here are hard for the members, I can't even imagine how to staff feels. Please do better by them.

Longtime member and used to absolutely love this climbing gym but I found out that they haven't paid their trainers in a few weeks... super messed up. The trainers are the reason why I have continued to go here as long as I have and they are what make the community great. Not to mention that they do plenty of work outside of their job description (like keep the studio clean & organize class sign ups). I really hope that this can get resolved because I will not continue to spend money at a place that treats its staff like this.

I have been going to ABP for about a year and I couldn't recommend it enough. This is definitely a more broken in gym than the Westgate location, or Crux, but the facility is still beautiful. The route rotations are frequent enough that you'll always have new climbs, but still have about a month in case you need some time for a project.

The route setting has plenty of variety, and they aren't afraid to get creative. There's more standard climbs, lots of dynamic stuff, as well as tech-y and balanced based problems. They definitely have fun with it, and sometimes there will be routes that crack me up.

I don't personally use the fitness area, but it is there! The yoga classes are very nice, at least as a beginner, and I've heard good things about the fitness classes too.

Service is great, everyone is friendly, and there's a good variety of different music (one of the employees has similar taste to me, and for that I am grateful).

I wanted to come to this gym for awhile. We have friends who just moved to Austin and while visiting them we stopped in. I love the grading system so much! It takes the pressure off of what grade you are climbing and gets me to try things that normally I wouldn't because they are "too hard/ above my grade". The facilities are insanely nice, by far the nicest I have ever been to, and the staff was really cool. The only downside to the gym was how packed it was. You couldn't navigate the mats safely without being under someone climbing or stepping on someone sitting on the mats. There were so many people waiting for routes that you would sit for awhile just waiting for the opportunity to go. I'm sure this isn't all the time but there was a group of small children playing on top of the top out boulders making a super dangerous situation for themselves and climbers. I would love to come back again and try it on a less busy day so that I can explore more.

Pros:
-Polite employees and helpful.
-No 30min “introduction” training.
-Gym section.
-Large bouldering setup.
-Price for day pass.
-Clean Holds

Cons:
-Purchase shoe selection.
-Renter shoe options.
- *V Color Project Circuits system is terrible. One color represents multiple grades v4-v6*.
-Climbing colors were all easy. Was able to flash white (v8-v10) with renter shoes. (V9 climber).

The projects were difficult only because of having rented shoes. Just tough holds in a straight line. Overall the route setting seemed pretty lazy.

As mentioned in the cons list, my major issue was the project circuit grading system. ABP utilizes a range system but the ranges are far too large. There is a vast difference between a v4 and a v6 but their grading system doesn't differentiate between them. It took me almost a year to reach from v4 to v6. It also seemed overall inconsistent with many climbs that are graded harder actually being easier than the lower rated ones.

It really takes very little effort to assign a single grade to a climb so I am not sure why they use this system in the first place.

Great climbing and an awesome Olympic lifting gym. The climbing routes are updated regularly and are color coded so you don't get in the mindset of being stuck on a single number (v1/2/etc). There is a range of difficulties inside of each color coding and it helps you more easily try and progress across them.

The staff is friendly and the classes are easy to sign up and attend.

There is also a working area/lounge area on the second floor if you wanted to find a spot, work, and climb on breaks or just grab a bite and rest between longer climbing sessions.

This is still one of my favorite bouldering gyms in Austin.

This might be the strangest way to start a review, and I mean no disrespect, but I love this place not for its staff but for its facility. The first time I came here I took a self guided tour and discovered their mobility focused gym. I fell in love. It’s got gigantic 40 foot ceilings (I don’t know if that’s accurate in measurement, don’t hold me to it) which makes it feel so open. They have all the excise tools your could need for a great workout. And then there’s the main attraction, the climbing wall itself. Also massive, spanning the remaining 3 walls of the warehouse-esk facility and a couple boulders in the center. I can’t say I’m a big climber myself (I’m sorry for y’all reading this who feel a type of way) but the walls are really nice and constantly updated multiple times weekly with new routes. Shoutout Nate 🤙

Basically, if you want a chill atmosphere of healthy conscious people, I say go.
Do a day pass.
Try the sauna.
You won’t regret it.
It’s great.

This place has really gone downhill over the years.
- It smells like feet constantly. They could set out air fresheners or something in the main areas where people changes shoes and in the locker rooms but they don't. It's gross.
- They've been investing in the Westgate location so upkeep for the Springdale one has gone south. The rotating wall has been broken for months, maybe years. Everything is just kinda dirty and hasn't been painted in a while.
- They are offering subsidized memberships for people making less but they're now increasing regular membership another $10 to $85. I see you and it sucks.
- The gym is already packed enough during normal hours and they continue having events so if you go there regularly, you'll be inconvenienced more often than not.
- I'll be shopping around for other gyms for now. I wish I lived closer to Westgate but I'm not driving 30 minutes in this town one way to workout.

I really like them but boy does it suck being a patron.

The routes are amazing, the staff is amazing, and the atmosphere is amazing. The latter of those three have been something that's been difficult for me to find at other places. The people here are always helpful and encouraging. This place leaves the elitist attitude that you see as some locations behind and it has an assortment of climbs. Whether you are a seasoned climber or just starting, you'll find something you can climb and challenge yourself with (even if you're not fully fit).

Many of the routes are set up to teach you specific techniques and help you progress to the next level of your climbing. There are textured walls, a large amount of routes, and walls are regularly changes out to keep things new and fresh. They have a fitness and Yoga room, and have classes you can attend within these rooms. There's also a sauna in the girls and boys bathroom.

One of the more difficult things about this place is finding parking, as there's a bar near it. However, I recently found out there's back parking for this building, you just have to know where it is. If you drive behind Drink Daily Greens you'll notice a large amount of parking available within the same distance of the main parking. I only found this out after talking to the staff but it was a nice tidbit to know.

Edit: post-pandemic and people are a lot quieter/social here, which I think is to be expected. Last time I went they had some alcohol chalk you can buy to try to keep your hands clean off bacteria while climbing.

This place, ABP-Westgate, sucks. We went for a children's birthday party. The front desk person was rude and did not know what he was doing. In a normal situation, we gave birthday party's name, which would automatically go to the information linked to us. Here I had to give personal information repeatedly, the person either did not pay attention to what was told or had a short memory problem like Dory, or just family unfriendly. Worse, I was told that If I went there again, I could be denied of entrance. Really? Keep the business closed! First time and the last time. Awful experience and stay away from this place.

Fantastic bouldering gym that is great for beginners and intermediates. Parking can seem like an issue, but there is a parking lot behind the building that most people don’t know about that always has parking. (You might need google maps to find it.) The people who work here are extremely friendly and helpful. The people that go here regularly are genuinely excited about bouldering and tend to light up when you talk about it.

The gym also has a workspace upstairs for students to study or for people who work from home to work. There is an attached fully furnished gym that wasn’t put in as an after thought. They also offer fitness classes for all attendees, you just have to sign up on a white board on the door just to make sure there’s not too many people in at once.

Locker rooms (at least the woman’s) is always kept clean, they supply soap/shampoo/conditioner, and the sauna is great after a long day of work.
